enjoy your Vidos. It does not matter how much your kayak or boat cost either you catch fish or you don't. Best year I ever had tournament fishing went from a big bass boat to smaller aluminum bass boat . I fished instead of running around. And on live scope still got to make them bite.

I’ve done ok against people using a fish finder when I didn’t have a working one. Placed 3rd against 20-22 and 5th against 40+ anglers. Also like you mentioned the other forms of sonar (SI/DI/2D) are typically playing a bigger part. Even when I did have one before that most of the fish I caught were not marked. I did recently upsize my humminbird Helix and gained SI so I still appreciate the effectiveness of electronics. I think your best value is when you start to get into side imaging and that the extra ~2000 for live brings much less value for what your paying. I do think more entry level tournaments would be a great idea.
Ill be honest, I would LOVE to be able to upgrade my rig! About 4 years now i have been fishing from my sundolphin boss 12 that is HEAVILY modified lol. But honestly if i had the money for a new rig i would rather spend it upgrading the one i have. I so badly want spot lock!!!!
@@kristinefischer2289 riht now iam running a haswing transom mounted motor (65#) and iam happy with it for point a to b. I do a lot of crappie fishing, spot lock would be so much easier than trying to anchor on top of a brush pile Guess i havnt shed my bass boat days. I want a strong motor on back and a front motor for maneuvering lol.
Man she need more likes. We need to help her get more reviews. Her content is amazing. IT just blows my mind she don't have more followers and likes. Everybody let's get her to millions followers...
I get it everyone starts somewhere. I’m doing monthly tournaments, I’m on my second month. I don’t care . Because one day when I’m as good as you , you better believe I’m going to be rigged out. Still love seeing my name on that board. I have a graph. But not good at it I still love netting my fish . You rock!
You made a lot of great points. There are always going to be critics of new technology, regardless of what it is. New technology exists because of newly acquired knowledge, and once that knowledge is out there it becomes public knowledge so that technology is not going away. Regarding the cost of a fully loaded kayak, $20,000 is very cheap relative to a $100,000 alternative. Granted, a kayak is not built to function like a bass boat, so it has its limitations. But a bass boat is not built to function like a kayak either, so bass boats have limitations too. Nice topic. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I've known people with spotlock, livescope, and every bell and whistle on an Ike Edition Hobie that can't fill a limit to save their lives. It's no different than a guy in an old ranger who can go out and spank a field of $100k new boats. The boat/kayak doesn't catch the fish. I don't even see a decent amount of my livescope bites. I use it largely to see the structure in front of me without having to run over it with the 2D sonar.
We have a dude down here in FL with a leaky Ascend with no electronics and no motor. He takes our money most of the time just cause he's that good around here. I get it with the national stuff though. Any advantage to cut down time to find fish is a plus in the bigger trails.
Perspective mode is a must for shallow(er) grass lakes. I just switched from forward to perspective and it’s helping eliminate water for me. LVS has never put a fish in the boat for me. But it has told me that there’s no fish in the area and to move on
I don’t fish tournaments, but staring at a a screen like you said is not my thing even a regular sounder Ill leave at home many times!? But the deal with live scopes and technology on the water is he fact they are being robbed of the experience. Few years those high school kids coming up will not be able to fish without livescope?? Have seen and know grown men that cannot build a fire? It is that type of thing. Spot on with the kayak thing.
I’m not one to leave comments, but I’ve been following you for a while now, and it’s your positive attitude and good nature that attracts me most. Keep up the good work!
Yep,well stated. Kristine, I'll take your casting and skipping ability over side scan or live scope any day. And you're right, fishing in shallow southern waters is less suited to using electronics.
My Helix 7 mega Imaging / 2D sonar is all I need on my kayak. The more stuff you add the more space it takes up. You start to feel squeezed in and then ain't no fun. By the way you're putting out great stuff.🎣
Recently retired from the FD. Would love to do what you do, just traveling and fishing. About to get my first kayak and start. Keep up the great videos.
The motor alone on the bass boats is $27,245. YIKES. I will stick with my fixer upper $200 Four Winns Candia. LOL I also have a Jonny Bass 100 I paid $700 new, a Haswing brushless trolling motor adapted to fit in the well $300, and a Lowrance HDS 9 Carbon, $800. I have about $200 more in mods including a Millenium seat and a set of outriggers. So total of $2000 and it will go anywhere including big water. I build my own lithium batteries and use them for many things not just the trolling motor.
I generally give zero effs about tournaments. Usually I'm only here for the muskie fishing. Having said that, at any given time I can go to a spot where I KNOW there's fish. I don't need electronics to tell me. But that doesn't necessarily mean I'll catch them.
