a neat trick to painting lenses is using GW technical paints like Spiritstone Red, Waystone Green and Soulstone Blue. They dry with a very glossy finish which looks exactly like the reflective finish of a lense:)
Came here looking for info on painting apothecaries but I have been wondering about exactly this for a while!
Shoutout to giving us the answer in the first 2 minutes versus waiting until the last minute.
I legit watched the rest of the video just because i could enjoy it!
Thanks! Yeah no point messing about :)
Payne's Gray is hands down the best gray on the market. Its a great color
Yeah, I love it for recess shading silvers, too, it looks gorgeous...
Great content as always, very nice paint job!
Thanks Jono!
Great video - thanks!
One idea for potentially preventing you from accidentally painting on your crisp white armour; could you spray a layer or two of satin varnish over the model once the armour is complete but before you do anything else? This would seal in the white and, theoretically, act as a 'save' point to let you remove wayward paint splashes afterwards? What do you think?
You absolutely could do that - I'm just a maverick 🤣
Oil paint! Dude, this is the best painting trick of the year. Fabulous, fabulous.
Glad you liked it!
Holy Mundus Planus, Jagahtai! That white is so simple and looks spectacular. The blue undercoat is a clever trick to keep it cold and clean looking. Thanks for the great tips!
Cheers
I appreciate that you said the trick immediatly, just because that i will watch the whole video. Thanks! (PS sooo tired of youtube videos drawing the reveal out)
Cheers 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach Could you do a video of how to use oilwash on cloth and especially cloaks?
I'll add it to the list
I now can save some time when I paint white
What i do is basecoat moletow petrol. Then I spray titanium white from a 45' a little bit then from above until the model reads as white. You get a really nice cold white. Then i panel line with paynes grey oil paint.
nice tutorial! thanks! I am going to try it here soon!
Thanks!
Can you recommend a few brush sizes? I absolutely love the way your brushes hold form and snap, and want to get a few. Wanted to pick a few up for painting infantry sized models
I use Rosemary and Co Series 33 (link in video description)
I use a size 2, 1 and 0
I plan to use something similar for my apothecary I just picked up. Ulthuan grey instead of corax for a base though (hopefully my cheap crappy airbrush can manage that once it gets here lol) and highlighting with vallejo white. No idea what I'm doing but the oil has worked on my tests so far.
Good luck!
This is awesome! Three quick questions:
1 - What was the blue undercoat spray you used?
2 - How did you cleanup the few spillages you had on to the white armour? For example, the red from the apron
3 - Would all the colours you used for the armour also work well for, say, sisters of battle?
Thanks!
Oh and one more! What colours would you recommend if you wanted to apply chips to the armour?
Thanks! Ok:
1. Tempest Blue from Colour Forge. It's a direct match for Kantor Blue
2. Some Corax White
3. Yes
4. Sonething like Skavenblight Dinge
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks!
Superb end result!
Thanks!
I really like this method, the oil paint is great but the blue undercoat is also really good. I’ve never used oil paints, do you need to varnish your model before/after you apply them? Also putting in a request for an Emperor’s Spears tutorial 🙏
Put a gloss varnish on before you apply the oil so it runs in recesses nicely🙌
A gloss varnish will reduce the surface tension and helpnthe oil flow better - I didn't need it here though. You can also use it to protect previous layers if you want to be extra cautious!
No ETA on Emperor's Spears I'm afraid - I may get round to them eventually
Just such an incredible vid for how to do this guy right and make it an ease - dare I say actually fun!
Cheers - glad you liked it!
Thank you for the painting guide!!
Glad you liked it!
I find soulblight grey shade is incredible for quick whites - I know you've used it on a white scars marine before. How would you say the oil wash compares?
The oil wash is a lot easier - to use and clean up!
@@ThePaintingCoach I'll have to check it out sometime then - I've always been a little scared of oil washes for some reason, not sure why...
Try it on some spare parts to get used to it :)
Hi. Nice tutorial video. love it! Got one question though, do you varnish the model before doing the oil wash recess shade? Thanks 😊
Thanks - I don't - but if you would rather be safe then you can pf course do this - gloss or satin is best
@@ThePaintingCoach Great! Thanks alot. Good to know that it’s not compulsory. Appreciate your reply. 😊👍🏻
I really like your content coach would like to know what ratio oil to odorless thinner did you use than you as i want to want to try it with some white armor and skull bits.
Thanks - it was that amount of oil in the video and maybe a pipette of thinner - the ratio ien't exact sorry
Another great video my man
Thanks!
