Feedback for 0.5: Weapon changes are great, looking forward to it, DR being applicable to mental too is great, Heavy Armour was also noted by our group to be really, really strong, so glad that's been nerfed a tad, to be honest, might being so strong and DR being so strong, maybe the down to just +1 is a good idea but we'll see. Two main things the are racking me with DC20, that seem to be remaining in 0.5 First is the initiative check system, we actually dropped it completely and just use Awareness now, it was confusing, taking too long and causing arguments. Second is manoeuvres, put simply, getting all of them at level 1 is too much information, it's like playing a spell caster with all spell prepared all the time. We reduced this to you have a number = CM+Prime, so 4 at level 1 (switchable on full rest if needed), and everyone preferred this, including the players of martial characters. Basically, as written in 0.4/0.5 it made every martial character feel too similar since 80% of their abilities were the same, and it increased the barrier to entry massively, whilst also giving people decision paralysis in combat. We ran 2 sessions of 0.4 with all manoeuvres and we had people either just choosing to only use 1 or 2, or in session 2, avoiding martial characters completely since you already get a lot of features at level 1 compared to other systems. Anyway, aside from the two specific things noted above, looking forward to trying the new changes and continuing with testing this further :)
Coach will likely get back to you, but these issues have been brought up and are being looked into. I can see how maneuvers appear daunting. I personally just chose 3-4 I was most likely to use. No extra rules or mechanics necessary. There was a huge conversation and a survey for Metalic Dragon Patrons regarding initiative. I may suggest to Coach having Awareness be the base option and the Skill Check version be an alternative for Advanced tables. Great input! Thanks!
I love this feedback! Also beacuse BOTH of these issues are on the docket for 0.6 and under review 100%. Glad to see I am targeting things that are legitimate areas for lots of people :)
Since you mentioned multiclassing and stamina regeneration so much in this video, this feels like as good a place as any for this question. If a Spellcaster multiclasses into a Martial class and gets Stamina from the Multiclass Martial Mastery Feature, how do they regain that Stamina? I dont see it mentioned in the feature. Do they get Stamina back in the same method that the class they multiclassed into regains it (eg. Maneuvers for Fighter, Heavy Hits for Barbarian, etc.) or are they limited to the universal Stamina regeneration methods, like converting 2 AP to 1 SP, or just regaining it out of combat? Thanks so much, having a lot of fun with DC20!
I jumped on the 0.4 Alpha in early November from Treantmonk’s video and have been loving these video updates! I have a long drive Tuesday nights so I could stay tuned for the whole live stream every week. I’m so stoked to look through these options and to get a one shot ready during the winter break for my regular table! We’re currently playing through PF2e’s Abomination Vaults and loving it, so I’ve been secretly converting that adventure to DC20 rules as I go so we might be able to speed run some of the highlights after we finish using DC20 mechanics
Loving all the options for the Lineage system! Time to rope in all my friends to try it out. Also a small detail but your PDFs are an absolute joy to navigate. Very well optimized and properly linked throughout, much appreciated!
Hey Allen, love what you’re doing with DC20 and excited to see it coming along! One thought I had while listening to the video is that the longbow could feel more unique vs the crossbow and I think it’s a little too powerful when compared to the crossbow as most of the time, a ranged character is going to be making attacks at 10ft away or greater. What if the bow allowed you to spend an additional action point to draw the bow back further and take your time with your aim to add advantage and more damage or something like that? Also, a ridiculous fantasy trope is the multiple arrows shot at a time and perhaps a bow could do that at closer ranges? Lastly, I think adding different types of arrow heads is always something that sounds super fun, but I haven’t seen fleshed out much before. I could imagine blunt arrows for staggering effects, barbed arrows for disadvantage or slowed effects, poison arrows, exploding arrows, homing arrows, and magical elemental arrows. I’m sure there is more you could come up with if that idea sounds cool to you. Anyways, super excited to use the finished product and best of luck with all the hard work ahead of you, you’re doing a great job! 👍🏻
It would be pretty cool to give archers a choice, but I would keep it to bodkin, which gives +1 to hit, and broad arrow, which gives +1 to damage. But magic arrows of all sorts should be common: flame, freeze, lightning, knockdown, etc.
19:20 Speaking of shields, do shields have any unique effects or traits that you can do with them like the weapons? Cause one of my favorite rules I found for my 5e games is sacrificing a shield on a critical hit against you to negate the critical hit.
Currently no, Martials have a LOT of nice things right now, so I am focusing on ranged martials and spellcasters currently, but I do have ideas and notes for that :)
Just finished reading ancestry traits. They are awesome. I love the flavor you gave all ancestries and the flexibility of having expanded traits is great.
I bought the Alpha test to support your project. Idea 💡 Physical saves use the better of might or agility. Mental saves use the better of intelligence or charismas. 💡 Why stop there? How about willpower saves being resisted by might or charisma? Reflex saves resisted by best of intelligence or agility? One thing about D&D that never felt right was how wisdom based fear checks meant that bookish characters were more courageous than martial characters. Also A greater variety of saves opens up a greater variety of unique spells.
Looking forward to playing 0.5! I was supposed to do The Hunted one shot with friends during 0.4 but the get-together got postponed. Looking forward to playing it in 0.5!
I just found this channel and got a hold of the DC20 alpha. I was a bit skeptical, thinking it was one of a now host of games that are basically tweaks to 5e. I was wrong--this is genuinely innovative and interesting. I'm on board.
