God damn it man. I have been watching tutorials for years, why didn't you do this like 2 years before. Thanks 🙏 thanks it all makes sense after a shit ton of time. Thanks.
This video deserves way more views!! I've been getting really frustrated with my Gopro lately as the footage quality has been crap. Thanks to this beautifully in depth and well put together Tutorial I can finally put my camera to good use. Thank you!
Hey everyone I hope this video is useful for all of you because I put a LOT of work into this thing!! I'll try to answer any other questions you may have. But if you like to know my export settings, I do H.264, variable bit rate (VBR) for 1080 30fps: 18mbps, 1080/60fps: 25 mbps, 1440/30fps: 30mbps, 1440/60fps: 40mbps, 2160/30fps: 45mbps
JordanBoostmaster Great video man! After watching like 5 minutes at a time for a few days I finally watched the whole thing. Great tips, I'm definitely gonna use your advice. Right now I have the Gopro Hero, which is the simplest version in the Gopro line, but when I get a more advanced Gopro I'll use your settings for sure! Thanks so much for putting all that work into this video, it was really helpful
Thank you for all the great comments! I know a lot of you want to know some tips on color correction, I would like to do another video on that, I'm not sure when I can do it. But in the meantime let me tell you some basic things while working with NATIVE White Balance: First I increase the SATURATION to about 1.80 (if 1.00 is the default), or 180% (if 100% is the default) you can fiddle with that as you like. I also use the MIDTONE color wheels to adjust the color so that it looks properly white balanced, I find that working with midtones is better than adjusting the overall color wheel. Those are the basic main ways I color correct. There may be a few other things I might want to tweak like add a bit of warmth or coolness with the color temperature slider. And then I would usually add some contrast with curves.
I've been looking for a video like this for a long time. This is awesome, man. I appreciate your hard work in putting up this video. May I just ask what software or app do you use for color correction? And what kind of editing software do you use as well? And how do you render your videos with a great quality? Thank you very much. I hope you respond.
Been watching gopro tutorials for like 4 years trying to get my footage to look better. This is literally the only guide that has helped. great tutorial.
I come from a photography back ground and always hated how Gopro footage always seemed so bright and washed out. This video is deadly! Cant wait to put this knowledge to use, much appreciated!
Just bought a used go pro 4 silver. This is the best tutorial by a mile. Not only tells you the best setting but also explains why to use them. I always want to know why I’m doing something and not just learning like a parrot. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience and the time you put into this. Greetings from England.
I bought a Hero 5 Black when it launched and I just started to figure out what are the best settings. This video is the most detailed video I found so far and it helped me a lot! Really appreciate the amount of effort you put in this video.
I cannot imagine the amount of work and time you put into this. I would like to let you know that the effort shows. I watched it from start to finish (with two 1.5 minute breaks). The depth is incredible and the detail is stunning. One could even say that in a few places the depth is overdone or possibly repetitive even. But I must say this, you know what makes a truly great teacher? The ability to teach to the depth of your best student when needed yet teach at the speed of your slowest student when needed. And you have most certainly done that Jordan. Thank you so much. Well done, thanks for the amazing videos and keep up the great work!
Awesome dude, been struggling with over exposure since using protune and motion blur has been a pain, didn't even think 60fps would sort it out - I thought it would make it worse by taking more pics. Guess the next logical video would a guide on colour correcting (in GoPro studio ideally!.) Thanks again.
Hey Jordan, one year on and this is still relevant, thanks so much for putting this video together. I’m a professional photographer and videographer and it all makes perfect sense the way you control the shutter speed with fps and exposure compensation. I’ve always been lazy with my gopros as I only use them for my hobbies, not any professional work, but this is great and you broke it all down perfectly. I’ll be looking forward to better footage of me riding when we head out next!! Keep up the great work man, all your videos are really inspirational and have so much helpful tips in. Great stuff!! 👍
This video is without a doubt, the best I have ever found in explaining the settings and how they ACTUALLY work on the camera. Thank you for this, Jordan!
Well done and THANK YOU for taking the time to create this tutorial. You have explained and shown the results in the GoPro settings in a wonderfully explained way. This helped me immensely in understanding the settings and how to get the best recording for my own editing. I really appreciate the time it must have taken you to create this.
