Nice to hear your still into bikes, I’ve been doing my maintenance on my 2017 FJR the last little while.
I was wanting to chime into you to say how much I’ve enjoyed and used all your how to videos.
I was thinking that you may not read older posts so wasn’t sure you’d get to see my thanks.
But your videos really have super helpful.
So if your jumping to a different bike / brand I’m sure you’ll be a big help for that model or brand.

To me, the FJR is the perfect bike. Not bothered with a modern digital dash, it would be nice but not my main concern.
The main issue for me is reliability, and Yamaha is sound. With regard to looks, I don’t think it's outdated - personal choice, but I think it looks what a real bike should look like.

Best was clip on bars with custom made aluminum mounts to give the bike a sportier feel…. 20 years later.. 96k on the clock… still loving it. 98 VTR1000 and an 07 GSXR600 for the track round out the stable but I will never part with ole bessy….. keep it around if you can… maybe even park it for a few years? Bike is great.

I've been looking at FJR1300s for a few years now, but wasn't ready to pull the trigger for the price of a new one. I just found a 2010 model for $7K and bought it as my entry into sport-touring style bikes. I figured that was a good price point to see if I like that style before looking at newer models. I just wanted to say thank you for all the fantastic videos on the FJR for upgrades/instructions and general how to work on the bike. I'm really looking forward to this bike and your videos helped me make this choice!

You mean those god awful ipad-like things they're calling dashes? You do realise they're super delicate (and look pretty cheap) . I hope the switch goes well for you though and keep us updated. Btw, most modern bikes still don't have electronically adjustable screens (I can't ride without one now), or electronically adjustable suspension. The newer gen FJRs still stand up very well considering they're getting old now, especially when you consider their wood burning stove-like reliability. It's gonna be a tough choice for you!

I took a test drive on the new Tiger 1200 and was blown away! I've had an FJR in the past and thought this was so much easier to handle given the weight. I ended up though getting the 660 Sport though as I could flat foot the 600, and as I'm pushing 70 I wanted something even lighter than the 1200. I was blown away though by the 1200, and if I had to choose between that and the FJR, I'd definitely opt for the Triumph. Good luck. I traded my 2010 Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS for a 2017 Triumph Explorer 1200 XCA. I now have heated grips, seat, cruise, electronic suspension and multiple riding modes. My negatives are because I am both old and short (30" inseam). The Triumph is harder for me to maneuver around the garage but once rolling, no issues. Love the electrically adjustable windscreen like was on the Concours too. The new Triumphs don't have that but they are significantly lighter than my 2017 model. I get about 45-47 mpg (US) using non ethanol fuel and about 37-42 using 10% ethanol 87 octane. It is very comfortable on the highway but the cockpit is noisier than the Concours was.

The FJR is a great bike, I miss my 2012 with all of the mods I did including true dual exhaust, but, the Tiger is amazing! Far better than the FJR in every aspect except bottom end torque, once you get the Tiger to 3,500 rpm in any lower gear, hold on, it's about to get wild before you know it. 0-100 in 6.5 seconds, real world... not 0-60, 0-100 mph in 6.5 seconds with a good launch 🤯🤘👏

I'll admit the switch to the Tracer was drastic and for a moment I did have a little buyers remorse; however, I'm now loving it, it weighs less, more agile, two up is just as good as the FJR, and my God the CP3 engine is an absolute beast that sounds amazing.

I just recently bought bought my second FJR1300, traded a new R1250gs tb for it. Personally, I don't think we will see the FJR1300/GTR1400/PAN European touring type bikes again, they're dinosaurs that have become extinct. I really hope I'm wrong but dual sport bikes are just too popular now and manufacturers go where the money is. I did have the first gen triumph explorer in 2013 and it was a lovely bike to ride, the torque and sound is amazing, although the new triple does sound strange, more like a parallel twin.

Four years ago, I sold my beloved 2007 FJR because some dealers would not work on such an "old" bike. Not a gearhead, so I avoided bikes without an extensive dealer network. Triumph has 161; Yamaha has 877. Like you. I bought into the MT/FZ 09 family with a 2021 MT-09 SP. Yes, it has no shaft drive. But chain technology has improved a lot, and makes for a much lighter bike. Thanks for a great channel. Helped me a lot.

Great to see you and your videos. I've been a fan of the channel for years.
I traded my FJR last year for a BMW S1000XR.
I read a great article recently on how the sport-touring genre as we've known it isn't dying, it's simply evolving. The industry seems to be shifting towards lighter bikes all across the board, and these "adventure bike-inspired" machines are stepping in as the new standard in sport-touring. They're fast, comfy, can hold tons of luggage, and are significantly lighter than the classic sport-tourers we know and love (like the FJR, Concourse, etc.).
Bikes in the weight class of the FJR and now starting to be seen as heavyweight, full-blown tourers. For example, I also have an R1250RT (which is a similar weight to the FJR) and certainly not a lot of people are calling that bike a sport-tourer anymore.
*(Just my opinion) - I think Yamaha has been reluctant to update the FJR because of this industry evolution in the genre. Would the FJR have a place in the market after a full redesign? Perhaps Yamaha isn't comfortable pouring in all those resources for R&D and production and then crossing their fingers on sales. Maybe they would rather produce a bike like the Tracer, which fits this new bill a little better.
Many thanks for the decade of great content. I'll always be a fan. Be safe and enjoy.

