Best version EVER!! NOT for pure technical perfection - it's got plenty of buzzy, half-fretted or muted notes - but in this case, they don't detract - rather, they ADD to the authenticity, the realness, the rip-your-guts-out-and-make-you-bawl-cryin' bluesy feeling of this masterpiece. He was not a big Stones fan but was mildly interested in seeing them. I forgot what they opened with but my friend didn't have much to say. Then they did Only Rock and Roll where Ronnie definitely caught a wave during his solo and was doing things I've never heard him do. After the song my friend said "now I get it." I told him that there's a reason why the Rolling Stones are called the greatest rock and roll band--because they ARE.

Nice job lads. Isn't it great that Brian introduced the blues to the band. Keith and Mick were rock n rollers (Chuck, Bo Diddley, etc) Brian was the blues (Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters)
The Stones are at their best when they play blues based songs. The blues shaped who they are, and it’s what makes them different from other bands such and the Beatles, The Who etc....
This is so sweet. In the context of a sixty year lifespan, it means everything. This is by nature a Blues band keeping something good and traditional REAL. And here we are. After 60 years. We all get old (hopefully). Only some of us get fat.
I actually prefer this version better than the let it bleed album version there’s a lot of soul in this version god bless Keith the basher pure unadulterated Mick jagger on harmonica I love them all glad I had the pleasure of working with them Sunday June 10 2007 Isle of Wight festival also the last time I had a chat with Amy winehouse what a great soul

I admire Ronnie Wood so much, one hell of a nice man and I could say the same about every band member. Their music and particularly Love in vain truly brings joy to my heart. Big respect.
I remember everybody had the Beatles written all over their notebooks in middle school but me and one other guy were Stone fans as soon as we heard their first song, Never looked back. The Greatest Band of all Time.72 years old and still think so
I have to FACE THE FACT - I can't play like this! So now I know what I have to do - figure it out and then PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. See ya later folks!
You're right about practice -- but if you're referring to Keith's rhythm part, it's fairly easy. The original studio version Keith uses a capo (3rd fret)
That's part of the greatness of the Rolling Stones. Sure, they had their hits but there's also their deep roots in the blues, folk and country. Their actual studio version of this song has been critically touted as one of the best versions of a Robert Johnson song.
Amazing song and great rendition, but I think their Texas Roadhouse version in ‘72 is absolutely perfect. Still, the Stones do an awesome job covering this gem.
Eran???'
My favorite version of Robert Johnson's great song. Very powerful emotionally, Mick lives it, great guitar work by Keith, also very nicely complemented by Ron Wood on the steel guitar.
While it is fairly close to the original version, the Stones added more of a country edge to ‘Love in Vain’. They changed the arrangement quite a lot from Robert Johnson’s. They put in extra chords that aren’t there on the Robert Johnson version. Made it more country. And that’s another strange song because it’s very poignant.
Why nobody remembers the versión of this song in "Let it bleed" from 1969, and even better, the live version in the bootleg on the tour that followed the LP. Remember who played the slide guitar? ¡Mick Taylor!!
@George Horner Oh fuck off. So sick of the Mick Taylor BS fanboys. Taylor is a virtuoso guitar God, no doubt. Ronnie is better for the Stones. Mick Taylor was a glittery guitar player, but he made no substantial musical contribution other than his wonderful stage solos. He added very little in terms of actual songwriting. (And I love the songs he did contribute to, but Ronnie has had far more influence there -- It's Only Rock and Roll being the biggest...he wrote that with Mick J before he was even a Stone!)
@George Horner If you're referring to the Let it Bleed version of Love in Vain, it's Keith playing all guitars. Mick Taylor didn't play on it. Country Honk and Live With Me are the only songs he played on. Let it Bleed is all Keith
