    One of the many things I love about your videos is that you don't assume your viewers are mechanics. You explain every detail so that anyone can understand. Such attention to detail. Never condescending to your viewers. Had to laugh at the disclaimer with the razor blade. That is when my wife would have gone back into the house and left me with it. Thanks again for all the great videos.

    I purchased my R September 2019 and after watching this video I purchased the spare tire kit from Dap. Last week I hit nasty pothole on my way to work, and having spare tire saved me. The only thing was living in Boston and being winter l l used 17 inch wheels with snow tires, having an 18 inch spare in the front was a little funky.It was for a day and I drove no more than 8 miles. I can’t thank you enough.Keep up with the videos I’m enjoying my R !

    After my first pothole that destroyed a Conti tire and bent a Cadiz wheel, followed by a 2-3 hour wait/tow/Uber trip home from a bad part of town, I bought my spare, jack, and wrench from ShopDap a few years back. The trim wasn't readily available and I didn't see the value in the foam block. Thus, I cut my own trim and just wrapped the tools in bubble wrap to minimize bouncing around in the underfloor space.
    I've had to use the spare twice since then. Once out and about, and once just from my driveway. Either way, definitely worth it! Now that I'm trading/selling the MK7R, I'm planning to pass the kit onto another owner.

    I honestly can’t believe I just watched an entire video of someone installing a spare tire in a car that I don’t even own! 😀I do appreciate the general OEM+ levels of modifications. Matches my tastes almost perfectly. 👍🏻👍🏻 I’m thrilled my Focus ST came with a full size spare. Had the car 3+ years and used it 4 times. Had my previous car 10 years almost to the day and the spare never saw the light of day (other than tire pressure checks, of course 😎). Its predecessor, a GTI VR6, went 9 years and only had one flat that I can recall. Not sure why the ST seems to be cursed.

    Charles, thanks for this (and everything else you do for the community). The part about "walking" the seal out from under the rear trim piece is critical, and I could have easily not even noticed that the seal was underneath the trim and left it be. Because of your clear instructions, I did it the right way. Super-happy to be rolling with a spare now as I'm out in the sticks and travel in some lousy cell coverage areas. Rock on!

    Thanks Charles, saved me some confusion with disconnecting the sub cable. I didn’t get the foam or trim kit, but finally have a spare tire. I kept the jack and tire kit from my TDI but failed to keep the spare from it, not realizing the R would not have a friggin spare tire. I was told one wouldn’t fit. It fits, even with out the trim kit, though it is wedged in there. Rest of the Jack and kit fit fine, might toss a few rags in there to keep it from moving around.

    My Golf R MY2019 has the factory fitted spare here in Australia.
    Has to be cost savings for the States. It's alot of money for a hatchback.
    Still not sure why people in the states don't like hatchbacks but are ok with soft SUV's? Which are essentially raised hatchbacks hah.
    Love hatchbacks and wagons, RS6 wagon is coming to the states can't wait to see more videos on them!

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 5 лет назад +2

      As far as I can tell, it's mostly for weight savings. Also, Australia has always been strongly in support of retaining a spare tyre (and a full-sized spare where possible) because of the long distances and harsh road conditions between towns once you're left the city behind and struck out for the outback. Space-savers are virtually useless under those conditions...and the inflation kit is generally even worse than useless.

    I have a 2016 Golf R (Canada). I ordered all these parts except the replacement trim piece. It came in handy a year later when I picked up two screws in one tire. I was able to get home from work without trouble. I even stopped at the local Canadian Tire on the way home and they patched my tire and put it back on the car.
    Bring a tire bag with you so you can toss the bad tire inside to keep your trunk clean.
    This is one of the best 'mods' I've done to the car. Cost ne 728$ Canadian with tax, duty and shipping for the entire setup. Expensive, but in Canada, everything cost more.
    Theres no real need to trim the plastic for the tire to fit. You just have to finangle it just right.

    In Europe (AUT) it is as follows, the spare tire is a optional extra. If you are willing to cough up the extra coin you will get it. The reasons why you dont have it as standard are as follows: Trunkspace (for the magazines it is "very important" to compare them), weight ( fuel efficient), costs, and saftey. Most of the costumers are not able to change a wheel anyway, so instead of the option to change the wheel you get more trunkspace.

    You have a spare as an option, it's about plus 100€ here in Germany. It's not a standard, because it conflicts with some options you may want. Like, the Dynaudio sound system or the variable loading floor. Additionally, many cars come on run-flat tires. Hence, you don`t really need one. At least here in Europe.

    Will you add that road side triangle? Seems like the US spec GTi and Rs didn't get them. I could be wrong.

    Hi:
    At the intro at 17 seconds there is a picture of your yellow golf r and it shows what appear to be VW o.e.m. splash guards installed. My dealer tells me VW does not manufacture or sell VW splash guards for a Golf r. Are these units on your Golf r from VW or where did you purchase them? If they are Golf r splash guards would you have the part number for the set?
    Thank you!

      Front - 5GV-075-116
      Rear - 5GV-075-105A

    I have an MK6 GTI with the spare. Can an 18 inch wheel fit in where the spare is?

    I don’t think the new Jettas have a tire either! Glad my 2015 Jetta has it and a nice tool set in the snazzy grey foam

    Can you take out the peg that holds everything still ? I’m trying to get a flat surface to build a amp/subwoofer system but I need a flat surface.

    This kit interests me but I live in Canada, by any chance would you know any place that'd sell it?

    As a serial VW audi owner it drives me nuts, I currently have an 2015 RS5 it comes with the stupid fix a flat kit, I got an S5 donut off of ebay to at least have a spare (it will only fit the rear because huge front brakes) but it gives me options if I get a flat...

    Bump. Charles, will this kit fit a Mk8 Golf R? I’ve read the wheel will fit but have you tried the foam?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  2 года назад

      Foam fits. I haven’t found a rear trim, the 7 is very different. The tire “fits” in the well but not perfect.
      I haven’t tested the tire on the car yet.

    Would this spare tire be the same diameter as the 19 inch OEM rims on a 2016 Golf R and safe for the AWD system?

    Hey Charles! Do you know if this kit will fit in an MK8 R and do you think that donut would fit over the It’s brakes?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  2 года назад

      Donut will NOT fit on the front. the spare will fit in the 8, the foam also fits. The rear trim will not. BUT the spare fits with out replacign trim.
      Some of the tools are different with 8. I just dropped the spare in, and kept the tool kits the car came with.

      @@HumbleMechanic so it could be done but when there’s a flat in the front I’d have to switch with one of the wheels from the rear and put the donut in the rear?

    You know what's funny? We have the same bathroom scale. You know what else is funny, I used it to weigh my new wheel/tire combo to compare it to stock.

    I need a kit for my camaro. 6th gen camaros don’t have one either and I do think it will fit had they put the fuse box on the side. Now idk if a spare will fit.
