  • In our final travel vlog from Scotland and the UK we explore the amazing St Andrews, a gem of Fife and one of the most... ⬇ More Below ⬇
    Today we tackle the amazing St Andrews, exploring the cathedral ruins and scoping out the views across St Andrews from atop of St Rules Tower!
    As our time in Scotland comes to an end we can't help but feel so impressed, blessed and in love with this country! Fife in particular has blown us away with it's beautiful seaside villages, huge list of things to do and so much going one - not something always associated with the UK.
    St Andrews is so much more than just the home of golf - it's got a very special presence and some incredible tales about it's church, cathedral and St Rules Tower as well.
    Scotland has definitely been kind to us with the weather, we've had 95% sun during our time in Fife! That's far from normal, but any chance to explore St Andrews in the sunshine is a win in our books. Speaking of our time in Scotland, if you want to see more of our trip here's the full playlist of our time in this epic country - bit.ly/30ApLuo

    I just wanted to say thank you. I've lived in Fife my whole life and when people travel to Scotland they usually only try the usual tourist things, but they always miss Fife and we have so much amazing things. So thanks for showing it off and hopefully encouraging more people to come explore

    I’m a bit of a history nerd (Rhett). I’d love to explore Scotland. It’s so rich with history! Looks like you’ve had some great weather (except for the chilly wind) during your stay there too🌞

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  5 лет назад

      Definitely a lot of history for you to dig into, Rhett! A few things we had to strip from the videos cos we, or our guides, went so deep into the history it would be TMI for most people... not for you!

    By the way...I really enjoy the 'teaser' video that you show at the end to give us just a glimpse of what's to come. Well done!

    *The* oldest university in Scotland. If it was a Sunday the Students would have been walking the pier. St Rules church was built on the site of an older Celtic Church, stemming from the 4th century CE. The opening scenes of Chariots of Fire were filmed on the west sands at St Andrews.

    I should be used to it by now but every time I watch one of your videos I’m surprised by the quality of it. The way everything is shot and edited, the music and just the whole vibe of it all is amazing. You always manage to find the perfect balance between talking to the camera and showing off everything around you; between giving us lots of interesting information and letting the pictures speak for themselves. Keep up the wonderful work , I’m looking forward to all the future adventures you’ll be sharing with us :)

    Was at St Andrews just the other week with my missus and kids, meeting my brother and his family over from the states. First time I'd been in 10 years and first time my kids had been at all. They loved it. Even the castle, which didn't have a great deal to see, kept my kids busy and occupied for a while. Didn't have time to go to the cathedral.Pity, many of Scotland's castles, cathedrals and abbeys are mainly ruins, thanks primarily to Henry 8th and Cromwell.

    Hi guys! I love your videos and the quality is amazing. I noticed in the videos that Stacey is mostly using a Sony camera now and I was wondering which type it is. Also are you still using the same camera for the videos? Maybe you could update your page on the gear cause it's really interesting to see! :) Keep on posting! Lots of love

      Thanks for reminding us - we do need to update our page! Stace uses the Sony a6400 for photos, but we still use the GH5 and lens combo on our site for video

    I have to ask, how do you add the subsciber count and animated bit onto your videos, on the bottom left? is it just a clip you have on your editing machine and add to each video manually? or some other fancy system youtube allows?

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  5 лет назад +1

      I came up with the idea about how we could make it one day (Dane), so Stace designed up about 8 or 9 frames in photoshop and exporting individual images of the progress. I turned it into a video file with the clicks etc. The text is live, but the same font as the other elements. So its all custom, meaning I can adjust as we grow and its unique to us.

    Pity you didn't have time for the castle. It has a couple of interesting and unusual features. One is the bottle dungeon. This is a pit cut straight down into the rock of the sea cliff on which the castle stands in the shape of a flattened wine bottle. There is a round floor then the walls slope inward to a small round opening like the neck of a bottle about 15 feet above. Once someone was down there escape would be quite impossible without the aid of a ladder or rope.
    The other interesting feature is a rare example of a siege mine and counter mine. I believe there are only three or four surviving examples in the world. When the castle was under siege the attackers tried to dig a tunnel (siege mine) through the rock towards the castle. Their intention was to undermine the outer wall so that it would collapse and allow them to rush in through the gap and capture the castle. The principle defence against a siege mine was a counter mine. The defenders, hearing the sounds of digging, would themselves start digging their own counter mine with the intention of intercepting the attacker's mine before it reached the walls. This is what actually happened at St Andrews. The defenders, using the sounds of digging to guide them, and after one wrong turn, managed to break into the siege mine at the top of the leading face. This made it quite impossible for the attackers to continue digging and the siege mine had to be abandoned. Mines and counter mines were a very common siege technique but very few have survived. Mines were still being used to dig underneath and blow up enemy trenches even in the First World War.
