Cabin in the Woods 39: Installing Composite T&G Porch Flooring

- In this episode of Cabin in the Woods, we share installing Timbertech/Azek composite T&G porch board decking. This is a PVC deck board made to resemble the old style narrow tongue and groove deck board. It is much lighter weight compared to other composite deck boards and has a very durable and gorgeous finish. For the most part it cut and installed exactly like a traditional wood deck, but with no finishes to apply and a virtually maintenance free life.
The cortex plugs are absolutely awesome and once installed, make it almost impossible to find where the fasteners were installed in the composite decking.

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.
You know your boss is a friend when he does 75% of the work and 90% of the thinking. I think Greg's greatest asset is that he shows up every day - that's invaluable! Especially these days. He also has amazing hair, the build of a ripped girl scout, and a good attitude...gotta love that kid.
I really appreciate your attention to detail!
I really appreciate that you guys show the problems and how you work through them. Most folks show one or two runs than fast forward to the end. The way you guys worked through the end of the porch was super helpful.
Thanks.
Me dreading to go to work tomorrow, also me watching a video of what I’ll be doing lol
It's a shame this level of craftsmanship is rare. RR Buildings and Essential Craftsman are what anyone in construction should strive to be like.
The plugs in the trim board was like one of those satisfying videos, I think I could’ve watched that for 3-4 minutes
Can definitely tell Kyle and Greg are like Brothers. Nice to be able to joke, poke, make “fun of” one another AND still do great work! All while knowing that’s you both have each other’s backs, and no hard feelings.....TRUE FRIENDS, hard to come by; & when find them, no matter what happens, will be there if need.
Love the banter from you two🤣
"I just don't have experience on my knees like you Greg" 🤣🤣 you guys are great!
ROASTED. 🔥 Kyle was ready. 😂
Gottem!!
Whole lotta screwin'
Kyle I see other building channels talking about you and your quality of what you do. They have said you are the best. Great job Kyle.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The details y’all put into your work is incredible. It even carries into your matching bags and pants! Love it.
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR VIDEO'S. THANKS A MILLION
Love how you guys always have a clean job site and always use the best tools for the job. Keep up the good work.
Everything you guys do is always top quality, superb workmanship absolutely love it.👍👍👍👍👍
You guys do amazing work! Love the attention to detail.
The best part of construction is looking at a completed project especially when it looks really nice. I miss that part since retiring.
as a DIY guy I love the details and honestly in pointing out where the little bits of extra detail make all the difference in the finished project
Attention to detail love it
Attention to detail,great work
That decking is a great looking product. That bit a plug system is really nice. Good looking work.
As a "framer/carpenter " your attention to detail, is amazing..
Love that decking.
damn , reminds me for good old times when I was building terraces and wooden floors...nice to watch a pro at his work and that u know what u are working. glad to show this video with us ....thanks for that. hope we ca work soon here in europe when the lock down is over.
Wonderful job!!!
Looks Beautiful guys !!
good craftsmanship as always
This whole video made my knees hurt just from watching you kneel so much. Nice job!
Looks very nice!! 👍😁
Great job, and you go the extra mile for quality. Nice
It looks solid and strong.
"I actually don't know if it helps at all!" 😂 I would trust your hunch over most people's facts!
cant wait till its finished and you give us a tour ..
Master of your craft! Love the videos and channel mate.
Looks awesome
Another great job Kyle, keep up the great video's.
Awesome job guys!! Just a tip: When running the edge board on a deck, try and hide any seams behind a post if you can. It always looks much cleaner and I know you like that! Great video and attention to details as usual
Love that Azek. Awsome porch flooring and decking products. Just installed some of that same color for a client this year. Looks good guys.
It’s a great product
Great build 👍
that will be 1 awesome deer stand
Een prachtig kerstfeest 🎄🎄 Groetjes uit Holland 👋🏼👋🏼
Of all the videos I watched from you, here at 5:09 it's the first time I said to myself " oh it's not safe the way he did this cut"!
Keep a small block of bees wax.
Scrape the threads once on opposite sides of the screw.
Then sink the screw.
Like butter!
A little masterpiece.
I freakin love y’all’s videos man!!
Nice job. Of coarse it’s a nice job. Thanks.
To add to the previous comment. I would also use a 1/4 round in a a small router to the edges of the (in the field borads) to compliment to round over on the picture frame. Other then that always looks great guys.
Great work
Looks Really Really Good bro nice job!
Good job 👍
Kyle , it’s fine job!!
thanks
The brotherly trash talk between you two it very entertaining to watch. Everytime Greg wears shorts I keep expecting you to hand him a rolled up piece of paper to tie around his pigeon legs.
I think that was the first dirty comment I’ve heard you say ever to Graig. Lol. It was meant with no harm, great video Kyle
Hahaha, "I just dont have experience on my knees like you Graig" had me rolling
Молодцы парни я сам из россии все время смотрю ваши ролики и не перестаю наслаждаться увиденным
еще раз респект.
Cordless jigsaw cuts composite very well when cutting around posts. A lot quieter and square.
good video brotha. Tell your co-worker that knee pads are preventive. Dont wait to be old with your knees all messed up to start wearing them. stay safe out there!
Hi Kyle and Greg!!
@17:00 Greg for the win! ....finally 🤣😂
Elegant!
Look up Camo deck clips, they're a little pricey but for tongue and groove decking they make it go 1000x times faster. You can pre fab the whole deck and come back and screw it down. Me and two other guys, 1 on each end and one in the middle did a 20x16 deck in 1 1/2 hours.
Nice work you doit
Instead of solid blocking , run perpendicular blocking for the picture frame it will allow for drainage and water won’t pool up in between deck boards , helps in the freeze season
thanks big dog!
Kyle.. I was at work. Just thinkin about the deck. 20 20 hindsight.. maybe next time make the cut for the picture frame behind the last post on the left.. so u have a full piece left to look at finishing it off instead of 2 pieces.. might cost another board. But priceless to look at a smooth piece. Thanks
Greg’s pro knee action!!! Haha 😂
for future decks and since the 6x6 posts are oversized for the load, put a 1/2" deep dadoo above the joist the thickness of the flooring and you will have a place to kill the end of your decking and to allow for any contraction/expansion
and sorry, meant to compliment you on a awesome looking deck
@@hpw59 its a great idea thank you
I had to Google Dado joints and this is a great tip.
@@RRBuildings I believe I read that in "Tips and Techniques" from Fine HomeBuilding Mag. years ago
Throw a piece of left over foam board styrofoam insulation in the truck for a knee pad. Always handy.
Good afternoon from St John Parish, Louisiana 13 Dec 20.
Hello from Romania 😜
I'm predicting 500K subscribers by the end of the year.
They're 3k away with more than half a month to get there, i think so too!
I'm predicting that tomorrow morning, the sun will come up.

