    Great way to lay it out! I know when my family decided to upgrade from the old Sea Ray to a Malibu the numbers the dealership was throwing at us were staggering. We walked away for awhile just to process the numbers we were being given. Once we decide to go with a new boat we started making decisions based on price that I feel eased our nerves but I feel hurt us over all. We ended up with a boat we liked but didn't love and ended up trading up to a new 22mxz just one year later. I wish your content on this stuff would have been available then and my personal decisions would have been slightly different. Thanks for the great content.

      Thank you Brian! I was hoping it would be helpful as sometimes the salesman at dealers don't know this stuff and people can always seek out their own financing.

      @@wake_mann exactly. For example I got a 4.79 privately when the dealership was at like 5.7. that savings alone sounds Minor but the savings is large. I also bought a loaded Malibu demo with 30 hours. That cut my cost by 1/3. There are tons of people full of great advice in the boating world that are willing to help. For us it was finding them which makes your site very valuable to all boaters of any level even if it's just for another perspective.

    Great content. It would be interesting to see the stats on how long the average owner owns a towboat and what they sell them for and purchase next. A repository of those stats for the last 20 years would be fun to pour through. I left the sport for a few years, but was around wakeboats and owned a few from around 1999-2009. I bought a 99 VLX in the 2007 season and it is crazy to me that 13 years later, VLX's are selling for about the same (if not a little more) than what I paid. The price of new boats has produced a really robust used market. I remember when the 2004 Xstar dropped and it seems like that is when the price of new boats took a giant leap forward.

    Great video! One thing I wished you touched on was total interest paid since to some it may be misleading seeing a payment of roughly $700 a month and a total interest payment of 51K, which after 15-20 years the boat will most likely not be worth given the advancements in the realm of boats. I'm a numbers guy as well and getting into the watersports. You get a peace of mind when buying a new boat, but the "new boat" smell wears off quickly, so I just purchased a 2002 Ski Supreme V220 with 100 hours for 15K cash. I know I was definitely at the right place and time to snag a v-drive for that much, and yea it doesn't have sacs, banging speakers, or surf tabs - but thats the fun knowing with some time cash saved it can all be installed. Good Stuff!

    You're better off refinancing your home and using the cash equity towards your boat loan or using it to purchase in full.. We bought a 40k boat in 2017 with no down for 10 years.. We bought our house in 2018. housing values spiked in 2020 so we had an assessment done. We refinanced at 2.75%. we now pay less per month on our home and own the boat outright.

  • @blancs3030
    @blancs3030 4 года назад +4

    I was looking to own a wakeboat to wakesurf more than anything. But anything over 50k was completely out of the question. A lot of banks I found only finance new boats 10 to 15 years and would only finance used boats 6 to 8 years but only 2011 or newer. Enter Heyday, I found a new 2019 WT-2DC, with trailer, nicely equipped for 45k with 8 year bow to stern warranty. So $400 a month, zero down, extremely doable.

      @bro dude yeah I got it last July, I got 25 hours on it so far. Wake surfing is our main thing, that it throws a nice surf wake. We are just using a suction gate to make a big wave. They have an option for surf tabs cost about 3k, but the nauticurl suction gate is about $100 and has shown to throw a better wave. You'll only miss out on transitioning when using suction gate instead of surf tabs. Only a few people have wakeboarded behind it, all novices, so we are doing good to go from wake to wake with it. We usually mellow it down with the center tab, but you can make it steep and rampy.

    Currently shopping for a boat, do I take care of my financing first and get approved for a certain amount before I start looking or do I find a boat then start financing process? The problem is that if I finance first, I don’t want them to ding my credit if I don’t find anything until next season. If I find a boat first, it may be gone by the time I get my funds.

      Hi Joel, I hear ya. Usually if you get pre-approved your score the bank pulls is good for a certain amount of time like 90 days. They won't pull your credit again in those 90 days. If you get pre-approved at one bank and then go to another for your loan you would incur another credit hit. Just be careful, hope this helps.

