The bard and I (wizard) have a combo move called "Checkmate" where I'll cast Hold Person/Hold Monster while they'll cast Animate Objects on 10 chessboard pieces. If the enemy fails the save and gets paralyzed, that's potentially 10 auto crits per turn for 20d4 + 40 free damage while we're still allowed to cast other spells.

@@egorsdeimos3523 when you cast animate objects on tiny objects (such as chest pieces) you can animate up to 10 of them, and they gain attack rolls equal to 1d4+4 dmg so that's already 10d4+40 potential damage
hold person/monster paralyzes the target, so every attack roll of the animated chest pieces against them is done at advantage, and then since they are paralyzed, every attack that hits is an automatic critical hit, so double the dice, and that's the 20d4+40 potential damage

Remember, if your players do that to you, the enemy known that strategy, and if they're powerful and intelligent, they would upgrade the strategy - perhaps they use flying demons that are also immune to poison, and that can move alongside the cloudkill even when the character they grapple has good strength. Perhaps they even find something that heals from taking poison damage :) (by the way, Mezzoloths can set up this combo all by themselves, they have Cloudkill innately, are immune to poison, and have more health than a zombie and 18 AC. They also have dispel magic, darkness and blindsight, and a 60-foot teleport that they can use endlessly. They are technically only CR5, but well... they hit far above that. Especially when you pair them with dragons, like the cult does in part two of The Cult Strikes Back in Rise of Tiamat.)

It can also be used to super buff the party right before a fight. Glyph of warding is one of the few ways to get around concentration requirements, which means you can layer on a lot more stuff than normal. For example, open the demiplane, and send everyone in your party to a spot that will hook them up with greater invisibility, flight, mind blank, true seeing, 8th level globe of invulnerability, stoneskin, haste, enlarge, protection from good and evil, etc. It costs a fortune, but it is affordable for a 17th level party who need to kill the campaign BBEG.

@@trombonegamer14 Contagion poisons a target and forces them to make Con saving throws. If they succeed 3 times, the effect ends. If they fail 3 times, they are no longer poisoned, but contract a disease. One of the disease options, Slimy Doom, gives disadvantage on Con saves and checks and stuns the target until the end of their next turn if they take damage, meaning they can't move or take actions, automatically fail Strength and Dex saves, and gives incoming attacks advantage.
Spirit Guardians summons spirits to protect you, meaning any enemy that comes within 15 feet of you, or starts their turn within 15 feet of you, must make a Wisdom save or take 3d8 radiant or necrotic damage, or half on a success, and halves their speed while inside that aura. The halved speed is not really a factor with this combo, since the guardian damage causes them to become stun-locked due to Slimy Doom.
It's really nasty if you can pull it off, though the Contagion part does have a weak spot in that it's ineffective against Level 10+ Monks, Level 3+ Paladins, about 1 in 5 monsters in the Monster Manual, and races like Yuan-Ti Purebloods due to immunity to disease, the poisoned condition, or both.

These are all interesting combinations, but I don't think "Microwave" would work. Forcecage has two options, one that allows you to create a cage and one that allows you to create a box. The box version says that it creates "a solid barrier that prevents any matter from passing through it and blocking any Spells cast into or out of the area." Doesn't that mean that it would stop Sickening Radiance from effecting the interior of the box? Unless you cast Sickening Radiance FIRST and they're stupid enough to not move away from it.
Now you COULD do it with the cage version, but at the risk of anyone inside the Forcecage being able to hit you with their own ranged attacks and/or spells. Am I right?

Super Counterspell/ Glibness+Counterspell on a Warlock or a Bard who takes Counterspell as a magical secret (very likely nonetheless). Glibness makes it so you can not roll lower than a 15 on a Charisma check. Counterspell requires you to make a spellcasting check to cancel the casting of a spell of a higher level than the spell slot used for Counterspell. Glibness is an 8th level spell that does not require concentration. With this combo every time you use counterspell even with a third level spell slot against a ninth level spell slot you will automatically negate it if your Charisma is at least 18. A Stone of Good Luck would decrease the Charisma requirement by 2. Considering you are a high level Bard or Warlock it is likely your Charisma is at least 18 nonetheless. The best thing about this is that Glibness and Counterspell are already useful by themselves. Glibness can be used during the "aggressive negotiations" portions if many boss encounters. Your Bard or Warlock can activate it as a means to address the confrontation beyond violence or to just set up for the fight if they want it. The your charisma rolls are likely to be 25 and up because of Glibness so there is a fair shot to shape the confrontation however you want anyway. Even if the fight starts immediately, Counterspell is a reaction spell so all you have to do is cast Glibness and move towards the enemy to stay within 60 feet of them. If they are a magic user which many high level bosses are, you can counterspell all of their spells provided they are visible and not an Archdruid. See Invisibility or True Seeing are also non concentration options for the Bard to get to counteract this downside if you think you need it. One character with this combo is going to put some wind in the enemy caster sails if they use this combo because besides an Archdruid only an enemy counterspell can truly counter it and this will use its reaction and an additional spell slot to sap the caster. Not to mention you are using 3rd level spells to counter much higher ones, granting you better stamina compared to this powerful caster. I would recommend a Bard use it because of their higher amount of spells slots. But either a Bard or Warlock pretty much shut down a powerful spellcaster for several rounds if their are two members if your party using this combi effectively. The only recourse an enemy mage has is to have another mage their with counterspell or they have non spell resources and non spell teleportation abilities which do exist.

