      When I apply drops for dryness, initially my eyes feel more lubricated. But after a few minutes they feel even more dry than before, especially if the drops contain carboxymethylcellulose. I use only the good brands (Systane , SootheXP…) including the ones you recommend for each of the 3 types of dry eye. This happens even with preservative free drops. Why is this happening?

    Hi there, Im pretty much new to your channel, and i love it that you have answers for problems a lot of ppl have.. I'm from New Zealand, and Im 61 years old, got diagnosed at 30 years old, with Macular Degeneration, a few years back I got Glaucoma, and about 4 years ago I got Bilateral cataracts, which the doctor said they cant remove them because the chances are high, that I could lose my sight very quickly.. I have drops for Glaucoma 3 times a day, and I get really dry eyes now, so in between these drops ive been putting in other drops to help reduce the burning, but it doesnt really help at all.. But anyway I just wanted to let you know that im about on your pages at times, and I just wanted to say I think you are awesome at explaining things, and you are just being so happy to be helping others on here.. Keep up the great work..👓😀

      THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!! I really can't tell you how much this means for me to hear. I also appreciate you sharing a bit of your story. Eye drops for glaucoma often do contain harsh preservatives and may contribute to ocular surface disease. Hopefully, your doctor may be able to help you switch to preservative free formulations. The eye drop Alphagan is also well known for causing eye irritation and allergy. I'm bummed to hear that you are not a great candidate for cataract surgery. Hopefully, your prognosis stabilizes or improves. Again, I really appreciate you and your comment. Thank you!!

    My eyes feel worse after eye drops even when using preservative-free lubricating eye drops (not the redness relief kind). IMO, lubricating eye drops don't really help with evaporative dry eye because they evaporate within minutes and leave the eye drier than before.

    My dry eye routine continues to grow every year, and it's exacerbated by my glaucoma, Simbrinza followed by DuoTrav, followed by Xiidra to start my day. Aritficial tears throughout the day. Evening is warm compress, followed by Lid'n'lash cleaning/massage, followed by Simbrinza, and again followed by Xiidra. Adds up to over 75 minutes everyday of eyecare. IOL has helped lower the eye pressure and I usually hover around 12/13 but still occasionally jump to the high 40's. At that point I'm on Acetazolamide for 4/5 days of hell but the numbers do come back down to normal.Just have to remind myself that's not 1940 as I would be blind.
    I find your vid's very informative and I'm waiting for the day you announce a breakthrough.

    Top of line, without preservatives eye drops were initially used to treat the dry eye symptoms your describe. I had to eventually switch to Restasis as the otc drops caused continued dry eye pain. Restasis produces acceptable results. Btw my eyes were drier and not very red.

    I suffer from chronic dry eye caused by Sjogren's syndrome and use Restasis as my main medication. But I also use preservative free eyedrops as many as 10-20 times a day depending upon symptoms. Before settling upon Thera Tears preservative frre drops I tried 8 other big name preservative drops and they all irritated my eyes. Even the very expensive Oasis eyedrops recommended by my ophthalmologist were very irritating. So my guess is it pays to try a variety of differeent drops if the first ones you use don't work well.

    Thank you for all these wonderful videos. I’ve learned a lot and my dry eye problems are significantly reduced thanks to you. A recent reaction to Pataday allergy reduction eye drops (from one of your great videos) caused my eye lids to swell and even my eyeballs felt swollen. I immediately rinsed with Retaine MGD drops (another of your videos) which decreased the reaction.
    I’m very careful with the Pataday drops, only one drop in each eye and use the lower lid pull out method to administer the drop. No other eye drops were used before the Pataday. Occasional use over the last 6 months with no problems until now. This is the original bottle. I’d appreciate any suggestions on preventing this from happening again.

    Is the rebound effect permanent after long-term overuse of whitening eye drops?

  • @WJSpies
    @WJSpies 2 года назад +5

    Yes.. I used Rx eye drops for glacoma for years, then surgery for cataracts with shunts put into eyes for glacoma. No more drops required but then dry eye set in. Doc gave me Refresh LiquiGel to resolve dry eye.
    Worked okay kinda sorts but after putting drops in my eyes they felt strange for a few hours. Relief seemed iffy at best. She then prescribed an ointment that worked but blurred vision for a while, depending on variables unknown to me.
    After trial & error I figured out I needed both drops & ointment combined - one to augment the other.
    Drops worked but only if oil based ointment allowed them to remain in the eye longer.
    Why can't my doc explain this? She's a highly respected eye surgeon, but I don't think she likes having to repeat the same old song and dance to every patient funneling into her care.
    She's very intense but also very detached. I suspect behaviorally she can't help this. She has mellowed some, after taking time off to have a baby.
    I'm verging on asking for one of her other associate docs to work with. If a major problem comes up they can always fall back on her as a backup.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for bringing this up. Ointment does work wonders for some people.
      I know many amazing surgeons and they are very good at what they do. In my experience, and this is for sure a generality and there are always exceptions, but many surgeons are brilliantly skilled but often fall short with communication to their patients. In addition, and for sure in ophthalmology, there is a shortage of ophthalmologists for the demand, which means they are often overworked or have very little time to spend with each patient (which is a frustrating shame). Either way, I hope you are able to spend a little more time with a local provider to help you with your case.
      I appreciate your comment, Thanks.

    I went to an eye doctor last year because I was studying for my boards and my eyes are dry. The doctor prescribed 2 brands of eye drops one is Systane (which says preservative free) and the other one is Refresh. So,, of course, I bought systane and as time goes by both of my eyes became puffy (lower of my eyebrows) and my upper left eyelid is a little bit retracted. So I stopped Systane because aside from the problems I've encountered mentioned above I had photosensitivity and blurry eyes. Now, my eyes are looking better but I still have a little retracted eyelid on the left and a little puffy eyes on both eyes.

    I found a spray that sprays over a closed eye.
    Then u blink and it goes into the eye, no rubbing or touching eye.
    It had the effect of moisture, not at all cooling or refreshing, just moisture, like normalizing the eye, any dryness just became normal.
    I didn’t even use eye drops that much because all those chemicals can’t be good, so I really liked the gentle spray over a closed eye.
    I began to use it every morning, sometimes thru-out the day, no side effects at all.
    It was a teeny tiny bottle, went thru it fast, sought out some more, can’t find it any more :-/

      If you had flashing in the eyes before the floaters increased, you should go to your eye doctor ASAP. Tell them when you make the appointment so they know. The viscous part of the eye pulls away from the retina, this can cause detached retina so it should be checked ASAP.

    Would you recommend using preservative-free eyedrops as a general maintenance/ preventative measure? For example, if someone has dry eyes generally but doesn't need eyedrops that day, could they benefit from using eye drops to make sure their eyes stay moist? Do preservative-free eyedrops cause any harm to the eye, or are they 100% good?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +2

      I believe they can play a role for maintenance, in that dry eye is all about homeostasis. For many people, even if they are not symptomatic, the salt or osmolarity may be thrown off and that can lead to a cascade of dryness. For people who frequently experience dryness, I often recommend at least twice a day dosing. But you may want to ask your eye care provider about how severe your condition is and if they recommend it.
