I’ve been a nurse for 12 years, I recently went part time to purse my bath and candle business. These are tough times however if yu make good products ppl will buy. I am an oncology nurse, so we have the same job. In Portugal I have to tell and explain all the side effects of radio and chemotherapy. Skin is one of the most arm and soap needs to be very skin safe… etc. I started making soap to help my patients and it was so successful that I thought to create an etsy account and sell. I didn’t ask for money for my patients but I was told that during treatments they can’t use anything rather than tap water. But I thought in creating a safe soap so they could clean, cause only water was very stressful for lots of them. I am starting a new chapter and create what the customers want and not what I want.
I recently started my own soap business and I can relate to everything you said. It can be scary, to say the least, and there is soooo much work behind it. People think that it's merely about making soap, but there's so much more to it. Personally, I have gone in debt to get things up and going, and it's going to be a long time before I show a profit. Nonetheless, I do love what I do and, despite the troubles that I know lie ahead of me, I will give this my all. Oh, and I'm also 75 years old.
I love it! You sound like someone who has the grit to make it happen. You never know, you might find a nice niche and be surprised how quickly things take off. What kind of soap are you making? Decorative? Earthy? Boutique?

I'm also selling scrubs, lip balms, bath additives, etc. Not going too decorative at the moment as I'm trying to get stock built up and they're too time consuming. It's gonna take me a while to get my store stocked as I want it but, I think, I'm off to a good start. I hesitated to launch it at first because I was getting so many side orders (like 300 from one person) that I was afraid of not being able to keep up. I have a pretty good handle on things now, but little rest involved. Thanks for the positive vibes.
As a soap maker, the more decorative soaps are hard sellers for me. Most people say they are hard to use because of the awkward shapes. You need to find out what your customers like not just what you like. Good luck going forward.
I'm really soaking up this feedback and actually feel so much better knowing the decorative soaps are actually hard for others to sell as well. My customers definitely like my boxed (regular line) soaps so I am sticking with those. Thanks for the comment and for stopping by.😊
Same for me…they want practical products that they can use. My decorative soap sits on the shelf. I have branched out away from soap to herbal and therapeutic products.
Year 2022 was a hard it for me as well as a soapmaker. I've been into Markets and find it really hard to sell my decorative soaps. I had customers looking for normal soaps only. I, too considering some changes in my soap business.
I make melt & Pour soaps and My Mom says my decorative soaps are "Too Pretty" to use. I have sold some but as good as the ingredients are that make up the soap I doubt they'll ever be used, which to me defeats the purpose of spending so much time to make them look attractive and eye catching to be bought. I started making soap as a creative outlet for myself in this medium and it looks like I get nice comments from my wife and others but honestly I have sold more unscented and uncolored soaps than anything which is rather confounding to me! 🤔

Still I have now subscribed, and love your open and honest spirit, your reflections, the space you are taking to take stock of where you are and where you have been these last chaotic 3 years. I’m learning from you even with the difficulties. I’ve been Soaping only 7 months, it feels like an unstoppable passion, and an expensive hobby too unfortunately. I would love to make more of it, and sell in local stores, markets etc. Regulations, printing, packaging, marketing, social media-ing seems all rather daunting to me right now, so I have decided not to rush. Resisting the pressure from friends to sell, sell, sell, now, now, now! Their praises are beautiful and encouraging, though they may not appreciate the work, the time, and the investment involved. I know I'm pretty late here, but I just want to say how refreshing it is to hear your doubts and struggles. So many soap makers only share the good, or gloss over the bad. Some even pretend their success is all due to hard work, and I think most people in business can attest there's a little bit of luck, and dare I say, magic involved. I hope whatever you chose to do, you're doing well mentally, physically, and financially. I've been in Business making bath and body products for 20 years next February. it is very difficult. there's been many highs and lows. but it's worth it. just have to keep pushing and making changes to make it work for you. So I shall continue on..
Just subscribed! As a soap buyer - I do not like fancy soaps. If it's too pretty, I know I will not use it - so I only buy what I intend to use - natural, simple soaps.

I started my soap business at the end of 2020. It has been a challenge to find my niche. Oddly enough, my niche is making bath & body products that represent my sense of humor. I was a cartoon character in a former life. RUclips supresses new content creators. Keep doing what you are doing. People will find you despite the algorithm. Took me 3 years to get to 1000. And, all I do is run my mouth.

