    Pretty much the best sounding snare I've ever heard

      Yeah - But the toms are mixed / or does actually sound like crap.
      It's all preference though - of course :)
      imo drums sound crap. But they are iindeeeeeeeed very nice and expensive drums so must be shitty recording/mixing. For my ears once again!

    To those who are hating on Portnoy. Portnoy is a great drummer, a great drummer serves the song, don't overplay it and pushes it too the limit. If Portnoy was just a regular drummer as some of you guys say, he wouldn't play together with musicians like Jordan Rudess, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Neil Morse, Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert...

    • @Ironsvillage
      @Ironsvillage 9 лет назад +27

      The thing is compared to todays standards Portnoy is not that special. That said he influenced almost all of todays generation of drummers and the whole Progressive Scene. He's a Pioneer that took drumming to a next level when Dream Theater was still young. Actually he's probably the most influential Progressive (Metal) drummer there is.

      +Max E ahhh, nonsense. This guy is the Lars Ulrich of progressive rock. I listened to him back then too, and thought he was good, but now I think I was just stupid and didn't know better players at age 16

    • @etherianfields7486
      @etherianfields7486 9 лет назад

      ***** I just can't stand him, but my assertion is well-founded. The playing is high-school c-chair. Actually, he can't even play rudiments. It's painful to watch the guy play, sorry.

      I guess if you're invited to a "drum off" , and this is what you've got, I guess I would call the people who invited him into question.
      What difference does it make if you're famous? None.
      I would never pursue music as a career choice. I'm glad I didn't.

    I get what people mean when they criticize Mike Portnoy's solos. They are a bit formulaic, from what I've heard. (which isn't much). However, I find his drumming with a band to be extremely tasteful. He is good at choosing good grooves, good noises to fit the music, and plays them extremely well. (I haven't heard much of Mike Portnoy's music, that's what it seems like to me so far).

    • @TheGr8one1022
      @TheGr8one1022 4 года назад +1

      He's without a doubt the greatest drummer ever dude. The way he upped the game of drummers from the mid 90s to late 00s is unlike any other. Neil Peart is the only one that comes close. What you don't understand is that all these amazing drummers we see now exist BECAUSE of Portnoy and what he did for drunmkng. His time signature manipulation was the obvious influence for Meshuggahs sudden change in 1998, which then created Djent, along with so many other metal bands he influenced. He's also the only one of the more modern great drummers to actually have an create a hugely successful band.
      I mean look at clinicians like Thomas Lang, Donati, etc; what amazing music projects have they created? None, other than short term flash in the pans like Planet X. Who have they influenced? Nobody, they just so stick tricks and little drum solos, but fail to create a cohesive work of art like Mike.

    John has been able to put it in the right wording. That's the respectable way to look at it. I have been play'n 25 yrs and know my place in the music bar scene here where I live. The things the kids are doing now a days is awesome!!! I am no where near what Mike Portnoy is, but I know a few local guys that would make it a good show of drum talent. But it's all in the way any drummer would play anything, from the heart and soul.

    Guys, we all know what Mike is capable of. He's a fantastic drummer who inspired a lot of people to play drums a certain way. But you can bash on this video. He has recently seemed to have given up trying. He knows he's got a huge audience and he gets the paycheck to prove it. Unfortunantly he doesn't try to maintain that title.

    It's to show musicianship. That a drummer doesn't have to be the focal point of a band. For this song in particular it highlights the guitarist and key boards. He compliments there playing by playing non complicated pieces. Thats all there is too it.

  • @colie577
    @colie577 11 лет назад

    Creativity=subjective, to say that he's done a few tricks and rhythms is a understatement of his skill level.
    Even if I thought that Portnoy was the best drummer in the world, which I don't, wouldn't make me a fanboy. I'd be a fanboy if I said he was the greatest drummer in the world and said that all other drummers are terrible compared to him. I don't like him that much, I appreciate him as a musician, which I don't understand why you can't do the same and need to find a reason to dislike him.

    I completely agree with this. once you get to a certain point "best" or "better" is completely dependant on personal preference. Neil Peart can play anything Portnoy can and vice versa, they have differnt styles and genres. Your personal preference decides whose better. Same goes for other instruments. Drums and guitar are most commonly debated it seems. Vai and Petrucci can all play all of each others stuff, they write very differently though, etc.
    Besides music isn't a competion, just enjoy.

Look what he is doing here is pretty basic stuff for him. The guy has amazing phrasing,his technique compliments every track he plays on,he doesn't over do stuff,and he knows how to play in the pocket and out of the box. Always admired Portnoy. Thomas Lang is fantastic man,they all have their identity. Portnoy has his own style as well.

    Yes you are totally right ! Love Behemoth tracks,they are very agressive and sophisticated,especially on the Evangelion. You know, there are many extremely fast drummers,but Inferno is very creative in his job.I just dont feel bored when I am listening to him. Oh,my favourite is Jan Axel Blomberg (Hellhammer)originaly from Mayhem,but he played also with Dimmu Borgir,Jorn Lande etc...but mostly I like him for his work with Arcturus and Winds. He is very adaptable and talented (and underrated :/)

    Maybe a little or so, but if you're trying to expect him to play to the quality of Images and Words or Black Clouds and Silver Linings then don't expect here. The way he is playing is very evident to him playing in a similar fashion as Awake and Train Of Thought. Keep in mind that Mike Portnoy is more favorable to heavier influences than technical style, even though he has very much a talent in technical drumming, He pursues other things than drumming you know.

    I dont think it is fair to say that Portnoy is over rated- he has his own special style and plays with loads of emotion. dare I say it, Mangini plays like a complete robot but with absolute precision, whilst Portnoy has this specific sound which makes him so recognisable and sucessful
