Using two dulcimer really enhances the song. I don’t think anyone heard of a dulcimer until The Rolling Stones came out with this beautiful song. Thank you Brian Jones!
John DeAngelo: I wonder if dulcimer sales skyrocketed after the Stones released this in '66. You are spot on, NOBODY had ever heard of a dulcimer, save for those people that lived in Appalachia.
I even tried to build a mountain dulcimer before I knew the Rolling Stones had used one! But then I'm very much into mountain music (at least I was then!).
I'm back again. Still the best version of this song I ever heard. I better download it before it disappears from RUclips. It has a centuries old feel. Hey Duncan! I'm still enjoying this years later!
I love the original version, but this is every bit as beautiful or more so. The original version is guitar and dulcimer. On this version, both parts are played on dulcimer. Exquisite!
Long ago and far away heard Lady Jane for first time. Had a lot a meaning for many us. The way Mick Jagger Sang it. Song still plays in moments like those
WOW!! Totally Awesome!! I totally agree with Alex, on singing it better than Mick, and somewhere, Brian Jones is smiling down on you both!! RIP Brian Jones
I would have to agree with you. Jagger has such a distinctive style and persona. I only sing on these videos as I think instrumental versions of songs are pointless.
@@michaelmelling9333 Depends what your comparing to - the original grates on me because of Jaggers voice and until this the best version I have heard is by Trini Lopez (for vocals, maybe not the arrangement which is good but misses the medieval feel) - I would LOVE for the Stones to remix it again now because unlike some artists Jagger's voice is SOOOO much better now than back then; it really has aged well like a fine wine vintage :-) This version could improve if you add saturation to the voice to carry it over the backing; the voice is set too far back in the mix :-) Great version though!
I keep coming back to listen. Every so often I need a dose of this. No one does it like you Duncan. I think this song was made for your voice. It is really moving. Way better than the Stones. God bless Duncan Gibbs.
Best version of this song in the world, no room for debate. Simple but genius, your voice is perfect for this song. Beautiful. Mick Jagger, eat your heart out! Move over, Duncan is taking over!
The song deserves to be played more. On Brian's part, the bass and top string are an octave apart, so the same frets are used. The middle string is open, but can be annoying if it rings too much.
I have always loved this song, since it was released. I must've been maybe 7. I had an older brother who got the music bug after The Beatles played Ed Sullivan (I remember that, though I was less than 4). He became a musician, I followed in his footsteps, with the best music of the century as my childhood soundtrack. Again, thanks for posting, you did an excellent job! :-)
Can’t believe it - I’ve been searching for LADY JANE on Dulcimer, and you’ve made my wish come true. It was beautiful. That the Rolling Stones could produce something which I think even Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach or Handel would have been proud of says a lot for their writing skills and inventiveness, and worthy of a special mention - Brian Jones’s contribution on Dulcimer! I’m sure Henry VIII would have loved it too!
I only regret that the video didn't focus more on the actual Brian Jones part, (Duncn with the HAT), but instead on the Kieth Richards guitar part (on a dulcimer)!
The Stones dropped the ball with this one. THEY should have used 2 dulcimers back in 1966, when they recorded this song. I almost like this version better than the guitar/dulcimer combo on the Stones record. Who cares, though, ?? Now, I know 3 beautiful renditions of this song: 1.The original 2. Rotary Connection 3. This one, in the video above these comments. Great job, Duncan Gibbs !!
Awesome. I’m trying to figure out the part played by the gentleman in the hat, the Brian Jones part, as played on the official release. Is it DAD tuning? By chance, is there a video or tablature of his part?
Yes, that part is in DAD, the bass and melody frets are the same (middle open, or in my case dampened). There are no half frets (so 6 and 13). The highest note is 14.
Ok, I’ve figured out all the parts for the Brian Jones part. But, does the middle A string drone the entire time, or is it muted during chorus sections?
I think the middle string is always ringing, but that sounds too much for me. I mute it with my LH little finger just resting on the string, like a V-shaped chord but with no pressure.
Thank you. I have tabbed this as a duet, the melody part isn't difficult once you've worked out where your 14th fret is! Where is a good place to post tab?
Depends where you are. In the UK entry level is about £150-£200 (anything less is probably not playable) rising to £1k for top level. If possible, I would try it out before buying.
Are you gentlemen from UK? I think you sing it much better than Jagger! Very beautiful version. Well done! Bravissimi. You transported me out of reality for a few beautiful minutes. Thank you.
+Duncan Gibbs How did you tune the Dulcimer for this song? I also saw your Born to be Wild. Great version! Bravo! I found this vid because yesterday I bought a Cripple Creek Appalachian dulcimer similar to yours at a yard sale near me on Long Island NY. ( $15 dollars, cheap! ) I was looking for tuning information and stumbled upon your video. I really enjoyed your music. Thank you
+Alex Henderson Both dulcimers are tuned DAd, ie D on the lowest string, A on the middle and d an octave higher on the string nearest the player. This seems to be the most common tuning these days, although I prefer DAA (the middle string and the string nearest you are the same) which was the more common tuning in the 70's. There are other tunings to enable minor keys, Born to be Wild uses DAG (the nearest string is lower than the middle). There are plenty of tutorial videos on the net, or you join an on-line society such as fotmd.com (friends of the mountain dulcimer).
I'm playing in the same key as the Stones (D) and Brian Jones appears to be playing octaves on his dulcimer, which would make it DAD, starting at fret 11. His lowest note is 6 and his highest 14.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me Lady Anne got jilted in favor of Lady Jane (because her station was right) and Marie (a servant) had to understand that since Jane was her lady, they could still have liaisons but would never marry.
I am glad you finally upgraded the original. I must confess that since I discovered the dulcimer and the hommel, I considered the dulcimer's passage in this song by Brian Jones rather poorly. ( butcher me for it, dear Rolling Stones fans, but not every song by a great rock band can satisfy everyone and no band is perfect). Your version restored the dulcimers' role in the song to its proper tone possibilities IMHO, especiall now you use two and a little more reverb where it fits the melody. Hope the surviving Stones comply with me, if not: life goes on.
Despite modern technology, I have found that recording a convincing sound from even the best dulcimers (other peoples!) is extremely difficult. They don't project sound in the same way as say a guitar.
@@duncangibbs20 very true. And I think that since the sixties, recording technology has improved strongly as for acoustic instruments. With a simple DAW on my laptop, I can now record things that took some recording studios to hire for a few days in the past.

Thank Brian Jones for that one, too.
Don't kid yourself. I think most people had heard of a dulcimer before the Stones used one.

Too bad Brian had to drink to handle life. He was a beautiful creative and intelligent man. I only wish he could see it.
You nailed Duncan !....One of the best covers I've heard. Really enjoyed it.....
Very Nice!
Inspired playing proof of Brian Jones genius. Made me miss his

Thank you. Dulcimers can be a little lacking in the bass and in volume, getting the right balance (2 dulcimers or 1 with a guitar) is always tricky.

Do you have Lady Jane tabbed for two dulcimers? I love this version.
I do. Not sure how to get it to you (unless it's programming a synth, technology is not my strong suit).
I’m working on a paper version using tabledit. Your video has been so helpful. Thank you!