I tried this on a test model but used Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color which is a pre thinned oil wash and it worked just as well. I have also tried a brown one for Imperial Fists and its amazing. Oil washes, I am a believer now!
Which blue base spray did you use before spraying over it with white? A brighter blue or would a GW Mcragge Blue be good enough for it?
Glad the panel liners worked - I can't seem to get on with them!
I used Tempest Blue spray from Colour Forge - this is a direct match for Kantor Blue from citadel. I think Macragge Blue should be fine though
Great video as always 👍 I've tried the oil wash before, however when I come to cleaning up the excess, I always end up stripping al thrl paint and going back to plastic. What am I doing wrong? Please help! 🙏
No idea sorry - you can try a gloss varnish before oil wash to protect - i have found the only time I have an issue is if I scrub too hard 🤔
Thanks for the video, which blew did you use for the under coat before doing White scar White?
I used Tempest Blue from Colour Forge - it's an exact match for Kantor Blue if you can't get it where you are 👍🏻
How long did you leave the oil wash to dry before going back in with the others? Looking good!
Cheers - I didn't leave it really - just cracked on. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process though 👍🏻
Lovely work!
Thanks!
I would love to know the brush you use when doing detail work with contrast paints
I use a range of brushes - the smallest one I use is a size 00 series 323 from Rosemary and Co 👍🏻
Great tip, thanks
That blue undercoat can be macragge blue, right? Though I would think that spraying white over would discolor to a lighter blue
It may do - but there is so little of it on display it should be fine - especially after the Paynes Grey
Is vallejo airbrush white primer a decent substitute for white scar? I'd rather skip the rattle can / another trip to my local shop when i have some whites on hand already.
Yes should be absolutely fine 👍🏻
how did you do the underspray on this one? I found a comment you left saying it was Corax White and a Kantor Blue equivalent, but how was that done?
Blue first all over, then white? White with a subtle blue from underneath after? Was it primed first?
This was sprayed blue all over, then the majority of the model was sprayed white, leaving the blue only barely visible in the deepest shadows - essentially it was a very liberal zenithal coat
Very timely video for me. I’m starting a White Scars army for Horus Heresy…
Enjoy!
I was concerned painting cpt Messinius because I felt I couldn’t push up from the white scar spray. Your highlight here look very muted too. I was thinking of an all over of apothecary white to give me room to come in with a punchier highlight. Thoughts?
Also, how does the oil paint compare to the enamel based panel liners? I used a Tamiya brown panel liner for Messinius and it was way more messy and didn’t flow into the recesses as well as I expected.
I prefer the oil to the panel liners - I have Tamiya ones and don't like them.
You can try the apothecary white - just be careful it doesn't go streaky
Looks great!
Thanks!
Which AK interactive white did you use btw? The ‘Extreme white’ or the white from the 3rd gen white acrylics set?
Good question - I didn't realise there were two! This is the 3rd Gen one
Great vid!
Thanks!
Love this scheme, 10/10
Thanks!
Is it just the camera or does the Armor have a blue tint to it? If so it actually works really nicely compared to other shades of white
It's a combination of the blue undercoat and the paynes grey wash 👍🏻
Payne's Grey is a bluish grey
I've tried to get into oil washes lately but I can't figure out what the correct ratio of spirits to paint, what do you use?
Not overly helpful I know but I do it by eye - I usually start with a pipette of thinner and a cm of oil - check my latest video on an Imperial Fist to see this in action
@@ThePaintingCoach I think that's quite helpful actually! Like I figured its mostly by vibe lol. Thank you so much, your videos inspired me to start trying to use oils!
Awesome! Glad they helped :)
Awesome footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Did you varnish the White before adding the Payne's Grey? Or can you get a good capillary action without? Great job 👍🏾
Thanks! I didn't bother varnishing and it worked fine - so depends on your preference I guess! There is no harm in doing it that way then adding matt varnish over it
@@ThePaintingCoach oh that is good to know! I had always thought you HAD to varnish before using oil paints for pin washing etc, but if you can do it without I may give it a try 😁👍🏾 Many thanks for taking the time to respond 🙌🏾
@@ShadowlessFist no problem - it does depend a bit on the surface - if you have something super matt like pro acryl, you'll deffo need to varnish it - but anything slightly satin and up will be fine
Be very careful around the white armor….. 😂 I always mess it up a little
I like push fit kit.
What blue did you use as the undercoat?
Tempest Blue from colour forge - it's the same colour as kantor blue from citadel
Hey there Coach! May i ask you something? What can I do to make the White Scar Spray look so good? For me, it builds up really quickly. It always looks like it has sand in it (very grainy). Even after I shake it for 5 minutes plus. It's really not like any other rattlecan spray...
