At last....Been watching tons of RUclips videos to get this subject explained to me without success. You are a star, I now understand the settings. Thanks a bunch
thanks a lot, I want to film probably my last vacation with my grandpa. he is getting old and I want to remember it, with your help i can capture all the greatest mmoments
Dude, I am 58 and I wish my kids were still near me because any piece of tech stuff I used to just give it to them and they would hand it back in 10 min. and tell me more than i could drink in at one time. But....they are all grown and gone so I am glad your here! :) I am just beginning. I work in the fitness industry as Club Ambassador and that just means I connect with clients and keep them involved and appreciated and have fun. I started a "book of heroes" (name of brand is Heroes Fitness) ... it's just the stories of whoever will participate. But we found people would rather do a 30 sec clip than to sit down and type out a few paragraphs. I just need to learn how to use this thing and the only thing I can see is, turn it on, play with it and keep watching your videos lol....I don't see a place for an external mic but I am also needing the most simple editor. I have the gopro program on my ios phone so unless you say otherwise...I think I will try it first since I am just beginning anyway. Wish me luck! lol Any advise is so welcome!!!!
Hey, this is 10 months ago, but if you haven't got your hands on some good editing software, get Davinci Resolve, it's the best free editing and color-grading software out there. Then pop into youtube 'basic DaVinci resolve editing' and away you go ;) Good luck!
Yup, that's aperture/depth of field etc.. get a camera with interchangeable lenses, is the most basic way to answer that. In basic terms, there's a lower number on lenses such as 1.4, 2.8 or higher at 16.. it's sometimes marked with a letter f, like f1.4 etc.. the lower the number, the more blur. Basically that number tells you the amount of length that is in focus.. say your focus is tight at 2 feet in front of you, the f number is at 2 feet and up to the f number is how far past 2 ft it is still in focus. Please note that I am using simplified examples and not the actual measurements. A 28mm f1.4 lens is not measured in feet. Hope this helps
I am just now learning how to edit videos and use Premier Pro. I have taken tons of video up skiing and have only published a couple, mainly from my iPhone. Learn, learn, learn. Thanks you helped out a lot.
I'm a motovlogger from India .. I was using the Sj cam but recently upgraded to go pro hero 5 black ; This video was really helpful specially the color part.
Thank you ! I bought the hero 5 and started filming - no clue what i was doing. :-) What happens is that the footage in the cutting progress is just not as i wanted it to be. So now, trying to get deeper into the settings, to have a good end product, your video really helped. I believe that this is a really good camera for all kinds of filming. Its just all about the settings and the handling. I subed. You tutorials are very understandable for beginners like me. i subed :-) All the best !
Thanks for the video. I just got into the video editing realm. I have several different gun channels on here and I usually just let my knowledge and skill draw the intrest but I have recently decided to invest some money and time into learning how to edit to take my channel to that next level. I'm just editing in iMovie, using the GoPro to get first hand shooting footage and voicing over, also adding in segments that were filmed on a different camera until I get my mic for the GoPro.
Just bought an old Hero Black 5 , just suscribed and this video is really helpful, thanks for your effort in giving out this helpful info, saves tons of hours.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have had my GoPro for a year and just now am able to use it more effectively because of this video! I use iMovie to edit my stuff. As someone very electronically challenged I really appreciate all the step by step instruction and explanation!
Thanks for the in depth look at the GoPro Hero 5 settings. I just recently purchased a Hero 5 Black and was looking for some more info on the different settings. I really don't have an editing preference yet. I'd love to hear more about the different options that are available. Anyway, keep up with the great content.
Thanks for this explanation vid! I bought my HERO5 two months ago and I never realized I could change all those ProTune settings on the GoPro itself.. I still thought this had to be done in some GoPro software. Stupid me :) Oh and I am using Sony Vegas to edit my footage, love this piece of software! :D I used to work a lot with Premiere but I always found it too complicated to work with. Now, comparing Vegas to Premiere, I do realize they are both as powerful but I prefer to work with Vegas.
