My name's Fran Raya and I'm a female singer/songwriter from the UK. I was invited to support Eric Clapton on his Scandinavian tour performing my own songs. It was one of the most memorable times in my career. He is a great performer with a true musician's soul. I am so proud to have toured with him.

    Excellent observation ...and absolutly true.
He and his peers didn't have RUclips, the internet with tab/sites, or chromatic tuners. I heard him say that one of them would have a record and loan it out and they'd just listen over and over to it to figure a piece out, how to play it.
This was post WWII England, times were tough and they loved American Music. And as an American I am grateful to guys like Clapton for keeping this material alive and with us today.

No disrespect intended but you’re overthinking it. Clapton played and sang the song in his own way as he tried out this guitar. He didn’t intentionally send a subliminal message in deference to Johnson and wasn’t trying to be anything other than Clapton singing his modern day version of an old RJ tune. Nothing more, nothing less.

@Kyle Balmer The meanest comments always come from people with no subscribers, no comment, and nothing worthwhile to offer anybody online or off. I'm trying to think back over Clapton's near-60-year career of interesting hits & misses to the very worst moment he's ever given us. Maybe it's the utterly forgettable, weak vocals on the insipid "Next Time You See Her" off of Slowhand. That's probably my pick for the worst thing Clapton has given us musically. And it's still better music than this condescending little edgelord has ever given anyone.

Thank You Dear Eric for this masterpiece from timeless Robert Johnson ! Eric is bringing Robert`s music here to our time and space, very close to perfection so we could enjoy it ! I feel spirit of Johnson comes alive in this cover of mr Eric and dances all around ! But most impressive, more than his voice, is this beautiful guitar style. ERic makes it look easy as butter but to play melody, rhythm and bass lines at the same time and all that effortlessly and not only that, its also played and sang with feelings, so with like that we can get glimpses how big master Robert Johnson truly was, plus Eric is playin it with comfortable soft Martin and Robert probably played some cheap guitar with rusty strings covered with his sweat result of non stop playing and his guitar had probably high action strings so it was all more hard to play with, but Johnson played it totally effortlessly, so his place as one of best guitar players ever is clear !

@@foxsotired3038 IIUC, Alexis Korner was actually the one primarily responsible for introducing American Blues music into the London, UK music scene, though as a pretty much fringe interest at first. Amongst others, two young men called Brian Jones and Mick Jagger liked what they heard and were joined by Keith, Bill and Charlie to form what was originally purely a Blues covers band but went on to bring the Blues and the pop and rock music derived from it to the ears and hearts of millions.
Prior to that it's my understanding that in the US, the Blues style of music was mainly a family-and-friends affair only, or once it was recorded, came under the niche classification of 'race' music, which by and large, the white kids didn't listen to. It didn't really become mainstream or profitable until the so called British Invasion brought it to the attention of of the masses, in a repackaged (but respectful) form.
Some of the original Blues artists then went on to have successful tours of the UK and Europe, where they were rightfully honoured as the masters and originators - the real deal - of what was by now standard top twenty popular music, on both sides of the Atlantic, and around the world.

That I could not help but cry
    [Verse 3]
When the train left the station
It had two lights on behind
Yeah, when the train left the station
It had two lights on behind
Whoa, the blue light was my baby
And the red light was my mind
    [Outro]
All my love was in vain
    All my love's in vain

    IMHO, Sessions for Robert
Johnson, is so far the best
    live studio recording
    ever been shared by
    the artist himself, EC.
Most of the songs in the DVD
    are complete.
    All artists should
    at least have this kind
    of project sessions and
    share it with us.
    Thanks EC and the band.

Willie Mae in the song refers to one of Johnson's many girlfriends at the time. Willie Mae Powell was Honeyboy's Edwards's cousin and he met Johnson while the two of them were dating.!

2:43 Willie Mae was Robert Johnson's girlfriend in Mississippi. He tried to get her to go to Texas with him for the recording sessions. She refused, and he told her he was going to put her in a song.

You young guys need to broaden your historical musical knowledge..... The photo in the background behind Clapton is there on purpose, it's Robert Johnson the guy who wrote Love in Vain. Clapton is playing the original and true version of the song to honour Johnson. Everyone thinks Jagger/Richards wrote the song. Richards rearranged the song and plays it differently and I also like the Stones version. But playing it Johnson's way is pretty hard because it's bass, rhythm and fills all at once.

And dear Eric I could not love you more, I have never considered myself a "die hard fan" of anyone, I have artist who deliver a song, a message lyrics and instruments that speak to me it is as changing and fluid, for me now as way back then. That said I have come to adore and recognize talent of all genre all exceptional and all relative, one borrowing, collaborating with another until somehow a new twist, style, genre is created, Never forgetting that each of you have been inspired by all if these as well different times stages ages and tweeking your own profession. All of you masters at this, while somewhere along the way my hope never faded that one day one fine day one of you would rise and give authenticity to the very mentors you each have been inspired by and played along side. I admit there were times as you each rose up the rungs of life's ladder I wished that would be the time to give moral, spiritual, and honorable credence to those that enabled the first 2nd 3rd rung to the top rung of the ladder. I applaud you today after reading this article making it clear that for what ever the reasons, growth, lack of growth, ego, held you and many back from authenticating the honor many deserved and who no doubt went on to continue to play and perform with all the passion and deep rooted masters they were inspired by. They never made it to the top, but they know without them your time hard work and gifted talent willing and striving to be as good or better than they. We all know what held them back. Our history is steeped with humble men and women who well know the truth and well understand their style music and song would not have made the charts had their students not worked hard had the passion and pursued the dream Honorable, HHONORABLE ERIC CLAPTON. THIS IS PROFOUND BEYOND TRIBUTE STATUS HONORABLE MEN DO WHAT YOU HAVE THIS IS A MOST BEAUTUFL TIME AND LONG OVERDUE AS YOU SAID . MY BEST TO YOU AND YOURS

It may seem strange as stated below but I believe you can be stinking rich and still play blues first and foremost because you love the genre and then pull on all the things in life that you have regretted or was down about and channel that through expression both vocally/instrumentally..if you have been lucky enough to have no regrets you can't play the blues..authentically at least!.

"finding the notes of Robert Johnson" is something advanced guitarists do for themselves. Some few can do that, even fewer (sorry King James) can find the vocalizations at the same time. EC has never needed RJ songs to fill stadiums, so I don't get the criticisms? The problem is the same Robert probably experienced, people get mad at talent when it comes from someone of a different color.