The Radiator: Forcecage + Wall of Fire, or if you want to give them a chance to struggle I'll suggest the Hotgloo: 15 ft. diameter 10 ft. high ringed Wall of Fire and on the outside a 20 ft. diameter Wall of Ice sphere. The latter while having one level lower requirement does need two casters since both spells require concentration.
There's also one of the most sadistic ways of killing someone that shall remain unnamed: True Polymorph + time. Cast True Polymorph on your target and make them into something living, small, and defenseless. Capture them into a glass jar for maximum viewing pleasure. Poke holes into the lid if you want to savor it. Then... just wait. Starvation and Suffocation don't deal damage and True Polymorph becomes permanent after 1 hour, so the target will simply die from either suffocation or exhaustion. The No Fun Allowed/Puppetmaster combo: Only really viable with Bards, due to Jack of All Trades and because Warlocks don't have enough spell slots, combines Glibness and Counterspell/Dispel Magic/Telekinesis (Counterspell and Telekinesis requires Magical Secrets). At high levels with a maxed Charisma, you can automatically cancel a 9th level spell with a 3rd level slot as a reaction, and with a 5th level spell slot, your target has to beat 23 in a Strength check on every single one of your turns if they want to resist being restrained and/or moved against their will.

I have two spell combos that I'd like to inform you guys of.
The first is what I affectionately refer to as "Instant Army". For this combination, you cast the 7th level spell "Simulacrum" targeting yourself (extra points if you can do this through the use of a scroll). Once you have the simulacrum created, you bring it with you into your next battle. Upon starting the battle, you have your simulacrum cast the 9th level spell "Wish". For this use of Wish, we are going to use it's basic use to duplicate the effects of any other spell of 8th level or lower; in this case, "Simulacrum", making your simulacrum target you, rather than itself. This will then create a second Simulacrum that is also a copy of you, which would still have its 9th level spell slot available, and it would then do the same thing that the first simulacrum did: cast Wish to duplicate Simulacrum, targeting you. This then creates an additional simulacrum that can do the same thing, and so on and so forth, theoretically ad infinitum. The effects of this combination essentially creates an instant limitless army of clones that can then assist you in your battle.
The second combination is one that can unfortunately only be done by a Bard, due to it's special class feature "Magical Secrets". This allows you to at 10th, 14th, and 18th levels take two spells at each respective level from any class's spell list, as long as you have the appropriate level spell slots. This basically means that you can take two spells of up to 5th level at level 10, two spells of up to 7th level at level 14, and two spells of up to 9th level at level 18. The Lore Bard gets an additional two spells of up to 3rd level at level 6, but those won't be coming into play here.
This combination is going to be a use of multiple spells in order to get yourself a loyal Ancient Dragon to use as a mount. First, we are going to use the 4th level Paladin spell "Find Greater Steed" that we get through our Magical Secrets feature to summon a Pegasus as a mount. Once that's done, we are going to use the 9th level spell "True Polymorph" to turn our CR2 Pegasus into another CR2 or less creature; in this case a wyrmling. I prefer the Silver Wyrmling, but it can be done with any wyrmling of CR2 or lower, including Brass, Copper, Black, Bronze, Green, Silver, or White. Now, we are going to take a long rest, so that we can cast another 9th level spell that we took through our Magical Secrets feature, in this case, the 9th level spell that is only available to Chronurgy Wizards, "Time Ravage". Part of what this spell does is it ages the creature that it targets to a point where they are 30 days away from dying due to old age. In this case, it will age the dragon to the point of being an Ancient Dragon that is 30 days away from death. We will now use another spell that we acquired through our Magical Secrets feature: the 8th level spell "Clone" (something to keep in mind is that this can also be done through the basic use of the "Wish" spell, which is arguably a better way to do it, and also a better choice for Magical Secrets). This will create an inert clone of the Ancient Dragon that will take 120 days to reach maturity. The particularly useful part about this is that we can make the clone younger than the dragon the spell was targeting, so we'll make it just old enough that it has become an Ancient Dragon. Once the spell "Clone" is cast, we are going to need to use the 5th level spell "Greater Restoration" to undo the effects of the "Time Ravage" spell, so that our dragon steed doesn't die of old age before the clone matures. Next, we simply wait the 120 days for our clone to mature into the appropriate Ancient Dragon. Once it matures, in order to make certain that our steed will meet the conditions of "dying" in order to move into the Ancient Dragon body, we'll need to finally cast the 9th level spell Power Word: Kill, targeting our dragon steed. This will send the spirit of our mount into the cloned body of the Ancient Dragon, which means that we now have an Ancient Dragon as a loyal mount that has all the benefits of being bound to us through the Paladin spell "Find Greater Steed".
Thank you and good night. *Drops mic*

