I am in total agreement so I think the supercharged 400 should go in it... But not yet. I would put a high .400 lift cam in it, let him tool that around for a little bit and get used to how snappy an sbc is... After he's got a handle on that, then put that heavy breather in it, on the fresh build all shining and looking like it doesn't belong in your shop😂 you know so nice it scares a fella. Keep the outside of the truck looking a little ratty when you open that jewelry box you see that diamond shining inside

Also quick trick for the window disconnect the regulator from the bottom of the window shove the wind or the whole way up and then put a piece of two-by-four in it to hold it up and run a drywall screw through an existing hole to hold the two-by-four in place...

Whenever you find yourself, condescending, overbearing, halfassed, impatient with amateur assistance, or humorless in the wake of adversity, be like Derek, not like my dad. Fifteen years of holding the flashlight and pumping the brake pedal only to be rewarded with, see above bad behavior, does not incentivise enthusiastic participation. I managed to learn despite him. I do not miss that time at all. Bentley is a calm, quiet, thoughtful, sensitive boy. They do not get seen much unless you have a dad like Derek that appreciates him and brings him to the forefront.

We worked on countless projects together, and always wrapped up at the end with one of our garage paint jobs, which my mom hated. Her washer & dryer lived in the garage, and these always took on a new "tint" with each paint job.

Definitely follow Bently's idea and drop the 400 in it. So awesome to see his interest and willingness to help out working with you. I think following through by using his swap idea would be great. Do a tear down investigation of the engine so we can see what all went wrong and if it's a core worth rebuilding at some other point.
Whatever you choose I'm sure will make for more great content. It's always a pleasure to watch you working on vehicles especially when one or more of the family is in on it too.

Derek, this has to be my favorite video, seeing you work with Bentley is so wonderful, and seeing him learn (And he already seems to know alot) is great, and will be a memory both of you will have for the rest of your lives. It also gives Bentley a useful skill that he will be able to use, even if he decides not to wrench on cars (He would be able to smell a scam from whomever works on it). Since Bentley worked on it so much, I say let him pick the engine, throw that supercharged 400 in there. It already does have that hot rod vibe, and that would totally complete that. Plus pre-LS, the 400 probably would have been the go-to engine for a hot-rodder back when this was hopped up with headers.
I also wanted to say as a huge, huge fan. Please don't feel pressured to make these videos instead of joining the family on a vacation. I know this is your livelihood, but man, 10 or 20 years from now, doing a revival isn't going to trump the time you wish you could have spent with the family. You work incredibly hard and you deserve the vacation!
And...Your garage is identical to mine "No, no, over there by the bow and arrow and....and...". "I can't find nothin'" :)

I love watching your videos especially the ones where the kids get involved. When they were young my wife was a stay at home Mom. I worked all the time.
I would by my cars to drive back and forth to work at garage sales and auctions. And very much like you, I would make them run to get them home. I usually would drive the cars for a while and then sell them for a profit.
Anyway, watching you work on this truck with Bentley brought back such great memories and some tears missing the good old days.
All of my kids, two boys and a girl, grew up to be successful and talented people. They still talk about the old cars and I still make salvage yard trips occasionally with my daughter. Doesn’t get any better than that.
