Excellent observation ...and absolutly true. He and his peers didn't have RUclips, the internet with tab/sites, or chromatic tuners. He really does love the blues and Black music from the American South, a true music lover who can divorce the people from the music, thus he has no interest in Black immigrants to England. Hats off to the man for pursing music for music.

Willie Mae in the song refers to one of Johnson's many girlfriends at the time. Willie Mae Powell was Honeyboy's Edwards's cousin and he met Johnson while the two of them were dating.!
2:43 Willie Mae was Robert Johnson's girlfriend in Mississippi. He tried to get her to go to Texas with him for the recording sessions. She refused, and he told her he was going to put her in a song.
Thanks for that explanation, I was wondering why he sang "WiIlie Mae". She must have meant a lot to him, if she made into the lyrics... apparently Johnson was a real womaniser...

A great rendition. He's great! Clapton is the only one who can cover Johnson and sound as great as the Devil. I play it too but never will sound like this...
You young guys need to broaden your historical musical knowledge..... The photo in the background behind Clapton is there on purpose, it's Robert Johnson the guy who wrote Love in Vain. Clapton is playing the original and true version of the song to honour Johnson. Everyone thinks Jagger/Richards wrote the song. Richards rearranged the song and plays it differently and I also like the Stones version. But playing it Johnson's way is pretty hard because it's bass, rhythm and fills all at once.
Check out Gordon Smith guys if you want to hear more R. Johnson also Lonnie Johnson songs, Gordon has the voice plus superb guitar playing, real authentic blues, Clapton's good but Gordon, though relatively unknown, is something else, I think even Clapton would agree!
And dear Eric I could not love you more, I have never considered myself a "die hard fan" of anyone, I have artist who deliver a song, a message lyrics and instruments that speak to me it is as changing and fluid, for me now as way back then. That said I have come to adore and recognize talent of all genre all exceptional and all relative, one borrowing, collaborating with another until somehow a new twist, style, genre is created, Never forgetting that each of you have been inspired by all if these as well different times stages ages and tweeking your own profession. All of you masters at this, while somewhere along the way my hope never faded that one day one fine day one of you would rise and give authenticity to the very mentors you each have been inspired by and played along side. I admit there were times as you each rose up the rungs of life's ladder I wished that would be the time to give moral, spiritual, and honorable credence to those that enabled the first 2nd 3rd rung to the top rung of the ladder. I applaud you today after reading this article making it clear that for what ever the reasons, growth, lack of growth, ego, held you and many back from authenticating the honor many deserved and who no doubt went on to continue to play and perform with all the passion and deep rooted masters they were inspired by. They never made it to the top, but they know without them your time hard work and gifted talent willing and striving to be as good or better than they. We all know what held them back. Our history is steeped with humble men and women who well know the truth and well understand their style music and song would not have made the charts had their students not worked hard had the passion and pursued the dream Honorable, HHONORABLE ERIC CLAPTON. That's how I learned it, long before the days of YT. I don't have it all down pat and clean like Eric of course but I have a respectable version, all learned from the vinyl album I still possess.
In his documentary of Robert Johnson, John Hammond actually found Willa May, Robert's old flame, and played her the recording of this song. She'd never heard it, and never knew Robert had written it. It's a powerful moment, man.
It may seem strange as stated below but I believe you can be stinking rich and still play blues first and foremost because you love the genre and then pull on all the things in life that you have regretted or was down about and channel that through expression both vocally/instrumentally..if you have been lucky enough to have no regrets you can't play the blues..authentically at least!.

"finding the notes of Robert Johnson" is something advanced guitarists do for themselves. Some few can do that, even fewer (sorry King James) can find the vocalizations at the same time. EC has never needed RJ songs to fill stadiums, so I don't get the criticisms? The problem is the same Robert probably experienced, people get mad at talent when it comes from someone of a different color.
THe Blues is what brought Clapton to the table in the first place, thru the years He played it as he felt it, He is in the past 10 or 15 yrs getting deep into what they really are. He is a great Picker. BB King calls Clapton the Best in the world today.. I agree.

And the red light was my mind
All my love was in vain
All my love's in vain
Clapton's guitar playing yet AGAIN stuns me. Also, i finally found a video to convince my friend that Clapton CAN have 2,000 likes but NO DISLIKES.
Beautifully played what an inspiration this man is
An absolute masterpiece. Clapton is such a gifted man.
The genius of simplicity, or the simplicity of genius ❤️☯️🙏 Double genius, actually, Johnson and Clapton.

I think Eric's genius is vocals. There are plenty competent blues guitarists, but few who can sing
blues and rock so sweetly.
L'aspro e sconsolato blues di Robert Johnson e la dolcezza malinconica della interpretazione di Slowhand