I don’t make soap but I do make bath bombs and other bath products and I have been doing this for awhile, my decorative bath bombs are not selling to good this year, it’s not just in the hand made soaps unfortunately. This is the first time I've seen your channel. I subscribed. I've been making soap for years but never got a chance to turn it into a full business due to being sole provider and living in a very rural area it was hard to think of driving 75 miles to hopefully make a sale if I even got time off from my job. I've had them in shops on a small scale but no longer have that avenue since they have all closed.
thanks for commenting and for subscribing! I just looked at a retail space today because a few friends who own a spa want me to partner with them. The one thing that is exciting about owning your own business is that you never know what the day will bring. I completely understand not turning it into a full business. Sometimes a side business is the best decision. You could try platforms like Faire, Abound and others for wholesale to get more shops:)

Don't be discouraged from the video. It has been a crappy year for a lot of businesses this past year, but you just pivot and redo the business plan and keep moving. I'll be sharing all of the changes I'm making this year here!
I don’t know what the future brings. This is my 1st month, batches that I sold and it was difficult because in Portugal we are a small tradicional culture country. Ohpra uses a soap made in a “ach brito” brand, that is making soaps very simple and affordable and we can’t beat that. For now I see my soaps as an hobby but I would love to be successful in it. Baby steps and never loose hope.
I can completely relate to what you are saying. Enjoy the fun of it and see where it takes you. I'm still seeing inconsistency here among the different platforms that I sell on. I think we have to continuously pivot directions when something doesn't work. I always have a trick up my sleeve. Sending you good luck and hugs across the ocean to Portugal.
I have delayed quitting my full time job for 2023. I revamped my packaging and will be making my soaps simpler. I never got into the piped tops, but havent seen them selling for other soapers either. People can only have so many "too pretty to use" soaps.
You've got that right! The piped soaps are off my list for 2023. People like my boxed soaps, so we're going with that. Good luck to you with the new packaging and simplifying. I think that sounds great!
The RUclips algorithm didn’t very often show your videos. Maybe that is why you haven’t had many views. I don’t know I’m new to watching soap RUclips and am new to soap making for fun. I usually see the same channels. I hope things work out well.
Unfortunately the market for small business soap/bath and body makers is very over saturated. Everybody and anybody that starts making soap thinks they can sell it. I feel there is no easy way to stand out as a soap maker. You are always trying to cater to the current trends. I have been making soaps and other stuff for over 10 years. I’ve always gotten great feedback on my products but I don’t sell a whole lot. Usually around holidays there is a spike in interest/purchases but otherwise it is sporadic. I’ve thought about just selling off all my supplies but I haven’t made that decision yet.
It's hard to come to that decision when you have invested 10 years. I get that! I just now got a wholesale order for a new store, but it could be a storm of new orders for wholesale or nothing. You can't predict. The one thing soapmakers can do is niche wayyyy down and sell things that are very specific for a group of people and only market to them. That's what I would have done differently. I may do a chatty video on that.
I love making soap too but like you I’ve notice a lot less business. I’ve had to not make so much soap. Had to cancel my business phone number to save money. And yes I had to make my flat top soaps, people didn’t want fancy decorated soaps anymore. But I’ve thought about giving classes in my soap room. I’m not selling as much anymore cause of high prices. I’m having older customers call and pre-order and pay, then I work on the order. It’s a hobby now not a soap business. No one wants to buy a soap bar that is $7.00 to $11.00 a bar. You have to learn to rethink so I thought of teaching people who want to learn how to make soap. I hate to see my business go down hill but I am 67 and I’m to tired to stand up all day making soap and selling it. I wish you good luck on your soap adventure and hope all goes well. I’m starting to get rid of some of my soap making equipment.
I think you have the right idea with the soap classes! If that is something you would like to do, there will always be a market for that. Now, I have noticed some prices going down a bit. For instance, I was able to find olive and coconut oil at pretty low prices this week, which was encouraging. I think it is all about being able to pivot when times get tough. It sounds like you are doing that by scaling down and focusing in another direction.
During the Pandemic, I went back to school for Herbalism, now I'm slowly growing my own herbal and bath business, would love any advice you are willing to give. Good Luck and one more subscriber closer to 1000.