Weapon balancing thoughts: daggers/1 dmg weapons allowing 2 strikes for 2ap starting at 1st level. Then 3 strikes if you have dual weapon fighting. 2dmg weapons 2/2 with dual weapon fighting. Then having the 4dmg weapons being 1 strikes for 2ap. I think this will increase the appeal for rogues using daggers because you have extra chances to get heavy and brutal strikes.
Hey Coach! These changes seem really great, and DC20 has been propelled to the top of my “most excited new ttrpgs” list. I do have a question as someone that is a forever GM, can you say anything about how you intend to make the game easier to run as a GM compared to something like 5e? Are monsters going to be easier to balance and have a challenge rating that is accurate? Are monster building guidelines going to be simple to understand? I think you’re doing something really awesome here. Just a raw refinement of all d20 fantasy games before you, and I love it so far.
I will 100% say DC20 is easier to run (for too many reasons to get into in the comments section) but monsters will be SO easy to both tweak and create!
@@TheDungeonCoach wow thank you for the response! This makes me even more excited! I love making my own monsters so that’s a really big deal to me. I just watched the full Q&A livestream and your energy and passion for the game is infectious, and I know this is going to be a fantastic release.
O.6 Hype woow Thank you for the psion update as somane who played one for 20+ hours i am soo happy with them Love the spice on the cleric as well Coach this is a amazimg update its soo good that i alredy want more looking forward too new clases and more encesteries untill then ill be playing dc20 thank you for all the work and love you put in this game ❤ Also maby instead of considering lowering havy armor too plus 1pd maby you could consider buffing light armor too 2pd
Don't forget that if a dagger does 1 damage and a heavy weapon does 4, that's 4x the dagger. BUT if the dagger does 2 damage and the heavy weapon does 5, that only 2.5x the damage. You'd need to raise HP slightly all around, but it could solve lopsidedness. It works for spell points too: if a 1st-level spell costs 2 points and a 4th-level spell costs 5, then you can't trade a 4th-level spell for 4 1st-level spells. (Casting a spell costs 1 point for "investment" plus the level of the spell.)
I haven’t playtest yet but it seems like taking a talent from a spell caster as a martial or vice versa gives you so much more than a talent as a martial from a martial or from a caster as a caster you get the talent and nothing else but you get a bunch else when getting a talent from the opposite. I could be wrong since I haven’t played but it seems odd
Is the changelog going to get its own webpage somewhere/is it a separate page on the new pdf? I printed out the 0.4 and just putting a sticker and writing in the errata would be way easier for me
The prime variant is cool but it naturally disadvantages the players who opt to do that and I don't think that is mitigated by the flexibility. Could there be something added to the "pro" column for sacrificing having your prime as high as it otherwise could be?
My guys all loved the Alpha we tested out and we were excited to try out the .5. Waiting for the project to go into a backer status so we could go in on it! If we already bought the .4 when should we expect the .5 update in our email?
Ancestries are in a really confusing location. Tucked away st the end of the multiclass and prestige section. It could probably be moved to a more obvious spot, i had to do some searching in the pdf to find it.
I get one of the points of DC20 is keeping the dice simple, but what are your thoughts on 2d10, or even d8+d12? Puts a little more emphasis on player stats, and less on the dice result. Each +1 means a lot more vs 1d20. Also with d8+d12, you get to roll my favorite dice (d12) more, and every set of dice has those two. To roll 2d10, you have to use the percentile dice, or buy two sets of dice. Could also open the doors for a whole new style of Advantage, rerolling just one dice, or both. Maybe a potential alt ruleset? EDIT: Ive done some math on how the three play out, gonna run an analysis on like... how advantage would work potentially some point in the next few days. Id be happy to send you my findings! Might tickle your mathematics background a bit lol
I am always open to feedback on pretty much ALL of the rules in the game. But I will say the one fundamental principal that I cannot see myself chaning is a D20, this system is 100% going to be based on a d20, I can say that much. So I hope that doesnt upset you, but yea math always interests me, and I have crunched a TON on how ADV / DisADV will work stacking up
@TheDungeonCoach thats what I figured you'd say, the multiple dice thing has been my latest rabbit hole I've been going down. Super interesting to think about, love the 0.5 changes btw! I'm excited to see how the weapons continue toevolve! I'm excited to play around witg stronger base damage for a 4 or 5 stat requirement, it feels so open and easy to homebrew for once you get the hang of the balance. And with how heavy/brutal hits work, you could make a 4 base damage weapon, with a -3 to hit, effectively making it closer to a more inaccurate 3 damage weapon.
Is it possible to get the notion document you are using? I love Notion and how easy it makes accessing things and organizing them much more than a pdf.

Uhm... 3,1,0,-2 plus 2? Maybe I'm missing something but... Isn't it simpler to just say: "Assign a total of 4 points in your Attributes. No Attribute can be higher than 3 or lower than -2. (Any negative point assigned to an Attribute can be used to increase another Attribute by the same amount)"?

I believe it says ten SPACES. Each space is worth about 5 feet, so it's more like 50+ feet away to use the bow's ability.

This is definitely a "me" problem, not a real issue, but I'm so distracted by a little black dot on your nose in this video 😂
I literally have a makeup pen for exactly these moments... and I still have not unpacked it from the move! You are so right lol!
I just bought it today and skimmed through it, noticed the +5 on the sword, should that still be there?
Also I think agility should be your initiative mod. It's way simpler than the current way, also (and more importantly) it fits the fantasy nicely. Quick nimble characters should feel fast
I am curious, are there rules for the two-handed use of all weapons? It's a IRL fact that you can increase the impact of almost every weapon with two hands, roughly by 50%. That goes for daggers, maces, sticks and so on. Only exeption would be flails or other free hanging weapons as they bounce of the target after impact.
