- I genuinely thought I would not want to touch any fried fish for a couple of months after this but instead, I am now looking forward to summer finally coming (still waaaaaaiting) and us going back to the beachside to pick up more seafoody sustenance!
Thank you in advance for your patience while I unload all the important fish info in the first four minutes of this video, haha.

As a Scot I can hardly believe I have just spent nearly 20 minutes watching a video of someone eating fish suppers. But, it was great. I loved it. Well done.
Hi there,
In the old days Fish and Chips were served in Newspaper at Li'aba d'oro. That was my local and cost £1 for a Fish supper. The man retired and his son took over also opening a takeaway next door. Went downhill from then. All about profit. The best chippy in Edinburgh is next to the Hearts Football Stadium on Dalry Road, called the Gorgie Fish Bar. Fantastic Fish and Chips, and the Steak Pie supper is amazing. Best chippy in Edinburgh period. I'm heading up to 60 years old so i know where to go. Gorgie Fish Bar unbeatable.
Steve in Fife.
Stevie D yeah that's a good one on Daley road . St Andrew s in portobello is another good one
Good fun! The last time I was in L’Alba D’Oro was about 20 years ago and Scott Hastings of British and Irish Lions fame tried to skip the queue and was told to wait his turn. I still respect them!
I'd go there solely for that reason, Mac !
@@blackbob3358 Forgotten I'd made this post! Edinburgh's New Town probably has more rugby nuts per capita than anywhere else in Britain.
In that context it was amusing to see 'oor Scott' being telt.
Thank you so much for the map! I love this small detail which is a big help
Haddock much tastier fish imo. Impressed you have picked up a lot of the key points about freshness, but sometimes not the shops fault as it depends on customer to keep the turnover going. No idea how many of them fry in beef dripping which is the traditional method in England, but it really makes them taste delicious. I laughed out loud when I saw my first deep fried pizza. No wonder the oil gets a bit polluted on flavour. Enjoyable video thanks.
when Sean Connery used to visit Edinburgh to see his mother he used to visit the “international” fish & chip restaurant and claimed it was the best he could find but regrettably don’t think the restaurant exist anymore unless they moved to another location
In my childhood the fish n chips used to be wrapped in newspaper .... anyways it would have helped with some close shots of the food
Head over to the fife coast for the best fish and chips
The wee chippy in anstruther being the best ;)
Love your videos, guys. Been living in Edinburgh since '84 and I still learn a lot from you. Top tips! Thanks.
Glad to hear that, that's quite the compliment! Thanks for watching! .)
@@Kakibot You're welcome. My wife and I watch your vids all the time and now frequent quite a few of the coffee shops/eateries etc that you've recommended over the years. Thanks.
Great info. And thank you so much for the map! It's really helpful.
Yay! I'm glad someone actually tried out the map, was starting to worry it was borked! .D
So hungry after watching this. Loved the background music too. A cool 80s vibe. Nice
Hi I am from Edinburgh and I just wanted to say when they say do you want sauce with your fish and chips they’ve mean a special Edinburgh sauce that is a mix of brown sauce and vinegar you can only find it in Edinburgh and I recommend it it’s nicer than it sounds 😃 Globetrotter defiantly dose it
you get sauce everywhere except Glasgow
In Glasgow and the West you get the civilised accompaniment-tomato sauce.
Such a delightful channel!
Such a delightful presenter!
Salvatore's on Roseneath Terrace, (EH9 1JH) serve a brilliant haddock and chips if you are ever in the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh. They also serve Pizza, Burgers, and Vegetarian food as well.....highly recommend it !!
never buy in a closed box as soon as you close the box condensation changes the quality it sweats. always eat fresh cooked on a plate
+1 on that fried to submission! :D Gotta have that crunch!
Salt n Sauce is such an Edinburgh thing. The cup final between Hearts and Hibs was even nicknamed the Salt n Sauce Final. The. Globetrotter has been rebranded this year but still sells a superior product.
Hi Kakibot, great fun. Looking forward to test some fish. When you film kindly try to get some nice close up shoots of the things you eat or drink. Makes everything more interesting if you kind of having a good spot to sitt and enjoy the food also. All the best.
I can highly recommend Cafe Piccante on London Rd and order Piccante Chips 😉 with haddock or smoked sausage.
As a Scottish guy living in Germany this was food porn 😂
Should be salt n sauce in Edinburgh though. I’m from Glasgow but always liked the Edinburgh way when over there.
In glasgow we prefer salt & vineger👍
Thank you 😊 💓
Would you make a video on Paisley? Its attractions, fish & chips , parks, ...