I think novelty soaps are just that. Maybe you could get a return on them by putting together gift baskets to sell with them. I don't buy novelty soap because it's so pretty and I don't want to use it, but I would by a gift basket with novelty soap, bath bombs, loofah, body butter, etc. to give as a gift.
I love it! My Grandmother came over from Bari, Italy and my father was the Head of School at the Florence International School not too long ago. We plan to go in the next few years.

I only make soaps that I would personally buy/use myself and I'm very simple. Many vloggers encourage us to make items for our target market... well, I see myself as my target market. I played with fancy tops using spoons and chop sticks, but that's just to test my shaping skills for fun and experience. I love the creativity of all the designs ... just not practical for me.

Just an observation: If your soap it too pretty people might not want to use it as soap. They might buy it one time, put it in a fancy dish as decoration and never use as intended.

For me this is just an expensive hobby (very expensive because of the EU laws) and a form of therapy. I hope Your next year will be successfull!

As someone literally just starting out (as in I’ve only made one practice loaf so far), what is the number 1 (or 2 or 3) advice you would give? I know I’ll make mistakes in the beginning, but trying to learn from others as well.

If you're in this to make a lot of money, stop now. If you're committed to this and nothing else, maybe. It will consume your whole life. The ingredients are getting more expensive by the day. There are hundreds of soapers out there. Between all the legal stuff, the financial stuff, marketing, making & boxing. Shipping, etc., etc. It's just a hobby for me. I sell at a store on consignment. If i want to make soap, i do. If i don't feel like it, i dont. But i don't do it to pay the bills. You need to get a lot more consistent soap making under your belt before you even consider selling. Just my 2 cents. I've been making soap for 10 yrs.
I’m in a similar spot I’ve made about 5 batches so far I’ve been taking it slow ..when I decided to start I watched so many post on RUclips and some mentioned to take time not to rush so much to do not sure of where to go from here….like she posted not sure what questions to ask….
Hard decisions are never easy to make. I need to have a good long talk with myself and make some hard decisions but I have to get my thoughts in order first. As for any advice you can give...I would love to know how to get into retail stores. I have Faire and Rangeme but have not gotten anywhere with them. I hope your final decision is to stay with making soap but I also understand if it is to move on. I am always here for you :)
Hi Laura! A few thoughts: As far as wholesale goes, all you can do is get on those platforms. I am on them too and found that people are just not buying as much this year, so wholesale has also dropped. I truly believe it's an economy issue, so you really just need to wait it out. In terms of local stores, though, I walk in and talk to someone and always get my soaps in those stores. The local stores are my best money makers. Start there:) I am not giving up the business entirely, but certainly making changes. Luckily, I may have to outsource more, which is good news for you!
@secondspringnaturals6984 I wish I had stores closer to me that would sell my items and then there is the talking to them part lol. Hey more outsourcing and then I don't have to worry about getting my items into stores lol.
I would love to be able to offer advice on this, but unfortunately it's against FDA regs to make medical claims unless the product undergoes testing, which is generally way too expensive for a small business. Anti-aging, acne fighting--all of these things are medical claims and even Etsy will now remove listings if they have them.

I make soap, and Buy soap. I do not sell soap. I study the organic soaps, the specialty ones such as Sea Moss, Dead Sea Mud, pure Castle soap infused and simpler soaps. I do not buy any soap with fragrance oil, only essential oil or how they smell left alone. I also seldom buy mica soaps. I would have a pure, homeopathic line. I love them! Green tea, Aloe Vera, Goat Milk, etc....oh .....and my new love ...tallow.
I decided to shut my business down this summer. It took so much of my time and I have 5 kids and I was not seeing the financial benefit. I tried for several years to make it work. I still love making soap and will always make soap but I wrestled with that very hard decision. It is hard to put your “baby” aside.

High inflation now and a recession coming next year folks. Don’t quit your day jobs!! No way ppl going to pay 10$ for a bar of fancy soap when they struggling to put food on the table. In tough economic times luxury items always fall off the importance list

I have a few tips I could give about growing the channel. I will tell you that with 6.3k subscribers and about 50k views per month, my income stream isn't much... but it is consistent. I know I'm pretty late here, but I just want to say how refreshing it is to hear your doubts and struggles. So many soap makers only share the good, or gloss over the bad. Some even pretend their success is all due to hard work, and I think most people in business can attest there's a little bit of luck, and dare I say, magic involved.

I've been in Business making bath and body products for 20 years next February. it is very difficult. there's been many highs and lows. but it's worth it. just have to keep pushing and making changes to make it work for you. So I shall continue on..

