He did that to keep air filter from being covered in oil 😊

So when you readjusted the valves that were 5 and 7 initially ... did you go tighter to 3 and 5 or what? Curious, as we are doing this Sunday to our Craftsman! GREAT video, btw!

Appreciate it! I just went back to the same 5 and 7, a little on the tight side though with the feeler gauges.

Could a bad head gasket also cause the oil to smell like gasoline? My craftsman yt3000 with a craftsman Briggs and Stratton 21hp engine lawn tractor wouldn't turn over, and the oil smelled like gasoline, so I changed the air and oil and oil filter. It ran a little, I mowed a little, with smoke and intermittent smoke, then a lot of smoke. There was liquid all over and the oil smells like gasoline again.

Could possibly be a head gasket or the carburetor is flooding the engine. The 21hp are notorious for both issues. The crankcase filling with gas more than likely a carburetor issue. When it's sitting it will flood the cylinder and fill the crankcase and will cause a lot of smoking and possible cylinder/bearing damage.

@@McCarronMotorWorksthanks for responding! I had just changed the oil due to gasoline smell in the oil, and also changed the oil filter and air filter. Then I started it up immediately without letting it sit, and there was the smoke, but it went away and then was intermittent before huge billowing smoke! I had to turn it off, then checked the oil and there was the gasoline smell and it doesn't start again. :(
