I have a theory why... I postulate it's because Jay doesn't showcase just how good of a painter he is with actual "painting" videos. If you've watched his nightly live stream videos then you'll know he can paint as well as anyone on RUclips (hell, he got a finalist Golden Demon award for something he painted just while live streaming and with no intention of entering into a competition!) Personally, I'd love to see a compilation video of the streaming videos each time he's done with a "series". Otherwise, it's rare to see how bad-ass all of his models are, especially if you just go by video title.

Finally a good comprehensive review with a nice plus on the rehydratation factor, I think it could be pretty easy and fast to do full model shading the same way we do with oil paints only using one of the darkest tones of this paints diluted with the plus of using water instead of white spirit to do the clean up; some people will say you are forced to varnish and seal the model but the same is neccesary with contrast paints, this ones peel off if arent properly sealed

I really liked the GW black templar contrast for my marines, it let me cover up mistakes on their armor with just a couple of coats and it didn't look thick like with just straight abbadon black being used. So i was really interested in trying the army painter ones eventually. Specifically the reds. I like to use red for my energy colors on my necrons, and lights and stuff on my marines. So having a red paint that can seep into crevices nicely sounds like it will be very useful for me.

As for the reactivating part I also like it; its actually kinda cool to be able to pull off part of your glaze. Its like a low key version of what people can do with oil. I found you get much better results when you do this within the first 20 minutes, it was hard to do this the next day.

Yes, I varnished my models and had no issues with reactivation. In fact it seems on a chemical level the reactivation only occurs when dealing with water. I had no issues at all with reactivation using just the speed paint and then edge highlighting afterwords. I even tried using a wash and didn't notice it pulling away in the slightest. I used a matte varnish before trying to get a test model wet to see if it reactivated, and it seemed to stopped any reactivation from occurring from my tests.
I find that contrast just seems worse overall, it feels too hard to avoid splotchiness because of the drying time. You would be better off with speed paint of even an ink.

I love my speed paints. They do what they are intend to do but they work so well in ways I wasn't expecting (I have never used contrast paints).
People told me speed paints and contrast paints won't work for Warhammer 40k models as they tend to pool on smooth flat/larger surfaces but I haven't had any issues painting my Blood Angels because Speedpaint works from an airbrush (2mm). I then roughly spot/line wash with the same paint but it is colour matched and doesn't change the colour/tone of what I have already painted.
Other reasons I like them are:
I have massive range of metallics because I can paint over Chainmail silver (Runefang) etc with the colour I want.
They blend really well. I recently painted a jumpack exhaust stands for my inceptors and used 3 of them (zealot yellow, Blood red and gravelord grey (over Vallejo grey primer) and paint a band of colour (starting with lightest and the with a wet brush pull the paint up to graduate it.

Painting the caps is a brilliant idea...going to steal when my speed paints arrive.
One other advantage of the reactivation is that you can "clean" off over paint. In some of the review videos, they tried to correct over paint by covering it up with more of the base white colour, which didn't work because it just mixed with the other paint. This is the normal approach with acrylics as errors can be covered once dry. With the reactivating colour, you could simply rewet it and clean it off. Or if your are painting the area with a darker colour it likely won't matter that some of the other colour gets mixed in.

    • @demon1103
      @demon1103 2 года назад +1

I really hope I can correct errors easily this way as touch-ups are my biggest concern with the reactivation issue. Things like painting eyes, gaps in armor,etc.. I know I'll get APsp where it doesn't belong and will need to touch up, so hopefully I'll be able to simply remove it where needed....I really don't want to varnish a model 3X.

Very neat to see you trying almost an oil wash-like technique based on the re-hydrating, and I was hoping people would come up with some cool ideas. I've not gotten to check them out yet, but it seemed to me that a lot of the "Oh no! Rehydrating!" was a bit overblown.

So, Army Painter Speed Paint isn’t an energy drink that helps you to paint faster? Dang, back to Baja Blast for this guy!

These may be worth investing in for sure. I currently paint Space wolves and i use Space wolves contrast as a basecoat over grey seer then glaze Russ grey Over it avoiding the shaded areas.

Just started using them and I'm really impressed. It's a great result in next to no time at all. I'm experimenting with some glazing over the top to smooth things out and it works really nicely. No issues with rehydrating them, but it's definitely good to know it can be used to help age/weather the model.

From what I've watched and read I feel like your review and Brent's are the most objective ones. You pointed the good and the bad.
    Thanks for your quality content.

I got the small pack this week, I've used them all on different models. As a new painter it's improved what I'm doing and I'd highly recommend the set to fellow new painters

I bought the smaller box but I have yet to do much with it. Is that Plasma Bolt good for glow effects like on plasma guns?

Awesome video! Live the caps idea, I had thought of doing this but now seeing yours done I’ll definitely paint my caps. I’m a new painter and am recording my experience on this channel - Speedpaint is excellent for beginner painters with no art experience like me 😄

Dude, you sold me on these paints. Other videos had me on the fence, especially with my partner just starting to get into painting...was looking for the easiest product for her to start as she's gotta build up the patience for fiddly bits. And honestly, your tests just got me excited to try them on my own pile of shame 😅

I have really liked using the Speed Paints, but I found the reactivation problematic when brushing on varnish. I painted some Blood Angels red, and noticed my brush picked up the red and deposited it in other places when trying to coat them. I'm going to try using spray varnish instead, but humidity in South Florida makes that dicey...

Been loving Speedpaints. One technique I've been trying is blending black to white on parts of the model and then hit it with speed paint to create interesting gradient effects.