Jordan, do you jave amy recommended settimg for underwater gopro settings? Which white balance setting provides more warmer colors to come through? Auto is a nightmare. Colors jump from blue to green pretty often. Limiting the ISO I heard is highly suggested.
This is definitely the best GoPro tutorial I've found so far. I've never owned a GoPro and recently purchased a Hero4. This for sure was more helpful than all the other videos combined. All the other were basically just an "unboxing" video. Thanks for the vid!!
What bit rate do you render in for youtube? - I assume you change it according to what you record in. When riding I typically use 1080 superview 60fps. RUclipss compression leaves pixels, I've tried multiple bit rates but all end up with pixels. Thanks

great video! i accidentally sat through the whole thing because i was so captivated by what was being said. you truly are a great teacher when it comes to things like this. being able to captivate an audience while still staying on track and being informational. thank you!
Thank you !!!!!!! Finally a video that goes into step by step detail of how this all works and what it all means !!!! This is just what us "older" people needed !!! Excellent video !!
Excellent!! I thought i knew it "all" :-), but a long life has shown me that there is always people out there who knows stuff much better. A really simple and excellent tutorial.
Hi Jordan, This was a really interesting video for me. I am a 68 year old man with a fair amount a knowledge about still photography. I do a lot of road cycling and use a GoPro to record footage of our rides in the mountains. I really didn't have a good understanding for what the various GoPro settings did and how they related to the "still photo" concepts (f-stop, shutter speed, ASA, etc.) that I did understand. Also, the frame rate settings were somewhat of a mystery to me (in terms of getting the optimal images for cycling). Your video really helped me to begin to make more sense of how to use these settings to get the results that I want. It was obvious from the video that you had invested a lot of thought and time in putting it together. It was very organized and relatively easy to understand. Great job and thank you!!
Wow, thank you. I have used gopros for forever, they are what i grew my channel on, the only cameras i own and I never understood these things well. This has helped me so much!
Jordan, this was absolutely an awesome video ! I just got a GoPro 4, that I purchased from my son. I have more knowledge of still photography, so at 65 years old, this is a new beginning for me, but I love a challenge ! I can tell that you have a good knowledge of the F-stops, aperture and ISO, and how they interact with each other. Thank you so much for sharing, your increase of knowledge will constantly improve the desire to explore new ways of creating different ideas to invent new ways of capturing the world in which we live.
I've had my GoPro 4 Black sitting around without much use due to not taking the time to properly use it. Thanks for taking your time to make this video sharing your knowledge of the camera paired the the knowledge of film making. Kudos for the great job putting this together. Can't wait to bring it out again. Thanks so much !
Best GoPro Settings and why video on RUclips! The real before and after is invaluable. GoPro should link this video from their website and save thousands of headaches! I’m officially subscribing. Cheers!
Ive just started using GoPro. I have a GoPro Hero 5 Session. Without this video, I wouldn't have had a hope of understanding how to use any of the settings. Thanks.
i've watched almost every single video on youtube on how to get better quality on the GoPro. Your video explains everything that i need to know.. THANK YOU!
finally i'm able to understand my gopro how i wanted to when i first got it! so thankful for this video man, all the hard work put into it really payed off, a lot less confused goproers due to this
Thanks for putting the work into explaining all of this -- it's the best detailed guide with the "whys" rather than just the "whats" of setting things up, hugely useful!
Great video. It seems like everyone else who is talking about cinematic GoPro content focus on post.prod. only. This in-depth look at camera settings and how they each and combined affect the image is just priceless! Thanks a lot!
Holy shit...mind blown! Thank you so much for putting this together Jordan! This has got to be the most helpful GoPro tutorial I've ever watched and I've watched A LOT! You not only talked about what you used but you also showed the difference it makes in your videos.
I can tell you put a lot of work into this. This has been by far the best "how to" video I've seen! Easy to understand. Great to follow along! I've made a few adjustments now to my GoPro following your guidance. Can't wait to get out there now and see how it turns out! Thanks again!!
Bro, the attention to detail and your personal opinion comes from the time and effort you have put into it, besides you going to "camera school". You are of value! You get my thumbs up and a new subscriber Thanks again, Luis
The best help out there for me. I like people that tells you and shows you what there talking about. The one guy ride a motorcycle and all he did was bla bla bla bla talked and never showed me nothing. People that tell me and show me are the one for me. Thank You Jordan Boostmaster for a very great video.