Simply, not simple! Play the guitar is not simple anyway! I just want to say that here, for that tune , God Clapton plays with no flaunting, no exubherance, no bluffing like any other guitarist of his rank would! That is impressive! That is the real class, I think!
Watching that right hand, who does he remind you of most? For me it is Lightnin' Hopkins.
E.C. has a really interesting right hand finger picking technique indeed..Hopkins was more greasy but I see what you're saying
DOES DOSENT IT? The Best Learn from the Best...
I was thinking that too
Eric Clapton has played this song faithfully to the original from a lifetime's study of Robert Johnson and the blues.
The Rolling Stones made a great interpretation of this song on their Get Your Ya-Yas Out album with some great slide guitar by Mick Taylor.
I gotta check that out. Thanks for the info!!
Actually, it's on the Let It Bleed album. And another, better version on the Stripped album.
@@grahamcalderwood113 well, no Mick Taylor on that version, but rather, Ry Cooder on mandolin. Ya Yas is my favorite.
This is some really fucking good guitar playing. Like the difficulty of this is insane.
Eric Clapton is the most important blues man who ever lived. He took the blues out of America to England and sent it back again, then the americans woke up, and understand what they had in there own land since late 1920's..
Beautiful sound Beautiful guitar
Exellent.it is from the Clapton Cd and Dvd Sessions for Robert Johnson a must have🎙🎸🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🎵👌
Amazing, splendid guitar....and, guitarist....
Eric Clapton is simply one of the best
Eric you are the real deal! Love that smoothe vocal too!!!!!
Well I followed her to the station
With a suitcase in my hand
Yeah, I followed her to the station
With a suitcase in my hand
Whoa, it's hard to tell, it's hard to tell
When all your love's in vain
[Verse 2]
When the train rolled up to the station
I looked her in the eye
Well the train rolled up to the station
And I looked her in the eye
Whoa, I felt so sad so lonesome
That I could not help but cry
[Verse 3]
When the train left the station
It had two lights on behind
Yeah, when the train left the station
It had two lights on behind
Whoa, the blue light was my baby
And the red light was my mind
[Outro]
All my love was in vain
All my love's in vain

IMHO, Sessions for Robert
Johnson, is so far the best
live studio recording
ever been shared by
the artist himself, EC.
Most of the songs in the DVD
are complete.
All artists should
at least have this kind
of project sessions and
share it with us.
Thanks EC and the band.
Willie Mae in the song refers to one of Johnson's many girlfriends at the time. Willie Mae Powell was Honeyboy's Edwards's cousin and he met Johnson while the two of them were dating.!
The only way you can live forever is if people still play your music after your dead. Thanks for keepin the Blues alive Mr. Clapton!
That makes no sense.
Can't say I've ever seen a white Martin. Pretty sweet.
If Clappers wants a white Martin, he gets a white Martin
It's the Martin 000 Bellezza Bianca.
The Bellezza Nera is black.
Around 400 of each made.
There's a used Bellezza Nera on eBay in the UK for 8K.
Always a pleasure to hear your music mr Clapton!! Keep on rockin'!
I thought he said Willie Mays
I have this album on vinyl. Amazing how many people have performed this song the Stones Rod Stewart, and Arosmith.

Beautiful as always. Nobody plays like him
A great rendition. He's great! Clapton is the only one who can cover Johnson and sound as great as the Devil. I play it too but never will sound like this...
its a heatwave up here on Vancouver Island Canada in May....this transforms me to the Delta or down by the Riverside.
Eric recorded this song in the same room as Robert Johnson, in Dallas, Texas.
its surprising it was recorded in dallas, and not somewhere like in missipi or nashville
Mark Muller calm down mate, I think anyone watching this will know that
yeah mark, stop being a bitch
THIS IS PROFOUND BEYOND TRIBUTE STATUS HONORABLE MEN DO WHAT YOU HAVE THIS IS A MOST BEAUTUFL TIME AND LONG OVERDUE AS YOU SAID . MY BEST TO YOU AND YOURS
Well, I followed her to the station

Lord, I followed her to the station
With a suitcase in my hand
Well, it's hard to tell, it's hard to tell
When all your love's in vain
All my love is in vain
When the train pulled up to the station
And I looked her in her eye
When the train pulled up to the station

And I could not help but cry

The red light was my mind

Ooh, ooh, Willie Mae
All my love is in vain
Thanks 🍻
👍
I can imagine how many guitar players are sitting in front of this vidio with there guitar in there arms learning ,picking something up from From Eric,, I know I am... When he learned this stuff it was from listening to the record or tape and figuring shit out on his own ...we are spoiled ...Thats ok.. sure is Fun ...Thank you Eric Clapton for reminding me I was playing it right and to rock that thumb ...
That's how I learned it, long before the days of YT. I don't have it all down pat and clean like Eric of course but I have a respectable version, all learned from the vinyl album I still possess.
I love it
I love the series of his acoustics performances ! So great .
hah, i love how he says "are we done? music?" and then just starts jamming randomly :D
Listening to Clapton (who is a guitar genius), makes me respect Keith Richard’s playing and Jagger’s vocals even more.
"are we done? with music?"
"yeah."
*plays again*
I have respected Clapton for so long.. but this video gave a more vibrant meaning to the word respect.
ERIC slowhand, long life to tou
ciao from italy
In his documentary of Robert Johnson, John Hammond actually found Willa May, Robert's old flame, and played her the recording of this song. She'd never heard it, and never knew Robert had written it. It's a powerful moment, man.
I like this version because it captures the soul of the original ... Simplicity and feeling. Better than stones version
i like too, cuz this
What a beautiful guitar!
Bien sure que je regrette. Je souffre. I miss you,.
the most respected and faithful representation by the person who has the credibility and skill to play it. fools.
HAppy birthday mr Clapton.
Ill smack anyone who says other wise. Dont worry I got your back
isso sim é musica não o lixo do funk que toca no BRASIL

I agree.
Who is this guy? Looks like the architect down the street.
woaww!! that melancholic voice,great !
If Robert Johnson ever had a white brother, it was this man.
