I really enjoyed the Highway 61 episode. I’ve made that trip myself. I’ve studied that history myself, and I think you did a great job telling that story in 30 minutes. The one thing I think you missed is that where the crossroad monument is today is not where the crossroads were in Robert Johnson’s life.
Do what you do, Josh. You know what to do. It’s why I’m here. It’s why I look forward to this every week. I setup for this the way a person does for a movie, a television show, the theatre… This is my favorite channel, and I dig a number of RUclips channels. Your ‘filter’ works well. Keep it running.
The music history associated with hwy 61 and the artists whose lives were wrapped around it was the focus of the video. How did people get that wrong? These complaints are from from people who thought this was a top 10 show. Pay attention people. Josh covers and presents amazing content with warmth and humour. I'm looking forward to more topics in big chunks. ✌
Came back to watch this for like the THIRD time for that jam on the way out. I love the tone and the open string drone-y stuff with the octave on it.....that's right up my alley. SO good. Props to Addison on the drums here too.
I don’t know what folks were on about with objections to the highway 61 video. I found it focused, informative and interesting. I love your videos like this. Keep ‘em coming!

Good, 89 comments. Maybe you will see this. Don't Change!!! Your seemingly casual approach is perfect. You all beautifully obscure the work and care in crafting what you do. Two thumbs up! Rocking episode. Josh you rock and music is impossible not to like when one experiences it for so many years. The contrast possible in sounds, from diffent instrument combinations makes music a magical thing in life. From a Stradivarius, human voices, to a snare drum and wah wah. How can one not love sounds and melodies? Music feels like a beautiful language and it can also be a jibberish fun playful language and all that we can imagine it to be. Love peace and happiness.
Don’t worry or even look at the comments (including this one) after hand. Just keep doing what you are doing. You guys are on point and what you are doing is the reason we long timers tune in each and every week. Keep up the good fight, we have your backs 👍
I came for the pedals, and was blown away by intelligent conversation with three eloquent human beings. Do more of this kind of improv. Thanks for outing Butch Walker as producer for that Green Day release. Walker's recording studio is RubyRed. Good stuff.
Guys I loved the “How Black Music Changed America video”. Some people just want to complain and share they’re opinions so they feel important. That’s Fine. But the work in that vid was awesome. No boundaries in music man. I’m from North Carolina so I grew up on an excellent mixture of blues, rock, and roots-type music. The color of the person playing didn’t matter it was the emotion. The mojo.
this is my favorite format - playing with pedals and trying stuff. I don't care about the discussion of youtube comments, though, including this comment.
I like this format a lot. I also liked your defense of the Highway 61 episode, which I thought was informative and interesting. I've studied music history and thought you did a good job of covering a complex topic in a short amount of time. Keep doing what you're doing, it's unique and never boring.
Love the New and Notable idea. I’d like to see it done per pedal category, so we could see a demonstration of their differences. Choosing an overdrive, for instance, is a massive undertaking, once you’ve watched 4 or 5 videos on it! So a new and notables overdrive episode would be cool, to see. I can imagine you discussing the circuit types and similarities, and it would be coherent. I also like free for all, so you guys do you. You can do no wrong by me.
I hate copy right laws! Could you imagine if he played a pedal for every genre. Hear me out, for instance the Greer Tomahawk right mimics a 57 tweed so why not play a song from 1957. I am totally agreeing with you. Plexi Drive “The Who” so on and so forth.
North AL Old Guy opinion Re Hwy 61 vlog: Its a narrative that I pretty much know so no surprises to me. But you guys did a fine job for what it was. You weren't trying to write a book or do a 2 hr film. For an under 30 min RUclips Vlog, it was great. I just wished you'd shown more scenery out the car window.
The Highway 61 was awesome. I was concise, entertaining, and informative to the point that I want to go a little more in depth on the subject. I think you hit the mark.