The harder the fishing, the more advantage live scope is. After getting livescope, my winter fishing game has gone up exponentially. I can literally follow a school of fish or bait around and catch fish for hours.
I agree with you completely, I'm 72 and I'm getting ready to purchase my first kayak. I've done a lot of research and have decided to get a Nucanoe Unlimited with an electric motor and a few accessories, which will allow me to enjoy myself without overworking myself, and not having to worry about investing a fortune. Also, it weighs only 80 lbs. which will allow me to load to car top. I hope to be able to fish some of the local tournaments in my area. Kristine, I've been following you for a while and you've inspired me to start fishing again. Thank you so much!
Have you heard of a book called Who Moved the Cheese? I’d recommend reading it. Not very long but full of insight about the culture of change and how those who embrace change and expect change succeed. And those who lament change and avoid it have much less success. You have a great attitude!
I was looking for your video where you talk about your kayak and where you bring it to get professional wired. I just want everything to look clean with no wires showing. Any tips?
Livescope: You're right, it's not going away. I think it takes the sport out of fishing. You're also right, you'd better become proficient with it so you can be on an even playing field.
I've got a $1200 kayak I bought used for $700. No trolling motor, no peddle drive. Just me and a paddle. I've got $100 depth finder and only only 2 fishing poles, and I can promise you I enjoy my time on the water just as much as anybody else. The ONLY time I wish I had a little more is when I want to cross the lake to a new spot, or just make a big move in general. It takes me a little longer and I have to plan my day a little more to avoid moves like that. Other than that, I absolutely love kayak fishing. I've been at it for about 3 years now
Pressure, mismanagement and poorly run weigh-in tournaments are the main culprits. I’d like to see weigh and release become the norm but unfortunately it’s too expensive and the old school guys need their hero shot. I live on a world renowned bass lake and I’ve seen a lot of dead bass after tournaments, and unfortunately it’s all the bigger bass. Prime example is the spawn tournaments pulling fish off beds then running them across the lake to release. Only issue that I’ve seen with forward facing sonar is on crappie populations, guys are able to sit on a big school and hammer them. These fish are often kept as food, which I support but maybe not at the limits that are currently in place in many lakes.
I don't know if it's hurting fishing.....but it's definitely hurting me trying to get the funds together to build a new boat after the season. I currently don't have sponsorship but I'm not the type to go begging people for money so it's cool, and I don't ever come out of a season in the positive as far as winnings vs expenses. Luckily I got a 12k raise at work so I'm going to build about a 12k boat and likely sell it every season from now on so it's still got warranty value and I can be in a new one every year. I won't be able to get the best motor and battery or the best livescope screens, but I will definitely have an upgrade to what I have now which is a 2019 pro angler with no motor, no livescope, no 360 drive. This will be my first major tournament build kayak and I'm pretty pumped about it........The bright pink/purple/teal blue color scheme is going to stay!! Love your vids and love what you are doing. -Dave
These conflicts between those who have/use FFS and those who don’t are only beginning. Kayak bass tournaments are no different from boat tournaments, NASCAR, or any other sport I can think of. All started out with humble beginnings. Just a few people who love to fish, or go fast get together and try to organize a friendly competition. The number of competitors grows, the number of spectators grows, sponsors begin to get involved. The next thing anyone knows the friendly competition has grown into a multi headed monster nobody foresaw or has control over.
My Dad used to drag race and when we were hungry he would still find a way to do it and be successful with what he had and even win some money. If I've learned one thing in my very humble life, it is there is always a way! I love this video, your so right biut it all. I worked hard to save for my kayak and I hope one day I can have a place to keep it where I can add some bells on it and give some Kayak tournaments a try.
You are absolutely correct that right now the expensive kayak is not hurting the sport for the little guy, BUT, it may in the future. Back decades ago when I started fishing tournaments the minimum size boat you could use was a 14' and it need console steering, livewell and kill switch. Over time the same companies that made the bigger boats lobbied for changes to the rules. Soon the boats needed to be bigger and all this other stuff. Some of it can be attributed to safety, but I believe the same things will happen here. slowly the small entry level kayak will not be allowed in tournaments because the kayak companies do not make enough on those kayaks. Imagine 10 years from now when kayaks will be so crazy that nobody would be caught dead in a Hobie 360. Trust me the money the kayak companies invest now just gives them the power to suggest rule changes. Maybe it will take 15 years, who knows but it will happen. Don't matter to me, I will fish no matter what, just saying watch and see.
