I have allowed a player to do this, but I have ruled that once the Similacrum is no longer within the limit of the spell, it is now free to live its own life, and is an NPC. It may be similar to the original copy, but
I had an extended discussion with a character, he thought his freed Similacrum would happily and willingly sacrifice itself for the parties interests. I told him why would his copy do a sacrifice like that when you clearly would not? That forced him to think for a while and evaluate the risks of freeing rough copies of himself that he does not have direct control over.

The recent Wizard subclass video has opened my eyes to how cool the Enchantment school is. Now I want to play an Enchanter that protects his tower with several layers of security, but as a last resort, Glyph of Warding (spell glyph) set with Dominate Person level 6, the trespasser takes a ten minute walk to another Glyph of Warding (spell glyph) set with Modify Memory level 6. Viola! The trespasser has no memory of where the entrance to the tower was... or the entire previous week...

In regards to Monty's concern about the balancing of combat encounters and the social dynamics therein, I think my preferred use of the *Simulacrum* spell would be to have it stay behind in the wizard's study, researching spells, creating scrolls or magic items, doing chores, keeping your home base in good shape for when you return. If anything goes down that shouldn't, like an intruder in the base or an attack on the town, then *Sending* could be a way for your simulacrum to let you know right away. Rubies don't exactly grow on trees, so I'd be hesitant to take my simulacrum anywhere dangerous when it can be so much more useful doing downtime activites for the party.

One use for Simulacrum that a wizard in the party used was to have his simulacra take care of research scut work. They'd do things like alchemy, oversee his stronghold, etc.---all things that don't require spellcasting or fighting. Wizard buys a library worth of books. Wizard has own tower. Wizard moves books into tower. Wizard casts Homunculus. Wizard goes adventuring, but leaves Homunculus in tower. Wizard sees new creature. Wizard communicates to Homunculus "Find out about this thing." Homunculus does research while Wizard is doing other things.
You guys forgot about Mirage Arcane tho. 1sq mile of terrain HOWEVER YOU WANT!!! That is 1056x1056 (1,115,136) 5ft squares! Have an undead army coming to attack? Not anymore. Your new lava zone just ate them all... or most of them, at the very least. Just the flyers remain.

  • @_bats_
    @_bats_ 3 года назад +7

Homunculus seems more useful as a creature you'd leave behind in your tower while you're out adventuring. If you have some project that doesn't need your spellcasting that is time consuming, leave it there to do it. Leave it there to guard your tower and immediately warn you if anything's gone wrong. Leave it with important NPCs to assist or watch over them. You basically have unlimited Sending to it, and since it can magically convey everything it senses, the wizard could read books through the Homunculus from super far away. This would allow a wizard on an adventure to do research through the Homunculus while out adventuring.

For the campaign I'm in, we've had a little lantern TS basically serve as recurring character that does really crazy shit.
My favorite moment with it will probably always be when a Sea Dragon was attacking a village fishing fleet. The dragon had gotten away from us and was head running full speed towards the helpless fishing vessels. In a last desperate attempt to stop the creature, my wizard ordered his Familiar to pick up the Tint Servant and fly after the Sea Dragon. When they finally reached the creature, the familiar dropped the Tiny Servant SAS style onto the Sea Dragon and began pummeling the crap out of it. Simulacrum has some limitations. It isn't really a second character. It is "friendly to you and creatures you designate. It obeys your spoken commands..." If the creator sends it out of earshot, it is no longer controlled by the creator. It cannot automatically know how it's creator wants it to behave. For example, if the creator is incapacitated, that creator would be able to exert no control over the simulacrum.

@@Hazel-xl8in I don't think I'd argue that, but there was an example in the video of creating a simulacrum of a duke or something. It wouldn't continue doing what you want once you got to a point where you couldn't give it verbal commands anymore. Once you were in a position where you couldn't command it anymore, wouldn't it go back to acting like the duke normally would? What if the simulacrum was of something that was normally hostile to either the character or the cause for which the character fights?
Edit: LoL, I thought of something else. What if the character that did the self-creation is kind of a power hungry type with questionable morals; one who created the simulacrum solely for the expanded power, damn the consequences. How loyal to its creator would the simulacrum be if the creator were incapacitated. There are at least a few examples in fantasy literature I can think of where a simulacrum sought to replace the original.

