      Chris I said it on your analysis video and I'll say it again: I went out and bought the available DC20 material immediately after watching your video. I have kept an eye on Allan's stuff for years, sometimes implementing basic ideas he outlines in his videos (counterspell, resting system), and often buying the supplements which feature them in detail to get a bigger picture (level up perks, additional scaling cantrips and spells, etc). I was skeptical about a new system, but between his videos and your deep dive, I was sold. I think you have given Allan a tremendous gift with your lengthy, detailed commentary, and as the communities merge, I believe that will pay wonderful dividends for you as well. So thanks for that. 🙂

  • @jacobtamisari8570
    @jacobtamisari8570 9 месяцев назад +28

    The flexibility of character creation gets me so excited. I have had the idea of a strength based sorcerer character who physically rips magic from the multiverse to throw at enemies for ages, but you simply cannot do that in 5E. But in DC20, it seems not only doable, but easy and encouraged. I'm honestly thinking that when it gets fully released, DC20 might become my default fantasy ttrpg system over 5E. It looks like it has all the crunch I like form 5, with none of the weird goofiness and odd rulings. Can't wait to see how it goes from here.

    • @storkfletcher821
      @storkfletcher821 9 месяцев назад +3

      It's an interesting take for sure. I'm curious what the mental attributes have to balance them with the physical attributes being the source of HP, which is obviously one of the most important resources in the game. It wouldn't feel quite right if going for a physical based caster was the optimal play.

  • @sspectre8217
    @sspectre8217 9 месяцев назад +10

    Trentmonk did provide a criticism that I agree with, which is general physical and mental checks and modifiers that discourages making a character that focuses on STR and DEX or INT and CHA since you only have 2 high stats in DC20, or at least at the start.

  • @FireallyXTheories
    @FireallyXTheories 9 месяцев назад +6

    The biggest thing I can say is distill the focus of the RPG down and advocate for that. Like MCDM is cinematic and tactical. That's what I look for in DnD so that system's perfect for my table and not so much for another. Distilling it down helps you reach core audiences who know nothing about the game a little easier. DnD is what I'd call tactical jack of all trades, does a bit of everything leaning more into combat with a battlemap being intended and theatre of the mind combat taking a backseat. Advocate for what your game specializes in beyond just "simple" since most TTRPGs other than Pathfinder tend to air on the side of simplicity, especially your competitors in the market like Vagabond, Cloudbreaker Alliance, and MCDM
    Vagabond I'd say is tactical and customizable (IE you make your own spells that affect the battlemap how you want and class choices are how you interact with base combat systems)
    Cloudbreaker is Imaginative tension and release. It's built for theatre of the mind and makes any interaction (combat, exploration, or social doesn't matter) about being tense and releasing the pressure or watching it fire into chaos
    My guess so far is DC20 is tactical and versitile. You can get anything to do anything really. Strength caster, int fighter, charisma monk, etc. The rest centers on the action point economy and being able to swiss army knife through exploration and social encounters afaik.
    The second biggest thing I can say is: Online tools. This is why DnD is so successful. Being able to look anything up with 5etools or DnDBeyond or native to Foundry/Roll20, etc is massive to keeping the game pace, cutting prep time down, and letting players get through level ups at the table (and at my table that includes writing down the BIG things about spellcasting like damage, damage type, and the save required so we don't have to think about looking those things up in the future). See what you can do in this way, making a Notion wiki is a great way to handle this since it'd be up to date with your latest versions and you can include changelogs. You'll be able to filter spells out by lists, tags, damage types, etc and it'll make picking those and other such things out much smoother and make it an easier experience for everyone at the table physically or digitally.

    I love DnD and Pathfinder but there is so much I don't love as well. DC20 addresses so many of my complaints about these games in the presentation of itself as it's own product separate from comparison. With the Stamina and Mana system, Action Points, Evolvable Spells, Combat Maneuvers, etc... You've added more creativity in a streamlined way without the bloat the usually comes with additional features of a game system. You bring so much freshness to the ttrpg space with you game. This is why I say that your product itself is separate from comparison. It really stands on its own in a unique and beautiful way. I can't wait to see your finished product!

    If the only edition of D&D you have played is 5e than you don't have a clue what the foundation of D&D really is. D&D has existed since 1974 and 5e is a very limited, skewed version of what made D&D really great. So challenge yourself to broaden your horizon and play campaigns of previous editions. And definitely don't think Pathfinder 2e is an example of D&D. It is NOT.
    Also, if you want to be a better game designer, learn from other designs and read RPGs that aren't D&D. If you want a greater knowledge base of Roleplaying Games than you have limited yourself by only staying in the D&D 5e fantasy paradigm. It's always good to have a broader perspective of knowledge by learning from other people and paradigms that are different from yours. You will get better.

