  • In this episode of Cabin in the Woods, we work on the installation of the kitchen cabinets. I am sure this might be standard carpentry for many out there, but I try to share with you some of the simple tips I’ve learned over the years as well as the mistakes I have made because I didn’t know better.
Installing cabinets in a post frame could be tricky if you didn’t take time to square and plumb up your main structures walls. Also, concrete floors are inherently imperfect which can cause additional concerns. Follow along to see how I dealt with these issues and more in this most recent episode.

@13:02 I got a similar tip from an old carpenter. Run your screw or nail through your hair. The natural grease that is in your hair will make the screw/nail go in the wood much easier. 👍

On my first DIY kitchen I pick up some Bessey cabinet clamps. For a first timer they made it a lot easier to clamp the cabinet faces together while at the same time use the Bessey clamp to bring the two face frames flush to each other. I think they are a must if someone has not installed cabinets before. Thanks for the honesty in your videos. Putting clips like missing your screw gun on top of a cabinet makes your content so much more relatable, realistic.

Looking great! We built a bar in our basement and I made all of the cabinet carcasses and doors from scratch from rustic hickory. Having the correct tools for the job is more than half the battle in my mind, based on past projects. Taking the extra time to line things up and measure twice makes up for the rest! We ended up building the cabinet bases and carcass separate to simplify things and it worked out great!

Love what you say about "first kitchen cabinets". Mine were 1984 in Amsterdam and definitely only attached to the wall :). For sure a poor job and at the time Ikea hardly existed yet. Skip 35 years to 2019 and I remade 8 old Ikea Billy cabinets into some really nice built-in bookshelves. Yes, I tightened them with 1 1/4" screws all to each other. It also involved cutting off the baseboards and routing off the slight top edges, plus some neat trim. The result became super perfect.

Can't tell you how many times I've searched for my drill, pencil tape whatever and its on top of or in a cabinet🤣
Being a guy who loves tools that make life easy, I'm suprised that you dont have a set of face frame clamps. They're almost better then a second set of hands on cabinet installs.
I've only ever found one set of knee pads that are comfortable snd stay on. But most of the time I use foam mats. The ones that lock together meant for garage or basement flooring or something. A single one works great to kneel on or you can put them together to cover everywhere you may kneel. Of course they also have the added bonus of protecting the flooring if it's finished.
Anyway loves your videos, pretty cool to see you doing something different from the usual on this build.

Kyle, you should try EZlevel cabinet leveling feet. You mount them to the underside of your carcasses before you set them in place & they allow you infinite adjustment of all 4 corners from the front of the cabinet during installation. A bit more pricey than a pack of wooden shims but they make up for it by not having to fuss with trying to cut your shims level after you screw the cabinets in place.

I've only installed one entire kitchen and it was a nut-buster. I did it for a mates parents, so of course I had lots of "help". Another mate said he'd done them before, but couldn't assemble the cabinets right, and I was the only person with tools so lots of fun playing 'Hunt the drill'. Took an entire week to rip out and put new in. Did get loads of proper tea though so it wasn't all bad.

Our first house was built by one of the big national builders and I’ve discovered so many corners that were cut and poor craftsmanship in a lot of what was done. I want to be able to speak intelligently and ask the right questions this time around.

I've been installing custom cabinets with my father for many years. We cut all our parts and build the cabinets in-house and do the complete install. Over the years we've learned to refine parts of the assembly/install process and I've got a couple suggestions for you.
You somewhat alluded to it when you were working on the cabinets in the peninsula, but when building cabinets to be level over an entire area, use that laser level and find the highest point first. Same goes for working against walls that may not be plumb or completely flat. Find the high points and shim up to it. Square up the cabinets as best you can before attaching them to the walls.
Another tip for a cleaner finish of the cabinets is to check out FastCap flushmount drill bit systems with peel and stick cover caps. It might be a little bit more work when screwing the cabinets together, but hiding screw behind the FastCaps leaves for a real nice finish. Works great for unfinished and prefinished woods. Heck, you can even match the grain direction of the caps. We typically run a deeper countersink after the flushmount bit with coarse drywall screws to make sure the screw heads are sunk deep enough for the peel and stick caps to sit flush.
Also made by FastCap, they're called little hands, or 3rd hands to set upper cabinets after the base cabinets and rough top have been installed. Those become clutch when you're installing cabinets by yourself and need to hold an upper in place so it can be attached.