Some very cool combos. Not exactly a combo, but one of my favorite "combos" is to use Wish to duplicate a spell with a normally longer casting time midcomat. For example, a Wish cast forbiddance to lock down an area and do damage to enemies of the chosen type.
As a note regarding the forcecage + sickening radiance combo, you'd have to use the cage variant, not the box variant, of the forcecage for that to work, or alternatively have the sickening radiance cast in place before the forcecage. General spellcasting rules require a clear path to the target, and even if you can see your target through the invisible forcecage, a creature inside the box forcecage has total cover against effects originating from the outside: you wouldn't be able to target that point inside the box to begin with, and the sickening radiance would go off on the near side of the obstacle, outside the forcecage but leaving the creature inside unaffected.

It is important to note that the "Microwave" combo cannot work if you use the solid wall variant of the Forcecage. A forcecage can be made into either a literally cage with bars made of invisible force, or a box of solid walls. The cage version would potentially allow objects and spells to pass through, but not the box. It is only specified in a single line of text in the Player's Handbook in Chapter 10, but the PHB does say that, unless stated otherwise in that spell's description, "To target something, you must have a clear path to it, so it can't be behind total cover." Though invisible, a solid wall of magical force still qualifies as total cover, as it is a physical barrier between you and the target. So to target a point in space within a Forcecage, the cage itself cannot be a solid box.
This is not to say that the idea is made invalid. Most creatures would still struggle to try and escape a Forcecage even if it were made of bars rather than solid walls, and so the idea is still wonderful. But I did want to put that little bit of info out there. The concept of "line of effect", though not directly referred to as such and only mentioned in a single line of the book, does still technically exist within the game's rules as written.

Yes, I think this breaks the combo. If you try to center the radiance within the Forcecage there is a 50% chance of hitting one of the invisible bars following your line of sight. If that happens the radiance centers outside the cage behind the bar and the lines of effect mean that the inside of the cage is sheltered. If you center the effect outside the cage but further away there is some shielding from the bars, and the victims can also hide behind the Barbarian.

I found a pretty potent combo in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount but the downside is that it requires 2 spellcasters with access to high-level Dunamancy spells and A LOT of space so it'll be really hard to come by or use.
Basically, just cast Dark Star and Ravenous Void centered on the same space.
At Ravenous Void's (RV) center there is another 20ft sphere that does 5d10 force damage and restrains the enemy until they pass a strength-check. RV has a 100ft radius sphere outside of the inner sphere that is both difficult terrain and pulls in anyone that fails a strength-check all the way into the center.
Dark Star (DS) is another sphere, this time a 40ft radius, that is difficult terrain(meaning even the inner-sphere of RV will be difficult terrain, thus anyone inside that passes their strength-check might not even have enough speed to move out of the inner-RV) and not only complete magical darkness but also complete silence. All teleportation spells i know of require either verbal components or line of sight, most often both. They then take 8d10 force damage on a failed constitution-save, half if successful. Both spells entirely annihilate the target at 0hp
    So to recap:
RV is cast on the enemy, they are restrained and take 5d10 force damage. DS is cast in the same space and the enemy takes 8d10 force damage or half on a con-save. The enemy cannot teleport out by any means whatsoever. The enemy must succeed a str-check in order to end the restrained condition but since the inside of RV is now also difficult terrain anyone that doesn't have a 50ft speed(less if there are more than one enemy but remember that their action was used to end the restrained condition so no dashing) is unable to exit the inner-RV and is restrained again at the start of their next turn. If they do manage to get out of inner-RV they still have 20 more ft of complete magical darkness, silence, difficult terrain AND must succeed a str-check or be pulled all the way back into the center again. If they manage to escape all of that (which will at minimum be 26d10 of damage, assuming it's one enemy with 30ft speed that passes 2 str-checks, 1 str-save and 3 con-saves in a row) they will either have to teleport or walk through 100ft of difficult terrain, each round that they're in there requiring yet another str-save or they have to start AAAALLLL over again. If the enemy can teleport they're unlikely to have even been able to make it out of the restrained condition in the first place and if it's strong enough to break out it's unlikely to be able to teleport. With a speed of 30 that's a minimum 5 rounds, if everything goes perfectly. Even just one fail and you have to pass 5 more rounds and take minimum 26d10 damage again. All while the party can pelt the enemy with as many ranged attacks/spells as they'd like(preferably spells that either move creatures towards the center again or give disadvantage on str-saves).