I started my soap business at the end of 2020. It has been a challenge to find my niche.
Oddly enough, my niche is making bath & body products that represent my sense of humor. I was a cartoon character in a former life.
RUclips supresses new content creators. Keep doing what you are doing. People will find you despite the algorithm.
Took me 3 years to get to 1000. And, all I do is run my mouth.

I don’t make soap but I do make bath bombs and other bath products and I have been doing this for awhile, my decorative bath bombs are not selling to good this year, it’s not just in the hand made soaps unfortunately. This is the first time I've seen your channel. I subscribed. I've been making soap for years but never got a chance to turn it into a full business due to being sole provider and living in a very rural area it was hard to think of driving 75 miles to hopefully make a sale if I even got time off from my job. I've had them in shops on a small scale but no longer have that avenue since they have all closed.
thanks for commenting and for subscribing! I just looked at a retail space today because a few friends who own a spa want me to partner with them. The one thing that is exciting about owning your own business is that you never know what the day will bring. I completely understand not turning it into a full business. Sometimes a side business is the best decision. You could try platforms like Faire, Abound and others for wholesale to get more shops:)

Don't be discouraged from the video. It has been a crappy year for a lot of businesses this past year, but you just pivot and redo the business plan and keep moving. I'll be sharing all of the changes I'm making this year here!
I don’t know what the future brings. This is my 1st month, batches that I sold and it was difficult because in Portugal we are a small tradicional culture country. Ohpra uses a soap made in a “ach brito” brand, that is making soaps very simple and affordable and we can’t beat that. For now I see my soaps as an hobby but I would love to be successful in it. Baby steps and never loose hope.
I can completely relate to what you are saying. Enjoy the fun of it and see where it takes you. I'm still seeing inconsistency here among the different platforms that I sell on. I think we have to continuously pivot directions when something doesn't work. I always have a trick up my sleeve. Sending you good luck and hugs across the ocean to Portugal.

I have delayed quitting my full time job for 2023. I revamped my packaging and will be making my soaps simpler. I never got into the piped tops, but havent seen them selling for other soapers either. People can only have so many "too pretty to use" soaps.
You've got that right! The piped soaps are off my list for 2023. People like my boxed soaps, so we're going with that. Good luck to you with the new packaging and simplifying. I think that sounds great!
Don’t quit your job!!! Recession coming next year, no way ppl going to spend 8-10$ on a bar of soap when they’re struggling to put food on the table.
I’ve bought one decorative soap in like two years, I prefer a bar that is easy. Low top soap maybe some texture on top etc.

Unfortunately the market for small business soap/bath and body makers is very over saturated. Everybody and anybody that starts making soap thinks they can sell it. I feel there is no easy way to stand out as a soap maker. You are always trying to cater to the current trends. I have been making soaps and other stuff for over 10 years. I’ve always gotten great feedback on my products but I don’t sell a whole lot. Usually around holidays there is a spike in interest/purchases but otherwise it is sporadic. I’ve thought about just selling off all my supplies but I haven’t made that decision yet.
It's hard to come to that decision when you have invested 10 years. I get that! I just now got a wholesale order for a new store, but it could be a storm of new orders for wholesale or nothing. You can't predict. The one thing soapmakers can do is niche wayyyy down and sell things that are very specific for a group of people and only market to them. That's what I would have done differently. I may do a chatty video on that.
I love making soap too but like you I’ve notice a lot less business. I’ve had to not make so much soap. Had to cancel my business phone number to save money. And yes I had to make my flat top soaps, people didn’t want fancy decorated soaps anymore. But I’ve thought about giving classes in my soap room. I’m not selling as much anymore cause of high prices. I’m having older customers call and pre-order and pay, then I work on the order. It’s a hobby now not a soap business. No one wants to buy a soap bar that is $7.00 to $11.00 a bar. You have to learn to rethink so I thought of teaching people who want to learn how to make soap. I hate to see my business go down hill but I am 67 and I’m to tired to stand up all day making soap and selling it. I wish you good luck on your soap adventure and hope all goes well. I’m starting to get rid of some of my soap making equipment.
I think you have the right idea with the soap classes! If that is something you would like to do, there will always be a market for that. Now, I have noticed some prices going down a bit. For instance, I was able to find olive and coconut oil at pretty low prices this week, which was encouraging. I think it is all about being able to pivot when times get tough. It sounds like you are doing that by scaling down and focusing in another direction.
During the Pandemic, I went back to school for Herbalism, now I'm slowly growing my own herbal and bath business, would love any advice you are willing to give. Good Luck and one more subscriber closer to 1000.

