I think if he wanted to do an engine transplant, Derek should go for the 8.1L with a 4L80E transmission and put some highway gears in the rear, like a 3.08. It would give him a much newer, and equally reliable engine as a 454 and the 4L80E would give him overdrive. With all the torque an 8.1L produces, it would accelerate like it had 3.73s in the rear. Very underrated engine/trans combo since it wasn't produced for very long but, he'd want to stick to 2001-2003 production years since that was when it produced 340 hp/ 455lb-ft.
The biggest upside to doing this is that its basically bolt in ready.

Keep that Ramp Truck! Face it with your “Will it run?” Videos and your busy schedule Jessica can come save you on the road! She is already comfortable driving it so she can load the boys up if need be go get you and the new ride. You can just always have it stocked with straps and rescue supplies plus it has a winch so regardless what your driving and regardless how bad the breakdown is you’ll be able to load and go. …… on the subject of speed of the truck the cheapest fix would be just changing ratio to something like 4.10 that big block has enough torque to keep everything happy and you’d be able to go 65 or 70 running without revving it to the moon

Memories last a lifetime it's what makes life worth living for sure.
Watching Derek n family is a treat for sure.
I didn't have much of that myself.
Couple trips from NY to Florida in the back of a pickup. Cause my dad moved to Florida when I was 7.
Never saw or heard much from him after that.
Eventualy I moved down there to Bradenton as a teen running from myself and my problems.
Most time I ever had with him was two years and working with him commercial fishing out of cortez. He was a man of few words to me but could talk to others for hours.
My mother tought me how to repair cars not my father.
Kids rememebr everything. And they want to be just like their parents.
Very important how we act around them and treat them. They become us. We become them.
But hopefully they become better than we were.

So glad y'all made it to your destination & very glad you found such a dependable vehicle; I gotta say that at the beginning of the video I had some concerns. Actually Derek, I know those high tail lights look kind of different, but they allow cars beside you to see you signal a turn or hit the brakes. They also give the high lights to let cars behind you know its a big truck. The Ramp Truck looks really good! I would polish those wheels when you get back. They will be shiny but not too shiny! With older rigs like this, It's not just another family trip... It's an Adventure! Boiled Peanuts are great! You need to try them. It's a southern thing, I would definitely keep her! I would not change the drivetrain until
this one fails. I'm kind of lazy like that though.

You are so gentle with Bentley. It is very clear that he WORSHIPS YOU , so please honor that as you guys work together.
My son and I worked together on car stuff. He now has a Race Car preparation on high end race cars for people who need him to prepare them and transport them to race tracks so they can have fun racing them.
All that time spent together surely pays off.

Nice to see you having your boy in the videos. I was born into a tree service and even though me and my dad don't get along that well I'm eternally grateful to have been taught a skill and a good work ethic at an early age. I enjoy your videos ty for making them and i look forward to seeing more.

I think it'd be cool to see a 6.6 Duramax in this thing, but you can't go wrong with a Cummins either. Or just freshen up that biggie block and put some more gooder gears behind it. All are good options for a guy's decent-ish rig. Can't wait to see what you do with it either way.

This truck is definitely a keeper. Do the rust repair on the rockers and the roof along with your usual undercoating on the bottom. You could do a Craig's list rebuild on the paint or this could be a great truck to haul around Independence 2.0. Paint it up with a red, white, and blue theme to match Independence. Love your videos Derek and love seeing your kids get involved!

@@smokeonthewater5287 Sorry to hear that. Alcohol in large quantities over and over is a terrible think. I sip every so often. I never went thru alcoholic parents or family. So I can’t imagine that. I had a dad. But we didn’t really work on cars. I wish we had. We fished a lot over the years and slowly quit going. He died in 4 days before Christmas last year.

My vote is 5 or 6 speed manual swap to get the RPMs down and keep it around. Add some VGG stickers to it like the cat farm crew cab and use it to haul cars to events. You could probably even add a hitch receiver and haul 2 cars to events. That big block will do the job!
