    It’s a small thing, but I wish they would bring themes to the Switch like they had on the 3DS. A customization option would be nice. I wish they would port over those Zelda games as well, and an official Nintendo joycon with a dpad would be amazing! I love my Switch, but it definitely needs improvements, whether that’ll be in an update or the next console. Great video, as always!

    The odd decisions Nintendo made with the switch always baffled me. You have the original switch, nice, awesome, portable AND home console. You have the switch lite, small, better battery console quality games on the go. You'd think they would then lean into a revision that gives docked play a bit of breathing room, a performance boost maybe? No, the catered to handheld play with an OLED screen, kickstand, larger screen (though not increasing the resolution so pixel density goes down) and just for kicks they stuck in an RJ45 port on the dock despite the handheld centric improvements they've made to the model

    how the switch is missing character like the 3DS had
    but their their approach was all about the games this time which does show
    however, missing basic features like more than 2 themes, an on-system messaging program (xbox 360 had this perfected as far back as 2007 so there is no excuse) is just kinda ridiculous...
    it took 6 years to get bluetooth support when the hardware to support it was already in the system the entire time?? like wtf

    TLOZ Wind Waker HD and TLOZ Twilight Princess HD take advantage of the second screen of the Wii U, so Switch versions of these games would be inferior to the Wii U versions no matter what, and Nintendo does not want the Switch to look worse than the Wii U. Which is why they crippled the Wii U version of TLOZ Breath of the Wild to not use the second screen.

    A lot of my problems with the Switch are its intentional and baffling discrepance with the past.
    Why isn't the virtual console from Wii U a thing anymore? It was actually awesome and it would need very little effort to implement. There is streaming, but in an optimistic way is not the same thing and at worst is a longevity measure to milk the past in a sub-optimal way.
    Why is Nintendo sitting on future AND past finished products? Because they can't decide when to actually release them in a meaningful way...like, how is this even normal?
    Customization? Gone, while a lot of past Nintendo consoles had it.
    After less than a year I've bought the Switch, I don't use it anymore and even those Nintendo games I would like to play, I do on the Steam Deck. I literally played the Switch for 2 months...which is very dissappointing and has surely taught me something about being more cautious with my console purchases.

    I agree with everything you said. I’m personally not bothered by the design of joycons, yes I prefer a proper d pad but the novelty of having two controllers although pretty unpractical, it’s part of the Nintendo charm.
    What bugs me the most of the lack of virtual console. Why isn’t game boy, gba and GameCube games on the switch? Charge us 20 bucks a game, they’d make so much money and make the fans happy too.
    I recently received a steam deck…this thing plays everything from Atari to ps4 games. I wish Nintendo was doing this before valve. If they don’t step up, switch’s dominant days could be numbered.

    The switch is too big. You can’t put it in your pocket like a 3DS. The joycons don’t secure as good as they should, they can come off fairly easily. The screen is not protected unless case when transporting it. And the OLED release with zero upgrades aside from a screen is why I got a Steam deck… when I would have bought an upgraded switch that I was hoping for. The OLED release literally made me angry with Nintendo… wasted potential. Its also why I discovered the 3DS that I dearly missed out on… and now collected all the games I like. The 3DS is truly pocketable, and therefore the MOST portable. I play it far more than anything else.

But still for the 3DS to come out 12 years ago and have all the things mentioned above minus Bluetooth, and the switch to still, 6 years later, not have it is so wild to me. Especially for the price point and era. $200 3DSs were king of the court, $200 switch is doesn’t even switch and I know it’s a lite, but for $300-$350 the experience actually isn’t too different. And it’s not like we’re talking hardware issue. This is all software related that modders have fixed themselves

    Good vid, but I disagree with the disadvantage of fusing the console and handheld decreasing supplementary games. During the Wii U/3DS era when one system got a better title the other got a drought, and it was normally the Wii U that suffered for it. Also you got some proper guff like New Super Mario Bros 2 getting released around the same time as New Super Mario Bros U creating over saturation and ending up with Nintendo ultimately competing with themselves in the end.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing your perspective. You’re right about the Wii U going through droughts. What I was going for in that section is that we used to get different perspectives on games in the same franchise. Like Super Mario Land on the Game Boy compared to Super Mario World. Mario World is clearly more advanced, though Mario Land is still fun. We don’t get that kind of thing anymore.

    • @JRH-1007
      @JRH-1007 2 года назад

      @@NeanderMeander I would disagree with your point that the Switch doesn’t give different perspectives on franchises. Most of Nintendo’s core franchises have had or will have both modern games with new gameplay mechanics and throwback games that harken back to their 2D origins. While I would agree that there’s an issue with much of this variety coming in the form of ports and remakes, we should still acknowledge that different perspectives on franchises are present and accounted for.
      As for having console and handheld libraries separated again, I see no real argument for why Nintendo ever should. Yes, and there’s nostalgia for them doing so for essentially three decades and the technological differences between platforms may have often forced developers to be creative in ways they otherwise wouldn’t have been. However, going back to that model is like going back to using pay phones. Some may see some minor benefits, by why use one over a smart phone that can do everything pay phone can do and so much more? If handhelds are now capable of playing modern console quality games, there’s no good reason why they shouldn’t.

