The Büchner Funnel Hash Drying Technique in Detail with Tyler Markwart

  • In this video, Tyler Markwart explains the Büchner Funnel technique he developed for quick-drying ice hash without a freeze dryer. While we all wish we had freeze-dryers, their price puts them out of reach for most home growers. This Büchner Funnel technique will remove the vast majority of water in just 6-10 minutes. Then you can finish it with a fan, freezer or dry ice.
    This video goes into detail describing the equipment, price points, how to set it up, how to use it, potential failure points and, of course, best practices.
    Parts list for device as used in the video:
    Buchner Funnel: amzn.to/35cjYCP
    Flask: amzn.to/3H4HAH0
    Vacuum Pump: amzn.to/3v0fcmO
    37 Micron 5x5 Filter Bags: amzn.to/3I2Om1i

    Read through a forum and found a useful tip, to protect your pump unplug the hose from the pump end while it is still running and allow some fresh air in to purge the moisture out of the pump. Otherwise the moisture will mix with the oil damaging your pump

    Nice work guys! I work with vacuum and buchner's a lot, so there are a couple things I might offer.
    1) The thing on the top held by the hair band really serves no purpose. In fact I might suggest it's counter productive because the vacuum under is working against a closed top. Leaving the top open is better for operation.
    2) You might consider the ceramic funnel and put the hash on the ash-less qualitative filter and you don't have to wrestle with the glass frit. It would be easier and you can get larger flat surface area.
    3) Concerning the "vapor trap," it's called a "cold trap." The primary use of a cold trap is to protect the pump from sucking vapor that will ruin the pump long term. What you mentioned about the risk of oil creeping through the lines into the beaker can be eliminated very easily. That will ONLY happen if you turn the pump off and the beaker is still under negative pressure, it can suck oil out of the case into the beaker. What you are running will most likely not have that positioning. To be careful and eliminate the risk 100% simply keep the pump running the whole time while it is hooked to the beaker and remove the hose from the port. It's impossible of oil to creep while vac is running or under ambient pressure.

      Without the top you would have less negative pressure, the vacuum is going to take the path of least resistance…… the top with the tiny hole creates a vacuum chamber lowering your atmospheric pressure which is what you want to suck the fluid out faster and more efficient!
      Great info on the pump!!! I’ll have to check out the ceramic funnel . As for the ashless qualitative filters I’d be concerned with the material getting stuck I’d go with a 25 micron screen

    • @joem3358
      @joem3358 3 месяца назад +3

      The foil hampers operation. Negative pressure or vacuum is needed below the filter. The difference in pressure between atmospheric and the vac under the funnel is what pulls liquid through. Adding the foil reduces the atmospheric pressure above the filter. It DOESN'T increase it.

    Great interview Shango!
    In the theme of keeping this low cost anyone wanting to try this should buy the glass and rent the vacuum pump if on a budget.
    In the USA large chain auto parts stores (think O'Rileys, auto zone, pep boys, etc) have loaner vacuum pumps for servicing a car's A/C. To "rent" they charge a credit card for the amount of the pump and as long as you return it by a set date you will get a 100% refund.
    Hope this helps someone! Stay irie everybody ✌️

    Just before I collect the bubble hash off of the bubble bag, I hold a folded up paper towel on the bottom of the screen. That takes a ton of water out. I drop it onto my 25 mic screen that is sitting on a paper towel. Then in 1-3 minutes, I can shave it with a cold butter knife into tiny pieces. I love buying equipment though, so I may be trying this.

      We don't recommend anything paper-based like funnel filter screen or coffee filters. The hash will often stick to it and peel off on the hash when you remove it. Like Ty says in the video, his best recommendation is a 37 micron rosin screen. Flawless. Happy hashing! 👍

    • @CraftingwithIBC

      @@ShangoLos You can cut the 25 micron nylon mesh to the same size as the funnel and lay it as a boundry. If it lays flat you will have better vac pull which will pull more water.

      They don't pull as deep of a vacuum, but look into oil-less diaphragm pumps, they are available relatively cheaply now, but you do get whht you pay for. I don't have an easy source of Dry Ice nearby to use in a cold trap and you will either use a lot of oil changing it after every use or kill the pump if you don't.

  • @printingwithpeek4897
    @printingwithpeek4897 Год назад +2

    While this is a smart idea, the cost of a freeze dryer is minimal if you're doing decent sized runs of hash. The biggest thing to me more than anything when it comes to drying out the hash before pressing rosin, is the fact that it's not just a vacuum that is created but rather its the fact that the moisture and water is being evacuated at a lower pressure, there by preserving more terpenes and actually making a cleaner product. I think what needs to really happen is that there needs to be a vacuum assisted bubble hash method where the hash is actually filtered through fritted glass or something similar, and then you can take those screens out and freeze dry those. If that happened, the amount of processing that is required to sift and filter the screen drops dramatically while also drying off the material faster.