11:30 Regarding "Create Homunculus vs. Find Familiar", although it's true it can't be cast as a Ritual (therefore, consuming a 6th level spell slot to recast it, if the homunculus dies) it doesn't take more time than casting Find Familiar: "The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes LONGER to cast than normal." (PHB 201, Rituals).
So Find Familiar takes 70 min (as a ritual) vs. Create Homunculus = 60 min.

My biggest problem with Simulacrum is one I had to make a house rule about. A player asked (fortunately _long_ before reaching a level where it was relevant) about making a simulacrum of her own character, so that the simulacrum could cast Wish without risk to the wizard herself of being wishboned (failing the 1/3 chance and becoming unable to cast Wish). I ruled, after a considerable amount of thought, that she could use this loophole _once,_ but the first time she had a simulacrum get wishboned, all subsequent simulacra she created would come into existence already wishboned. But by the Rules As Written, she was absolutely right and could avoid taking the chance of ever being wishboned, by having a simulacrum cast the spell.

You know, I feel like it would've been nice to have Demiplane be one of those spells that you can make permanent if you cast it in the same place for 1 year. Players could use it as the entrance to an admittedly small, yet really cool secret base that could be kept secure through a host of other spells, while I could also see high-level wizard NPCs setting up a whole bunch of interconnected demiplanes to create a massive dungeon complex a la Critical Role's Happy Fun Ball of Tricks. Idk, maybe that'd be too powerful even for an 8th level spell, but at the same time, several adventures use much larger demiplanes as settings for their stories, so it'd be nice to have a way to set something like that up using an existing spell that players could potentially pick up.

    Planar Binding Attitudes
Planar Binding says, "A bound creature must follow your instructions to the best of its ability. The creature obeys the letter of your instructions, but IF THE CREAURE IS HOSTILE TO YOU, it strives to twist your words to achieve its own objectives." But, it also says, "If the creature was summoned or created by another spell, that spell's duration is extended to match the duration of this spell." (emphasis mine) Summon Fey, Summon Elemental, and Summon Fiend all say, "The creature is an ally to you and your companions."
Given the way "hostile" and "ally" are used in D&D 5e rules, I think any Fey, elemental, or Fiend you summon and bind will be an ally for duration, never hostile, obeying commands in the spirit they're given and generally acting in the best interests of the summoner and their companions.

I'm planning a campaign for my party and in it there is a wizard NPC they could possibly meet. The wizard is mad but not insane and they like building magical monsters and items. They used the Demiplane spell to create a workshop/laboratory/living space and they created this magical artifact that allowed them to extend the dimensions of the Demiplane. I also cheated the Demiplane duration by having the NPC put a permanent teleportation circle into the Demiplane because when you cast Plane Shift if you attune the tuning fork material component to a Teleportation Circle, you can plane shift to that teleportation circle.

Campaign idea: you play as a party's worth of Clones after a failed excursion against the BBEG, but the Clone spell was weakened or otherwise defective so you start at lower levels, and the Wizard who cast it was otherwise incapacitated by the BBEG and did not rejoin the Clone-revived party (or is also highly nerfed). That effectively puts you into a "second playthrough" story of a campaign against a BBEG as heroes needing to not just forge a path ahead, but to do it where they'd done it once before and the BBEG is prepared and out for them (and possibly to rescue the lost Wizard and regain their lost powers and swag).

Basically he starts as a tomb raider type character, finds a tome (pact of the tome) that contains the wish spell and a genie appears and says "damn, that was supposed to be protected, wanna help me protect it in exchange for power?" And he said hell yes. Story happens, he becomes a lot less selfish and decides to actually protect the tome...then he gets wish...a few years later, mighty fortress surrounded by plant growth and awakenned trees, hidden underground maze full of elementals, undead and constructs, guards and wards everywhere, glyphs full of all kinds of fire storms, feebleminds, prismatic walls, reverse gravities and after all of that and a whole lot more there is a sealed sarcophagus with a clone in it. Once the warlock dies, he will awaken within it, summon his tome and wish for an eternal sleep from the genie that granted him the power to become a good person.

Awesome video guys! I really hope when you get on to the Chronurgist in your next subclass video you cover the synergy of some of these spells, especally with the level 14 Convergent Futures feature: Just a few off the top of my head:
Create Homunculus - Have your Homunculus cast and concentrate on a spell for you using Arcane Abeyance.
Simulacrum - Both you and your simulacrum can cause an opponent to auto fail a saving throw with Convergent Futures. That means that by the time your second turn comes around, even creatures with legendary resistance are going to automatically fail their save against your big spell. Speaking of...
Planar binding - Convergent Futures means you can cause the target to automatically fail its save. Using this with Wish and the tactic above means you can bind say Orcus to obey you and use his summoning powers to create a limitless army of undead including liches that obey you by proxy. Your move necromancers.