I have the Hero 4 Silver & the Hero 5 Black! Editing with Premiere Pro. The Auto White Balance is really accurate and versatile nowadays! 4.7 with 60fps works well as an acquisition setup! The Hero 4 silver has that connector where you just plug a little dongle in and I can use a hardwired shotgun, lavalier or wireless mic with no problem! The Hero 5 Black there's a modification once you put it in Stereo that you can surgically drill three holes in the case which will let the microphones here much better! So switching back and forth berween both cams gives me great interesting and closely matched Audio & Video!
I'm late to the show but... I plan to use my GoPro Hero 5 Black simply for outdoor recording of my hikes, canoeing, camping etc so all I'm looking for is simple clean video and good sound. I have opted for an external mic with the GoPro mic adapter. My editing software, which I've used for years now is CyberLink PowerDirector. Mostly straight out of camera with a few tweaks here and there. Nothing overly complicated...
thank you so much for this video. I am new to gopro, even though I have had the thing for nearly a year! There are so many people with so many different ideas on what to do I was so confused. I have now bought an external mic because i realised after making a video the sound quality was totally awful, no matter how and what i did, so with that fixed ,now I am able to go forward .. thanks so much for the hints and recommendations, I am going to be trying them out this week.
A co-worker found a GoPro Karma in his neighbor's tree. The neighbor let him have it and he brought it to work and I eventually bought the drone AND the Hero 5 that was still in it. I don't have a controller for the drone so I am focusing on the camera itself for now. It works great so far. I haven't put it to a real outdoor test though. I have been using Cyberlink Powerdirector for all my previous videos regardless of what camera. I am still learning about resolution and your explanation was very helpful. I hope Cyberlink will be good with this because I really like it. Thanks
Using Final Cut Pro 10 and have been very happy with the results. I did some videos of a vintage drum event combined with a slider and it worked very well. Appreciate your knowledge and videos. Cheers, Pete
Very helpful video! Thanks! I've recently upgraded to FCPX and am working my way up the learning curve with all the cool editing tricks I can do. I'm glad you recommend GoPro color mode. Most pro users recommend flat mode which requires color correction to make it look right, and I can never make the color look natural.
I’m all a bit new to GoPro & only done a few short family holiday videos. But I really want to get back into capturing more footage. I’ve watched a ton of videos today on tips of shooting and settings, but found this video super useful on the settings side to have my hero5 on. It would be great to see what you would edit on or would suggest to invest in for the occasional GoPro user, some basic skills or guide to what software to use & any tutorials would be so helpful. It’s one thing filming, but another editing, which takes forever. I’ve only used windows movie maker, which done a nice and simple job, but seemed pretty basic, once I got the hang of it. But thanks for the tips on this video, really knowledgable and explained so well.
Jamie cheers Jamie. For PC users look into Sony Vegas for editing. Or Sony movie studio. Its been a long time since I’ve edited on a PC. I’ve been using adobe creative cloud for a long time but it’s a pretty steep Pay Wall for a casual user. Maybe adobe premiere elements? Again really unsure cost with all of these.
Yeah I’ll look into those options then, thanks a lot. I did start using the GoPro editor, but found any footage I have from my iPhone (videos) I couldn’t seem to use in addition to my hero5 footage, so assumed GoPro was there own footage only. So why I moved onto Windows movie maker, which I could use all on, but like I say, was very basic. This is definitely one area I want to improve, especially the filming on GoPro. I guess one thing I have also struggled with is using at night and low light, but I believe this is GoPros down side generally. Appreciate the reply. Thanks
Thank you for the very informative video. I just got my Hero5 this morning and now have it set up. I will start playing with it tomorrow. Previously I used my Hero3 White. To answer your question about editing, I have used GoPro Studio and Adobe Premiere Elements 8.
Really enjoyed this video you covered everything and Explained why you use the settings. but can you pretty please make an video on using the Time lapse settings on the Hero5.☺ great Video 2 thumbs up.