    I would ask you to consider making spells in a printable form the size of a standard playing card. (Just like Magic the Gathering) 9 such cards fit on an A4 page. I know that 5e has that, but not as base element.
    Imagine a wild magic sorcerer who can, as some kind of special metamagic ability, discard all of his spells in a form of cards, shuffle them with the rest of his spell pool, and draw the same number of spells.

    I posted about this on Treantmonk's vid and I feel it might not be bad to post it here as well incase you see it. I agree with Treantmonk that the generic Physical and Mental saves are easily exploitable as they are, however I disagree with him on removing them entirely. I believe that they can still serve their purpose, but the math has to change a little. Instead of them being the highest of the 2 saves that they bracket, make them the average of the 2 saves. For Example, if you Might Save is a 2 and your Agility Save is a 0, your Physical Save is a 1. This should stop the overt min/max of it while allowing for people who really want their character to specialize in a certain style (the classic all brawn barbarian for example).

    Did you consider doing more then 4 attributes?
    I got inspired by your system to work on my own (just to get things from my head onto paper so I don't keep thinking about it) but I didn't feel satisfied with only 4 attributes. So I came up with the following 6:
    Physical: Might, Agility
    Mental: Spirit, Knowledge
    Prescence: Charisma, Intuition
    Grid save = Physical
    Mental save = Mental
    Will save = Prescence
    I don't have a proficiency bonus, so the save is just the sum of the 2 modifiers.
    I definitely wanted my game to be a bit more complicated so I needed more attributes then 4, but I keep the same concept of linking attributes together and saying goodbye to constitution.
    Might, Agility and Charisma are straight forward but with some tweaks of course.
    Spirit is just the attribute name I choose for magic related stuff. So this generally the spell casting modifier for most classes, but you can rename it to whatever you like.
    Instead of saying everyone has 4 AP, I use intuition where intuition is your initiative modifier and the amount of AP you have. (I make my system around this, this is not going to work for majority of systems, but if you want to adept it to other systems maybe have it just say how many reactions one has)
    And knowledge is kind of my proficiency bonus, but much more then that. For example the more knowledgeable you are with a certain weapon type the more effects it has. How I made this is not as straight forward, but I like it.

    I haven't read for the rules, is there ritual type effects for casting spells? i.e. spend an additional minute/10 minutes/1 hour to reduce the spell cost by X or have additional spell casters help cast the spell to reduce the spell cost by X. I would think that this would bake in the out of combat benefits for spellcasters.

    One of my favorite TTRPG system that made tanking a core part of the loop is the Log Horizon Table-Talk RPG, where high power moves or tank-like actions added a certain amount of "Hate" to a character, while weaker options generally lowered your Hate counter.
    Enemies then unlocked powerful abilities the higher your Hate counter was, eventually even focusing solely on a character if your Hate reached a certain threshold.

    I love how cinematic stamina is. You use your stamina to do an impressive maneuver, but your character leaves it a bit winded. You might take some hits, but then you regain your bearings after a success and have more energy. Beautiful mechanic. Makes me excited to play with it.

    Per the mana discussion: I think it would be kind of cool to have a certain terrain elements that would be able to slowly regain mana, like being able to pull magic essence from around you. Or maybe different types of spell casters pull mana "drips" from other areas. Like a druid might be able to pull from nature, or a cleric pulls mana from a shrine or holy symbol.

    My RUclips algorithm had counted you out so I didn't get any suggestions - but I watch Treantmonk and I got really curious and I was blown away - you (and he in that video) touch on so many important things to make things cooler, easier and much more fun. I remember your homebrews being cool but didn't really try them out, but man am I excited for this game!
    Now it's a matter of awaiting release or peeking into beta/alpha - and see if my players would like it too. It feels like OneD&D dropped the ball with the loads of reverted changes and existing flaws in 5e; so right now I am 100% fixed on DC20 and MCDM's product - which you seem to share some of the genius fixes with ;)

    I'd love to see the Monk class' use of stamina (I assume it would be stamina) as I've always wanted to build a Jackie Chan style monk but it was never even close to optimal. It sounds like it would be possible in a system like this.

