Speedpaints over metalics is one of my favorites looks. Brought a lot of life to my Octarius terrain.

Speedpaints mixed with metallics is also pretty neat for a more subtle coloring.

Oh absolutely. I've tried a metallic 'zenithal' a while ago, where i basecoated the whole model in a dark metallic from Vallejo and then went over it with bright silver like you would with a zenithal prime. Worked incredibly well.

The "dipping in woodstain" was a trick we used back in like 2006, and being from a time and place where washes didn't even really exist it blew my mind. Looking at those models now, I cry over the amount of wonderful models I've ruined XD

I read a story today about a guy in Spain that went into Games Workshop stores and only ever bought paint, one day the manager confronted him and asked why he never bought miniatures. The man responded by saying "I make gaming tables so I only need paint" and the manager scoffed at him and said something like "Oh who's going to buy that..." the guy apparently sells them for 3000 Euros. He ended up never buying paint from them again.

I have had a number of interactions with GW staff in the passed, but the one that sticks out to me was just before the pandemic hit us, I was buying supplies (Paint and brushes) at my local store, one of the staff who wasn't at the till cane over and said, he had seen me a few times in there buying paint but not any models, and why was that?. I told him I make gaming tables, and I find it I use the same paint it helps sell the idea of it all being in the same universe and also I get asked to colour match certain things to someone's Army. So he asked did I play? I said no it's not my kinda thing, I love the law the universe building that's about it. He asked how much do I charge for a table I told him, around £2k to £3k depending on what's wanted. He laught and said yeah right, so I showed him my website and rhe table I was working on at the time, his response was, you make all that money off of GW and you don't even buy the anything, as he walked away, he muttered, "what a joke fucking cheapskate.". I then turned to the member of staff at the till and said, I have changed my mind keep the paints, and brought them online.

Yeah Army Painter paints have always been odd in that they really are fine, but the Medium and the Pigment REALLY like to separate. So you have the shake the holy hell out of them to get them to work properly. If the paints are all getting agitators then that solves the main problem with them compared to Vallejo or Scale-75.

The "wood stain" method has been around since the early 1980's. The trick was to NOT mix them before use. Also, mixing paint/ink with Future (now Pledge) floor finish was used and called a "magic wash" since the mid-late 1980's.
    RE: washes -
I have used washes since the 1970's - they were enamel and/or oil washes back then. Oil washes are still popular; enamel only in modeler/train realms.

25:30 S'tan. Kinda flipped back and forth on it for a while, but what solidified it was a podcast talking about ancient Semitic religions and they brought up Satan (really, the enemy, which was more of a category than single being), but they were using an archaic pronunciation which was with the emphasis on the second syllable (S-tahn instead of SAYtan or SAYt'n).
That and there was this old Necron conspiracy theory from 3rd ed that Leviathan and Behemoth were being driven forth by C'Tan (both classic Satans, as well as The Deceiver and The Dragon). Back when GW had their own official forums that were a shitshow. Good times.

I like The Army Painter. They get a lot of hate online for not being good, but I don't have any problem using their stuff. I also use Citadel, Vallejo and Reaper paints and I don't feel like AP stuff is a step down. Like every paint range, not every paint is a winner, but they have good paint overall. I think that most of the people complaining about the paint don't follow directions and they don't squeeze out the extra medium stuff at the top of the bottle before trying to use it and then they bitch about the paint not mixing.

    • @extremities8

I agree with this take. I have SOME of their paints, but none of them were as bad as everyone told me they would be. Their only real crime here is not letting customers know about letting some of the medium out before using them. If they put that on the display shelf, everyone would know and this problem would go away. They're putting mixing balls in their paints from now on so problem is already more than solved.

I was not expecting to get enamored with the escapades of the Mournvial and I was surprised by how fast I read through False Gods. But I do agree that the Necron lore revamp for the War in Heaven was sorely needed. It just made them have more grounded reasoning for belonging into this universe. And Trazyn the Infinite is literally up there with Ghazghkull. The only thing I don't like about Necrons post lore revamp is the in game units talking back on the Unification mod for Dawn of War: Soul Storm. The reactivation of Speed Paint also happens long term. There are multiple videos where painters pick up weeks old painted models, try to touch them up, and end up reactivating the paint. It doesn't happen always, tests show it only happens some times, maybe only some of the range is more susceptible to it, but it's bad enough that Army Painter changed their official application procedures to include "varnish" in the end. Since I find dropper bottles superior, I'm waiting on the new upcomming Vallejo "contrast-like" range, they are definitelly my favorite regular paints.

Funny, AK is the one I can't get around here. Scale75 I can get at my FLGS (though I've kind of gotten tired of them, somewhat inconsistent results). Vallejo is just impossible to get restocks of anywhere so I've given up on them entirely.

Just as I was about to type it you use your psyker powers and say it. "Jean Claude" does look like Snake-Eyes from G.I. Joe. If I ever do a G.I. Joe Guard army (after I do the Cobra one of course) this guy is definitely in it.

I found a weird issue with AP's speedpaints and their wash medium where they just dissolve certain kinds of paint. If I zenithal a miniature with Liquitex white ink and try to apply speedpaints it sometimes just rubs the ink clean off. And recently I painted some mushroom enemies form the Dark Souls board game, using mostly Deck tan and Ivory for the brightest values, but wanted to bring it down with a wash of seraphim sepia thinned with some of the AP wash medium and that too dissolved some of my thinner layers of paint.
I've theorized for a while that something about their medium formula hates white pigments.

Speedpaints reactivate, you have to varnish the model after applying them. Inks rehydrate so you have to varnish them before painting over them with speedpaints, contrast, etc.

Not sure how that happens, I've used their washes mixed with airbrush thinner and flow aid, which definitely can reactivate regular paints, but yet the paint clung on fine.

The reactivation issue is way worse than you're describing. There's a red and blue SpeedPaint that literally reactivates 24 hours later, though to be fair those two are the worst ones.

I have painted about 75 miniatures using speed paints, no varnish and they all turned out fine, yes the paint reactivates a bit but not at all enough to make them difficult to use

    • @taigaaisaka6305
      @taigaaisaka6305 2 года назад

@@EonsOfBattle The issue, the thing here, is: it shouldn't reactivate. At all. The whole point of Speedpaints is to do that, speed paint, no "Apply a fast coat then battle with the reactivation, in some cases, up to 24 hours later, when adding more layers", it is specially embarrassing when their competitor, Citadel, has non of that issue and the new upcoming one from Vallejo, Express, from early reviews, also don't have reactivation issues. Furthermore, the issue is so well known that Army painter tells its customers to varnish after applying a SP coat. That's why AP Speedpaint is considered a faulty product, the way you need to paint and handle it goes completely against the whole reason it exist in the first place: Speed Paint.

I disagree with your assessment of Army Painter speed paints drying if you just leave it long enough to cure. Juan Hidalgo Miniatures has a video demonstrating even after 24 hours they can and will re-activate, I think you should check it out!
