    I use my 6 band EQ up front with a 10 band and parametric EQs in the loop. Pretty much an unlimited array of tone options at hand. The most powerful and underused effect pedal by most non-pro guitarists.

      Hi ! If you don't mind, I have a question since you use parametric and band EQ... :)
      What is the difference between them ? And is there a reason for putting the parametric in the loop ?

    • @LookingForEntertainment112
      @LookingForEntertainment112 2 года назад +4

      @@Toronado7590 The parametric EQ has much more capacity to chose and tweak the frequencies you want to increase or reduce in your signal. A conventional EQ has a specific 6 or 10 preselected frequencies and you're stuck with those.
      I use it in the loop because I want it as a frequency shaping tool that won't be impacted by the tone stack of the amp. If it's up front I find it's less effective.

    Hi John, hi everybody. O use a boss eq-200. This pedal allows me to equalize the pre-amp and the power amp at the same time. It has 2 inputs and 2 outputs wich allows to use it in stereo too. With a H&K Grandmeister 40 deluxe, wich is a great amp with 4 channels, the possibilities on having diferent sounds is huge.

    Do you have an EQ pedal? How do you use yours? Let us know in the comments! Also note: if you didn't like how I used the EQ in this video that's totally fine! That's the cool thing about EQ pedals, you can use them however you'd like. They're very flexible tools! This is just an example of how you can use them but of course you have to use your ears!

    Hot take: EQs are the best pedal you can add to any rig.
    I've been using EQs in the loop for years as boosts and tone-shapers, but after watching this video and Tom Bukovac's rig rundown i decided that i should also try the EQ in front of the amp as a sort of drive pedal. Now I have two MXR Tenbands on the board and the options are incredible.
    First EQ is right before the Preamp-Input. Works as a boost, tone shaping tool, but i can also use it as a filter for fuzzes and ODs that are in front of it.
    EQ in the loop: cutting through the livemix by pushing the mids but compensating in the low end. Roll of some highs for warmer solo tone too. Straight up live level boost if i wanted to and of course the tone shaping aspect for recording.

    The difference is absolutely unbelievable and I am left questioning why I've never used one before.
    It's completely taken away the need for an OD, and doesn't cut away any of the low end on the amp - whilst tightening the 'Flub' up at the same time.

One thing I would personally love to see is how one performs with a full pedalboard, specifically with a boost pedal engaged. I have a stereo rig - a Laney IRT 60 head and an Orange Terror Stamp on my pedal board. The Laney gives me a modern, tight heavy rock sound, and the Terror Stamp has a Russian Big Muff in front of it for a stoner rock sound. The Terror Stamp only has a shape control for eq, and I have that set to about 11 o'clock. I recently added a 7 band eq pedal between the Muff and the Terror, to pull some of the low mids out by a couple of db. It sits way better with the Laney now and the combined tone is huge. They run though a 2x12 stereo cab, the Laney drives a Celestion V30 and the Orange drive a Celestion G12 Anniversary. The sound guy mics each speaker and pans them apart. Fun times.

    Hi John, boosting the 500 Hz in the loop of an Orange amp is a bold move 🤘. The 250 and 500 Hz bands are typically sliders that I pull down (250 a bit, 500 way more), but with the IRs you used it sounds great! I run my Rockerverb 50 through DV-77's and feel that I get better results when the 3-band EQ of the amp is close to noon [bass a tick down, mids and treble a tiny bit boosted] and the EQ pedal pulls out the 250's and 500's.
    Love your content. Keep up the great work!

Now I got a 10-band one to start shaping my overall rhythm tone because especially when playing baritone guitars and 7/8-string guitars your tone is drastically different than with a regular 6-string so I'll need a decent EQ pedal to shape a great sound for them low end monsters so it doesn't get muddy or loses clarity, definition while playing.. cheers

    Hi,
    I have been asking advices about flubby low ends on my setup a few weeks ago, and I finally got a second hand MXR 10 band EQ following your advice.
    I use it on the direct input of a Marshall DSL20 + 212 Orange cab (not in the FX loop because there are several effects I want to add/cut at the same moment).
    The result is absolutely killer : the low ends are much sharper, and the EQ'ed distorsion allows my Drive pedal to sharpen the sound even tighter. Also, that makes 3 shades of distorsion for one single channel!
    This is probably the most noticeable improvement I made on my gear so far. Our bassist has so clearer lines now. :p
    EQ's are so underrated, thank you for the advice!