    Agreed. By consolidating both markets into one console, Nintendo has effectively nerfed both. The console is underpowered and the handheld just plays the same games but at a lower quality. Sure it's nice to have this feature but Nintendo needs a higher power dock that allows you to upscale the resolution and double the framerate on these games. Lets face it, without the portable gimmick Nintendo would be losing their asses again like Wii U if they tried to push such underpowered hardware into the marketplace.

    I don't think the switch is lack of games. What it lacks is NINTENDO classic IP original games, but here is the point you also mention in the video: Now Nintendo can focus to make their classic IP games better for only one system.
    I think Switch have much bigger problem than just missing port or "lack of games" point. My first problem: Switch hardware is kinda sucks when it comes to play AAA video games, even though that AAA games come from Nintendo themselves. BOTW, Xenoblade games and quite a few more games don't really have stable fps on switch. Of course this is also a matter of optimization from the developer (looking at Atlus and the terrible SMT 3 switch port), but with more powerful hardware, is mean we will have better looking game in the graphic side, and the art style of game can even shine so much more that stuck at 720p internal resolution with low res texture.
    My second problem: Switch software is also kinda sucks. Eshop is barely run stable without constantly loading to show games, their wishlist doesn't any kind of sort system and kinda annoying where we have to wait a little bit to let the wishlist show us the next few game we want buy. This is where I found this issue is kinda funny: Nintendo has a small little cute animation Cat Mario running when we wait a game page loading, but this animation is barely work on Eshop.
    Haizz, I love the switch, but it has become the "indie game/AA games" machine for me, not a console I want to play AAA games on. Nintendo games on Nintendo hardware? Sure, but I really don't expect a stable FPS of those games on switch. Third party AAA games? Only buy from Atlus, mainly because I love their games and their game even though has AA Budget, but their quality is easily AAA. Most of my money on switch is spend for indie games, can easily has stable fps without having any loss about graphical side.

    I feel like I haven’t missed the d-pad but that being said if there’s an analog option for both, I automatically play that way. Scott, Denis and I are actually playing a game right now that you can play either way and I’m playing analog and they are playing d-pad. I guess it’s the modern gamer in me 🤦🏼‍♀️
    The hori split pad is a game changer and I love the way it feels although yes, missing the rumble a bit.

      I find myself using the analog stick on certain older games, but I prefer a dpad on most platform games. I've heard that the Hori split pad is really comfortable. I should probably give it a try.

    I agree with you. I've started to feel more and more that we're missing out on games on the switch. They're clearly putting out less games now. :( It'd be really fun if they would have a low end hand held again too, so it would be easier for them to pump out a bit more games. At least we got Link's Awakening (I finally bought a Switch because of the astonishing graphics in that game), Kirby's dream buffet and Cadence of Hyrule, so luckily they've put out a few "smaller games" at least. I suppose it's smart for them to not over-expose their franchises, but they're holding back a little bit too much. Except with Kirby! Getting sick of him haha, give us a new Wario Land instead! ^^

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад +1

      I agree. I miss the two types of games Nintendo used to make. Games for their handhelds and games for their home consoles. They used to compliment each other so well. Now we get one console with half the games releases. I feel like Nintendo has relied heavily on Wii U ports to help fill in this game releases. Which was a good thing for those that didn’t have a Wii U. For people like me, I had been playing those games for years. It felt like a slap in the face for supporting them when their console was struggling. At least I could play those great games on the go. That was really nice. Hopefully they split their handheld and home console up this next generation.

  • @Level1Sword

    We were supposed to be getting many more games from Nintendo since both the console and handheld divisions were merged into one, yet here we are. I wonder, too, what's going on with Nintendo in general.

      Game development is getting more expensive every year. you can't compare 3ds games to wii u games and expect the switch to get the same amount of games as two consoles combined.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  2 года назад +1

      @@melkormelkorius7158 That's a reasonable argument, but I would ask why we can't compare the generations to each other? Nintendo was able to make plenty of portable and home console games in every gaming generation before the Switch, even when the cost of development went up every year. What makes this new generation any different? Is the cost the only reason? Nintendo is like an oil company. They have plenty of money to make games.

    • @melkormelkorius7158
      @melkormelkorius7158 2 года назад

      @@NeanderMeander Then I ask why it is the same with other game developers? Why are there so few Sony games on the PS5 so far compared to the PS3 and PSP combined in the same period? Why did Sony abandon the Vita so quickly and concentrated all resources on the PS4? Yes, the high development costs are the main reason. There is currently no company that can supply two consoles with games at the same time - these times are over.

    It may be too early to call it, but I think nintendo is resting on its laurels like how it did after the wii got as huge as it is. I feel like we will still get a few solid games and the library is good so far, but I think we will see more dry years similar to 2020, more questionable subscription service decisions, and the hardware will continue to become outdated. I hope I am wrong, but I can definitely see nintendo getting arrogant

    At this point, I'm saddened at the lack of: NEW 1st party content and missing ports of Wii U games. Games also feel a little underdeveloped.
