def for usa mpg ratings. subaru japan still uses 5w30 in their engines. i used 5w30 full synthetic in my 18 legacy 2.5L.

my 1995 Civic has 210K miles. The original recommendation in manual is 5W-30 or 10W-30. I am in northern CA which never gets below 40 degrees. Should I go with 10W-30 or move up to 10W-40 due to engine age?

If the engine is not burning oil or having any noises, I would stick to 5w-30 or 5w-40. 10w-30 is fine for the summer months but pointless otherwise. SuperTech has a 5w-40 semi-synthetic which is cheap.

Why not 0w-30, better lubrication at start up .

For very cold ambient temps possibly.. The problem is, the other video I posted shows the loud clatter at startup. It was significantly louder at startup on a warmer day too. Thinner oil at startup for a warm engine with tolerances now worn, has less of a cushion with a thinner weight. This vehicle is in a very warm climate, especially coming up. A lot of variables to take into account.

@@SamslamminCars you’re right about it now, makes sense when you explain it that way. Sorry, I wasn’t attempting to damage the car or anything.