I can't say I have had any issues with it (I can't speak for temperature/humidity issues) but here are some tips...
1. Warm the can up in warm water
2. Shake for 5 minutes
3. Spray the can into the air - this removes any dried paint on the nozzle that can cause speckles on the mini
4. Start and finish the spray off the mode - move it across and use short bursts to build it up slowly
Hope that helps!
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks!
No problem
I had the same outcome with the first few minis I sprayed with White Scar (very grainy) The thing that fixed it for me was spraying the paint closer to the mini/model and the next set of minis I primed with it came out very smooth. Hope this helps
Lol i figured this out yesterday! Same model/same reason.
I find it doesn't register as white but a very light indigo blue to me, I actually like it more that way.
Bit late to the party, but with the pure white highlight, do you think it only worked because of the blue undercoat under the white base? Typically I've always seen people espouse the use of a more off-white (Ulthuan Grey etc) rather than going in with white scar straight as the base, to allow some room for highlighting.
Never too late! I used a slightly brighter white than White Scar - either AK 3rd Gen White or Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White are brighter than both the White Scar primer and pot of paint - you can use Corax White as an off white base if you prefer as well 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach Good to know - thanks!!
wow this looks fantastic coach just curious would this work on corax white base? or does it have to be a pure white?
Should work fine 👍🏻
Absolutely LOVE the non citadel paints you used
As Silver Templars would the chest piece not be yellow with a black background? Or is it gold because it's an apothecary?
Gold as it's the apothecary - I felt a yellow one would make it look a bit cartoon-like
Did you gloss varnish before applying the oil wash?
No I didn't bother - but you can if you want to be extra careful 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach Perfect, TY for the response.
No problem 👍🏻
Yay silver Templars love!!!
Will try and finish an army of them for 10th!
Great video
Thanks Ricky
Don't know how I missed it fast forwarded/rewinded several times but can some plz tell me at which point does he do the purple on that tank?? Only reason I clicked.
Sorry it's not on there - but is really easy!
1. Paint glass white
2. Cover with luxion purple
3. Add a second coat of luxion in the bottom left corner in and L shape
4. Mix some white paint and luxion purple together and paint 2 small diagonal lines across the transition area
I've got a detailed vial tutorial as part of my Fabius Bile tutorial too
@@ThePaintingCoach oh wow outstanding thank you so much you're the best!!
Cheers
Thanks!
Thank you!
Is the Odorless White Spirit mandatory? First time I've heard of this thinner!
It is not! But it is a little more palatable indoors! You can also get an artists one called sansodor - a lot more pricey though!
@@ThePaintingCoach so oils need this kind of thinner generally?
Yes if you want to make a wash with them - you can use them out of the tube for some other effects. The thinner is also good for correcting any mistakes you make with the oil 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach thank you for your advice! I’ve enjoyed your content for a few years and always appreciate your straightforward tips
No problem at all - any time!
This is fantastic
Thanks!
Very nice

So good
Cheers Mike!
Awesome

Nice
I just like the soft welsh accent.
Cwmry am byth
Thanks! Diolch!
"Be very careful" he says, jerking his brush around at lightspeed mere milimeters away from the amazing white xD I seriously don't get it
In English, the traditional plural of "helix" is "helices". That said, you can also use "helixes", which is formed by the regular noun pluralization process. According to Google NGram, "helices" is more common in all the English databases other than English Fiction. I don't know which is more common in spoken English.
WHAT BLUE?
Tempest Blue from Colour Forge - however you can also use Kantor Blue as this is an exact match. In theory any dark blue should be fine
@@ThePaintingCoach how do you pick what washes to use on a color or what to edge highlight with ? Im color blind
@@ThePaintingCoach I like how some ppl do white because i want to paint grey knights white.
@@ThePaintingCoach is primer and base coat the same thing? Choosing a base coat is overwhelming how do you decide?
No - primer is the first layer and tends to be a bit more hard wearing - it helps the adhesion of the subsequent layers of paint. Base coat is the first layer of colour you put down.
Some primers like the citadel sprays can also double up as a base colour to save time
there's nothing easy about not touching the white, and you didn't show how to fix when a mistake is made...
Can just absorb it back up with a brush as it takes a while to dry,
Great tutorial, 1 question. For the odorless white spirit, can i use ak interactive thinner? Never used oil paint or white spirit. Cheers
Thanks - I have never used it - but I think it should be ok - my advice would always be to try it with the oil on a spare part first just in case 👍🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach will do thanks!
