Making Leatherwood Cold Process Soap (Dealing with an accelerating fragrance)

  • Leather soap has always sold well for me, but I challenged myself yet again to deal with the fact that it is the most accelerating fragrance I've ever used. I've tried ordering from different suppliers too with the same results. Happily, I've always managed to get a decent loaf of soap poured despite the acceleration. However, I've always missed having a batter liquid enough to do some swirls.
    Over the last few years, I've also been developing a new, palm free recipe and I'm very happy with it. It produces a hard, luxurious bar that allows me to have a fluid batter to work with and swirl to my heart's content. So, I thought I would see how this recipe, soaping at a lower temperature, not over-blending, adding the fragrance at the last moment and combining the leather fragrance with sandalwood fragrance would work. The result was a batter that moved so slowly, that I ended up with a fairly watery batter.
    When I used to see leather soap at a local music festival, it was the guys predominantly who were attracted to this soap. Thusly, I've designed this soap with the guys in mind. Selecting cool colors and black or other neutrals, including browns is a safe bet in designing masculine soaps, but also cutting down on contrasting colors is usually a sure bet too. I call it, cutting down on the fancifulness of the design.

    Congratulations on your success using leather jacket. It was so bad for me I'm not sure if I would use it again. You tamed the mighty dragon!

      Hi Jane! Did it seize for you too? I've challenged myself over and over until this happened.

    • @janehall2720
      @janehall2720 5 лет назад

      It totally seized on my try. I was able to make it but there was absolutely no design in the soap. As I reached for a spatula, it became like tub margarine. It was all I could do to press it in the form.

    Turned out really well this time, no accelerating! Well done. Looks gorgeous.

    This is quite a sophisticated looking and masculine bar. Love the dark, dark blue with the gold. I like your videos, you are such a nice, open and honest person, easy to relate to. I would amend more than one factor then afterwards I wouldn't be sure what did it. That sounds very familiar indeed!

      Hi Nina! I'm so glad that I discovered that a concentrated mica blended with soap batter actually maintains it's glittery metallic quality through saponification. Yep! I love that streak of gold too.

      Ha Tanya I live in Tasmania and whilst waiting on the interview tomorrow with Clyde and George (Dawn Organics) , thought I’d check Clyde out , saw leatherwood thought oh he’s using our honey, but alas no nothing to do with the Leatherwood.

      Oh dear. I made a pie recently. You can see it on my Instagram. It was the Atlantic Beach pie and it's delicious. However, I just needed to squeeze in some pie making before getting on with other business. Making a video of something make the process much longer. That includes edit time. I promise to make another cooking video in the future. Thank you!

    Yay, a success! I really like the gold concentration to achieve the benefit of actually seeing the gold sparkle in your soap. So, thanks for that tip. ??? Do you insulate your soap? This is one of my new investigations, as I've discovered some soapers never insulate!

    • @vibranttravelswithClyde
      @vibranttravelswithClyde  5 лет назад +1

      It the soap starts to get very hot, I won't insulate it. It could crack. Otherwise I do insulate to gel.

    So much prettier in the close ups here. Thought it was pretty before, but WOW! So grateful to get to benefit from your artistic approaches to soap making.
    Is that a new mold shape too?