A little tip
just ask a couple locals if they know what the best time is to go to the chippy to get it fresh
Still all the centre and the west side of edinburgh to explore for great chippies.... ;) My favourite is the BBQ Fish & Chips ,in Corstorphine
Have you tried Bertie's Proper Fish and Chips? Looking for a place when we arrive next month that is walking distance to our airbnb. And Berties was less that 1.5 km. Also looking to get good beers too.
What’s the best way to get to Portobello from Edinburgh for tourists? Thanks. Love your channel.
There are multiple buses headed that way from the wider city centre - 26 & 19 probably among the best options. But I also quite like taking the train from Waverley! Drops you off a bit further from the beach, but the walk towards it is enjoyable .)
Thanks! 💕
Yeah I recommend Franco's , the one I went to was the one next to summerhall near the meadows
Oooh that’s a good location for us! Thank you for the tip!
The recent correct answer is Doctors (a pub). Also try the local Innis brew. I was there two weeks ago. Just perfection. Even better than Poppies in London (my second choice).
Not gonna lie, seeing that king rib in the chippie gave me immediate cravings.
I hope someday you do a list like that about my country food, Brazil. =)
“Fried into submission” 😅 Same!
I have heard the same regarding the freshness of the fish and the fishy smell.
Thanks for doing the work for us! 👍🏻
yes if the fish tastes strong its probably from block fish caught by a factory ship and is probably the cheepest fish you can buy.
tersse b should be haddock though
I don’t know which one won. St Andrews? Sorry can’t understand
Soggy chips are a curse on humanity. The jocks failed to "medal" again !
Yeah soooo I need an update on the info in this video... I can't travel to a country in the UK without having a good F&C.
Pretty please?
Scrolled through this but no mention of the Fishmarket down by Leith? A recent show picked that as the best place in Edinburgh if not Scotland. Also Edinburgh chips require salt and sauce which is a mix of your HP sauce with vinegar so no need to carry your own! Other areas like Glasgow only have salt and vinegar, where you live matters!
@@AJ-PFbat depends where u go bud but where i am its made on site by watering down brown sauce with vinegar.
@@AJ-PFbat that little debate has been held elsewhere lol

@@AJ-PFbat funny cos its split between people who have had both lol what a clown!
in fact its no even split, 11 comments with 10 saying its a mix of sauce and vinegar....or water
your eyes are fkd lol
your obviously the "authority" of chip sauce in Scotland LMAO
Thank fk i never went to your shop lol
The bantry in eyemouth...best ever..
The one in Leith opposite the carriers
Portion size not great where I come from they tape the box shut to hold everything in
Polystyrene containers for Fish and Chips is such a no no. Take the food home, and on the way the contents steam, then open at home and find your previous crispy fish and chips are soggy.
The Montgomery has 1 of the best fish wnd chips in Edinburgh
Gorgie Fry is pretty hard to beat!
Great fun! Wondering if you shot all the places in 1 day (from your outfit) because I can barely even finish 1 portion of fish & chips in 1 go, especially from the Fishmarket
Haha that would be a real feat! This has been shot over a couple of days - I used to try and keep the same outfit for all the shooting days! .)
If you haven't tried near the meadows #fish quite new amazing
Cany beat a fish supper washed down with Scotlands Irn-Bru
Loved your tapes but you omitted prices on the fish plates
7:54 what’s the location?
Giovannis at Northfield beats them all.
Pierinos in Leith is the best fish supper
cafe picante!
Have you tried Gold Sea on Ferry Rd?
Not yet, no! Is that a personal fave of yours?
@@Kakibot yes! My wife is from leith and when we go back to visit family I love that place. We love following your journeys. Takes my wife back. We’ve seen a couple of her faves in Roseleaf & Mimi’s. Our favorite pub is Queens Arms in New Tiwn
Can you see dolphins near Edinburgh?
Great, informative, well presented posts on the city of Edinburgh. Good work - you have another subscription! :-) You should try a little Scottish-Filipino cafe/restaurant in Gorgie sometime. It's called Cafe Presko. To my knowledge it's the only Filipino restaurant in Edinburgh and as far as I'm aware it hasn't been v-logged by anyone else yet, so you'd have an exclusive! Oh, and my wife, Harriet (A Filipina, of course) works there (but make sure you if you do decide to go, let me know and go along on a day she is working there as that's when it tends to get be at its best ... as reviews tend to reflect this). It's a great wee place. Keep up the good work! :-)
Thanks for the tip! Always on a lookout for interesting unique places! .) Will definitely visit sometime soon .)
Excellent! :-) Here's hoping you enjoy. Let me know when you plan to visit (if that's ok) and I'll let Harriet know. We both enjoy watching your vlogs.
I'm hungry!
The biggest mistake right away is using HP sauce. If you’re having sauce on a supper then you should use chippy sauce.