I appreciate your thorough explanation and attention to detail especially with the comparisons. Your terminology is concise and simple. Thank you for your efforts. They will make my first experience with the GoPro positive.
Cheers man! The one and only useful GoPro guide on RUclips. And I mean it. I have my GoPro Hero 4 Silver since the release. Which means, I made tons of shtty videos with several different settings. Browsing youtube to find something will help me. Every single one of them are useless since, but today! I watched this video 3 times. And now I'm finally understand the mechanism of this frckn lil' camera. And with this understanding I finally was able to shot my first, properly made video. I got what I wanted to get. Many years of misery and sadness comes to an end. I subscribed to your channel, as I'm really into downhill as well. Just I am not able to do it because of my spine desease. It's fun to watch anyways. Keep up bro!
Hi Jordan...I was really desperate to understand my new Gopro 4 and thanks to you within an hour or so I have made all the set ups I needed. Your explanations were nicely supported with your different takes! Thank you very much!
Just ordered a GoPro Hero 5 and glad I found this video before it arrives, I can now get it setup almost instantly without too much mucking about :) Thanks dude
So stoked I stumbled upon this! Phenomenally well done, especially by youtube standards. As the happy owner of a new Session, I am now a HAPPIER owner, understanding how it works as well as what it does. Truly awesome, thanks very much.
If RUclips had Emmy’s this would be a winner. I’m using these settings today on a ride. I have always edited in IMovie so not use for pro settings like these. I’ll have my video up tomorrow. Check out my current video and see the difference. LowCountry MTB
Definitely going to start using these tips for future motovlogs. Thanks for all of the effort put into making this. You deserve SO many more views. Just the best GoPro guide out there.
This video is GOLD, the effort is very appreciated! I just got a Hero 4 and your video is exactly what I've been looking for! I can't wait to get out there and try some of the settings you recommended. Thanks!!!
I'm wanting to get a GoPro, but I also want my footage to be on point, this entire video opened my eyes to the options available and your recommended settings seemed to make a lot of sense to me! Thanks so much!
Wow, as a very casual GoPro user this has been the most informative video I have ever watched! Thank you! We often dirt bike through similar lighting situations to what you do; in and out of trees, bright to dark, lancing sunlight etc... My videos have always been an overexposed, bright and blurry mess in those situations. Honestly, I stopped recording because of the poor quality. Can't wait to try out some of the suggestions you made and get back to recording!
good breakdown of the what and why of settings. Especially helpful knowing that flat only impacts the shadows and that - exposure compensation increases shutter speed. But to be honest my favorite part is when you stabbed your front wheel between the two trees! Been there done that! Thanks so much
Briefly watched some other "Tune your GoPro" videos here.. And still the best to this date! With all the examples and comparisons, this is what it means to care about your audience!
Thank you, totally need this. Step DAD has a HERO 4. Figured I could use this one he gave me, to decide if I really want to get into making riding videos.
Brah, you sounds like Edward Norton when you narrate. It made this video that much more awesome. Thought you were going to go all out when you were talking about Native White Balance.
Wow.. Awesome video. Thank you. I can appreciate all the work that went into this. Watched the whole video and have never used a go pro, don't have money to buy one if I wanted to, but I watched the whole video because of how you presented it. Kickass
Thanks for putting this together Jordan. Very helpful! I did a bunch of tests today and was heading in the direction you sent us, but you save me a ton of time really digging into it all. Thank you!!!
Thank you man, it's one of the best tutorials I've seen ever, on anything. Very in-depth and informative. I can't wait to go filming and see what I'll come up with.
Hey I made a new updated tutorial video on the new GoPro Cameras! ruclips.net/video/aXshRzgoSQE/видео.html
we are in 2019 and this is still THE video for understanding and setting up any gopro! Cheers!
thanks , I am also working on a video like this of the Hero 7
@@JordanBoostmaster This is stil valid in 2020 :-) Dude thats the best GoPro tutorial ever!!!
@@JordanBoostmaster Yes, also just reviewed this again, so useful
Just scored a Hero 4 and haven't had a GoPro since the 3. Very helpful
God damn it man. I have been watching tutorials for years, why didn't you do this like 2 years before. Thanks 🙏 thanks it all makes sense after a shit ton of time. Thanks.
