- If you've ever wondered what it would be like in a big storm on a Lighthouse out to sea, well.......
This video clip is from a sequence that I filmed during a storm whilst I was on the Wolf Rock Lighthouse which is approximately 8 miles South West of Lands End, Cornwall. I'm laying face down on top of the 41 metre, (134 feet) tall tower, in the safety net of the helicopter pad. I'm further out than I wanted to be and well past my comfort zone. In the latter part of this clip, all of the Tower below me vanishes under water, just the lens and the bit I'm on left above the water...enjoy.
i love to live there , trouble is i would still hear the wife shouting from the shore 17 miles away !!!
First lighthouse in the world to have a helipad fitted. :D Also for anyone that doesn't know, us cornish called it wolf rock because of how when the wind blows through the fissures in the rock. it sounds like a wolf howling. It's also a very rare type of volcanic rock, called phonolitic lava. This is a brilliant video, thank you. I've always wanted to see the lighthouse up close! I've painted it, photographed it, just sat and gazed at it lol.. but the one thing I've always wanted to do, was see it up close.. bottom half built out of good old Cornish granite, that stuffs pretty indestructible lol.. Though with that said I'd still rather look at it from afar than be there during one of our fierce storms.
Someone needs to write a shanty about you Lighthouse keepers, theyve taken your houses away, put computers in your place, left the sea to be technology, while these great old tenders remain, show ya films lad, show the films of times ye had lads, show the waves and breaker ways lad, and keep ya lights open to that sea, for sailors safety, always believe the dream lads, we've done our work for sure lads, those were the bloody days lad, a generation ago, protecting ships against the shore, what a way. Thanks a whole lot Pete, man you are great!
A book i read said this lighthouse shook in big storms? Thanks for these films - they are a great record. I love 'em!
Dear sir, Last night I was watching one of your videos and thought how the lighthouse keepers would manage in case of a storm accompanied by heavy rain. How far the waves would reach. This morning I found this video. You have all put your life at stake to serve your country and thousands of passenger and cargo ships, besides boats. You are great. Thank you again.
Peter, after watching that frightening bit of film all I can say is "you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din"!! Respect.
I feel sorry for those who had to build the lighthouse.
That second last wave finally got to the top window. I'll bet everyone's bed got wet.
Thanks so much for sharing this amazing footage. Certainly makes you appreciate the power of the sea. Take care.
Cup of coffee, cigarette and a cosy warm blanket. My soul needs this lighthouse right now.
Fantastic to see a storm viewed from the lighthouse, something i would have loved to witness myself, shame we can`t hear what it sounded like inside! i imagine the sound of the sea crashing against the structure was quite loud..
I served here on the Wolf from 1980 - 1983. My pencil sketches from the helipad nets and photos show the day marker on the left of the landing and dog steps on the right side of the tower? Whilst the video shows the dramatic effect of the seas around the Wolf the image seems to be reversed Peter.
I think about three seconds after that wave came just below the helipad, I’ve been inside again. You’re a brave soul to stay out there that much longer!
Wow!!! I certainly hope both you and your camera were firmly tethered! Terrifyingly mesmerizing. And that's from a video perspective. Thanks so much for directing me to this!
Unique, amazing video. Thank you for sharing!
Awesome video Peter this seems somewhat terrifying but a sense of relaxing calm feeling at the same time, I wish I could experience some of what you did in these remarkable videos but I also have no idea of how lonely it could be during your shifts at sea. Thanks and cheers to you!
Great peice of film peter. Love all your work.
Amazing film.
I can only imagine what it was like working and living in this lighthouse. These keepers have huge balls.
Amazing, so impressive 👍🙂