Oooooopphhh....... I remember doing cabinet installations that way for several years. You've gotta be pretty dang careful with what you're doing. Obviously you've done this many of times so you can make it work just fine with standard clamps. That's what I used to tell myself too. "I don't need none of that fancy DIY tool crap!" Yup...... Yes I do....
But anyhow man........ Pick you up a set of Pony clamps Kyle! They really are worth every last penny when doing cabinets that are flush, and stile to stile as you are here.
Those, and a tapered pre drill bit, with a countersink with built in collar, just for your cabinet screws. The pony clamps act as a stop when in conjunction with the collar. It's NICE!
My laborers do installs by themselves now. Extremely hard to mess things up with the right clamps. All I have to do is get things laid out for them.
You can also pull wonky stiles into 100% accuracy if needed. You can pull multiple cabinets in line pretty easy if needed, once the stiles are perfectly aligned. Obviously not as big of a deal on unfinished cabinets, but It's still worth every ounce of time/headache savings.
The simple things in life brother. Just my .02 cents from one carpenter to another.
The Cabin in the Woods is lookin' great gentlemen. Fantastic call on LSL's on kitchen and bath walls for sure. 👍
Keep up the OCD!....... I mean "good work." 🤣
Thanks for the content as usual. 💯
    GOD BLESS AMERICA!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It's advisable to set up banks of 3 and 4 units on a flat surface and join them together. Then install the upper or lower bank as a full piece. Much easier to shim properly then. Also I really like your build! So much easier to install cabinets on straight and plumb walls ...

Love your channel, and your constant demonstration of how important getting everything level and square and plumb from the start.
Our crew of 3 amateurs has installed more than 100 kitchens in Habitat for Humanity houses. Some things we learned:
Uppers first unless there is some compelling reason not to.
Get some cabinet clamps. Much, much easier than squeeze clamps.
We use trim head screws to tie face frames together. Hard to see in any case, and we can hide behind hinge mounting much of the time.
When attaching an upper cabinet to a deep cabinet (like the pantry in the video), I run a piece of tape along the deep cabinet where the upper will go. Hold the upper in place and draw a line where the front of the face frame is. Measure back 3/8", mark where you want holes to attach cabinets to each other and drill from the outside of the pantry in. Put the upper in place and screw together. The GRK screws you use or the trim heads we use will self drill into the face frame. This eliminates measuring errors inside the deep cabinet.
Like your method of measuring down from the top of the cabinet instead of up from the floor for sink base. I like to turn the cabinet on its face on the floor and the back is horizontal. Easier to measure and cut/drill.
You couldn't do it on this job because of the wall, but we always put up a ledger to install uppers. We can assemble a run of uppers and lift and install as a unit. A couple holes in thie drywall are easy to spackle and spot paint later.
Again, love the videos-keep 'em coming.

I'm not a builder, but I've built 5 houses, 3 for me and one each with my parents and my Sister and her husband. We installed all the cabinets. I've learned more about installation each time. My cabinets in this house are custom. One wall is cabinets sitting in an alcove. the oven cabinet is 8' tall and the cabinet maker left me enough material to scribe it to the wall. These cabinets are a tight fit and look great with no fillers. I've installed Semi Custom cabinets with fillers as well. I also cut a bevel and then scribe to the wall. The bevel makes it so you don't have to remove so much material. I used to have a friend that was a cabinet maker. He could install a kitchen in a couple of hours. He was always thinking 4 or 5 steps ahead. when installing trim, he cut several pieces at the same time. I like to gang cabinets together when possible. Easier than trying to line them up one at a time.

As my friends dad used to pound us with: 'If you aint wearin a belt, you aint getting paid' Whenever I work a job with my buddy you will see the two of us in full gear even on break or planning next steps. Another old timer trick I learned is when you cut plastic just reverse the saw or holesaw and it will cut cleaner.

If you mark the studs on the wall between the uppers and lowers it makes your job easier. Also having pic of the wall sans sheeting so you can refer to locations of pipes and wires. I have always used the idea of ply instead of drywall behind cabinets. It guarantees you a tie in point no matter what. I also tend to lock several boxes together if possible so setting and leveling gets easier.

I volunteer for Habitat pulling out kitchens that are being donated I laughed at you comment about screwing in that cabinet from the back. We find a lot of crazy stuff that makes our job harder your kitchen would be a breeze.

My house was built in 1963. If I ever decided to donate my cabinets, don't think that would work since looks like they were nailed to the walls with 16D nails.

Congrats on 500k subscribers! Those cabinets are well-constructed, and with your installation, should last a lifetime. I'm hoping that the countertop is a good, contrasty color, though. Great video!!

In the uk we have adjustable legs on the cabinets and then use a plinth to cover them so makes it easier to set them level and such interesting to see how things are made in other countries
