      Hi Jenny , about the stove ....,you said the fire doesnt last when u close the doors ,...of course not ,..the most lower door has to remain half open in order to help the smoke go out ..., then when the fire s gonne you have to close it to keep the heat! Try it and update it to me :) , kisses !

    Sauna in Swedish is "bastu". In case you haven't figured it out yet that sauna is your bathroom... If you don't have running water, the sauna is where you get cleaned up. You can heat up water inside the sauna and mix it with cold water to get the temperature you like and then you wash yourself in the sauna. That's how we did it in Sweden in the olden days.

    You mait already have got this tip for the logg fire. But when you start the fire it usually need a bit more air / ventalation to start of with becase the pressure in the pip is lower then in the stow. So keep the hatch half open for about 5-10 min . Until the fire have burned a good wile. Then you can close the top smal one, But be aware that the lower smal one the gridd need to be open to let the air in. only to be closed when you whant to put it out.

    Oh, my goodness, Jennifer!! You’re my hero!! I’ve been trying to see me in five years and I have nothing... due to our United States issues! If I could leave this instant I would!! Ireland, Scotland, Sweden or Norway - I adore them all! Please keep the videos coming and my heart is truly with you and your family! Wish I could be there to share a meal cooked on the wood stove! My childhood and early adult years were spent on my grandparents cattle ranch in Northern California where we lived such a wonderfully simple (if sometimes inconvenient) life! Good for you!! I’m definitely a fan of the lifestyle!!

    Hi Jennifer. Nice house you bought. A little unusual then with a small kitchen. The most common in old Swedish houses is that the kitchen is the largest room and so a small "chamber" as a bedroom. As you have probably seen, we do not normally have shutters, yes some have it as decoration.
    Hope you will enjoy yourself in Sweden and with us Swedes, we may be a little unavailable at first but then ...

    • @JenniferCarterWriter
      @JenniferCarterWriter  4 года назад +12

      Thanks Krister. The small kitchen maybe due to the fact it was possibly a soldatorp, but almost certainly the oldest house in the village. The neighbours have been really welcoming, so far!

      I first went to Sweden in 1973 we stayed in Kalma. My guys parents were beyond fabulous, a little shy and guarded at first. For Midsommer we went to their country house and Rolfs Daddy made me a wild flower crown and we took the record player into the garden and danced around until after midnight. Oh, yes! I would have bought that place in a heart beat! My great-grandparents came to the U.S. from Sweden, but I’ve never been there. When my retirement time rolled around, I moved to Mexico, and I absolutely love it here. But I keep thinking that I need to go visit Sweden. I’ve done lots of genealogy, so I know about zillions of ancestors, but I think I need to go there to get a feel for what their lives might have been like. (My other great-grandparents came from England and I spent a month traveling around there three years ago. It was wonderful to visit the towns where they lived and walk the streets they walked. Now it’s time to do the same in Sweden.) I just found your channel, and I look forward to following your adventures.

    Great movie, so glad you enjoy your cottage! Just wanted to say that those pine cones and bark in that basket are excellent fire starters. At least that's why we collect them and what we use them for. We use those for our woodstove and our fireplace in our cottage. And get the chimney sweeps in to fix that chimney - there's nothing like food cooked on a wood stove, I tell you! I don't know why but everything tastes sooo much better. I hope you'll be very happy in your new home. We actually moved permanently to ours as we loved staying there so much. :-)

      Yes, it is a really old stove! This house is the oldest in the village and it looks like the original stove

      Be sure and have the stove pipes/chimneys cleaned out on a yearly basis to prevent flue/chimney fires. That might be why the kitchen stove won't stay lit. Enjoy your treasure!

      Or you haven’t opened the chimney, there is usually a metal rod sticking out of the chimney that you need to push/pull called “spjäll”. It is to avoid cold air coming down the chimney when there is no fire going.

    well done gal ,it takes a certain type of person to break out into the unknown, been there and still there all positive ,so now your next challenge surely must be to drive to sweden at a nice relaxed pace ,i have made a few moves like you have and have loved every minute of it, and i always took a plane ,that was until i decided to drive for a nice change ,and it was the best decision ever ,living next to the black sea ,my drive to the UK takes 3 days ,but the journey is fantastic and a lot more enjoyable than flying,
    good luck cleaning the flue ,but i am sure if you ask a local they will come up with a answer for you,
    a top tip about putting wood in the fire to make them last longer in the evening ,is to stand your wood in a bowl of water for 10 minutes before retiring for the night and they will burn slowly during the night ,,all the best ,,

    You have probably already discovered that the pinecones make excellent kindling for starting a fire. You can even dip them in beeswax to make a fire starter, though isn't that the point of kindling? True, but the wax gives them super starting powers. 😁
    Great cottage, great channel and fantastic video! I shall follow along.
    Thanks!
