A Lighthouse Keeper's guided tours Episode Forty. Hanois Lighthouse, Channel Islands
We are now visiting our last Lighthouse in the Channel Islands.
The Hanois Lighthouse is a Tower Rock, where the Keepers did 28 days at a time on duty.
This video is a compilation of 2 trips that I did to fill in for Keepers that were sick. They were filmed in 1990 & 1994.
As this was long before the likes of gopro cameras with brilliant wide angle footage, some of the footage was taken with a screw on lens. So a bit of a circular picture at times.
The Hanois is located about a mile off of the South West coast of Guernsey.

I'm surprised the freezer and fresh water were located on the bottom level. Wouldn't that pose a problem if you had sea water intrusion? (was that ever an issue?)

What can I say, my memory of the noises were that it just became background, we could even sleep throgh the fog horn. The only thing that I can liken it too would be traffic noise in a City etc, that becomes background too, or even driving your car, but yes in different areas on a Lighthouse, it was noisey.

I am from the island of Ushant, there are 5 lighthouses there (including the most powerful in Europe) and I have already seen many reports on them. I am really impressed by this lighthouse, which reminds me of the one at Longships, indicating the entrance to the English Channel, just like the one at Creac'h, on my island. You would think so but in reality it was the opposite. You were locked inside with 2 other men, not of your choice, and had to get on with them for 28 days at a time.

Hi, I seem to have a memory from somewhere, that Keepers way in the past brought them out to the Island.

Brilliant video! I always wanted to be a keeper. Inspired by a story I read in a boys magazine annual one Christmas! Ended up being a physics teacher!!

Thank you for your service, Peter, and for preserving this piece of history. I've recently discovered this series and am slowly getting through them. Would the grime on the lens affect the clarity/range of the light?

Thank you very much, much appreciated. In the minds of the Keepers that washed, dusted and polished these lenses from way back in History, and up until our redundancy days, yes indeed, but obviously not to our bosses that left them get into the grimey state that I've seen on some of the automatic lights. But then I'm very biased! Cheers and stay safe.

Great video, beautiful lense a master of craftsmanship of glass. Love the beauty of the clockwork mechanism. Such highly polished brass throughout.

Thank you very much, much appreciated. Yes that lens and clockwork were special. On the trinity house website they say that the lens was removed in 2017 and replaced with a 2 LED set up. No mention of where the lens went or the clockwork? Hope they are in a safe place. Cheers and stay safe.
