My aim with this video is to hopefully raise awareness on some things to keep in mind when looking at ski suits for the upcoming season.

    tl;dw: montec offers an affordable kit that lessens the barrier of entry for people to get into skiing or snowboarding, while still providing quality features that will be adequate for most average resort skiers. i do not think montec is the right piece of gear for professionals of the sport, people who may be spending long hours on backcountry tours or true expert riders. i have had no issues with my montec gear after nearly 120 days of use and am excited to see what they come out with for the 2023-2024 season.

    Hey Lucas - props to you for turning me on to Montec last season. Saw you wearing their gear and decided to investigate the brand. Bought shell and bibs and no complaints from this recreational skier. Price is right and seams are tight. Love all the features you highlighted and not a day on the mountain goes by without a shoutout to and from another skier wearing their gear.

    I bought a Montec bib last year on a whim and absolutely loved it. It's a shell so nice and roomy like you said, and here in California it was great to throw it on with just a light shirt and was plenty warm while staying dry. Going to get a jacket next. Good to hear your review on the adarondak. I think I agree with you. I might get a second one later to try out.

    Hey Lucas great review. Very honest and from the hip. I am 61 and an avid skier here in Northern Ontario we don’t get the snow dumps you get in the west but we do get some bitter cold days. I am considering the Montec Bibs so in your opinion are they a good choice for me or should I consider another brand that may be better at keeping wind out. As of late our major cold days have been less frequent and we do get the fluctuating temps that bring wet snow and freezing rain as well.

    Totally agree with your review. Great product for the recreational skier, or 95% of us. Quality product for the price. It can no way compete with a high end gore-tex product built for extreme sport/weather, but they don't market it as that type of product. I prefer shells so I can control the level of insulation - my one complaint is that they do not make the pants in a shell, only insulated. You have to go with the bibs, which I don't like. Otherwise, I recommend the product.

    I have a jacket. Bought it from their renewed section of their site so it was used but looked brand new. I’ve enjoyed it. Lots of features for the price. I have a Burton too but the Montec has more features. The only downside is the hood is on the small side and it’s difficult to fit over my helmet.

      Well i certainly would love to take advantage of that if my parents had the money but I gotta buy my own stuff and only skiing three times a year doesn’t really make sense to spend 1000 on ONE jacket. That’s not even taking into account the pants and such. It just doesn’t make sense to invest like that when it’s not necessary and you only ski resort. Anything that can decrease the barrier to entry for skiing (which is already a really expensive sport) is awesome to me and while 250 for a jacket isn’t cheap it certainly is affordable when you look at other gear out there. And for the price. Quality is pretty dang good.

      @gerakore8948 - washing doesn’t ruin Gore-Tex. Unless you use concentrated liquid detergent by the cup full and don’t do a double wash cycle. Use scent and dye free powder and an extra dry cycle. Better yet is Revivex, grangers, or nikwax wash designed for waterproof breathables. Follow the drying instructions on the tag. Washing makes the dwr work better. Use a spray on dwr by Revivex, grangers, or nikwax instead of buying new gear. Making waterproof outerwear is terrible for the environment. Making it last as long as possible is being a responsible human being. I have goretex pants from 2005 that I loan to friends that 250+ days and they are still kicking ass.

    I think the biggest thing US people need to know is that they are Euro Sizing. Take US sizing and add 1. So me as a linebacker sized US XXL thought that their XXL didn't fit the hug test was too snug in the upper legs. If they made 3X items, I'd give them a go again.

    • @aaallllen
      @aaallllen 8 месяцев назад

      I've had some Gortex Pro Shell pieces that have lasted years and years. For my 50-80 days in a season, I swap between outfits though and Gortex needs regular cleaning in tech-fabric wash to keep up the DWR.
      If people are new, I suggest dark bottoms against car and mud stains. I'm usually in Tahoe and the most important features are typically hip or pit zips. Non-insulated shells let you go deep into the season. If you're a boarder like me, flip the pant cuffs up between the lodge/cart and resort.