Nice video!! Currently paused my channel because waiting for my audio gear. I used gopro too for my channel as it is small & the easy to manage. Currently edited my videos using hitfilm, just a free software & still saving to upgrade to premiere pro
thanks for your tutorial Ryan. I just got my Gopro 5 Hero Black and am playing around with it. The settings you recommend do look pretty good. I use Cyberlink Powerdirector 15 for my editing. I actually want to use the GoPro to shoot the coming total eclipse. I will be using my Canon Camera (with Baader solar filter) for the photographs but also wanted to record a video sequence of it as well using the GoPro. Going to have to try a number of settings to see what works out best for the changing conditions of the eclipse. Thanks again!
Hello. Tks for great information. I am still newish in learning about go pro. Had a hero 3 silver and just bought a gopro hero 5 black. ......love it. I am using Premier Pro. Lots to learn but getting their. :) Going to search for you video that shows how you mounted your better mic. Hope you have a video on that. Cheers!
Regarding your inquiry on video editing, a good editor for the average person is Movavi. A one-time 50 dollar download from Amazon. I have used the big brands and have found Movai to be more reliable and practical. Enough features, such that it will take a couple of years to figure them all out.
Hi Ryan, great video. I have tried out your settings and it has transformed the look of my own recordings. My question to you, what would you change and to what, for recording a fireworks show, and recording on a roller coaster?
Someone else recently asked me about fireworks via email. I have never tried, but I'd imagine taking shots of fireworks with a gopro is extremely difficult. That being said I would recommend a low ISO and a high shutter speed. for fireworks. As for rollercoaster, the settings above should work just fine for that. Just always think about your end product and how you will "deliver" or post the video. if youre going to end in 1080 try filming in 2.7 or 4k and downsizing in post.
Hey Ryan, thanks a lot for the amazing video, and great explanation . Could you please give me tips about what settings to use on GoPro 5 black to shoot kind of action video about a car [camera be placed inside] and what external microphone to use to record high decibels of exhaust sound [ mic will be mount next to exhaust pipes ] .thank you so much , have a wonderful day
Great tips in your video. Im still using iMovie for my video editing. It's maybe time to look at up grading to a more advanced program, just not sure which way to go with those options.
Question you may know. Are you able to export your videos from your GoPro 5 into an IPad PRO 2018 using the USB-C cable? My IPad doesn’t find the videos and cant fina a solution... Thanks for the great video - really learn a lot!
hello and sorry they gave me a 5..even if old I find it fabulous ... I would like to ask you for the slow motion, is there a button on purpose? I don't understand how to do it .. thanks and best wishes
Thanks for the info and the explanation ! I am amateur on this, and I'd like to to interviews to my sons with my Go Pro 5, any sugestions for a mic ? Thanks again
Great Video, I race slot cars and want to video all the races because i do some pretty big races, and im new to the GoPro 5 black, i need a link to a good editing service as well ?
I'm using Pinnical 24 but I'm still learning it. I did a few test runs and the video replay was jumpy and really no good. I'm not sure how to go from 4k on the camera to 1080p. You probably wont see this but a quick message if you have the time. I am SOOOOO new at this.
@@RyanTimms Thanks for responding. I think you may have miss understood my question. I film something and it plays back in a shuddering, jumpy manor instead if a steady replay. It's like no stabilization. I have tried the 4k and 1080p at 30f/sec setting with no difference. I have tried different micro sd cards and still the same problem. Do I have to do something with it before I can playback on my computer? Instead of a clear stable replay like yours I get the 1920 version of movies.
Great Video, I'm facing some problems with my Gopro hero 5 camera and I'm wondering if others facing the same problems! 1- Some times the camera hang and won't be able to turn off the camera or do any function. 2- While recording in Time labse mode, the timer so slow and not same as the actual time. 3- The voice control in the camera not 100% correct, for example if i say Gopro stop recording the cam will start to record. Please share your experience.
ahmed abushar not sure I can help much here. I don't have any of those problems except the voice command. It sometimes grabs the wrong words. So I only turn it on when absolutely necessary. The rest I am unsure.
ahmed abushar For the time lapse mode the timer will show the length of the video file that is being created not how long the video has been recording for. So if you record at 1 second intervals it will take 24 seconds to make on second of video (assuming 24 fps playback). Hope this helps.
Ryan I am a photographer and I want to start doing vlogging in the field. What would you recommend regarding audio? Should I have an external lav mic and use an audio recorder and sync the audio in post?