I think novelty soaps are just that. Maybe you could get a return on them by putting together gift baskets to sell with them. I don't buy novelty soap because it's so pretty and I don't want to use it, but I would by a gift basket with novelty soap, bath bombs, loofah, body butter, etc. to give as a gift.

I found similar things. My more basic soaps sold much better. I'm also moving into formulating lotions, perfumes, and body products.
My creams always sell very well, so lotions are a good idea. I'm so glad i'm getting the feedback on the more basic soaps doing well vs the decorative ones. Who knew!
Know your market. Before you make anything, know who's going to buy it. If you don't know who will buy it, how can you expect it to sell? Good luck!!

I only make soaps that I would personally buy/use myself and I'm very simple. Many vloggers encourage us to make items for our target market... well, I see myself as my target market. I played with fancy tops using spoons and chop sticks, but that's just to test my shaping skills for fun and experience. I love the creativity of all the designs ... just not practical for me.

You're smart to do that. Start it as a hobby and see if it can turn into a business.
Just an observation: If your soap it too pretty people might not want to use it as soap. They might buy it one time, put it in a fancy dish as decoration and never use as intended.

Hi! This is the first time I see your video and I watch a lot of soap videos! Weird. I am a teacher too and I make soap. I have a web shop but I don't sell anything. For me this is just an expensive hobby (very expensive because of the EU laws) and a form of therapy. I hope Your next year will be successfull!

As someone literally just starting out (as in I’ve only made one practice loaf so far), what is the number 1 (or 2 or 3) advice you would give? I know I’ll make mistakes in the beginning, but trying to learn from others as well.

If you're in this to make a lot of money, stop now. If you're committed to this and nothing else, maybe. It will consume your whole life. The ingredients are getting more expensive by the day. There are hundreds of soapers out there. Between all the legal stuff, the financial stuff, marketing, making & boxing. Shipping, etc., etc. It's just a hobby for me. I sell at a store on consignment. If i want to make soap, i do. If i don't feel like it, i dont. But i don't do it to pay the bills. You need to get a lot more consistent soap making under your belt before you even consider selling. Just my 2 cents. I've been making soap for 10 yrs.
I’m in a similar spot I’ve made about 5 batches so far I’ve been taking it slow ..when I decided to start I watched so many post on RUclips and some mentioned to take time not to rush so much to do not sure of where to go from here….like she posted not sure what questions to ask….
Hard decisions are never easy to make. I need to have a good long talk with myself and make some hard decisions but I have to get my thoughts in order first. As for any advice you can give...I would love to know how to get into retail stores. I have Faire and Rangeme but have not gotten anywhere with them. I hope your final decision is to stay with making soap but I also understand if it is to move on. I am always here for you :)
Hi Laura! A few thoughts: As far as wholesale goes, all you can do is get on those platforms. I am on them too and found that people are just not buying as much this year, so wholesale has also dropped. I truly believe it's an economy issue, so you really just need to wait it out. In terms of local stores, though, I walk in and talk to someone and always get my soaps in those stores. The local stores are my best money makers. Start there:) I am not giving up the business entirely, but certainly making changes. Luckily, I may have to outsource more, which is good news for you!

So my goal is to open a small business selling anti aging soap. May you give me some tips.
I would love to be able to offer advice on this, but unfortunately it's against FDA regs to make medical claims unless the product undergoes testing, which is generally way too expensive for a small business. Anti-aging, acne fighting--all of these things are medical claims and even Etsy will now remove listings if they have them.

I make soap, and Buy soap. I do not sell soap. I study the organic soaps, the specialty ones such as Sea Moss, Dead Sea Mud, pure Castle soap infused and simpler soaps. I do not buy any soap with fragrance oil, only essential oil or how they smell left alone. I also seldom buy mica soaps.
I would have a pure, homeopathic line. I love them! Green tea, Aloe Vera, Goat Milk, etc....oh .....and my new love ...tallow.

I decided to shut my business down this summer. It took so much of my time and I have 5 kids and I was not seeing the financial benefit. I tried for several years to make it work. I still love making soap and will always make soap but I wrestled with that very hard decision. It is hard to put your “baby” aside.
