So, I'm 75 and this is my 59th season skiing. I keep thinking about trying snowboarding but have too much fun skiing. I stopped patrolling 3 years ago, but I was one of the youngest patrollers on my shift. One day four of us had some downtime and we figured out that between the four of us we had 244 years of skiing. One of the guys was a snowboarder (He went to the dark side three years earlier) and he was 79, so I guess you can keep on, keeping on (as long as you stay in shape - I still work out 3 or 4 times a week). So Tiffany, count on another 50+ years of snowboarding ahead of you!! Have fun sliding on the snow!!!!
Ill be 67 next month just did a week with my 18 year old son in Mammoth, been boarding since it started, lol. Work out 3 days a week. Will tell you step-on bindings are a life saver for us old guys who have a bit of blubber and don't bend so easily. Step and go baby!!!
I'll represent for the women. I started snowboarding at 29 years old and am now 56 and still at it. I have only recently missed a few seasons due to Covid and moving away from the Tahoe area. My 16 year old has skied since age 4 and I can't get him to come to the dark side ;). Last year for the very first time I started to wonder/worry about this age thing, and if I could imagine myself SNOWBOARDING in my 60's and 70's. It is normal to see men skiing in this age group but I never see women snow boarding at my age. It got me wondering if I had chosen the wrong snow sport. There is a fair amount of being on your ass, sitting or falling, which is just a fact when you push yourself. I don't mind it, it comes with the territory. Luckily I have never been hurt, but I stay on the edge of my skill level and took lots of one on one lessons to speed up my learning curve when I started (and to not let bad habits creep in). I also surfed in the 80's on my high school team in Huntington Beach but stopped when my family moved. Discovering snow boarding was a dream come true. The mountain doesn't move!!! And you don't wait in line for 'your turn'. I am going to continue to do this until something tells me I can't. I just don't do jumps (just little ones when no one is looking) and I don't bomb down the mountain, and I no longer will ski in bad conditions, no ice... I truly enjoy cruising and carving down blues, no longer into blacks. I would say I am upper level intermediate singer directional freestyler gal. I haven't tried to switch. I stick to what I am comfortable with. 3 moms and I took our sons on a Mom/Son trip to Keystone last year. You would have thought they would have been over it being with only 'moms', especially my son who broke his collar bone on a box! But they begged to do it again this year so here we go, it's a new tradition and the dad's are a little jealous! But I am the only mom who snowboards in the group and the other mom's seemed impressed, and that is when Ii realized I was a little bit of a freak of nature, or maybe a unicorn!? And I realized how much MORE physically challenging it is, than skiing, just on the 'up and down', sitting and squatting, cat trails, ski lift, ALL of it is a bit more taxing it seems. BUT, I HAVE DISCOVERED: snowboarding and surfing seem to be the two sports where you only get more 'cred' from the kids the older you are, which cracks me up!!!!
I learnt at 19 and did 3 seasons in the Alpes . After that I did 2 weeks holidays every year for the next 11 years . Last 10 years nothing - nada I thought I was over it . I’m now re buying the kit and heading off at 44 . It’s never too old , as long as you have a different approach. I’m not doing the park or off piste anymore but being in the mountains and shredding what I can and taking it easier . I still feel 22 in my mind and soul
Took up snowboarding not too long ago. Still riding at 61. My only regret is why didn't I start this earlier? I'm a kid at heart guys. Lot of riding to do before I hit 80.
I’m 47 and still rip backcountry like I was in my 20s…. Still have a crew of 5 that we all chase powder wherever it dumps and won’t stop til a tree well grabs me
I'm 49 and am going snowboarding for my first time in a couple weeks! have never been on skis or snowboard, never ice skated untill last winter and now play on a sunday night adult hockey league! Not sure if it's a mid life crisis or i'm just loving life?
