REJOICE when you run into TRIBULATIONS, because our TRIBULATIONS develops our PATIENCES, our PATIENCES develops our EXPERIENCES and our EXPERIENCES develops our HOPE. Our HOPE will not lead us to DISAPPOINTMENTS, because our knowledge comes through our TRIBULATIONS.
I’ve learned to look at every new project from a MAINTENANCE PERSPECTIVE. In the event of REPAIRS, I want to lay out the new project with enough space to make future REPAIRS EASY, especially when we get older and have limited dexterity and flexibility.

Most plumbers will tell you to avoid using plastic female threaded fittings if at all possible. In your case, that would mean using slip unions instead of threaded ones. You may also find that the brass check valve that you installed will quickly corrode if you end up with a well with hard water. PEX may be a good choice for your application.

My sympathies! When I did my rain harvest, I forgot to glue one of the 45deg elbows from the bottom of the tank to the pump. It was jammed in tightly so it wasn't obvious. The system worked but the tank would loose water over several weeks and I had to DIG IT UP and redo piping because I couldn't just take the 45deg elbow out and glue it. A bit frustrating - you are not alone! :)

As I've said before, I'm a handyman, and my least favorite tasks are the plumbing ones. Right now, I'm helping someone remodel a condo for sale, and I'm doing all the plumbing chores because there were no local plumbers available in the necessary time frame. The faucets were the original faucets, and I had to cut them out of the countertop with a reciprocating saw because they were so corroded. Replaced every single shut-off valve in the entire unit. Replacing the water heater, toilets, dishwasher, garbage disposal, shower heads & mixer valve knobs and trim. I hate plumbing. Give me electrical any day of the week.

    Some hints:
=> maybe I didn't see them, but I would expekt:
    - a minimum flow valve/line for to protect the pump against overheating
    - an expansion vessels in drinking water systems (special typ, for not to get Legionella into the system)
    - a safety valve against overpressure (for to protect the hole piping system etc...)
The minimum flow line should go back to the tank.
For to fill the system without failing the pump, the pump needs back pressure.
Normaly, you start the pump with a closed valve to the system, after the pump and the minimum flow valve.
You should have a pressure indicator after the pump to supervise the pressure after the pump.
(The needed minimum back pressure, you can find in the manual)
Than you open the valve after pump slightly, keeping the minimum pressure of the pump and fill the lines.
Step by step, the back pressure of the lines, you are filling, will rise and you can open the valve a little bit more.
Good luck for the next try
    cares jogi

@@aboulderlifeoffgrid Our local gas fitter uses vaseline (petroleum jelly) to prevent future gas leak at the joints after installation. Presumably it will work for water as well.

  • @kenutton992
    @kenutton992 Год назад +1

The one by the pump broke due to being frozen. You need to wrap heat tape around it. Also heat tape on where your pipe leaked outside due to freezing.

Those slip unions only need to be hand tightened. That's what the o ring is for. Just put a little silicone lub on them. And use schedule 40 always.

Interesting situation. The way it works for me is that the water is pumped uphill to a tank and then gravity does the rest. Of course, my land is anything but flat! Low point somewhere around 6600 feet and high point somewhere around 7400 feet.

When tightening pvc threaded fittings : hand tighten, then NO MORE that 1 1/2 turn after. I assume you know that pipe threads are tapered. The further you screw something on, the larger the outside diameter on the pipe. Yes you can easily break a pvc fitting when holding it by hand. You would have never been able to tighten it that tight if you were using galvanized or black pipe because pvc is much softer. That being said, PVC is less expensive, easier to work with, and fittings won't be rusted together in a year. Always make sure your pipe is compatible with what you intend to run through it. ie. water, diesel, gas, moonshine etc.