I loved the Highway 61 episode... especially the focus. Concentrating on that narrative put 'the Delta' into geographic and historical perspective for me. My uncle used to come back from his merchant marine trips to the US in the late 50's and early 60's and play the 'black music' (and jazz) he was into, so I was making the same journey of discovery that Keef, Eric, Jeff, and all the Brits did (albeit I was much younger) here in Australia, where we thought of ourselves as a little British outpost. Yes there's many, many more 'moving parts' to the story of 'rock and roll', but just as one might concentrate *just* on 'clipping diodes' as one story in the history of 'overdrive', drilling down and creating a coherent narrative is hard; I think you got it pretty 'right'. Once one hears/sees *all* the stories (which I'm sure/hope you're working on), then perhaps folks will appreciate the way a rich tapestry of interwoven stories comes together to inform a history that is far more nuanced than if you just started at the beginning and chronologically listed *every* event, slavishly omitting *nothing*. My 2c. I really liked how you made Dylan a centrepiece, because I remember my father lamenting the 'blasphemy' of Highway 61, which my uncle and I loved :-) BTW... I *nearly spilt the tea* when Josh started singing the South Park-esqe "Goin' down to NASCAR" tune, because I had *just* watched the SP episode where Cartman wants to drive NASCAR but fears he is "just too smart and too rich"! ISYN! Josh's gotta check that out if he hasn't seen it... spooky.
Keeping the topic narrow and focused is perfect. I enjoyed the video. Even though some info was familiar, most was new and I learned a lot. Keep doing what you’re doing. I dig it!
I did not comment on that episode, but actually, thanks for explaining the "highway 61 revisited" tittle, because even if I did knew the whole acoustic/electric controversy, I did not linked the title from that album to that story in such a way. I did loved the physical context of the story. Keep doing exactly that and don't read so much comments about pleople that didn't even watched the video.
These shows are fantastic, but I’m spending so much money on pedals and adding to my collection. I love it. The educational stuff is and was my main draw to the show, I’ve come to appreciate Josh and JHS for so much more than a pedal maker. The history is priceless. Like, I didn’t k is the Robert Johnson time line was more like two years that he disappears. Thanks guys, keep it up. Addison killing it on drums again, nice!
I love the layout of the mono board. I think it is a good idea to give us a quick taste of what each one does, then jam on however your fancy moves you.
A reply from the future past. Thank you for exposing me to pedals or related gear I never would come across in a natural like way. I am also equally non-thankful* for said exposure. So please keep putting out content I can view in the future and comment on as if I’m part of the past conversation.
We love your show! You guys have been a great source of fun, clean entertainment, your jams are amazing, we wish all RUclips would have more channels like yours. We send our love ❤️👏👏
I’m excited to read Escaping the Delta. I thought your take on the early ‘scene’ as a regional folk scene that was later marketed as ‘Blues’ was really fantastic. Thanks for that perspective. Also, I’m terribly excited to read the book that you’re working on. The JHS Shown has been a treasure trove of information to me. Thank you for all of it & keep up the great work.
Keep up the awesome documentary work. You all have taught me so many things on the technical side of things. Any content, and ESPECIALLY knowledge based content, is very much appreciated. Keep up the great work!
1. I like this format - the new/notable pedal explorations. Even if it's kind of a quick taste of them, it keeps me aware on a different level than other methods. 2. That hot topic: Agree with you that the internet gets too excited and wants to "well actually" and correct/inject and project when it's not even on topic. While I watched the episode, I began to think: Here's something that's from the vault - so it's past vs. present, I'm not familiar with what the patreon content is (shame on me, I know) and I realized that it was honing in on a narrow subject and had a time limit. With that, I was interested in just hearing what was presented, and not looking for all the things that only I would have thought you left out. To me it was like "This is hwy 61, 101. The quick dose of a broad topic that stays in a narrow lane of delivery, and if you want more, this is the spark of inspiration." Everyone wants to find what 'you missed' based on their knee-jerk responses, instead of thinking about what you were presenting in the first place. Glad you took the time to point this out as a hot topic.
Your mind sets are on point for current times. We are not in position to tell or instruct people what to think. We are not in any position to judge people and nor should the people that do judge and lable and smear, cancel and cast out arrest, ruin financially, wreck families, ect… With that said. Love and light to all… Thank you guys, amazing as always. Are you hiring?
I love the hot topics! I learned so much from the highway 61 video. Always look forward to learning from JHS. Probably my favorite channel on RUclips and I don’t play guitar.
As a white history teacher from Ohio (now teaching in California), I appreciate the addressing of how hard it is to teach history and narratives. It is always hard to decide what to include and what not to include without wanting to offend anyone. Also hard because as a teacher, you want to include everything! Love the interviews and allowing people to share their stories! My wife makes fun of how much I get into the episodes. The history of pedals and their intersection with culture is super interesting. Plus the jams 🔥💯
Sorry but our history is offensive! We didn’t much care till after the civil rights movement. Along with that we had some crazy wonderful people that appeared on the seen. it’s terrible it happened but what young people need to understand is that history has a way of repeating itself if we don’t discuss the hard topics and address them then we are setting ourselves up for failure. We have to keep history a live not necessarily tradition. Nor am I responsible for writing history to be honest our jobs as people is to somewhat be a leader even when we think we aren’t. Think of it as anytime you stand up for right your gonna have a fight. The extent to what someone seems worth it to fight is completely dependent on ones desire to be right. Hope that helps some.