Hey I just bought a GoPro hero5 black and have been filming my duck hunts with it. All the action starts 30 minuets before sunrise. What settings would you recommend sense light level is so low. Filming now in 1080, 60fps, medium, protune off. Thanks.
Jonathan Segal I’ve been a long time user and meet really used much final cut. I’ve only ever edited 1 project on it honestly, but don’t have a huge want to change. I enjoy my creative cloud and that I have access to all sorts of software as my creative process changes and grows.
In terms of the battery. Have you tried non-gro brand batteries? If so do you find them as good as gopro hero 5 and/or would you recommend for them or against.
I'm using iMovie but man my video sucks big time, thats why I'm here lol I want t get that clear cinematic look. I shot today in 2.7K 30fps but gonna go shoot again tomorrow with your settings and see how it goes. I'm shootin prt inside and part outside with the sun.
Hi there. Thank you for this video, was helpfull. May you tell something about the ISO? I shoot weddings and I use my GP 05 black as a second camera. What is the max iso i can use without to get noise? I use Edius 6 to edit my videos
you're going to see noise in anything low light with these cameras they just struggle to do a good job..for a wedding I'd focus more on getting the shot than worrying about noisy footage. 800-1600 should be acceptable as a backup angle. but either way its not gonna be great.
@@RyanTimms I already use my Gp on 1600 iso. Not bad actually ;) I only would like to know if is possible to increase this number, but you already responsed. Thank you so much for your attention! Good shots!!!
this totally helped me, but right now im struggling to find the right settings for lowlight on my hero5, what settings (ISO,fps, etc) can you recomend? thank you (new sub)
3:20 - 3:30 audio sounds like the parasitic "helicopter" noise that is prevalent on many Hero4 Silvers. It's wifi interference stemming from an improperly shielded mic and wifi antenna (they sit close together on the H4S). I think that you can hear it here clearly since you've gained up the signal quite a bit. I was hoping that the H5 black would not have this issue. Have you experienced it on other clips with wifi on? On the H4S it is only audible when the wifi is on. Nice vid though... thanks!
Using Adobe Premier 15. Just getting started with this program. Also, do you know how to take out the noice when holding the camera? Sounds everytime you try to move hand och direction.
Sorry, but one more thing. Wind noise might be a problem on high passes so could I just stick a piece of foam over camera mike to lessen wind noise? Thanks
My apologies if it is mentioned already in the comments, I am looking but do not see any.....but can you tell me about that case? The only ones I’ve seen for a mic mount are the metal ones, this looks nice!
Ryan Timms oh, ok....I’m sorry, it looked plastic to me but maybe it just the angle from your video. I thank you for the reply and the tips. I see they’ve had some bad press last week with their CEO, but I love their products. I’m new to the GoPro world though and again, thank you for these helpful tips and leads!
yes sadly GoPro isnt doing so well in recent years with the failure of the Karma system and their CEO troubles. but I love their equipment. Other alternatives I've heard good things about are the Sony action cams and the Yi 4k+.
At last....Been watching tons of RUclips videos to get this subject explained to me without success. You are a star, I now understand the settings. Thanks a bunch

I use Video Studio X10. Works great for me. Never touched the standard protune settings but I will tryout your settings to see what it does. Thx

will definitely follow these tips
Thanks for the video! What beginners video editing software do you recommend??
Hi Ryan, great video. I have tried out your settings and it has transformed the look of my own recordings. My question to you, what would you change and to what, for recording a fireworks show, and recording on a roller coaster?
Someone else recently asked me about fireworks via email. I have never tried, but I'd imagine taking shots of fireworks with a gopro is extremely difficult. That being said I would recommend a low ISO and a high shutter speed. for fireworks.
As for rollercoaster, the settings above should work just fine for that. Just always think about your end product and how you will "deliver" or post the video. if youre going to end in 1080 try filming in 2.7 or 4k and downsizing in post.
this was so so so helpful!!! thank you!!