A more direct comparison could be something like Crown of Stars, which has comparable damage per bonus action to Illusory Dragon, with a lower level spell slot, without concentration, on a roll to hit instead of a saving throw. But then of course Illusory Dragon does a 60 foot cone AoE and has a fear effect stapled onto it while Crown of Stars hits a single target per turn

    • @asherandai1000
      @asherandai1000 3 года назад

@@Archimonde259 Crown of Stars damage doesn't compare either. Even assuming a single target, Crown of stars average damage is only 182 assuming every single attack hits.
At that level a high armour class is likely, I usually use 22 as a base for high CR single target encounters, as it could be higher or lower I think this is fair but feel free to use a different base.
Assuming a maxed stat bonus gives +11 to hit, making for a 50% miss rate. That further reduces Crown of Stars damage to 91 over 7 turns.
Illusory Dragon over 7 turns averages at 171.5 damage. Assuming every single save is successful reduces that to 85.75 damage. This is the "worst" case scenario for Illusory Dragon and it is almost equal, worst case scenario for CoS is 0 damage. It also doesn't factor in the 3 extra turns of damage, the AoE effect, or the other benefits it provides such as fear, providing a distraction target, or the fact you can remain hidden while ID attacks.
I like CoS, but you can't honestly think it compares in any way. CoS loses out big in every respect except duration.
I used Meteor Swarm because it's often seen by most as the pinnacle of spell damage, even though it actually isn't very good.

Hey guys! Im starting a campaign as a divination wizard, and I was wondering what cantrips to 3rd level spells you recommend?

    • @DravenDresden
      @DravenDresden 3 года назад

This will depend on the concept of your character and how you want to play them. I will presume, as Divination, you are going to focus on Battlefield Control (as Divination EXCELS at this):
Before anything else, TALK TO YOUR DM about how available Scrolls and Spellbooks will be. If they don't exist, you are going to be very limited. Still playable. Still can be a monster. But much less than if they do.
Race: It doesn't mater now. Either choose a race with features you like, or Custom Lineage for the Feat and look like a race (or whatever you want).
ASI: Wizards are... complicated. Everyone knows Int, Con, and Dex (for AC) are important. But what people seem to rarely factor... saving throws and what causes them. The most devastating spell effects are generally Int/Wis/Cha.
This means you need decent stats in almost everything. Wizards who roll stats have better odds than those that do not. Point buy is the 2nd best. 8/12/14/14/14/10 is the best option for point buy, imo.
Proficiency: Whenever I play a Wizard, I will almost always choose Sage for background. I may alter it sometimes, but what it gives is usually exactly what I want. That said, Wizard Profs (not background) I will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pick Arcana or History. Reason: This opens Sage to allow Perception. And I always want that on my Wizards.
      Cantrips:
Prestidigitation is a go-to for me. It doesn't help in combat (usually), but food that tastes terrible now doesn't. Warm water? nope. it's cold. Have to meet a king/queen/etc? We're all cleaned up. This is the most optional (imo) Cantrip to have though.
Mind Sliver. Read it. 'Nuff said.
Ray of Frost. Not as much damage as Firebolt, but it offers a bit more control with the 10ft movement speed redux.
Shape Water. When you can do so, but 3+ more water skins. These will be used for this spell. Have a lock you can open? No Rogue? Pour some water into the lock and use this cantrip. You just broke the lock.
Toll the Dead. Wisdom save for possible decent damage. If you don't want anything else, this would be ok.
Minor Illusion. Situational. It can be great... or garbage. Depends on how your DM runs illusions. So, as with any illusion spell, ask your DM before committing.
      1st Level Spells:
FIND FAMILIAR. If you are a Wizard, this is something you will want.
Mage Armor. This is also something you will want. And will prepare every single day... Unless you started your 1st level as Cleric or Artificer... or take a 1 level dip into either. At which point, you will wear armor and a shield. (This REQUIRES Warcaster, RAW).
Magic Missile. Automatic Damage is always nice. This is, however, the most optional spell for level 1 as damage is not your focus.
Sleep. You are a Wizard. This is level 1. Welcome to your most cast spell for a bit.
      Shield. Cuz your AC sucks.
      Grease. Small AOE CC.
Tasha's Hideous Laughter. Single Target shutdown.
Detect Magic. Always nice to have.
At this point you have options. Level 1 gives you 6 spells. Level 2 gives you 2 more. There are 8 spells listed above already. But you likely haven't taken them all. If this is the case, here's a few other options...
Absorb Elements. You likely won't need this yet, but it will save your life at some point later on.
Alarm. Safer resting areas. Know when to trigger traps. Stuff like that.
Comprehend Languages. Understand any language. Always useful.
Expeditious Retreat. For those "OH CRAP!" moments. If you are doing your job properly, this will rarely be needed.
Identify. This is very much DM dependent. If you want to know, you want to know. It isn't required (as attuning will reveal the same info), but is nice to know what you are attuning to before doing so. WARNING: Does NOT reveal curses.
      2nd Level Spells:
Web. One of the more powerful AOE CCs available.
Here is another moment. When you 1st get access to 2nd level spells, there are more than a few good control options.
Suggestion can nullify an opponent. "I need you to count every blade of grass between here and the river over there." "You really don't want to fight us; You should fly away as far and as fast as you can." DM dependent spell.
Phantasmal Force. Int Save. Causes damage. Possible CC.
These are my personal suggestions, but there is another.
Tasha's Mind Whip. There is no real CC here. But you could remove reactions and do some damage. Not something I'd cast often (at this level), but something to consider.
      Other spells to look at:
Mirror Image, Misty Step, Levitate, Hold Person, Invisibility, Blindness/Deafness, Blur, Enlarge/Reduce.
2nd level spells is where you'll want to find/buy a lot of scrolls (if possible).
      3rd Level Spells.
You are going to be expected to take fireball. You will be pressured into taking fireball. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE FIREBALL. You can. It's fun. It's up to you. I won't list it here.
Counterspell. You want this. You will never unprepare it.
Hypnotic Pattern. AOE Shutdown. Highly recommend.
Leomund's Tiny Hut. Safe resting is always appreciated.
Haste or Slow. I, personally, prefer Slow because of the stun if I lose concentration on Haste. Both are great options.
Fly is another good spell to have access to.
Dispel Magic. You'll want this eventually too.