Second attack hits, rolled 4 damage (doubled to 8 from paralyzed)

mold earth only works on a 5ft cube per cast. and the excavation option only works on loose earth, not stone or rock. and you can only move the targeted earth 5 ft away... so..... sounds good.. wouldn't work RAW. You'd have to find the right spot... loose earth... then cast mold earth 40 times to make a pit 200 ft deep... but then you can only move the earth 5 ft per cast.. making digging a deep pit actually not possible as you couldn't get the dirt out of the hole. unless you're metificulously digging out a large bowl shaped pit... in which case you're spending more like a couple days doing it.

    • @karsten69
      @karsten69 4 года назад

@@Nomadic813 no you're not. each cast is 6 seconds, so that's 50 ft of dirt a minute, or 3,000 ft of dirt an hour, or 72,000 cubic ft of dirt a day. exactly how much excavation did you plan on doing? you could build a wall of dirt around a city as fortifications along with a moat, in a day or so.

    • @Nomadic813
      @Nomadic813 4 года назад

@@karsten69 you're missing the point here. yes you can move that much dirt... but your main restriction is that you can only move that dirt 5 ft PER casting. if I am building a wall... I will have to have a platform at every 5 ft interval or i can't get any elevation gain because i will loose control and drop it after every casting. So you will need to build ramps and scaffolding in addition to making the primary structure.
Digging a hole with the spell runs into a similar problem. How do you get the dirt out of the hole? any hole deeper than that initial 5ft will need again ramps/platforms/pullies/trams to actually get the elevation gain necessary to remove the material from the hole. Because again.. you can't automatically move the dirt out of the hole. You can only move it 5 ft, at which point the spell ends and it drops due to gravity before you can cast it again.
Not to mention RAW, you can only move dirt or loose stone. You can't mold solid rock. So what structural integrity does that wall have? the moment you stack it on top of each other, it will just flatten out into a mound, which while it is an obstacle, certainly isn't a wall. so you probably have to build framing if you expect to actually have a solid wall instead of just a loose mound of dirt.
In order to build any large formation with this spell you NEED to spent time and resources building all kinds of support structures/tools that you're basically building a wall from scratch anyways. Cept you have a easy time loading the material. Which while helpful for sure. isn't the only thing you need to build.

It’s fairly straight forward: you animate 10 tiny objects, apply Crusader’s Mantle, which gives you 20d4+40 or 90 average damage. With this combo up, you then spam Dissonant Whispers and/or Command, which triggers 10 opportunity attacks on fail.
For my table specifically, we run an all Hexblade multiclass party all with Warcaster. So we double Animate Objects with Hex Divine Soul and Hex Bard, Crusader’s Mantle with a Hex Paladin, and chain the movement spells or Booming Blade with Warcaster.

Improvement to the microwave: if you are able to set up the battlefield beforehand cast Private sanctum in the target area and set it to no teleportation

I dm'd a party of friend's for a few decades. One notable fight that took the them by surprise was the trench warfare method. Only my enemy baddy who was from a dungeon magazine module. She cast sleet storm near her but more towards my players, the meatshields ran of course to her. As they could not see well she cast web to slow them down even more, then animated the skeletons in the sleet storm...then ported behind them near their softy casters and commanded her water weird (2)...then ported back from the water fountain the weak members stood near and ignored.....good times.

Using WIsh to cast Symbol is surprisingly effective by itself. It has an *enormous* radius (60 feet) and being able to ignore the 1 minute cast time allows you to use it offensively in any situation for all kinds of crazy effects.