    Wakeman! Looking for some advice! We recently went with some friends and did the whole wake surf thing and was an absolute blast! So now I’m in the market for a boat and being first time boat owners we are torn on what to go with. We are leaning heavy on a flawless 06 Malibu 21vlx 320 indmar only 8hrs on it! Crazy how new it looks! For 40k. Or go the new route with all the things that make wake surfing process easier like you said. Would it be possible to add surf gates and whatever else necessary to improve the wak for surfing on the 06? Or too much trouble? Not wanting to go over $500 a month payment either. Please help lol

    • @wake_mann
      @wake_mann  3 года назад +1

      Hi Samantha, wow tough call. Very rare to find an older boat with only 8 hours, makes wonder why it only has 8 hours. You would not be able to install surf gate exactly but there are after market options. I know I would rather go with something which already has the surf gates but that is me. You will be able to create a surfable wave behind the vlx with a lot of weight and a wakeshaper. That being said most people who buy something older first end up buying something newer later. Where are you located?

      @@wake_mann we are in Bakersfield CA and have some Great Lakes within 1.5 hrs of us! Our neighbor owns the local dealership here in town and has completely gone through the 06 and says he’s never seen a used boat in this good of condition with this low of hrs. Maybe a sales pitch lol. But the wake surfing is very important to us and we just are looking for a way to improve it on the 06 with aftermarket parts or just go with something newer that won’t break the bank. The bank will only do 12 years on this boat with %27 down. Puts us at about $385 monthly. But we are willing to go up to $500 a month for a boat. What would you do? Being first time owners.

    • @wake_mann
      @wake_mann  3 года назад +1

      Knowing what I know now, I would do a Malibu 2015 or up or an Axis 2016 or up. I owned a 2007 23 LSV and I could make a fun wave but it was very short and it was a pain switch weight side to side. At a minimum you will want to add 1000 lbs of weight to the vlx and get a shaper that sticks to the side of the boat by suction cup so you can move it side to side. This way you can keep your boat evenly weighted and just switch the shaper. Either way you go im sure you will have fun.

      Hi Brooks, when going used you can only go up to 20 years if it's 2ish years old. That being said I would suggest something between 5 and 10 years for financing unless it is only 2 years old then maybe 15 years depending on the scenario. As far as boats go, I would do the best you can to get something with a surf system like surf gate. Maybe a 2017 Malibu VLX or 2016 Axis. If you have to go older then maybe 2015 VLX or 2014 23 LSV.

I dont see a lot on the used market, but if you get them stripped out with no tech, the depreciation ius going to be very little just because the powertrain is name brand and the hull quality is good. Sure you don't get custom presets and rider profiles and gyroscopic auto ballast, but a 10 year old mastercraft doesn't have it either.

    • @wake_mann

      Try to work on body posture. You shouldn't be bending at the waist at all. Bend your knees but keep your torso straight. Keep your arms straight out not flexed at the that elbow and keep handle at waist level. If you can do these things you will eliminate most of what wastes your energy while wakeboarding. Hope this helps.

      Take a second job and work your ass off. With focus and any luck you’ll be able to save $10k in one season. Pay cash for your toy and if it’s a boat it’ll have to be an older ski boat. Weigh it down with ballast bags and put a wedge on it. Put your friends in the middle of the lake on a floating pad and make runs past them. You’ll have a ton of fun.
      I would suggest you don’t take on any major loans (if you can even get them) until you know what your passion is and you’re pretty well established like this gentleman is. Good luck and I wish you success.

    Paying 7% interest on a 100K boat would be very unwise. That's something poor people do. You are never going to win with your finances doing something like that. Personally for me, I would first make sure whatever I was financing was such that I would never be upside down on the boat. Then realize that something like this is a very low priority and make sure you have your emergency fund, retirement set up, no credit card debt and college fund if applicable.

      I agree with your financial point, but let me tell you a story a wise man once told me: There was once a farmer who was offered 100 grand for every mile he ran away from his house. The catch was- he had to be back before the sun set. Off he went, sprinting his fastest so he could win the most amount of money possible. He ran for miles, and figured he would soon have to turn back around. Exhausted, he figured he made at least a million. "Last few steps..." He eventually turned around and made it all the way back home just in the nick of time!!........Then he had a heart attack and died. My friend, that day represents our life, people who worry about making/saving money until they're old are the farmer. Live and do what you love to do because when you're old... or dead... it will be too late, and you will regret not paying the 7%. Do what you can while you can. And the truth - there are people in this world who are rich yet have nothing.

    Many people that finance for 20 years change boats every single year. They basically transfer their down payment and equity into the new boat. More like renting than owning.
    I’m in commission sales so a large part of my income comes from yearly commission checks. We went with a 15 year loan on our 2013 wakeboat that I will pay off in a couple years with each yearly commission check. In the meantime, the payments are super affordable.
