Excellent work, Darcy! White doesn't have to be a nightmare these days, but I really do need to get some of those ProAcryl paints. I'm using Vallejo whites and getting decent results, keeping it thin but not too thin is the key.
Can confirm that Pro Acryl white is the GOAT of white paints. I even use it sometimes for priming some parts or bits that have been glued later on painted models (like purity seals). It can even be painted over black in a couple of coats without difficulty
Painting everything before the white is such a good tip that seems obvious after you learn it but would def not have occurred to me if you hadn't said it! Thank you for the awesome tutorial!
I absolutely love the brassy gold-ish colours you've used for the sawblade arms on the backpack! I don't suppose you could share the recipe for those too?
I think it was just Gharaghak's Sewers (maybe with a little Wyldwood) over a bright Silver for the dark brass. And then just Skeleton Horde Contrast for the light bronze.
@@DarcyBonoCreations is one of those combos how you did the aquila on his chest? Awesome white recipe btw - I'm going to use this on my Sanguinary priest
I wish I could comment on ur page with pictures. Ur tip of using medium, then applying wash, amazing. I was scared at first, but the result was amazing.

I like to paint and watch videos and it makes very nice listening so I can look up if I need to learn something but can just listen to the rest. Love that I found you
Oh wow thank you! But I am very small potatoes compared to Louise Sugden (youtube.com/@roguehobbies) of Rogue Hobbies and Lyla Mev (youtube.com/@LylaMev). I do really appreciate the compliment and the feedback as far as listening. I never know if I'm talking too much or over explaining 😅.

I paint all my 40k stuff clean as well. I know it's not grimdark, but i like it. Your point of it is art was a interesting take and I hadn't considered it before.
I’ve seen so many videos on painting white armor miniatures but this video demonstrates the best approach - the technique is simple and fast with surprisingly good results
8:07, also, that really is the White Scars aesthetic. There are other Legions for those interested in grim dark white, but Scars should be stark and clean. Maybe the occasional chip or scratch, but clean white is what sets them apart as a real challenge to paint well.
That's the first time I have come across this kind of use for medium. I have moved recently from relying slapping on washes to proper recess shading and I think it's going to help a bunch. Thank you
Getting into the hobby, going to start a tau sept that is going to be primarily white, and I want a brilliant white for them as well. I have taken college level painting and I was aware of the shadow accenting the color however I had forgottten that. So I really appreciated that detail. I also am learning the flood/flow/fill method is crucial in miniatures. Thank you for the detailed description and demonstration.
Are you kidding me? that looks so simple and practical! Absolutely going to give it a try when I get started on my White Scars. Its Epic scale but hopefully the principles are the same!
Yep, same principles but one thing to keep in mind for epic scale is that the recesses may be more shallow. That being said, use just a tiny bit of everything in the video at time, otherwise you'll just end up with a basic all over shade coat instead of a recess shade. Just use everything more sparingly is what I'm trying to say 😅
Yea good advice on the wash, I'm new to contrast paints but your method really does make a good wash for white armour, I struggled to get a good wash otherwise. Personally I do a base coat in Vallejo silver grey, which by eye is pretty much white, use your wash method then highlight, as the highlight stands out just a little more for definition. Thank you for the video.
I’m pumped to try this! I’ve been holding off on painting Comstar for my BattleTech games because I just couldn’t be bothered to gather the oil paints and all that required for the other “easy” method.
I'm actually in a constant debate with my husband (scale modeler) about Contrasts vs Oils. Honestly it feels like they do almost the exact same thing but Contrasts have a way faster drying time. They both create filters and gradients, but the only thing oils seem superior at is creating grittier streaking effects 🤔
@@DarcyBonoCreations I’ll take your word for it! If you have a recipe for a good looking black too, that’d be nice. Black and white are what I struggle with the most on my test pieces. I usually try one black mini every couple months, shrug, then just paint it navy blue or something.
I do a cold blue in this video: ruclips.net/video/JvQjhXezdic/видео.html Also do you have the Citadel Colour app. It's free and they have a whole library of color recipes in there.
I'm waiting for my Leviathan box 'nids to arrive and and dreaming up paint schemes. One had white carapaces but I wouldn't have known how to even get started on those. I'm gonna give this a shot! Looks great!
Took you advice and used the Army Painter Mixing Balls and pulverized those pesky gigantic pigment into submission, as an added measure I mixed in roughly 50/50ish Lahmian Medium. So far so good. My Corax White applied a lot smoother this time. after I paint all the details (As per your video) before trying out Soulblight Grey and/or Apothicary white for shading as I am looking for grey mid tones rather than cool or warm tones. I will let you know how this turn out I will also look into PRO ACRYL. Call me obsessed, but I like the challenge of using Citadel Paints. 😀
This is fantastic. Ive always followed the standard gw way of doing white, off white, recess agrax, pure white on top. But my hands shake to much to get it perfect. This seems so much easier. Great video Darcy thank you
Well thank you! And you can absolutely still do the GW way with this method. The medium just helps with the recess shade is all, and the brown from the Agrax results in a warmer white.
Ok, I have watched SO MANY painting videos and I have literally NEVER seen anyone else do the "put a layer of lahmian medium down first to paint on a wet surface" and it's just... so brilliant. As someone who's background is in traditional art medium, I *instantly* just had my mind blown with the possibilities. Instant subscribe.
No, I rarely paint vehicles, but I think my husband (scale vehicle modeler) has some by AK Interactive. It's basically the same concept. The panel liners use white spirits or some other alcohol, right?
Just found your channel. Great stuff. Failed so many times trying to paint white, going to give this a go after I have finished up my Iron Orcs, they dont tend to go for the white armor look 🙂 'This is art, you can make it look however you want' every painter should listen to this, box art is box art, paint your own thang!
This looks excellent, I'm excited to try it on my 3 unpainted apothecaries and my eldar. I totally agree about the weathering thing too. Maybe it's because I started in 2nd edition, but I love my models to look clean and vibrant
Late to the party but how did you paint the armature on the apothecary’s back pack? That aged machinery is really neat and beats the lead bleacher null oil combo
Nice tutorial for contrast white armor! I kind of wish it had come sooner, but I'm committed to my nid scheme now, lol. Also, I think I know how but just in case, how did you do the glass windows on the case he's carrying?
Thank you! The glass panels were done basically the same as the following (ruclips.net/user/shortscUXJ9_2OR7M?feature=share) BUT with a few exceptions: 1) Coat the surface with Lahmian Medium first. 2) Use Kroxigor Scales 3) Once dry, repeat the process closer to the darker parts only.
Looks great!! I don't quite follow the Lamia Medium approach though. When putting it on the entire panel you're thinning the paint that's going on (making it more transparent and like a glaze). The narration suggests it pushes the color towards the recesses . . . wouldn't a wash or contrast (heavy wash) medium do more of that -- since it helps break the surface tension of the water in the paint? And, if you're making your paint more like a glaze . . .why not just mix it the way you like on your wet pallette and then apply it to the mini upside-down like it was shown? i think i'm missing an important detail
Thanks! The shade you mix is a wash (I use the term synonymously). The Lahmian Medium layer you apply first just helps it to prevent from sitting on the flat surfaces. You could apply it just as a regular glaze, but the Lahmian Medium layer helps it auto diffuse. Give it a try with and without it and you'll better see what I mean.
Thank you! It was a bright silver base coat of Vallejo Game Air Silver (applied with a brush) and then a coat of a mix of Snakebite Leather with a pinch of Fyreslayer Flesh Contrast. Edge highlighted with Pro Acryl Bold Gold