Also I just understood that my GoPro is a way better camera when I comes to video compared to my double price g7x. God damn it?
glad you enjoyed it!
I'm sending over an Asian Hooker!
===D~
Haven't made it through the whole video yet, but there's some good juicy information in here. Thank you Jordan.
you're welcome!

Great work Jordan. That was a good in-depth analysis of the Color Profile.
Sweet I was actually wondering about that. So you use Premiere Pro?
yes premiere pro
JordanBoostmaster Great video man! After watching like 5 minutes at a time for a few days I finally watched the whole thing. Great tips, I'm definitely gonna use your advice. thanks, yes I think I might do that at some point
1 year later, you help me a lot to get better footages for my FPV channel. Huge thanks to you my friend. take care!
What bit rate do you render in for youtube? - I assume you change it according to what you record in.
When riding I typically use 1080 superview 60fps. RUclipss compression leaves pixels, I've tried multiple bit rates but all end up with pixels.
Thanks
Ya I know RUclips still compresses everything anyway, but for 1080 60 fps video, I export it at about 25 mbps
JordanBoostmaster cheers mate 👌 happy riding!
The "pixels" are generally from bitrate starving, best way I've seen to compensate is just uploading at higher quality.
Arctic Pride I render 45mbps which is nearly exactly the same as the raw file. I've tried increasing and decreasing it an neither have worked or made a big difference. I've even tried youtubes recommended render settings.

As others said this is the best video on explaining GoPro recording settings. GoPro should include this video for the cameras they sell.
Man really appreciate this, hard to find knowledgable mountain biking oriented videos

Your video really helped me to begin to make more sense of how to use these settings to get the results that I want.

Just found this video after getting My Hero 5. Thanks for the work. First time Gopro user.

Nice video and a very nice ride in Whistler, damn i miss this place :)
Hey Jordan, you've added so much value. Your video is very informative, packed with example footages with what you're saying. More videos please!
I just bought a gopro hero 4 silver yesterday. I have a lot to learn. I found this video very helpful.Thankyou.
Absolutely essential and must see video to get the best off Hero 5. It helps me a lot. Congratulations.
good breakdown of the what and why of settings. Especially helpful knowing that flat only impacts the shadows and that - exposure compensation increases shutter speed. But to be honest my favorite part is when you stabbed your front wheel between the two trees! Been there done that!
Thanks so much
This video helped me talk pro in 45 mins.. Loved the comparisons to show each effect. Good work 👌👌
Briefly watched some other "Tune your GoPro" videos here.. And still the best to this date!
With all the examples and comparisons, this is what it means to care about your audience!
Thank you, totally need this. Step DAD has a HERO 4. Figured I could use this one he gave me, to decide if I really want to get into making riding videos.
I've never seen a better GoPro video! So much good explained good information! Awesome!
having recently just getting into the "GoPro" game, I was often disappointed with my footage. thanks for putting this together!
Thank you so much for sharing the info! Shutter speed, ISO, color tone, etc. is so much information to remember and you explained it simply. Thank you
Thank you so much!! This is going to be very helpful as i start using my new hero5!! Thanks for putting so much work into that video!! :D
Brah, you sounds like Edward Norton when you narrate. It made this video that much more awesome. Thought you were going to go all out when you were talking about Native White Balance.
Great tips, I really appreciate the advance level of understanding of what the settings actually do. Thanks Jordan!
The Video i searched for since months . Awesome thank you ! The best one so far
Wow.. Awesome video. Thank you. I can appreciate all the work that went into this. Watched the whole video and have never used a go pro, don't have money to buy one if I wanted to, but I watched the whole video because of how you presented it. Kickass
this is the first time i enjoy and understand from a tutorial....keep up the good work
Thanks for putting this together Jordan. Very helpful! I did a bunch of tests today and was heading in the direction you sent us, but you save me a ton of time really digging into it all. Thank you!!!
This is the best gopro tutorial i have ever seen! Great Work! Thank You, Jordan!
Thank you man, it's one of the best tutorials I've seen ever, on anything. Very in-depth and informative. I can't wait to go filming and see what I'll come up with.
great vid. The tip about the flat profile only effecting the shadows is particularly useful...
Love this detailed setup and explanation of each feature on the gopro. Thanks so much!