  • @fontanajim

I owned an 09 FJR with after market suspension, putting 108k miles on it. Then I foolishly upgraded it to a 17 FJR ES. I like everything about the 17 ES, cruise control, 10% better fuel economy, slipper clutch with less grip force, smoother engine and six speed transmission. The Electronic Suspension is rubbish compared to the aftermarket suspension on my 09. The 17ES feels unhinged when pushed.
So now I am skeptical of any bikes with Electronic Suspension. You can't replace the spring, you can't dial in the sag or damping and are stuck with what the manufacturer thinks is good for you. Rubbish.
So for that reason I would avoid a Tiger 1200. Also I don't like bikes where a maintenance idiot light must be reset and a shop service manual is not available. Lastly there is fewer after market parts available for Triumph than other brands.
Enjoy your content. Best wishes on your next bike. Like you I am looking too.

Been following your channel since 2019 when I bought my used 2016 FJR1300A. You even helped me set up the suspension, but I still haven't messed with the settings! Having ridden a GT Explorer in Daytona Beach at EuroCycles, it's a fine motorcycle, but as someone who likes to do their own maintenance, it will drive you mad. Triumphs must be hooked up to their diagnostic connector to reset service lights, turn on TPMS sensors, and even fully bleed the ABS system. Practical Enthusiast did a review on his channel about a device from OBDProg (I think the M500) that will work in its place, but Triumph, Ducati, and Aprilia have all become finicky over the years about who can access their ECUs.
If you love riding more than wrenching, get the Explorer. You won't be disappointed. If you like wrenching more than riding, stick with your FJR. Keep making great content and whatever you end up on, please let us know Bryan!

I picked up a 2023 Triumph Tiger GT Explorer at the end of last summer. I only have 4000 miles or so on it, but I love the bike so far! Plenty of power and the brakes, suspension and electronics are fantastic. I had to make some modifications to fit me, but overall the ergonomics and comfort are also excellent. It is a tall bike, so if flat footing it is a concern, this is not the bike to get. A low seat is available, but it does not use a link, so lowering it is not an option. Someone might come out with a different spring at some point. Over all, I am very happy with my purchase.

The suspension on this bike is incredible, just so much smoother, going over tar snakes and little bumps is not even noticeable. The other thing you will love is the slip shifter, with a passenger there is no more of that back and forth bobbing when you pull in the clutch to shift gears. While it is not as smooth as a DCT or an automatic it is hardly noticeable. Plus has a great warranty, not that I plan to use it. Overall an excellent bike.

Compliments on the channel, such a joy to watch.
Owned a FJR for 4 months in 2005 (after owning a FJ1200), until someone ran into the back at a traffic light.
Bought a R1200GS as replacement and have ridden that for the last 17 years.
The FJR is still my favourite bike for the looks and ease of riding it.
Did test ride on a 2018 AE Explorer and its very likely I will decide to buy it later this week. Also, being a little older now I should be able to control my right hand a little better than 18 years ago (yeah sure ... ;-) )
So I'm actually moving away from the GS. Might do a test ride on the Versys 1000 before deciding on the FJR.
I'm becoming somewhat allergic to the Tracer/Multistrada/Versys design but will give the Kawa a shot.
My wife rides a Ninja 1000 SX and that bike is amazing, just a little too sporty for my liking but maybe the Versys can lure me in (but I doubt it, based on the looks).

You may have to get some of those high heeled boots from the 70"s to stand tall enough to ride the Triumph. 🤣 Plus a new 2023 Triumph is over $24K. Too rich for my blood. I still enjoy my '15A model. Dollar for dollar, I don't think you can beat the FJR for a 'lightweight' 2-up sport tourer. The overall inherent goodness of the bike is indicated in the few updates since the '13 was introduced. But... it's 150lbs. too heavy for me and as I get older, I do question that aspect. She can be a pig to manhandle in the garage or at walking speed, especially since it's a top-heavy bike, but once rolling the weight melts away and the FJR remains a solid performer. No, it doesn't have the latest, greatest tech but I don't want/need any of that stuff anyway.
Am I willing to or considering a trade right now? Nope, not yet. If/when I go strictly back to solo riding. I'd surely consider another ST, like the '17 & up Ninja 1000. I owned an '11 N1K and modded it for comfort- simply a wonderful bike w/loads of performance and lots of fun to ride. Yes, not as comfortable overall as the FJR but life is full of trade-offs. The N1K fits me well.
As for the Triumph Explorer, it's gotten good reviews except in one area- vibes- and that is an instant no-go for me. The other thing that would scare me off from that bike is the price- YIKES!

