  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Hasmik Matevosyan is a fashion researcher and designer specialized in sustainability and clothes psychology. Fashion will not only stop destroying lives and the environment, it will even switch to a contributing industry that empowers clothing producers and consumers while at the same time benefiting the environment.
In May 2014 she won the title of a Radical Innovator of the Future with her project “Paradigm Shift in Fashion”. Hasmik is convinced she can change the fashion industry of today to the better.
We all wear clothes, which means that we all are influenced by fashion and that we influence fashion on our turn. Hasmik will explain how each one of us can make a difference, simply by adjusting our laundry practices or rethinking our decisions regarding the new purchases that we make. She will also explain how fashion brands and retailers can change the world as it is now, simply by starting a dialogue with the consumers and designing clothes based on the needs and desires, while at the same time keeping the well-being of clothing producers in mind. Hasmik’s ambition is to revolutionize the fashion industry from inside out.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I have been very disenchanted with the fashion industry lately. 10 years ago, i could walk into any half decent boutique and find at least 10 things i would love to buy, having to make a choice. Now i'm getting older, it does look like they just use the cheapest and least amount of fabric humanly possible, entirely ignore 40 and above and i have to resort to buying clothes in the secondhand store. What on earth do you do when all the pants you can get in the mall are the exact same model, meaning skin tight and horribly uncomfortable, and you personally scream for comfortable, loose fitting or even bold flared models. I have not spent a dime on new fashion in 10 years, except for some basics like turtleneck shirts, fleece jackets because for gods sake, something keep me warm here and underwear. They are leaving a massive amount of money on the table if fashion is so universally skewed towards a certain look that someone somewhere in an office decided was going to be in fashion for the entire human population for the next 10 years. Simply ask us what we want, we'll buy it! I don't mind paying for the extra fabric or whatever your deal is. I need comfortable pants so desperately i walk around in sweatpants all day! I drag my money from shop to shop, please give me what i need! Those pants i will love for half a decade. It's so backwards.

+Muh Stasch They still have to promote the brands and people wearing these clothes. The campagnes will just be less expensive to pull off.
