- The time has come! It's time to finally say that the modern version of then Rolex Day-Date in 40mm has completely overrun and past the previous 41mm Day-Date2 version. This took quite sometime to happen. When the drop of the market occurred and everything went down inn price it seems to be that the DD2 versions definitely went down a lot more than the current 40mm variation. Main reason I believe is SIZE!

Just bought my 4th Day Date 40. It’s the ultimate watch (and I have owned & worn most of the others). And the fluted platinum (baguette / ice blue) is simply stunning in the flesh. #1 by a mile.
I own this watch myself except mine is fluted plat ice blue with Roman’s.. I love both yours and mine… I also own a 228238 green dial.. if you love DD40 enough to buy the plat, then you need to buy the yellow gold green dial too man trust me.. its the ultimate modern daydate40 collection to have.. I love both equally and that’s saying something strong about the YG because we both know how amazing the platinum is… !! Also, I agree with your assessment on the dd40 in general.. it really is the ultimate watch, I also own many others including all the typical hype pieces .. DAYDATE40 just has a presence to it that is unmistakable flash/statment but with class

BTW I’ve moving away from yellow gold generally, and sadly their Rose gold looks bad on me. Bought one of the first GMTs in Everose … but sold after 6 months. Interestingly, many friends didn’t think it was real. A strange one indeed. A £8k profit but had I hung on … £22k profit, but hey ho… life’s easy in hindsight.

I think in terms of wearability the DD40 nails it. The bracelet is so well executed along with the general proportions of the piece and the dial combinations. That said in the DD range I don't think you can go too far wrong with 36, 40 or 41. Boils down to personal preference. Great topic Eric! Stay cool.

Nice comparison. I never thought 1mm chg’s were a big deal - just don’t go too small (36 is for ladies, sorry) and anything over 43 is ridiculous. TBH - and this will probably set some off - I’d love to see the Daytona go up 1mm.

Thinking selfishly, I wish Rolex would release a 38mm day-date. Would fit my needs perfectly. 40mm is a bit too big and 36mm a bit too small
the DD40 actually measures around 38.8mm so maybe give the 36mm a second look

I love the DD2 especially in PT.. Jubilee bezel on DD2 looks completely off. Smooth bezel on the DD2 match the size perfectly. That full diamond Roman dial are sublime and exclusively on the DD2 PT only.

It's nice that you stay open minded and let your opinions evolve! With that said, this took a *really* long time. I think you are the only person who has been talking about the Day Date 2 for the past 5+ years. It definitely deserved discussion in 2015/16 post DD40 release, but it's really a loser - and not just now (in 2023). As you covered: proportions, overall size, dials, deconstructed romans, bracelet improvements - it's just win/win/win regardless of any temporary pricing premium the DD2 might have enjoyed. Just an opinion - love your content from beautiful Miami.

I only disagree on the dials. The DD2s has a more creative dial selection with the waves, concentric, precious gems with enamel..... Despite, the DD40 won me over as well.
Day date 40 in platinum is where it’s at. IF you haven’t seen one with the fluted bezel, get ready to get knocked out!
I over payed about 5 grand for my day date 40. But I don’t give a damn because I love my dd40 . The dd2 is to bulky too overdone it’s beautiful but just to pretentious . anyone who really knows about Rolex knows the dd40 is all around the better made watch . Awesome video

40mm or more is ridiculous for a Day-Date. A dressy piece shouldn’t be bigger than 38mm
Rolex made a mistake making the DD2. They can't drop it overnight or everyone would know defeat. All the proportions were wrong. The DD 40 is here to stay for the next 50 years at least. Perfectly shaped in every way.

40 is the one for me. Day-date 2 looks dated right now but of coarse in time I will probably view things differently. It's just the fashion trends, the 40 is supreme right now In my humble opinion.

I LOVE both for DIFFERENT reasons TO be HONEST. The 40 IS a PERFECT watch to DRESS UP and the DD2 is MUCH more OF a CASUAL watch THAN the 40!
The market is trending smaller. I get it. But there is a fundamental draw to a larger head and dial, that being you get a better look at all the details that made you fall in love with it when you zoomed in on every detail when it was first released. Could it be said that those who like a larger dial are more drawn to design, whereas those who want smaller are more following the trend?

I've seen 38.6-38.8mm actual measurements, have you actually seen it measured at 38.5?

@@jimsturt yea, that's the reading I saw too (rounded up to 38.8). Wasn't able to find an exact on the dd2 just everyone calls it 41mm. I should measure mine and post it for posterity. These exact measurements really should be consolidated into a single thread.

DD2 is proportionally slightly awkward. It looks a tad bulbous.

I will take my Rolex explorer 40mm that tells time with same accuracy and is still Rolex. All these trivial details and made up stories about the history isn't worth the 30-40k extra. There is actually only 8k worth of gold in a 18k Rolex model. So take the price of a date just 10,500 add 8k you are at 18.5k. you go and pay 40k. no thanks. I have the money to buy these watches but know too much to fall for the trap of any high end watch manufacturer.I maximize brand and accuracy.

40mm should be the maximum size any sports watch should be. Even the new 41mm sub is very clunky. The maxi case size was perfect especially the no date version so iconic and the Hulk is perfect in every aspect more so than a Daytona.
What debate? The DD2 is horribly disproportionate, whereas Rolex nailed it with the DD40.
