  • Another Scottish road trip starts! We're in Perth and Kinross exploring Loch Leven Castle, chatting Mary Queen of Scots and eating at Loch Leven Larder. Scotland continues to... ⬇ More Below ⬇
    Welcome back to Scotland - Perth and Kinross are home for the next few travel days and vlogs to come! Our first day exploring is the epic Loch Leven, taking the ferry aka wee boat over to the Loch Leven Castle. Scottish yarns really are the best and Loch Leven has plenty to share, mostly related to Mary Queen of Scots.
    Loch Leven was home to Mary Queen of Scots on a few occasions, but also where she was imprisoned and famously escaped from in a brilliant way. It's simple for us to jump on the wee ferry boat over to Loch Leven Castle but in her day things were obviously a lot trickier!
    Loch Leven Larder was our lunch spot, an enormous dome sitting right on the loch!
    🏰 Our accom at the start was The Townhouse, you can see the reviews and pricing here: geni.us/ij5U1 or check out their site here: thetownhouseperth.co.uk/

      I am from Scotland and would LOVE to visit Texas. People tell me that lots of Scots migrated to Texas so Texas might remind me a bit of Scotland, for starters you deep fry everything, you had to get that habit from the Scots for sure.
      I hope one day I can visit the US but I am a poor student with no Job. One day.

    When we visited Scotland we were told that the staircases in the castles are built in a specific spiral. If someone is attacking and coming up the stairs they cannot raise their swords because of the spiral. Those protecting their castle coming down the stairs can weld their sword at the attacker. once you have been in the castles you understand this. Also the doors were such that you had to bend down to go into the next room. This also didn't allow someone welding a sword to come rushing into a room as they could not hold their sword up high ready to slash someone.
    Thank you both for allowing me to travel with you. An old kiwi now in Aussie with family in Scotland your trip brings back so many memories. Thank you both. Scotty

    Perth is definitely beautiful, the very reason I moved here almost a decade ago. I don't get to explode it as much as I use to. But gosh darn it's soo pretty even in the city itself.
    I will say I've been told NZ and Scotland share a lot of similarities although Scotland is colder, we really haven't build bar the cities and farms, there soo much of our land completely intact bar a wee road up it.
    Glen coe is probably my favourite drive though. In a car completely surrounded by mountains and nature, nothing else.

    • @DanegerAndStacey

    A couple of others have discussed the pronunciation of Loch Leven, but you mentioned the small spiral staircases you had encountered in places. These were defensive and most turned to the right as you go up. The person above could easily use their sword to fight people below as most people were right handed. The central pillar gets in the way of your sword arm if fighting upstairs. However, in the castle's that were owned by clan Kerr (Ker/Carr), many spiral stairs turn left as you go up because the majority of the leaders of clan Kerr were left handed. A left turning spiral advantaged them, while disadvantaging a right handed person.

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  4 года назад +1

      Yeah that was awfully Kiwi of us at the start with the pronunciation - you'll see when we reference it later we learnt our lesson. Interesting about the shift of stair case direction and sword fighting, love those stories.

      @@DanegerAndStacey My aunt, who had now lived in Scotland about 3 years, still pronounces it Leh-vehn, despite living less than 5 miles from the Loch. Yet the town, and river, she has no problem with and pronounces them correctly. Sometimes I think she's having my uncle on ;-) They first met when my uncle went to NZ with my grandfather at age 11, staying there until he was 16 when he returned to Scotland. After he retired and had been single again for a few years, this woman contacted him and asked if he remembered her. He said that if course he remembered her, and an online relationship bloomed. They met for the first time in nearly 50 years when she visited him in Scotland 5 years ago. When my Uncle visited NZ for my mother's 80th he proposed (there had been a few visits back and forth in between). They are visiting NZ again at the moment for her oldest brother's 75th.

    the reason you find narrow spiral stair cases is because its a key part of the defence of these castles ,one lad with a pike can defend against a regiment.
