Tsurinoya Genius & Kuying Teton: Timeless Magic of a Winter BFS Trip

  • I snuck out for an hour on a winter afternoon with my Affordable Ultralight Bait Finesse System gear to chase little fish on a small river (and got a surprise!). There's a deep dive on this remarkable reel here: fishingdiscove...
    The Tsurinoya Genius is an updated and improved evolution of the Dark Wolf Ultra platform. For my fishing on rivers and streams, the 8:1 gear ratio is a real bonus compared to the DWU at 7:1. Plus, the deliberate switch to an adjustable "static by design" magnetic braking system means you don't need to worry about upgrading the magnets.
    Instead, you can just take this reel out of the box, strap it onto your rod and it is very capable of throwing lures down to around 1g (which is insane for an affordable baitcasting reel).
    Pairing it with the ultra sensitive, super-ultra light Kuying Teton TTC510S 0.3g - 3g rod makes it a joy to use with small lures. This is a fast action rod (in other words much of the bend happens in the tip) and the excellent quality toray carbon blank transmits everything right to your hand. In the cold water of a small stream, it lets you feel your way across pebble and sand as well as the often very shy bites you expect during winter.
    I hope you enjoy this no-frills, ride-along Vlog that aims to capture the feeling of stealing a fishing trip when you really should be doing other things...
    Paul

      Cheers Neil - nothing flashy in this one; just a bit of a personal Vlog on a cheap camera and some of my photos. Sounds like you have your own little slice of heaven on the Kennet there too. Paul

    Just picked this rod up and it’s wowed me. I think my one gripe with it is probably the handle… for whatever reason I really dislike split grips for our short rods and there’s not much point to them imho… the trigger is also a tad short and I find my pointer finger slipping. Ah well… a small gripe for a phenomenal rod! Cheers Paul!

      It's strange as I kind of almost forget about the handle on this rod. I can see how it could be off-putting; yet the whole thing is such a wisp of a wand that I kind of feel like I'm palming the reel...and, with the trigger grip, that's basically me holding the rod. So, the reel is kind of the rod grip...or the rod tip is an extension of the reel or something like that. Either way you can be a full on sniper with small baits with just a tiny movement of your casting hand.

    Thanks for sharing. I have the exact same rod and Tsurinoya Dark Wolf Ultra. It's a well-compatible combo.

    The tsurinoya genius surprised me had been using the dark wolf ultra and loving it to the more you use the genius the better it gets is a step up from the dark wolf ultra I'd say a smidge better a little smoother the side plate definitely easier to open been using it along side my pro flex 2 rod can't fault it nice vid

    Hey Paul. Good fishing! I don’t understand one thing, why would Tsurinoye release a copy of the Black Wolf? In the latest version of the Black Wolf, in fact, only linear brakes remained. Well, yes, an 8: 1 transmission was added.
    🙄🙄🙄

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  Год назад +1

      Hey Staryi, between the Elf (6.4:1) and the Genius (8:1) gear options there is a very good reason and opportunity for people to choose whichever of the three reels suits them (and their fishing) best. Also, I found that the bearings performed better out of the box when casting a 1-g Trout Magnet lure compared to the Dark Wolf Ultra. With the side-plate brakes, you definitely have an assurance that you won't need to modify the brakes and I think Tsurinoya wanted to get away from having a "dynamic" brake mechanism that was deliberately disabled at the factory by locking the moving parts in place in order to make it work without needing aftermarket magnets adding by the customer. For me, since the spool is a small diameter, the 8:1 gear ratio is a significant advantage when casting upstream and then retrieving the lure faster than the pace of the current (as well as for keeping up with fish if they run towards me). With all that said, the DWU was certainly an astonishing achievement and can still be a very, very good buy - especially if you are happy to tinker a bit and either upgrade the bearings with ceramic hybrids or clean and lube the factory-fitted bearings. Paul.

    I have been looking at this reel for a long time. I am torn between this reel and the Haibo Air Arise. I think both are am to throw a trout magnet out the box without a bearing upgrade. Have you had time to compare the two? Another RUclipsr picked the Haibo. Price difference is double for the Haibo currently.

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  Год назад

      I've not personally tried the Haibo Arise Air yet - however I trust Peter's opinion from the BFS fishing channel and I know he feels it's in a higher quality class than the Genius and other DWU variants. I think the main thing is what you want to spend and then what you get for your money. If you're looking to spend less but still get great performance then the Genius or the Soloking Acura are great options. Out of the box with zero modifications, the best casting reel for trout magnets at any price (and still much less than the cheapest Japanese reel capable of throwing a trout magnet well) is the Qingyu Kingfisher Flight Feather (currently part of the Aliexpress summer sale I think): ruclips.net/video/vNQ83S7Xbr0/видео.html

      @@FishingDiscoveries Yeah I liked hearing BFS Fishing Channel's opinion on the Haibo. I think from the price that would be the highest I could go. The Kingfisher looks awesome but that over $185 even on sale is a bit too much....I still don't have a rod yet. Maybe I will just buy as time goes on...lol. I have been picking the brains of as many BFS anglers as I can.

    Hi Paul, I have the Teton rod and I’ve just ordered the genius, can’t wait to pair them up! Counting down the days till the trout season. Can I ask what line you are using on the reel to cast such light weights? Tight lines

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  Год назад +1

      Hi D - on this rig I'm simply using 30-m of 4lb clear fluorocarbon, straight through from the spool to the lure. In this case it is Berkley Trilene - very affordable and works well for this kind of thing.

      Brian, this one is the 0.3 to 3g Teton (5'10"). I think the total weight of the lure and homemade jig hook is somewhere around 1.7g (definitely heavier than a trout magnet). I'll have to put one on the scales...