Tip: On the last board with flooring you can cut the bottom part of tongue off, drop in and face nail.
I just started a woodworking business and them GRK screws are expensive and run out fast lol but they are the best and worth the price
Haha. Ya Kyle definitely set Greg up for that fall.
Kyle-- Jim here from “Kings Table Custom Carpentry! I was listening to the Modern Craftsman Podcast while working! Now almost to a tee I hear from this guys many who are not as successful as you state “well I just could not run the company and wear a tool belt”? I am a little confused? I am growing however I can not see myself not doing what I love in exchange for running around checking work, going over bills constantly, and making deals signing contracts!
Am I just nuts?
Amazing video, I really enjoy watching and learning. I can't wait till I can start building full time.
What are your go to speed squares and roofing squares? I just watch the hammer video. I wonder do you have stories of your squares that you use?
Greg loves that triple hammer 👌
When you get out of work to watch work
That deck looks good but it’ll be crazy hot when the sun is shining on it
Yeah.. neighbour put in a back deck with that stuff in SW Ontario, Canada, and it's hot enough in the summer that his grandkids can't walk barefoot on it when it's had direct sun on it. Looks absolutely amazing, but crazy hot.
Was cutting off the bottom part of the groove to allow the piece to fall in place, an option with this material?
Best look is double perimeter with miters
Any concerns with water that gets between the deck floor and the ceiling metal below it? Looks super nice and of course your attention to detail makes it pop even more. Love how you were able to get that last board figured out. Nice work as always.
My concern is insects and critters getting into the cavity between steel ceiling and deck.
I wish at the beginning of a project you would show the plans, a rendering, or an elevation of what it would look like
Хорошая работа.
Love your content! Couple questions, why not have some scrap sheeting to stand on? Also. Do you ever put in the border band first?
Kyle the only suggestion I would make to both you and Greg would be to get some really good knee pads and wear them. I wish I had.
Is that the lufkin glow in the dark tape you are using? I just bought one around thanksgiving and I have been working on a dark property with no electric and I absolutely love that tape.
Hey Kyle, On the picture framing.. I was wonder why you choose to make the seam in an open area instead of behind one of the post. Cosmetically it would have looked better I assume!
I sure there is a reason I was just curious
Do You reckon that being on the south side, the heat from the sun will expand that deck board too much and cause warpage? It's an absolute beautiful deck though... Great job as always Kyle and Gregg
Hi Kyle love your channel you guys do great work! Wondering about your black/florescent tape measure? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you
10:06 is hilarious.
" I just dont have experience on my knees like you Greg" 😂😂😂😂
I can't believe how wobbly that deck was, I bet the railing will tie it all in...
What?
@@joshgastley175 Lol. It was kind of a joke on the vids at the time. He had explained it was the lift wobbling, not the building.
I knew that already because I have worked in those lifts a lot and know they are wobbly.
So just a running joke for a few vids.
Looks great. are you not doing the screening?
I wonder how many Dr. Decks tips you used on this beast!
Kyle--What type of screws did you use to secure the metal panels to the underside of the porch? Are the screws you usually use to secure panels to regular framing able to withstand the chemicals in PT lumber or did you have to use a screw with a different coating?
they are made for treated
👍
Great work . Why not using a jigsaw for the cuts u do around the post ? Much faster!!
I use the white grk to install kitchens
The only thing I would change is I would’ve had that seam land on a post to make that outer board appear seemless.
Looks great! Just curious - did you use the color “coastline” for the tng boards and “dark hickory” for the pictured frame board or did you use “dark hickory” for the tng boards and something else for the picture framed board?
Is the light fixture underneath the deck boards waterproof? It looks like a metal box fed by standard romex?
that is a good question...I didn't do any electical...but the guy that did is top notch.. I'd trust what he did
I agree. Major code violation. I noticed the same thing. Neither wire nor box are rated for that application (wet location).
