    I've had this camera for some time, and have gotten some really great pics with it. It's low light performance isn't great, to be charitable. I'm looking to upgrade to a mirrorless sometime this year or next.

    Excellent overview of the D5000, thanks M8 , horse portraits were very pleasing, for 'pin sharp'..I own this camera, I just focus manually, stop down to F5.6 - F11 with kit lenses and results are very sharp. I don't trust the AF at all. Very solid camera and the sensor produces wonderful images once you master the quirks and idiosyncrasies of this model.

    I bought a second-hand D5000 body in November 2021 for 99 euros in the Netherlands. I wanted to use it for my telescopes, photographing deep-sky objects. The liveview screen was exactly what I needed to support focusing through a telescope, replacing my Pentax *ist DL2, which is still fine, but lacking the monitor, it was a hassle for astrophotography.
    Later on, I bought a second-hand 24-120 mm zoomlens for this camera, so that I can also use it for terrestrial imaging.
    The software menus are not as tedious as it may seem at first. They are structured quite well. I needed to familiarise myself with them anyway, once I started to prepare the camera for my telescopes, imaging M31 Andromedae, for instance. Of course, I then only use RAW images.
    This is a really nice DSLR for hobbyists that do not want to spend a lot of money on a more recent camera. The D5000 offers all that I need, on a reasonable sensor resolution. I bought two more batteries and a USB-charger, so now I have everything for a day's "work".
    I am quite happy with this choice. Why would I spend much more on a new camera that only professionals demand as part of their job?

    • @MyPhotoJourney
      @MyPhotoJourney  Год назад +1

      You have a very nice setup and I am really impressed that you use this for astro photography, well done and a massive thanks for watching and your amazing comment 👍👍

    • @Guido_XL
      @Guido_XL Год назад

      @@MyPhotoJourneyWell, thank you very much for this reply. It is not unusual though to use a DSLR for astrophotography.
      We amateurs use mainly two types of cameras for astrophotography: DSLRs and astro-cameras, which are divided into colour- and B/W types. The B/W option may seem strange at first for anyone that is not familiar with astro-photography, but it makes a lot of sense. Having a colour-sensor degrades the pixel-resolution because of the necessary debayering (demosaicing) process after an exposure.
      A true B/W sensor is simply producing grey images. The colour content is imposed by the applied filter, allowing for only a part of the available bandwidth, which is quite typical for astro-photography. With Photoshop or more dedicated software, the artificial colours red, green and blue are added as separate layers to the composition. This means that such rendered images are not genuinely depicting what the human eye would have perceived, but that is a difficult endeavour anyway, as much light from deep-sky objects tends to be infra-red or ultra-violet, which would seem quite dull to the human retina.
      Anyway, the use of a DSLR is rather obvious to an amateur-astronomer, although we tend to use dedicated cameras instead, which are more specialised in producing the astro-images that we pursue. They contain rather small pixels, in case we target planets, because planets appear as quite small projections on the sensor. Some deep-sky objects, like M31 Andromedae, are quite large in the night's sky, so that we tend to use larger sensors with larger pixels.
      DSLRs are an average choice, when we target deep-sky objects in a one-shot-colour process and do not have a (rather expensive) dedicated camera at our disposal.

But i dont know how much was is it used (i asked the seller but he said he said he didnt use much), so how can i know if its worth the price and wasnt used much based on picture quality, also if the shutter is in good condition and no need to replace? Also in your video you mentioned about other DSLRs around same price, please can you let me know which can i should consider as other options? You can consider me as a complete newbie who needs to know the minimal basic of DSLRs. Thankyou.
    Waiting for your reply.

    • @MyPhotoJourney

      Thanks for watching and for your comment. For the price that camera would be OK, and especially if it has a lens too. You could ask for a copy of an exif file from a recent photo which would give you the shutter count, though at the age the camera is you would expect it to have been well used. Also there are other more modern Nikon cameras though the better the camera the more expensive it is likely to be and you have to think about your budget. 👍

    • @MyPhotoJourney
      @MyPhotoJourney  Год назад +1

      Hi, I'm not sure why your photos are appearing blurred and in truth there could be lots of reasons. As for a lens I would suggest a 35mm prime lens which is a good all-round lens for most photography and for your beauty photos a 50mm lens would be a nice fit, which is a short portrait lens for this camera.
      Depending on your budget you can get a 50mm lens from MPB, £150
      www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/nikon-af-s-nikkor-50mm-f-1-4g
      I also did a video comparing a 50mm lens with the kit lens ruclips.net/video/mH53dT2SzmI/видео.html

    Well, if all else fails, instead of manual exposure, try Aperture priority. "A" on the dial. All 3xxx & 5xxx Nikons have a single front command dial., which in "A" sets the aperture. So, if you want depth of field, you spin the command dial to stop down the lens until you hit a shutter speed you can still live with.. Those older 18 to 55 mm kit lenses are rubbish. A great lens from the same era is the 18 to 70 mm f3.5 to f4.5 Nikkor. These are tack sharp, and dirt cheap nowadays, since they don't have "image stabilization". Apparently, "these kidz today", can't live without it.
    FWIW, the Nikon D3200 has a 24 Mp sensor. There's no flippy screen, but they're pretty cheap, coming in at around 160 USD, Pounds, or Euros, whichever of the 3 you have handy. Those 12.3 Mp sensors make decent lenses look mediocre though. Especially with ultra wide lenses BTW, I'm pretty sure the flash will only pop up in full Auto in low light.

      Indeed, those Nikkor telelenses are great for something like a D5000. We once had a visit from an owl-club in our town, demonstrating their owls and how they fly. I managed to take some amazing pictures then, just focusing manually and leaving the exposure-time to the camera's discretion. You could discern every hair in the feathers, although I was standing at perhaps 10 meters distance. And that all for a small amount of money, the equipment is second-hand. Still, it looks almost as new. People tend to treat camera-equipment with care.