@@waltergrace565 He means white history. Revisionists want the success of white history erased to placate non-whites, but there is no point at which they will be satisfied, not until whites are extinct.
I love the channel and right after watching the Highway 61 show it inspired me to rewatch the Muscle Shoals doc. for the 4th. time- and now I come to learn Josh is from Muscle Shoals!!! I'd live to know how he feels about that doc. and the misicians in it! Love youse guys!
@@devinbehrens9931 that’s weird cuz I have a few of each company’s pedals and all the JHS pedals seem to be more than Wampler pedals. Unless your talking about the JHS 3 Series.
@@devinbehrens9931 Not sure what that's about. Ratsbane is not overpriced at $149, and it punches above its weight too. You can pay a lot more for a Rat type pedal. A 5 in 1 type thing from JHS would most likely be $229 considering the Bonsai and Muffuletta.
I definitely like this style of show. Talk about the pedals up front so we know what we’re looking at. It’d be great if we could see closeups of the pedals when you talk about them. I want to see detail! And I’m all about the looseness. More looseness!
I came for the pedals, I stayed for the history. Excellent. Song: Lightning Crashes by Live. Danny Devito is in It's Always Sunny. Also: Low Double Neg is great. I had a comment about how I thought the episode seemed to say slavery wasn't an issue in Delta. It was clarified, I deleted my comment.
Oo I just picked up some new pedals too. GFI Systems Specular Reverb 2 and Clockwork Delay 2 as well as a Blackout Effectors Special Twosome Deluxe, And a Neunaber Seraphim mono shimmer Reverb pedal. I got all 4 for only 350$! What a great lady to give such an awesome deal.
I loved the Highway 61 episode, it was interesting, cool and really well made! Thank you so much for episodes like that! Maybe all the fuss about it was the video title, which might have been a bit broad, subjectwise, but just like you said, we gotta follow the narrative you are sharing with us, and not yielding about all the other stuff you are just not talking about. Cheers!
I have the Reverb, Preamp from Flamma and they are very concerned about creating new things!! With this delay, you have an 80s looper too! They have cabs simul ,a crazy one, loopers, drum looper.....and they're not crapy at all!!! The best new pedals I have at this time! Don't think it's bad cause it is from China! Things are changing guys
June 30th was an interesting/exciting day because one of my best friends had his first child. And MSU (which live 24 miles away from) won the College World Series today.
This was a really cool episode--and my favorite record from one of my favorite bands for record time! Also, really love the move to more varied content.
I think the “comments” people want to show they are superior because you missed this thing they sort of know but really just show their inability to listen intelligently. Yes, the history of music is complex and many layered but it is not reductive to just focus on one aspect, especially when you clearly defined your point of reference. Also, I love the Flamma Delay…it sits next to my H9 and Nemesis and just brings some different and unique delay flavors to the mix.
I got my Conaglia in yesterday. I am impressed. It’s ridiculously good. The wiring is point to point. The box looks amazing in person. If he starts selling these for $450 the hype would go through the roof. I think people see the lowish price and think it’s a gimmick or something. If ever there was a pedal we are sleeping on it is the Lollygagger Conaglia.
I’m a history teacher. I feel your pain. The ‘story’ is so much more complicated than slogans or political moments. Knowing the boundaries of the story that you are telling is the hardest thing. Before I saw that episode I had never heard of Robert Johnson. Because of that episode I now understand the pivotal role that Johnson and the Delta played in the musical revolution that occurred in the twentieth century. The first lesson we teach about watching documentaries in history is that the creator can’t cover everything. Good creators, such as yourselves, are honest about that!
Man, I really, really, really, honestly don't want to shade you at all, BUT, you're watching a live stream about GUITAR pedals, by a GUITAR pedal company, on RUclips. Which means you either sought out the video or just randomly stumbled upon it. Either way, you seem invested enough to comment, so I'm assuming you're a guitar player of some sort at least. You also said you were a teacher, which then I can only assume you're not a child or even a teenager. But anyway, I just have to ask - You really had no idea who Robert Johnson was? Like, I said, I truly mean no disrespect. But is this really what the world has come to? I can appreciate your comments about teaching, as I myself was a teacher for over a decade, but this is just disheartening. Hopefully you have the summer off to dig deep, man. If not for yourself, for the children.