Didn’t Drew Gregory have to give in and put a motor on his kayak because they changed the rules of launch location that only benefits these people with these very heavy, rigged out kayaks? Where does it end? In the future they’ll have drones that will fly over head and show the location of every fish within a quarter mile of you. People will still say you need skill to get them in the boat lol. There should be different leagues and one should be no electronics and human power kayaks only.
The allure of kayak fishing was its an endurance sport. Like cycling, or bow hunting. You were evening the fight between fish and fisherman. I see it as the equivalent. That 20k kayak with a trolling motor is the same as the guy taking hormones before a cycling race, or hunting with a rifle over a bow. Yes you can do it, but no, it’s not the same sport anymore. They’re telling you to get a boat because you have a boat basically. Where is the endurance training to get where you need to get (watching the 200lb guy on a 80lb kayak clicking a remote isn’t it)? The guy that pedaled/paddled miles out is the real athlete. Where is the fishing experience being put to work (this one isn’t you, you out fish us all on our best day)? It’s not the same sport. I rather go out to compete with people that are hitting it naturally, going out with an even playing field. The price of the kayak is not the problem, it’s the motor you’re adding - it’s now a boat. How are we still calling a powered kayak a kayak?! That’s a boat 😂 kayak + motor = boat. Yeah the motor is super fun and makes it easier, but that defeats the reason I’m on a kayak! Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Let’s talk about kayaks like a professional road bike. Spend the money on a lighter rig, or upgrade the pedal drive, add clips for better efficiency while pedaling, endurance exercise to get where other fisherman can’t, how to fuel your body with not gas station food while you’re on the water. We don’t talk about that do we. People wouldn’t smirk when you say “fishing is a sport” if you started treating it like one. The argument that we should respect them because they’re good at it means let my boy Lance Armstrong race again, he was good too! 😂
And the increasing pressure on the resource as it gets easier and easier and there is more mortality on bass. What are we doing to sustain this hobby? Are we just killing fish to run up a scoreboard or are we putting something back into the resource? if nothing else, putting pressure on DNR's to improve habitat, stock fish, etc should coincide with the spread of this sport.
I'm going to start of saying I totally agree with everything you said on both subjects. I think as we move forward, we will see, like you said, the younger generation really do well with it, but I also feel that someplace along the line some of them will back away from it for other tactics. Not that it's going away, but they will see as just another tool and sometimes not quite the right tool for the job at hand on that day. From talking to some of the older guys local to me, they seen the same argument with flashers, early fish finders with a LCD readout, to this. It's just the next evolution in fishing electronics. Nothing more, nothing less. As for the 20,000 dollar kayaks hurting the sport. I think many folks see the end product and say "I can't do that" and not "what can I do over a period of time". What many folks need to remember is all those "high dollar rigs" started with a kayak that was between 1500-6000 tops with stuff added to them. Like eventually I want to get an Olde Town 106 pdl. That's the start, then part by part add to it when I can. You used Drew as an example, and I was watching him on BassU Kayak TV and he had next to nothing on his rig. So it's all in what you want to run.
Idk If I had it I'd probably used it but I'm just not sure it's good for the fisheries. Hopefully it won't have a longterm negative impact. There could theoretically come a point when the technology is too good? Correct? If we could just throw a dozen lures into water that would then go seek the fish and bring them back to us would that be too advanced?
I do not disagree with anything you said, I have a 70K bass boat that I fish tournaments out of however I still enjoy my kayak as much if not more. I find my self leaving the kayak tournaments scene because I like the no motor and find the fish attitude, The old grass roots I believe you take the motor away and the livescope the people winning with them will still win without them. Just for me at 60 I kayak fish for the simplicity and dont want to put that much money in my yak as I have my boat however I do feel its a competitive edge or why would folks have them? With entries fee going up and up I do not want to spend money knowing Im at a competitive disadvantage, Great video keep grinding!
Well said Christine, agree with you 100%. I love seeing the guys faces at Nationals, when my little garage built Bass boat, pair of 997 Humminbird finders, kicked their $100k boats butts. Would love to upgrade to Forward Facing Sonar, but life and finances say otherwise for now....keep up the good work 👏
As you said its a tool, its foolish not to use the best tools for a job. Iam a welder, i could weld with a battery and jumper cables. But i would be a fool to still do so when we have modern computer controlled machines now. Iam also old enough to remeber when each of the new techs came along in fish finders. Downscan was going to wreak fishing and should be banned sidescan was going to wreak fishing and should be banned All proved false as it will be proved false with ffs! Back in the 90's i entered into bass boat bass tournements. I started on a trail and fished they whole trail ina 14 foot semi v aluminium boat My live well was a icechest and a bilge pump, My tront trolling motor was a rear mount clamped to the front. Every event i placed in the money, made it into the champ and walked away aoy and took the grand prize of a 21 foot basscat. Tools! even the boat is just a tool! You HAVE to know hgow to use the tools you have to the best of your abilties. Fishing as with most in life starts in your mind!! just as you said! confidence is so key!