I hope that triumph eventually put a basic touring fairing on a lower version of the tiger 1200 (must include the 30 litre tank) and bring back the trophy name.

I am always changing over my inventory of motorcycles. Currently in process of doing that now. As a recent retiree I am going back to old school/less technology and focusing on the ride/ease of service/low cost/high reliability.
I do love the new bikes but am focusing on overall cost. Definitely try out the Tiger. I think you will find it quite enjoyable.

I too have been getting the itch to switch bikes…I’ve def looked at the new Tiger 1200. I’ve also considered the Verysis 1000, HD Pan America, V-Strom 1050, & even the new Suzuki GSXR 1000GT. I demo’d the GT & was very impressed. Soooo many great bikes available today…can’t wait for your ride review on the Tiger 1200 👍🏻

I change my Kawaski Concours after 4 years i was looking for another style of riding i never had a muscle cruiser so after looking at different motorcycles like the Yamaha Vmax , Suzuki m109r , Ducati Xdiavel , i bought the Triumph Rocket 3 GT and man talk about a change its a world apart from my Concours , the Rocket is a monster of torque i never experience somthing like that its crazy so powerful at any gears was crazy enough to install a quickshifter on it , so at a stop light i just twist that throttle and im gonne yes my Concours was quick but its nothing compare to the Rocket so fun its a keeper for sure.

Its interesting to read all the comments. On one hand, the accountant one, its difficult to fork over the $4000 tariff that we endure in the states. With that out of the way I would NOT recommend getting the explorer version with the bigger gas tank. The triumph gt pro is the way to go. The larger tank just makes a top heavy bike even worse. I think the regular one is better balanced overall, the bigger tank seems out of place.

Hey man, I've owned every variation of FJR over the years and still run a 2010 model. I too have been hankering for Yamaha to bring out a new FJR but nothing on the horizon.
My next purchase will be the, love it or hate it, Niken GT. I had a lengthy group test ride on this 3 years ago and it was the most fun I've had on a bike for a while.
I ran a Kawa H2SX SE for 3 years and this was a fantastic sports tourer but was a killer on tyres (4 in 11,000 miles) plus insurance was steep.
Good luck with your purchase and love the vids

I've ridden the slightly smaller Tiger and it was OK. Honestly "features" are a PITA to access when you are riding. I don't want menus and looking down for settings when I'm riding. If modernizing the FJR means more weigh, more hassle, more points of maintenance and more price; then no thanks. I just bought a 2nd FJR because it just works.

What are your thoughts on the new Moto Guzzi Stelvio? Not the same power band and not very capable from an off-road perspective but truth be told, even most GS or Tiger owners don’t go off-roading. It looks decent (not as good as a GS or Tiger) but does not have electronically adjustable suspension, and well it’s a Guzzi. But it does have a final shaft drive, costs much less than other adventure bikes and has an admirable legacy. I ride a Gen 2 FJR btw and absolutely love it.

I do love the Super Tenere and upright riding position , but .. but.. their aren’t many days that I don’t miss the big , smooth , stable FJR ..I am similar size and age as you , but that FJR with a RDL seat was about as perfect one only bike as it could get ..

No I’ll keep with my FJR and I live not far from the Triumph Hinckley factory in the UK, brought my FJR new in 17 with one purpose using for touring in Europe, when it’s been hammering down with rain on the autobahn and me and the wife are well into 3 figures the FJR has always looked after us, been solid, stable and had power to accelerate when needed. The fairing also has kept the worst of the weather off us as well. The reason I brought new was I knew the FJR was being finished hence I am keeping hold of it 🙂
When I look at some of the new bikes and what they are charging….and I paid £17.5k originally for mine hence another reason it is not going anywhere plus I just am not seeing anything I really would swap it for. Next trip this year Dutch TT Moto GP 😁
Oh best thing I have done is got rid of the crap Yamaha modified ECU changes they did when the gearbox change was done, I sent the ECU to Ivan’s Performance! Well worth it….

It seems a grand majority of bikes these days require 89 octane. The FJR is designed for good ole 87 octane. The FJR is heavy though plus I always have a bit of anxiety over the stability of the FJR on its kickstand unless its on a reasonably well leveled parking spot. Drive shaft will limit the selection of replacement bikes for sure. Goldwing would be on my list I think since it so comfortable and it mitigates the weight with it's walking gears (fwd & reverse).

    • @georgenauss2670
      @georgenauss2670 Год назад

I don’t like the kickstand on the FJR! I had a parking lot tip over! Very expensive. I purchased a bigger kickstand pad. And now leave the bike in gear! And also purchase from T Rex racing, engine guards, luggage guards and fork sliders. I also like the goldwing. My friend has one with the DCT. But on a trip his handbrake wasn’t working. So he used a strap on his front brake to secure his bike from rolling forward. Lessons learned the hard and expensive way.