@@waltergrace565 I am a guitarist, but I’m in Australia, so the history of rock and roll doesn’t factor large in our nation’s story. That’s the beauty of history though, there’s always something else to learn about!!
If you can see Low in concert, I highly recommend. I saw them at the Rockefeller Chapel in Chicago when Double Negative came out... brilliant. Nothing like sitting in a pew being bathed in rolling noise.
The RUclips Community believes that every video they watch is SPECIFICALLY made for just them. So when you cover a topic and they feel like they don't agree with your point of view or approach, they get extremely hostile. It doesn't help that, as you mentioned, the socio-political climate these days is pretty tough. Keep doing what you guys do, don't let the people who DON'T like what you do change what you do.
Had not seen the Hwy 61, so I just watched it. Very informative, more please. Best part of this video was Josh "playing the pedals." I count on those innovative jams!
Also nevermind about the Knobbery. Literally when you pulled the box to show them. I instantly paused the video and started looking. When they weren't in the description, I was like "what the heck Josh, withholding such valuable information"........then I hit play 😂 I cant even begin to imagine the misunderstandings you deal with hahaha
Glad you addressed snarky comments because you guys have a fantastic and entertaining show here which is building a resource that will be useful to every musician in the future. Ironically Sister Rosetta Tharpe does in fact intersect with the Robert Johnson to British blues boom lineage because she played in England at hugely influencial blues revues that were attended by Clapton, green, beck, page et al and so along with the likes of howlin would and muddy waters she left a visceral and undeniable imprint in the UK by direct cultural osmosis. At least one performance is captured on RUclips. However your right to point out that your trying your best and there's no need to be sarcastic, you guys would for instance do a great job of analysing the sonics of historic blues recordings and I'd be very interested to read the up coming book
Watching over dinner as us West Coast folks have to watch after work - Lightning Crashes (Live, from Throwing Copper Album) The Jam @ 47 min had a really nice 'Stone Roses' vibe
Josh, your playing is on point, the second nature and ease of it is very impressive. And please make a tape delay and fuzz 2in1 pedal. I need it for nefarious things. Peace and stay safe
That Triple Graph pedal IS Jack White; it sounds like the tones on so many of his songs with White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, etc. The old telegraph style switches are a cool addition. Damn pricey, but if you want to sound like Jack White, there you go.
In response about the Delta video, I loved it (I didn’t connect Highway 61 to Sun Studios to ‘The Crossroads’ before it). I just think in Internet TL;DR land, the title was perhaps a little misplaced. If you’d called it ‘The Influence Of The Delta On Rock And Roll’, it probably wouldn’t of upset the outrage crowd. I love when you have small parts of the world so responsible for so much music. I live on the London/Kent County border in the UK, and I’m 10 miles away all around from the birthplaces of the Stones, Bowie, Frampton, John Paul Jones, Squeeze, Ginger Baker, Kirsty MacColl, Jeff Beck, The Pretty Things, Boy George, Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, The Damned and a big chunk of punk, and Vox Amplifiers. It inspires me to know they all walked around the places I have.
On hot topics, I thought the highway 61 episode was fine, I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking this is a very specific story not the history of rock n roll! Some folks on RUclips have an agenda and they are looking to add there views to any given story, they look for key words that trigger their rant, shame but true , keep up the good show!👍
As someone who is a plug straight into the amp guy, I like this for sure! I'm here to learn and challenge myself to expand my music knowledge outside of my personal bubble. The rainbow machine trend is a cool thing to know about even though I'm never gonna incorporate it into my pop punk playing just as one of thousands of examples. The more education you can cram in, imo, the better Personally I don't prefer live videos, but I enjoyed this all thru and would settle for a live show.
To the Hot Topix question, I think the confusion was the title. It was very broad ie here is the complete history of black americas contribution to rock music. This would require an approach of REALLY long or a mile wide and an inch deep. Instead this was like black americas contribution to rock music: part 124 - the story of highway 61. Hope that makes sense. Great episode. Great show. Keep it up.
I love these shows so much more than anything on network, cable, or streaming television. Yeah… I’m a nerd.
Lol yep
I couldn't agree with you more

the history stories are why i watch this show. there are millions of pedal demo channels, you do something unique and wonderful.

It's called the Nascar Delay because that's what it sounds like when the cars pass by.
That's what I was thinking too, similar cars passing at high speed with small gaps create a repeated sound
The doppler effect?

Thanks so much!
If the JHS Show becomes a touring band, they should be called “The Lolligagers”… I’d buy tickets every time.