I remember hating people who had cell phones when i was in college...times are always changing. The last kayak tourney I competed in was won by an angler who broke his transducer the night before and fished blind (no depth). Tools are cool but not critical.
Amen Sister! To have the ability, of patience and mind set. To learn a tactic that you master. To make you a better angler. The person who want that taking away. Is to lazy to put in the work to compete with it.
At least in the pro’s they all have it. But in locals some do some don’t. And that takes away the skill level. Hold a tournament with no electronics then let’s see how many 50 lb bags they get.
Correct, if you listen to the video, you’d hear why. I still want to be competitive and build on my skills. That includes practicing techniques I’m not fond of
@FloridaKayakGuy For the same reason that traveling is illegal in basketball. It is a better sport vith for participation and for watching without it. There is definitely an equity issue as well. Not necessarily at the pro level but at the local level. I probably would never enter a tournament because fiahing is an eacape for me but even if i wanted to. Sport should (ideally) be a test of physical and mental attributes not of money spent. Maybe at the pro level this is the case but it isnt at the local level.
This is an excellent video and proves you’re extreme level of awesomeness. Bottom line it comes down to the angler. Electronics or not it’s still called “Fishing” and Not “Catching” so everyone has a chance to win.
Hobie pro anglers are 6k, Two graphs, livescope, motor, batteries, live scope mount, accessories- you’d be surprised ! They had several set up at the classic.
i fish some tournaments in ohio. i just have a simple old town sportsman. and a small graph. but it is pretty discouraging seeing these dude with 15k into the kayaks with livescope and can motor across the lake.
Kristine I’m a 63 year old angler who lives in a retirement resort. We have a small bass club and 11 lakes that we fish on. Now in my 30’s and 40’s I fish tournaments in Alabama and Tennessee. Livescope wasn’t even a dream back then. Then my job got in the way of fishing and I took 20 years off. I was in culture shock coming back in at the price of everything! And all the new technology blows my mind. My issue is this, we have two men who have live scope. They win all the tournaments and those of us who don’t have it just donate money. Is it fair to those who don’t have it to even fish. I do it for the thrill of catching them. I got a 7.2 largemouth from under a dock just last week without Livescope. But we keep loosing members because they say they don’t have a chance to win against the Livescope guys. Just your thoughts on this issue please!
My advice ? If guys feel they can’t win, stop fishing that trail and start one where you cannot use it. I see your point and it’s frustrating, but don’t penalize the guy who is operating in the rules and doing well, you know? I’d just stop fishing that club and start one with a no FFS rule

But honestly if i had the money for a new rig i would rather spend it upgrading the one i have. I so badly want spot lock!!!!
Spot lock would be cool, but I love my torqeedo and foot control steering ! Haha
@@kristinefischer2289 riht now iam running a haswing transom mounted motor (65#) and iam happy with it for point a to b.
I do a lot of crappie fishing, spot lock would be so much easier than trying to anchor on top of a brush pile
Guess i havnt shed my bass boat days.
You rock!
Also I paddle no peddle. Still love every minute on the water.
Great video
I just watched Das Boat on T V you was great
You made a lot of great points.
But it has told me that there’s no fish in the area and to move on
YEA! Going to try that
Can't wait for the next video. Love everything you said.
Thank you so much
I don’t fish tournaments, but staring at a a screen like you said is not my thing even a regular sounder Ill leave at home many times!? But the deal with live scopes and technology on the water is he fact they are being robbed of the experience. Few years those high school kids coming up will not be able to fish without livescope?? Have seen and know grown men that cannot build a fire? It is that type of thing. Spot on with the kayak thing.
That’s the only thing I really worry about, is the kids that are already born into a screen-obsessed world :(
I’m not one to leave comments, but I’ve been following you for a while now, and it’s your positive attitude and good nature that attracts me most.
Appreciate you Jim thank you!
Am I wrong in thinking that even on the national trails, most anglers kayak tournament rigs are typically well below 20K?
There are alot popping up in that range, but yes, I’d say most are around 10k with electronics etc
Good Stuff
Good video.
