I am running a Dimebucker through a Behringer EQ700 which goes into a Behringer PEQ2200 and my noisegate can’t handle it, LOL! 😂😂😂 Everything goes into a Randall RH200, Gain 2 channel. I have to admit, the sound is absolutey killer when playing! I have to finetune it more, but you can already hear that specific Dimebag roar in there. 🤘
I can actually explain why the Silver one is louder, it's because of the low noise floor. The blue and black MXR eq pedals were notorious for their noise and hiss, so a low noise mod, known as the "Silent Night" mod became popular, as not only would the noise be reduced, but the pedal would actually become more efficient and have more output. The silver MXR eqs, both the 6 band and 10 band (I have the 10 band) are the modern design which has the low noise floor as standard, along with True Bypass. That's why the Silver EQ is louder and frankly better.
Okay, thought I was really super haf but thanks for confirming, as I also thought the silver was somehow, inexplicably, different *and* better as well. The little bit of additional dynamic range really reflects further down the signal change it goes. I was actually thinking at first that they cleaned up some of the circuitry and improved it, but then the actual DI signal comparison made it looked like the old pedal was compressing it somehow (no clipping, but whole signal is either pushed down or somehow attenuated in average amplitude levels) but I like your explanation in that it teaches me some history along with the physics/science of amplification and signal shaping in a practical and controlled setting. I bet the bypass on the silver eq is pretty clean as well...since it's now got a switch.
Robman275 Nerd 🤓. Haha. In all seriousness thanks for the explanation. This just proves that often times newer versions are better and more technologically advanced. My money is on the newer one. 👍
Through my stereo, not of great quality, the silver version sounds better but a little darker, and there were hints of treble in the blue that the silver didn't provide. Just me?
Absolutely love this and have the deepest respects for you. I've been watching your videos for about two year's now and following your tones on dime. Hopefully you read this and keep inspiring youth and other generations to come in music man keep up your great work.
Vinnie La Bella (Exhorder) told me when I was hanging out with him after a concert that Dime, and him were friends back in the day, and he told Dime how to set his EQ with the Smile/Frown settings. He also told me he felt bad for not making up with Dime before he was killed. He told me that they grew distant through the 90's, due to reasons, etc. Anyway... Just thought it was cool what he told me. He even told me how to set the EQ, and the history behind it, etc. He basically told me the Exhorder guitar EQ settings. It was quite the experience. In the video I noticed that the 800 isn't maxed out. If I heard right Vinnie told me it's to be maxed out, and then frown from there. I honestly can't remember much beyond that. That's if I even heard that right. I'll ask him if I get a hold of him. Marzi Montazeri (Exhorder) told me about a cool Solar guitar he's getting here in about a month roughly(?); he used two during the concert I was at. He even showed me the picture of it on his phone. All I'll say is it's white without the usual Solar logo. Good stuff. The venue locked him out on accident, and I went through it to open the door for him not knowing who is was at the time. Funny how things work out sometimes. I also got a special stage dropped guitar pick. From what Vinnie told me, Marzi hasn't dropped a pick since he was 16. I have very little intrest on Dimebags tone, but You, sir, going through all this for shit and giggles makes me a proud follower of yours. Keep up the good work!!
dude i totally agree about the gear nerding. I would see this type of comparison for new and old versions of other pedals. things like an old MIJ BOSS SD-1 vs a current model. I really appreciate the extra mile you went using a visual graph to show frequency and Db differences. awesome video.
These videos are pure gold 👌 not that I’ll ever really buy any of the equipment you test but it’s really interesting and great watching you test it. Keep it up Ola 😎
Ola, please keep making videos like this. I'm not a great guitarist, but I love guitar gear. A trend in videos, something like like "V1 vs Modern" versions of pedals, would be golden.
Ola thanx for the test comparison. I never liked the old MXR blue one because you couldn't switch it off. I used have a DoD 6 band and it was great. It took all the harshness out of my Mesa Boogie Mark 1, when switched on. Sorry I got rid of that amp. I bought one of the silver MXR's to add on my board which is all MXR effects.
This kind of test with an SM58 from the 70s or 80s and with a newer model would be cool to see, there are already plenty out there for the SM57. A/B tests are always a good watch, even if someone says it's an invalid test, the proof is in the pudding
Thanks for making this video......I'm in the market for a MXR 6 band EQ and was wondering if there was much of a difference...….now I know, thanks man.
Dude, you did a great job comparing them. The silver one sounded a bit louder but the tone was the same to me. I would get the silver one to save the headache.

I don’t expect them to sound any different from eachother. But I enjoy watch mr Ola, so it doesn’t really matter really what gear we are checking out haha.
If you do the same test between 2 blue ones, it'll probably give you the same differences as you measured between the blue and the silver, mainly because, Analog, they have passive components with slight margins of error that even the same exact circuit will have slight differences when compared between. Only thing of note is the volume, probably a change on the output stage to compensate for huge frequency cuts, but I bet the rest of the circuit is pretty much the same.
I had exactly the same request above lol, there is a difference. I think the dB difference between blue/silver eq might be the low noise floor on the silver one? Not 100% sure but that would make sense as another comment stated why in detail.
@@terminalvelocity4858 About the level difference, most likely, and, that noise floor might be actually from a different opamp used. I've seen some schematics of the old blue one, using an old opamp for input/output stage where the new ones should be using a newer better one, thus that level difference.