Damn! I miss A on bass and N on drums, but that jam with the Lolligager pedals was perfect! Nice job guys!
This show was great keep doing the format. Pedal intro before jams and discussion. Fantastic, keep it up! -Tatoehead
Joshua “I almost took my shirt off!”
I nearly died!
Yes. That’s one of the greatest albums of all time. It’s astonishing. New one coming out this year to. Ones and Sixes is also an absolute work of art.
Keep up the awesome documentary work. You all have taught me so many things on the technical side of things. Any content, and ESPECIALLY knowledge based content, is very much appreciated. Keep up the great work!
This was one of the best shows ever. I laughed so many times. Joshua was on point today. Well done.
WHOA! Lollygager is from my home town of Traverse City, MI!!!!! I am so getting one.
Favorite episode I’ve seen so far.
We are not in any position to judge people and nor should the people that do judge and lable and smear, cancel and cast out arrest, ruin financially, wreck families, ect…
With that said. Love and light to all…
Thank you guys, amazing as always.
@@Sailor_Man_Music History is offensive? What does that even mean?
@@waltergrace565 He means white history. Revisionists want the success of white history erased to placate non-whites, but there is no point at which they will be satisfied, not until whites are extinct.
@@ymishaus2266 Ah, I wouldn't go that far. Most of those people are just useful idiots that don't really know what they're doing.
20 kinds of Rats? I bet we are getting a Bonsai but with Rats instead of Tube Screamers. Plz let this be true.
And it will probably still be cheaper than Wampler's Ratsbane
Could call it the Rat King
The Rats’ Nest, with the icon being a head with tangled hair.
Is the bloody arm from Shull? Is that why he has his “fake arm” in a sling? Having a mechanical arm may improve his slide tone.
Nothing can help it
This post needs a LOL button.
🦾
I dig hearing cool gear I’ve never heard before and learning about things I didn’t know. Keep it all going! Cheers!
Thanks for addressing the comments on the Hiway 61 video.
I’ve always wanted a Lollygagger Canaglia. I love the look but haven’t heard a demo I liked. Decided to pull the trigger on one today.
@@jonathanbailey994 Ah, fair enough. Enjoy the journey.
Love what yall are doing!
Also, please make documentaries. That would be REAL neat!
You mean like the Pedal the Musical, that explained the timeline and origins of all the relevant stompers in the history of the universe?
@@richardclark. YES. I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....... ....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had not seen the Hwy 61, so I just watched it. Very informative, more please. Best part of this video was Josh "playing the pedals." I count on those innovative jams!
Yay! I like some technical difficulty live. Its ok to not be a robot. Always fun. Love the show.
I LOVE that Low record. Not for everyone but worth a listen. It has become my favourite Low album.
Thanks for the show!
I really like it.
Allways fun to watch something that awakes your curiosity………
Nice works!
I love being part of the Wednesday crowd. 💕
Watching over dinner as us West Coast folks have to watch after work - Lightning Crashes (Live, from Throwing Copper Album)
The Jam @ 47 min had a really nice 'Stone Roses' vibe
Wow, that got deep later in the episode. I haven't see the 'hot topic' item but seems like it was a real lightning rod!
Good job on the Highway 61 show. Kudos.
Oddly... I was born "on this day in history".
Good day to buy a new pedal.
Happy Birthday!
Same here happy birthday!
Some folks on RUclips have an agenda and they are looking to add there views to any given story, they look for key words that trigger their rant, shame but true , keep up the good show!👍
As a fellow Alabama brother in Etowah country let me tell you you're crushing it brother.
That OBNE pedal is awesome!
I’m sure someone said this but Those drum faces are precious
As someone who is a plug straight into the amp guy, I like this for sure! I'm here to learn and challenge myself to expand my music knowledge outside of my personal bubble. The rainbow machine trend is a cool thing to know about even though I'm never gonna incorporate it into my pop punk playing just as one of thousands of examples. The more education you can cram in, imo, the better
Personally I don't prefer live videos, but I enjoyed this all thru and would settle for a live show.
Um, okay, cool. Glad you settled for the free informative video 🤨
Yep... this here episode was pure gold.
love you, love your mates, love your jams
Thank you for playing “Lightning Crashes” from Live. (I listened to Throwing Copper back-to-back for many hours on many occasions in highschool.)
Great show. Keep it up.
A $399 unit & the first thing tried is the $5 momentary (killswitch) button. Love it!
Hot Topic. I loved this documentary, totally got it and would love to see more.
