Want to clear the air. This video is in no way sponsored by Dopesnow. While the company brought me to their HQ to meet the team after a shoot in France, this video was my initiative and something I wanted to create. After riding for Dope this season I grew to love the brand, the product, and the people behind the company. I wanted to make a video that addressed the unmerited hate the company gets and show off the facts behind the brand. This is the result, love you all ❤

I personally don't really care one way or another, but FTC guidelines do require transparency about having a relationship with a brand, even if they didn't ask you to endorse their product when you speak about it.
Doesn't bother me personally, but figured I'd point it out in case you hadn't looked into it (I'm sure you have, but maybe this'll save a few comments from others haha). Don't want you to end up with a bad rep for an honest misunderstanding or mistake. Keep doing good work, bud!

Hate is a strong word but this is just cheap kook advertising. The most notable things dope snow have to show off are a 4 way stretch fabric that’s too thin to be a t-shirt, some DWR coated fabric that beads water for 12 hours before becoming a sponge, and a program to turn returned junk products into someone else’s regretful purchase.

    • @andrekvam7897

@@arbitraryalias9825 there are arguments to be made that not everyone needs gear that lasts 10 years and doesnt even need to be repaired or rewaxed/refilled with goretex or what have you the first two seasons. some people want to buy cool looking clothes that keep you warm enough for long enough to go skiing 4-5 times a year. and naturally purchasing top of the line gear is out of any sane persons budget.... for said use. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Knowing how much you can do yourself to waterproof (with waxes or coatings) you can make said product last longer, or choose to be upset that some of the cheapest gear you can find, doesnt last as long as the expensive products.
yes there is an argument for making only good quality equipment, that lasts, to save the planet, but you're not making that argument. you're just bashing a company making affordable clothing.

I would say watch geniune testing of the products like angrysnowboarder has done. Dope snow is lower than average quality and overpriced for its quality (despite being cheap). Dope is not the only brand guilty of this. As a general rule of thumb the old established brands like 686 offer a much better value for money at the netry level. And dope doesnt come close to the top end at all, as they admit. I can understand that they struggle with material sourcing etc, but the stitching and layering is sub par. No hate towards DOPE im sure they're tring to improve, but they're not there yet.

Yea great point Cube! From my end, I have been able to test their lineup this entire season in conditions all around the globe. While I’m not able to compare to the likes of 686 (haven’t tried their gear), I was able to compare it to Orage, Descente and Karbon-the brands I’ve worn for the last 15 years. Descente and Karbon offered better quality and better performance in tough conditions, but they also cost 3x. When compared to Orage, I found Dope’s offerings to be the same if not better in terms of performance and quality.
While there’s so many other brands that I haven’t tested, I’ve still skied my whole life and tried many different offerings along the way. From my experience, Dope drastically stands out from the competition as an amazing value proposition but this doesn’t mean they are the utmost very best option either.

my only experience with montec is a friend bought a jacket cuz it was a decent value, and it lasted around 2-3 weeks and then it had minor issues like small tears, seams coming apart, zippers jamming, etc. This killed the water proofing as now the seams were letting in about everything. In all fairness, we ride off piste in rough conditions, but still sad to see it only lasted less than a month. for comparison, i run volcom and thirtytwo, both of which have been through hell and back and will probably last another 3-4 seasons. if you ride resort, aren't constantly finding yourself in trees, and don't ride 6 days a week during the season, im sure it will be fine. but given what happened to my buddies jacket, i wouldn't trust it to last a season on my back
for 95% of riders out there, it will probably do the job just fine. EDIT: also just checked, for the same price you can get a hell of a lot better gear in a late season sale like on evo rn. 686, volcom, dc, burton, armada, etc. all for around the same price as dope. hell, even an arcteryx for like 80 bucks more

about 3/4 years ago dope did a photoshoot in my local snowpark after hours where they had their models stand and pose on a box and do other still shots in the park. the "riders" couldn't snowboard anywhere near well enough to be sponsored for their talent. very non core branding move... but then the last few seasons they had been sponsoring multiple riders and a filmer even paying them for dedicated shooting days. that was a great step up from the insta models they used before that to promote their gear