Starting a campaign with my brother and his friends who ive known for probably close to ten years now ((not counting my brother lol))
Building a rogue aarakocra whos already lvl 6 since thats what they were last time they stopped to take a rl break.
Soooo stoked for it, already made a lvl20 verison of it thats a lv10 rogue/theif with a subclass hopefully starting asap being a druid of the forest also reaching lv 10 eventually.
One of my goals is to build a standing with the gryphons for my clan and to repopulate my aincent clan hehe.
I think it would be cool if when i hit lv20 i was trained in the spell of reincarnation and able to go back to my clan and show birdfolk new races i now welcome in to our flock as well as train the druids their reincarnation.
Orignaly i thought of maybe using barabian as a subclass and being able to rAGE LIKE AN ANGRY BIRD. But after reading all the spells available to the druids i thought it would fitting and i kinda fell in love with the idea. I plan to seek out dealers of gryphon eggs by using sky write and the theives language. I really wanna train/care/hunt for our mounts. Ill usually stick to forests and rooftops after of course we stop into an inn to get sloshed after a good adventure.
Any thoughts or advice? I kinda been up till 6am the last two nights writing about it lmao.

It's really interesting how experiences paint your perception afterward. Other than using Wish to imitate spells like explained in this video, I played with DM that if you dared to cast this BS, you'd be looking forward to certain death, sth horrible happening and maybe eternal damnation or some other awful shit happening to your soul.

Time for simulacrum madness. As a level 17 wizard, spend the money to make a simulacrum of yourself. Now command copy 1 to cast wish, using it to cast simulacrum without the costly component to make copy 2. Copy 2 casts wish to make copy 3. Copy 3 casts wish to make copy 4. Copy 4 casts wish...
10 minutes after you finished the first copy, you have an army of 100 wizards with level 7 or lower spell slots. They go off to fight the armies of undead while you and the last copy continue making another 100 copies to help the first ones. 8 hours later, you've created 4,200 copies of yourself.
    That's a lot of fireball.

Any spell cast with a wish spell is cast using a 9th level slot. So your planar binding would last a year and day.
This combo is incredibly powerful in combat when combined with portent. Having a Pit Fiend or Balor as a pet for a year is pretty decent. Technically you can do this every day for a year. Did someone say Decent to Avernus...