    Yesss, EQ and too many people overlook it. I did, too, for a long time. Nobody thinks about Darkglass for guitar distortion, but an Alpha-Omicron w/ a graphic EQ after it can make an absolutely savage/brutal distortion for detuned guitars.

    I prefer using an EQ instead of an 808/boost in front of the amp to shape tones. EQ can be more precise and flexible, while sometimes another stage of clipping that comes with a boost pedal can mush up the final tone.

    i ordered a MXR 10 band EQ and it didn't work. I already have a Joyo 10 band EQ, but I needed a 2nd one. I sent the MXR back to the store, and bought a second Joyo. Save yourself $50 and buy the JOYO EQ. My opinion, you have to use an EQ with an Orange amp. I put the EQ in the FX loop.

    just wait until you use a DBX 266XS comp/ Gate in front and in the loop , keep in mind it has 20DB of clean gain, then you throw a BBE sonic max in the effects loop, and for a final razzle dazzle you use a DBX 215s parametric EQ in front and in the effects loop so in 3 rack spaces you have transformed your meh amp to the tightest crunchiest loudest amp in the room, guaranteed

    Hi Jon, In the video you have mentioned something that's been on my mind for while now: IF one can use EQ pedals as a clean boost why would ANYONE EVER use a dedicated boost pedal? I mean I am trying to get hold of Empress ParaEQ - if I can cut out/add any frequency I want and boost the signal, why would I ever need a Tube Screamer, Boss SD 1, Dirty Tree or whatever? I have been trying out different boost pedals but could never get the TONE know to do exactly what I wanted EQ-wise, and then I just thought - perhaps I should get an EQ instead of chasing boosts? Why doesn't everyone just use EQs instead of boost pedals? A genuine question. Thanks

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  2 года назад +1

      One main reason would be that regular boost pedals are easier to use and they also provide overdrive if required.

      @@SonicDriveStudio thank you! Just an idea: would you perhaps consider a video comparing a few boosts versus an EQ pedal, where you are trying to achieve the same effect on the EQ pedal? This might be eye opening for many people.

      Boost pedals' frequency response look similar to a high pass filter circuit; the bass levels drop sharply below the cut-off point, while equalizers only affect an area around the frequency for each dial. This means that the bass cut on an eq might not be as clean as you'd like, there could be more variation for different models, etc.
      Boost pedals are more consistent in their results, but they lack the versatility of an eq

    • @aleksas.3143
      @aleksas.3143 2 года назад

      I think it is mostly because boost pedals like the sd1 or the tubescreamer, other than filtering the low end and having the usual midrange push, they usually have some clipping and a sort of a compressed character active all the time even when you dial the drive pot to zero.
      This gives a different texture and response when compared to eq which is just what it is, an eq curve filtering your guitar pickup signal before hitting the preamp of the amplifier with nothing else added provided that your eq is relatively transparent.
      So an eq is usually way more versatile because you can tailor it to any amp, if you use a tubescreamer with a marshall it usually sounds great but if you try to boost some amps that have a more filtered and tight sound it can get nasal sounding and too choked like if you had slightly blended in a wah pedal, thats where the eq comes in, set it up to match the amp and it sounds great, i mostly prefer overdrive pedals for lead tones usually because they just give that little extra bit of texture and fluidity.

      @@jfrog1979 it's before my overdrive pedal. The EQ pedal itself isn't really affecting the volume, so I can boost or not with the overdrive.

    I think the amp sounds better without the pedal. The EQ pedal seems to add some brashness that I don't like. I think an all tube signal path is the best way to go.

    I tried two different MXR 10 Band EQ's and they were easily the most noisy pedals i've ever used in a rig. They add an insane amount of noise, regardless of how the EQ is set, even if you're not boosting anything. I'd rather have good drive pedals with useful EQs and a low noise floor.