    • @PPKFilms
      @PPKFilms Год назад +21

On this (as someone who has worked for an outdoor brand organizing shoots), you have to differentiate product shoots (models wearing shit from next year to have photos for website and stores and catalogues etc) and sports marketing. Meaning that sometimes you choose models who can’t do the sport at a high level for your photos because they are good at standing in front of a camera m, are the right size for the samples you have etc… and then you have a team of athletes who represent your brand performance and values to the public. So even though they have good riders, they prob still do photo shoots in parks with models who don’t ride well. Different tools for different purposes :)

Everything is so well thought through, the jacket is light and soo flexible (I do ski racing, so it's quite important), and it has everything you need whilst simply looking nice. The quality is very good too. The only problem I had was that my ski jacket's front zipper broke the first day, but montec sent me another jacket for free, as it must have been a construction mistake. The brand, who they sponsor, their involvement in the industry, video parts etc all plays a role in how we support these companies. To me Dope snow has only ever been flashy instagram ads targeting the mainstream audience. To each their own but I don't get the sense (and seems I'm not the only one) that they're part of the fabric of snowboarding and I doubt you'll ever see any riders you look up to wearing it because of that. Yesterday I went skiing again and I was surprised how many dope/montec and Decathlon jackets I saw. Anyways don't worry, no one will say anything. In fact you'll probably find more people complimenting a stylish jacket than hating on it.

Don’t listen to the people saying negative things. It’s an awesome sport and honestly I see a lot of people wearing montec out in places like Colorado, including people who were decent skiers. I’ve even had people who work at the resorts, on more than one occasion, ask me about my montec gear and say that’s what they wear when they aren’t working. Even if the perception was different in Europe, honestly, it wouldn’t matter. Like most things in life, you will get more enjoyment out of it if you just focus on what you were doing, and let anyone else think whatever they want.
The reality is that 99% of people at the resorts are only focusing on what they are doing anyway and aren’t worried about your gear.

I would honestly say don't listen to people who say this is just 'Instagram snow gear'. I've got the Blizzard jacket and Notorious B.I.B pants and they're great. Dope really straddles that price gap between cheap / no-brand gear and stuff like Arc'teryx, while still being really good quality and wearing / moving really well. Not hating on Arc'teryx in particular as I have one of their jackets too but don't listen to the anti-hype on Dope. Maybe if you go backcountry for 176 hours straight and stay alive by eating the carcasses of dead bears you may need something more but that isn't most of us.

The problem I have with Dope/Montec is the pricing, it's marketed as 'affordable' when in reality it costs the same as any established brand's mid to low level gear (which is almost always much better quality). And also that employee saying they couldn't source gore-tex because it would be too expensive.. What a load of crap, reason they're not using quality fabrics is so they can maximise profits and keep manufacturing costs down.

I appreciaiate the point of cheap, more accessible outerwear for an average holiday maker, however the lack of support for the core community by selling direct to the customer, removes funding and jobs for local ski shops which are arguably the most import feature of the industry. They have staff who are passionate and can guide you to the right product for your needs which in some cases might be a dope snow jacket, and for others who require better quality products for big expeditions the shops can guide you to more higher end equipement like arcteryx or Patagonia. Ski shops also put on events and sposnor riders and promote ski films which are all integral parts of the core ski communtiy and ridestore have removed themselves from that which could be argued to benefit the consumer but only from a monitary point and also it means dopesnow get lots of attention which brings them more financial gain. Its much deeper than “quality and pro riders.” There bad rep comes from the way they've chosen to enter the market which has attracted a large consumer base that doesent care for or support the core community. That doesn’t mean everyone who rides the gear is like that in the same way not everyone in an arcteryx coat shreds, and supports the comminty. It goes both ways but the vast majority of people attracted to dopesnow are more interested in mellow ride days followed by drinks in the lodge than serious progression and just shredding which is okay, but again that doesnt represent the core community and that is where I think the “controversy” comes from. If you just look at there marketing campaigns you see photos of people doing some mellow turns down resort groomers and cute portraits of attractive people vs a company like arcteryx where there website shows the highest end athletes using the gear in some of the harshest conditions. Furthermore those other companies offer customers who visit there sites, blogs and films and community events whereas dopesnow is only focused on selling products. Sorry for this rant it lasted a lot longer than expected. Big appreciation for you steep and everything youve done to get to where you are but I dont think its fair to make a 15 minute video defending the company and alagations, when youre now getting free gear, and potentially financial incentive and then just ignore the actual heart of the problem because as much as people go on about the quality, price etc that doesnt differentiate them from other cheap brands and where the “hate” comes from. Lots of love brotha I hope you don’t take this as any personal disresepct I just wanted to get my point across