Great video ! I’ll be 50 in May , this was my 30th season snowboarding . Started when I was 20 and never looked back . I was in Me. this past week helping a friends kid link some turns together he was 23 and I’ve been snowboarding longer than he’s been on earth . As far as longevity in the sport my secret goes like this , exercise off season , when u hit the hill don’t hold back -do those butters , ride switch , hit the boxes and kickers practice grabs . And know your setup , super important to dial your stance .and ride the correct board to weight ratio .Over time your techniques develop and you find that you’ still have a solid grab and will be able slide the boxes with style at any age . Stay with it it gets better with age
43 here and just had my 3rd time on a snowboard… so glad I decided to try bc it’s so much fun and I’m so happy with my progress! I’m gonna do this as long as my body will let me!!
Taught myself over covid at 47, 3 seasons later I'd consider myself an advanced rider but I gotta be careful doing tricks. I can remember falling day 2 and hitting the ground with my fist frustrated thinking I'll never be able to do this. Now I ride switch, butter, and can do 180s and almost have my 360 dialed in. Great sport. My advice is give it a solid week. I can imagine how hard it would be only going once a month
I would say people are never to old to do something that makes them happy! I'm Brazilian and I've started surfing when I was 6 years old, I switched over to skateboarding when I was 9 years old, and after moving abroad I discovered snowboarding, I was 29 years old back then. Today I'm 45 years old, I never stopped skateboarding and snowboarding and I hear often comments like "you're no longer 15 years old", "you get hurt because you're too old", or "you should start playing golf instead". You know what? I feel sorry for all these people, because life is too short and stressing and to think that people put so much limitations and rules in their lives just because of their age it is just depressing. With that said every sport specially extreme sports you have to do within your own abilities. Progression takes time, dedication, consistency and most important, it requires a lot of patience.
I think most people don’t realize that snowboarding really didn’t come on the mainstream scene until the 1980’s so most snowboarders who grew up with are in their 50’s. I am 52 and I board every season. If you are on green trails and not in the terrain park I am sure you will see snowboarders in their 70’s in 10-20 years. I plan to be one.
Yeah, I think you’re totally right! It’s crazy because I honestly never considered it being possible to snowboard so late into life but it’s entirely possible! Thanks so much for watching!
I'm silver years I started about 5 or 6 years ago. I love it but our season in So Cal is short. Looking for a damp board to protect knees...I also may get foot beds. Much love 💜
Is it possible to snowboard after 50? I'll let you know in a couple of years. I've been snowboarding since the mid '90's and have no intentions on quitting. In fact, i picked up snowskating this season---my 47th trip around the sun.
I started out surfing in Santa Cruz as a kid at 11 years old then started skating at 13… eventually I moved further up north closer to the mountains and started snowboarding at age 16 and stopped at 23… During Covid at age 31, I started skateboarding again and Last year at 34 years old I decided to hit the mountains again. A year later, it fully back to what I was doing in my early 20… How long have you been snowboarding for?
Baby Butters, how the should start looking when your 1st starting out one of the 1st steps before committing all the way, still looks cool especially at his Age.
50s, ffs young, 56 still can do all i did when 30 yrs younger, keeping fit, eat well, no problem , skate, surf, snowboard , only tip getting step in bindings this year
i started when i was 24 now 40 and just learned how to backflip, my best snowboard partner rider is Dennis that at met in the Park, he's over 60 and still doing jumps and rails. i want to be 100 and still doing it so i need to stop drinking.
@@TheGearLady I now snowboard a few times a year in the southern east coast, West Virginia and North Carolina… I love snowboarding, I just bought a DC The 156
I don't think Dick Schultz got the message it was too old at 53yo to START. AT 76 he is an instructor and I believe still competes. :-) You can do anything at any age if your body is in good shape. After all , it's all about the power of a made up mind, isn't it?
Waka waka. I have been welding bridges since I was 19. I’m 37 now. Started snowboarding when I was 33. I have had reconstructive shoulder surgery and two back surgeries. All from bridge injuries. I still go rip!
I start at 28 and I’m 57 now and I can’t wait to start my next season snowboarding.