Yep. It can be an amazing tooo
Tool**
I agree with you completely, I'm 72 and I'm getting ready to purchase my first kayak. I've done a lot of research and have decided to get a Nucanoe Unlimited with an electric motor and a few accessories, which will allow me to enjoy myself without overworking myself, and not having to worry about investing a fortune. Also, it weighs only 80 lbs. which will allow me to load to car top. I hope to be able to fish some of the local tournaments in my area. Kristine, I've been following you for a while and you've inspired me to start fishing again. Thank you so much!
That’s awesome! My boyfriend fishing out of that yak and absolutely loves it! You’ve got a great set up and I hope you enjoy it!
@@Rbee-nz1ij Thank you, that's an excellent suggestion! I will do that!
I don’t tournament. You all do you. I’m good with it.
$20,000 Kayak WTF?!? 😳
I've been at it for about 3 years now
I'm like you. Three years in. Two poles (one for panfisg!). No electronics. A 16 acre lake. Like the bunny hill in skiing. But I'm getting there.
Mad respect, you are a great example for others to follow congrats and team USA
Thanks so much!!

This is one of the best videos you’ve made. When I saw the title I thought you were full of it, but I very much agree with everything you said.
Well said! I agree with your comments!
Very well said 👍🏻👍🏻. Excellent points made, as well as great advice about having the right attitude.
@@IndianaSmallmouth she kinda made it clear the goal is to sustain fisherman 💰
Yes! You should customize your yak to what fits YOUR fishing style !
to each their own. i bought a kayak for simplicity, no motor, no electronics, no peddles.
I’ve got one of those too
And I love it !!
@Randy Blaukat …. take that
Id rather look at the beautiful mother nature that im fishing in than look at the screen just like fishing video game 😂
That’s me too 😂
Idk If I had it I'd probably used it but I'm just not sure it's good for the fisheries. Hopefully it won't have a longterm negative impact. There could theoretically come a point when the technology is too good? Correct? If we could just throw a dozen lures into water that would then go seek the fish and bring them back to us would that be too advanced?
When the spinning reel came on the scene, there was talk that this new technology should be banned as it gave anglers an unfair advantage.
Exellent topic! I have such a tremendous amount of respect for you as a fisherman and as a person. A true class act!
It's not called. Fishing with a sonar or fish finder
Downscan was going to wreak fishing and should be banned
sidescan was going to wreak fishing and should be banned
All proved false as it will be proved false with ffs!
Back in the 90's i entered into bass boat bass tournements.
I started on a trail and fished they whole trail ina 14 foot semi v aluminium boat
My live well was a icechest and a bilge pump, My tront trolling motor was a rear mount clamped to the front.
Modern everything is hurting fishing unfortunately..
You nailed it! Love your positive mental attitude , a must in our sport.
At least in the pro’s they all have it. But in locals some do some don’t. And that takes away the skill level. Hold a tournament with no electronics then let’s see how many 50 lb bags they get.
Agree it would be much much tougher
95% of what we do in life is between the ears.
Truth
Love your attitude and perspectives. Great content and teaching as usual. God loves us
a lot.
Honestly a fully rigged top quality yak is 7k
They had 25k yaks at the classic 😬😬😬
...yah, but u still have it on your boat
Correct, if you listen to the video, you’d hear why. I still want to be competitive and build on my skills. That includes practicing techniques I’m not fond of
I agree you have to use the livescope but it isnt impossible that it is bannedby tournament organization similar to a-rigs. At least that is my hope
Honest question. Why do want it banned? It's not like only 5% of pro anglers can afford it. They all have it. So why should it be banned?
@FloridaKayakGuy For the same reason that traveling is illegal in basketball. It is a better sport vith for participation and for watching without it.
There is definitely an equity issue as well. Not necessarily at the pro level but at the local level. I probably would never enter a tournament because fiahing is an eacape for me but even if i wanted to. Sport should (ideally) be a test of physical and mental attributes not of money spent. Maybe at the pro level this is the case but it isnt at the local level.
What is the definition of a kayak?
This is an excellent video and proves you’re extreme level of awesomeness.
Bottom line it comes down to the angler. Electronics or not it’s still called “Fishing” and Not “Catching” so everyone has a chance to win.
How is it 20k? My autopilot with The works(graph, livescope, pucks, motor, power pole) was nowhere that much.
Small loco yoko tourneys I don't think they should.
Honestly, I think you should make fun of them. Humiliate them into taking you on without the electronics. I'd put money on you.
My advice ? If guys feel they can’t win, stop fishing that trail and start one where you cannot use it. I see your point and it’s frustrating, but don’t penalize the guy who is operating in the rules and doing well, you know? I’d just stop fishing that club and start one with a no FFS rule