I was able to ski about 60 times this year and the Montec gear held up phenomenally in all conditions, freezing rain to deep powder, I was surprised at how much freedom movement I had in my lower body, the pants were a bit of a tight fit and I was worried, but I was able to move freely and the pants give me a small amount of tension on my legs which is fucking awesome. The only thing I’ll say is if it’s below 0, consider wearing a sweatshirt, I run hot so I was perfect comfortably but my girlfriend needed to put a sweatshirt on under on really cold days… not to mention we both feel great wearing it, look good feel good, feel good ski good, ski good live good, live good die good :).

I liked the way their gear looks, but at the time it wasn't a well known brand (at least not to a new rider who mostly knows bigger brands like Burton). I've heard mixed comments, but it seemed appealing to me because their gear is cheap and looks good to me, I figured there had to be a catch. Ultimately I got some Burton gear for a decent price from my local ski shop; I'll definitely buy a jacket or pants from Dopesnow in the future if my current gear rips or I have enough money to buy spare/new gear.

what they did was listing their own products beside other well known, well established brands in a store which wasn't clearly connected to the dope brand.
By that, they basically put dope on the same level as the other brands. (but as you said, dope wasn't that good at the time)
It's clever marketing, but i dont like the part of them not making it 100% clear that dope was a in house brand that was not competitive to the other brands (performance wise)
Because that probably tricked people into thinking them buying a brand jacket, but instead they got dope snow.
Wich always looked trendy, but doesnt perform.
In the end, the user must inform him/her self about the product.
But if you end up buying crap, because its on the same page as high quality brand clothing, you got tricked by the page.
And there for, it's "dope snow" that went against the moral of providing good products, but instead took the money route.
Beside that part, their marketing was super good.
The outfit competition and so on really made them grow.
    Clever

Yes R&D exists but I’d truely want to know if they have a science based material development division, orrrrrr, what is probably likely, them sourcing from different manufactures and picking the ones they like the most.
Which by itself is not bad at all. Everyone does this. However where it gets sketchy and maybe not completely honest is when the company then says “we have our own proprietary material”. But really they only Tweaked them slightly with the over seas factory and then saying that that have materials similar to GORTEX even tho they little material development.
Just a huggggge hunch based off of other people in industry focused on low cost goods and branding, really quite similar to what’s been going on with montec and dopes rebranding campaign they’ve been on for the past couple years.

If they had 3xl jackets then I would be able to test them out lmao. I love the designs though.

Fun fact: my friend's family owns the factory that made these two brands' clothes in Ningbo, China. 😂 ¥599 here and $599 there.

I mean, is nobody complaining about how much Burton is charging for their gear? I’ve ripped Burton, O’Neil, and Ripzone gear. I’ve worn Mountain Warehouse ski pants until they are no longer waterproof. Montec gear has held up for me for the last two seasons, and that’s with buying refurbished items.
I would encourage you to buy a size up to allow you to layer your gear. But now I ride with a group of 5 people that all have dope/montec stuff. No rips and no complaints (other than price, but that’s life).

No. Because everyone knows that Burton is the most expensive snowboard specific gear out there. But the quality is there to match. Unlike Dope/Montec. But you get what you pay for, so it's priced to match.

As someone who has a few extra pounds around my tummy so snowboard pants don't ever fit right, and only snowboards casually, I can't justify paying the crazy prices some of the bigger brands charge for a pair of snowboards pants that aren't going to fit me perfectly. If you want me to pay that much, they should have more variety in length and waist sizes like jeans do. I will be purchasing some Dopesnow items for the upcoming season. Heard good things, and the price point is fair.