What is chippy sauce?
@@AlexYounger , an east coast of Scotland delicacy.
@@stewarthill3891 Thanks. I’ll have to try it.
Kakibot Please list the fish & chip shop that donates food. It sounded Spanish or Greek. I want to add it to my list of Must Try for Edinburgh!
You two should have soo many more subs. Your intel, gorgeous, beatiful in a sexy classy way and the info and research needs mucho respecto..Dont stop dolface, we in Alba love you my dears, i kid you not. 🙋
Awww thank you, I appreciate that! It's so nice to see that someone realises that there's a lot of work behind these videos .)
The best chippy in the world is the New Diamond . Rannoch Rd . Perth
CHIPPIE FLAME WAR!
Go! We already know that Rapido > Piccante from your brother .D
You're doing it all wrong using HP sauce . Its just not the same as chippy sauce . Apart from that great video . :)
THANK YOU!
What is HP sauce?
Who doesn't want a night time snack of sustainable fish? weirdos.
The Fishmarket is meant to be good too :)
No "beware of the seagulls" when you eat outside and on the beach?😉
The best fish&chips is the fish market New haven it's cooked while you wait
I've heard good things about that place! Hoping to get there before it gets too cold outside, I bet it's super nice to eat while sitting next to the harbour!
Women ☺️ and wederful people 😊 and nice country 👍👌🤗
You didn't tell us how much you paid for these fish n chips. They all look very average and much the same as each other. From what I've seen price wise , they cost a fortune over there
I recommend the Fishmarket (Newhaven). Best fish and chips I've tried to date! I've reviewed it on my insta: @benjilauonscran
Thanks Benjamin! This recommendation keeps popping up and I now feel long overdue giving it a go!
We had Fish dinner there as we stayed round the corner in Newhaven, and it was really good, indeed.
And nothing from the fishmarket ? I'll tell you tomorrow ;)
Note: in August 2021, The Globetrotter got a new name. It’s now Saltwater.
Need chippie sauce
imagine not getting chippy sauce, your off you head hen
That's half of the magic!
You can't use HP straight out of the bottle!
I found it bizarre, that at these fish and chip places you were not provided condiments, and had to pack your own around??
Oh nooo, it's just that they sometimes have the tendency to put on A LOT of salt so we thought we'd take the condiment responsibilities into our own hands! .)
@@Kakibot I always get salt and vinegar on my fish supper but wait till I get home to put sauce on it cause I dont like my fish swimming again
It’s not a “chippy” place but Laila’s ok Cockburn makes an amazing fish and chips
Interesting, that would probably never have crossed my mind! Thanks for the tip .)
you should have covered them in salt and sauce
if we stay in the EU we will not have any fish the future will be pie chips fried mars bar
Rather than just tell us this was expensive or this was the most expensive, tell us the exact price you paid.
For a while i thought this is buzzfeed XD
BuzzFeed Scotland nowhere to be found and I'm here to steal their niche spot! .D
Tail end was best. Lalba dora is decent not amazing. New plaice down newhaven good.
Fish and chips comes out of a Sephardim Jewish kosher tradition. Flanders in Belgium particularly Antwerpen was settled by Jewish refugees from Iberia ( Sepharad = from Latin "Hesperides" ).
Hello beautiful 🌹
Don't even think about going to a fish and chip shop in Edinburgh, they all expect you to put sauce on it, because there all bad. A good fish and shop would feel insulted if you put sauce on it.
Sorry, been here a number of years, had to cross the border to England to get a good one.
.... And I Come From Ireland....
Love my salt and sauce ,
Load of shi? Salt @ Sauce they hit yeah with as well as £ 8.00 our £10.00 pounds for a fish Supper..... 🤪
I am born and bred Yorkshire
Can not listen to an American telling me the history of fish and chips in england !
Good thing I’m not an American then 🎉
She’s not American. I am, and she doesn’t have an American accent; not even close. Get over it!
Troll
Haha chips tastes like potatoes 🥔
Get some sun darling .
Know a lot of tanned redheads in Scotland?
They are not as crispy because they have been sitting in a styrofoam container the entire time you were talking when you should have been eating!!!
Don’t understand why food is put on top of other food
Makes it greasy and also transfers tastes! Fish o top of mashed potato yuk
too much chatter sorry
The fish came from Jewish immigrants from Portugal and Spain... the idea of eating fish came from them? What a load of rubbish.
having people who you can tell dont usually eat fish and chips gets so boring,go and review salad or something,
The beauty of RUclips is that you can now go and make your own video! Live your dreams!
Nowhere. It's fish and chips. They all suck.
Don’t eat any, then. Suit yourself.