      I will say I really like mine but agree with Lucas. The zipper placement is just super odd sometimes. On the doom jacket it would be nice to see something to keep the zippers on the front from falling down when you do decide to unzip the front for some air. I’ve found that unzipping both zippers on the sides of the neck down to about the collar bone and folding the fabric back into the jacket is the best way to deal with them if you need more air on a warm day

    I would assume is a "Snowboarding thing" to talk down brands like these

    • @cheddarmx5969
      @cheddarmx5969 6 месяцев назад

      People make fun of it because it’s typically associated with a) instagram influencers who aren’t good skiers or b) tourists. It’s not necessarily a problem with their stuff it’s more a problem with their marketing department and their lack of awareness when it comes to ski culture. Dope, has kinda somewhat reversed their image with their deals with steep steep (a beloved yter in the freeski community) and Jesper Tjäder. I believe if Montec could get their marketing in that direction (potential signing someone like Lucas) then they could end up changing their public image.
      - Sincerly, your local dirty park rat
      Edit: just read the “snowboarding thing” part and hating on snowboarders is literally exactly what people are doing to you for wearing Montec. Kinda hypocritical.

    The issue is their support of the industry. Do they sponsor athletes? Do they sponsor films? Contests? Events? Do they put money back into the community/sport? Do they provide discounted gear or partner programs for guides? Do they contribute to POW or other organizations? What are their sustainability practices? Why do you think they can offer gear for so cheap? Because they contribute nothing back to the sport. That is why I don’t understand how people buy from them. Support brands that support athletes. For idiots who don’t understand, go look up how many athletes and guides arcteryx or burton or the north face support. Not just free gear, salaries. Can’t believe you have an audience and use it to support a brand that doesn’t support athletes. Brands like Montec and Dope are ruining the industry.

      I understand where you are coming from and totally respect it. From an environmental standpoint, all of their suits are made from recycled polyester and they work with Bluesign to utilize sustainable textiles in their production. From my perspective, they are the ONLY brand that have reached out to me to help support what I do here on RUclips, so its hard for me to think that they don't support the industry.
      Support in any industry comes in different shapes and sizes and not all companies are in a place to put athletes on full salaries - sometimes the most they are able to do is provide them with gear and ski trips throughout the season. It's not really fair to compare a multi-billion dollar company like North Face with a much smaller company and expect them to have the same budget to monetarily "give back" to the community . Furthermore, one could argue that by providing gear at an affordable price point, they are helping to make these activities more accessible to the masses, and in turn are supporting the industry as a whole. I don't think its companies that ruin the industry - I believe the industry is constantly changing and most people mistake that change with the industry being ruined.
      As I mentioned, I understand your points and am not in the business of defending Montec. I have no allegiance to them, but just don't personally buy this blanket statement that they don't do anything to support the industry. Thank you for watching.

      @@LucasCatania17 I appreciate you sharing your angle but just totally disagree. I can’t speak for skiing, but the culture of snowboarding has been built by the legends (pros) who were given a platform by the brands that sponsored them, their films, the contests they won, etc. Every dollar that goes to a brand like montec takes away from those who are driving the culture/sport forward (the pro riders). While the big names do well, the smaller names don’t make that much. Like the dust box crew for example. Your taking away from those riders, their films, their contests, etc by supporting Montec. Your taking away from the dream of being pro itself. When you could support it by buying literately any other outwear brand. Sure you save some money but you don’t support the sport or the culture. Tons of smaller companies than the ones I named sponsor athletes, and even single location board shops sponsor young pros. Even resorts sponsor young pros, like snowbird does with lila yeoman. Any brand who understands the culture sponsors riders. It’s literately how the sport works. Same goes for climbing, mountaineering, biking, and other extreme sports. Without supporting brands there are no athletes, no contests, no films, no events. Could Travis rice have made his movies without sponsors? Or Alex Honnald? Name a brand that makes skis or snowboards that doesn’t sponsor riders? So why shouldn’t the outwear companies? Actually name any brand that makes any type of gear in either sport that’s not Montec or dope that doesn’t sponsor riders or events? Even wax companies (zumwax) and sunscreen companies (sunbum) and headwear companies (coal) and eyewear companies (pitviper) and base layer companies (Smartwool) sponsor athletes. It’s literately the only way to have pro athletes in these sports. Montec has plenty of money to sponsor athletes. They just choose not to because they don’t care about the sport or culture. They are vultures. Every other piece of gear you use from your helmet to your goggles to your boots, gloves, bindings, poles and skis, all those brands sponsor athletes. You are trippin. The brands didn’t just start big. They earned their spots and always sponsored athletes.

    I really like the availability of lower cost options to keep snow sports accessible to people, but at the same time find it so hard not to hate montec. Their whole brand identity (I'm looking at them as synonymous with Dope because it's the same company) is just cheesy and cheap and targeted so much towards people who want a flashy outfit for their instagram rather than actually participating in and enjoying the sport. Their approach of having such a broad range of styles and colours which rotate so quickly is also straight from the fast-fashion playbook, and any snow brand should be way more environmentally conscious.