    I love the ideas I heard, the system sounds amazing, I have but one feedback: I am a veteran DM, and the main reason I always give up on other systems and going back to DnD is the monster manual.
    Creating all monsters for a campaign or adapting monsters and not having a clear way to aproximate challenges (although CR is busted, it’s busted in a way I’m familiar with) is a huge turndown for me.
    The 3 books policy from wotc is what keeps me hooked, please have all 3 in DC20, I’ll surely try the switch in that case

    I hope the DC20 Fighter has a spellblade subclass. I always liked Eldritch Knight, but 5e's version never really felt like a true gish. It was more like a Fighter that can cast Shield and sometimes a weak Magic Missile.

    I watched the Treantmonk video 2 days ago which was my real introduction to DC20. I saw you talk about it earlier this year but didn't stay tuned in to it. Now that I watched the Treantmonk video, I'm very...VERY intrigued on your DC20 system. I bought the Alpha, subscribed to your channel and am patiently waiting for the kickstarter. You have Treantmonk to thank for that.

    Just discovering your system from Treantmonk! I am already setting mo ey aside for an all-in if you are planning on doing some crowdfunding at some point. I am already super excited for this to be in its final form.
    I have been looking at multiple other systems besides 5E, such as Blades in the Dark, Cypher System, and other random systems but hearing about DC20 has made me instantly less interested in all those others. Great job, sir!
    I am now subscribed, eagerly awaiting more news, and already really impressed with the system foundations and hearing your passion for the DC20 project as a whole.

    So Currently I'm working on a 3rd party module with 5e compatibility. Right now I have it just ready for that system but once I have it up on kickstarter I plan on having a version for Pathfinder 2e made as a stretch goal. I would love to get with you about making a version compatible with DC20. Would you be interested in working on that?

    I haven't read through the document yet so I'm not sure if this is even a relevant concern or not
    But what about spells like Silvery Barbs or Counterspell? Is there an equivalent in D20? How does it work in relation to 4 potential reactions per round?
    Like can a party member potentially "give up their turn" to counterspell an enemy 4 times?

    • @TheDungeonCoach
      @TheDungeonCoach  9 месяцев назад +2

      Spell duels is my version of counter spell (I have a full video on that)
      Silvery Bards is a TRASH spell and there will never be anything like that on dc20 💜

    I was intrigued by the mechanics discussion that Treantmonk posted on his channel, but I wasn't really sold until you mentioned that you wanted to actually allow people to Tank. A system that allows me to fill my favorite party function without requiring the DM to pity target me has my rapt attention.

    I very much agree with people who mention online tools. My son and his friends are not that good at crunching but they loooove our Pathfinder 2e game in good part because of Pathbuilder and Archive of Nethys.
    I never expected football players to spend hours huddled in front of a PC, building their characters together but that's exactly what happened.
    Everything is on AoN, and Pathbuilder makes it fun and easy to wrap your head around it all.
    I showed Treantmonk's video to my son and he was as thrilled as I was. If DC20 can offer anything like this, it'll be a shoo-in at our table. It might still become our main anyway, but that'll be a harder sell.

    Hi!
    I watched the Treantmonk video and I thought it was awesome! It's made me very excited about your game!
    I had some mechanical thoughts I wanted to throw out there, entirely based on that video, for you to consider
    1) Damage.
    Treantmonk mentioned there was a big discrepancy between 1 damage & 4 damage weapons (x4), and you were considering making the range smaller.
    One thing I would consider is shifting the damage numbers up by 1 (whatever you do with the range)...sure you would have to look at adjusting HP slightly, but a 2-damage weapon compared to a 5-damage weapon is only x2.5 as much.
    Alternatively combined with the smaller range a 4-damage weapon is twice as effective as a 2-damage weapon, vs 1-damage to 3-damage being three times as effective.
    It just makes the scaling easier to balance...and opens up the design space for 1 damage effects existing (1 damage on a miss, etc.) for very minor things (½ the damage of the weaker combat hit)
    If you did this I would expect hit points would need to be increased by 20% to 50%. Anyway do think about it.
    2) Saving throws
    Treantmonk mentioned that having 2 types of saves made an optimal way of placing your stats.
    To avoid this you could still have 2 save types, but simply have one save based on your prime attribute, and the other save always 3 points worse. Then you can have 2 saves, but there isn't an optional way of building your character.
    Alternatively, you could just have one save bonus for all saves, but gain advantage on the type keyed off of your prime attribute (simpler, but perhaps a greater discrepancy)

    The only thing is initiative. We have 3 action system but you can take them at any point in the round and at the top of the round it all resets. It makes combat fast because whoever knows what they want to do first, goes first.