Love your video thanks but can I upside-down device like hang on my neck while I am running (?freehand) what video will be
Hey Ryan, thanks a lot for the amazing video, and great explanation . Could you please give me tips about what settings to use on GoPro 5 black to shoot kind of action video about a car [camera be placed inside] and what external microphone to use to record high decibels of exhaust sound [ mic will be mount next to exhaust pipes ] .thank you so much , have a wonderful day
I Really liked the video, I am trying to learn my GoPro Hero 5. I can be confusing. Thank you
Great tips in your video.
Im still using iMovie for my video editing.
It's maybe time to look at up grading to a more advanced program, just not sure which way to go with those options.
Hi! What cage/housing are you using with the GoPro5 to add cold shoe attachments?
Question you may know. Are you able to export your videos from your GoPro 5 into an IPad PRO 2018 using the USB-C cable? My IPad doesn’t find the videos and cant fina a solution... Thanks for the great video - really learn a lot!
I'm using adobe premiere elements 15, thanks for the tip.
hello and sorry they gave me a 5..even if old I find it fabulous ...
Great tips man.
Im editin my gopro footages on sony vegas.
Extremely helpful, thank you man :-D
Using my GoPro 5 Black to capture my road bike rides. Also using GoPro Quik to edit my clips.
Can the hero5 support two wires less mics for interviews
Great Video, I race slot cars and want to video all the races because i do some pretty big races, and im new to the GoPro 5 black, i need a link to a good editing service as well ?
GoPro Quik is an easy way to put together of video (of pictures and videos) on a single subject.
Thank you for your grrat video! Subscribed!
I'm using Pinnical 24 but I'm still learning it. I did a few test runs and the video replay was jumpy and really no good. I'm not sure how to go from 4k on the camera to 1080p. You probably wont see this but a quick message if you have the time. I am SOOOOO new at this.
If you swipe left on the screen it should give you access to all the settings you're looking for!
Excellent video
Good tips👍🏾
Great video, thanks for this.
Ryan... what is the setup (case) you have on this video to attach the microphone on the GoPro Hero 5 black.
search "GoPro Hero 5 Cage" in amazon and lots of options similar to this come up.
Thanks Ryan!
Thank you man!
how to you make the background "blurry"?
That is called depth in field effect my friend, and I don't think that gopro has it :(
Can you tell me what the Go pro housing is that holds the Rode VideoMic Pro? and if you don't mind could you provide a link to the mic and bracket.
Search amazon for "GoPro Hero 5 Cage" and look for one that has a cold Shoe mount on top.
Thanks
Hi there, Does gopro 5 has a loops option please ? Thank you
Thanks man for this video 😊
Ryan I am a photographer and I want to start doing vlogging in the field. What would you recommend regarding audio? Should I have an external lav mic and use an audio recorder and sync the audio in post?
Hey I just bought a GoPro hero5 black and have been filming my duck hunts with it. All the action starts 30 minuets before sunrise. What settings would you recommend sense light level is so low. Filming now in 1080, 60fps, medium, protune off. Thanks.
Great video!! I’m using Final Cut Pro. How come you prefer premiere?
Hi where can I get a frame like yours appreciate your input
3:20 - 3:30 audio sounds like the parasitic "helicopter" noise that is prevalent on many Hero4 Silvers. It's wifi interference stemming from an improperly shielded mic and wifi antenna (they sit close together on the H4S). I think that you can hear it here clearly since you've gained up the signal quite a bit. I was hoping that the H5 black would not have this issue. Have you experienced it on other clips with wifi on? On the H4S it is only audible when the wifi is on. Nice vid though... thanks!
Hey mate, grate tutorial. I will subscribe.
I'm using AE for my edits.
Kip it up mate!!!!
Using Adobe Premier 15. Just getting started with this program.
Also, do you know how to take out the noice when holding the camera? Sounds everytime you try to move hand och direction.
how about the perfect settings for night time?
Sorry, but one more thing. Wind noise might be a problem on high passes so could I just stick a piece of foam over camera mike to lessen wind noise? Thanks
My apologies if it is mentioned already in the comments, I am looking but do not see any.....but can you tell me about that case? The only ones I’ve seen for a mic mount are the metal ones, this looks nice!
This one is metal. Here's a link: amzn.to/2DeLqAA
