Passed my my driving test 40 years ago and up until this year I had never had a accident. I was cut up and rammed at a roundabout from a highway maintenance vehicle that didn’t stop. This totally crushed my confidence and made me feel like giving up driving all together.Watching your videos has been like going on a refresher course . Thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos. You’re really brilliant!!!. If someone has their test soon, don’t be panic, try to watch all of these videos you can easily pass the test. Still your a bag of nerves when your trying to stay focussed, with a total stranger analysing your every move and gesture
After I failed test in London in November, I had no patience to wait long in a queue and last week booked test in Colchester, totally unknown area for me. In past one week I googled Colchester test routes and watched your videos, today I passed with no minors. I want to thank you so much Richard, you helped me to pass this exam😊

Just passed my test, your videos are great for reinforcing things covered in my lessons. I'll be recommending your channel to my driving instructor and friends that go through the test.
passed my test last week with only one minor, thank you so much for making all of this info so accessible - sometimes it's easier to take things in when you're not actually concentrating on purely the driving whilst you're learning. Honestly couldn't have passed without these videos. Thanks so much!
I did my test in 1978 I was really nervous. 5 minutes into my test I had to pull out of a difficult junction (in a 30 limit zone) that had limited visibility, I inched out into the road and as I pulled out a car came from the left at about 50mph I had not alternative but to floor it and smoke the tyres to get out of the way of the car from the left. From this moment I thought I had failed the test and carried on. At the end of the test the examiner asked me how I thought I had done. I told him I know I have failed because of what happened at the junction. He replied No you have passed if you had touched your brakes I would have been in hospital at best, and you would have failed I recommend you take your advanced test.
I worry that you are just validating the crazy "accelerate out of trouble" brigade. You need to clarify that you were turning right - I've seen too many drivers accelarate TOWARDS oncoming cars to get into a closing gap when overtaking.
@@SmileyEmoji42the car appeared from the left and was obviously speeding, the learner had obviously already pulled out. Unless the learner suddenly decided to drive on the right, obviously it was a right turn. Well done for the 'accelerate out of trouble' brigade. Lucky to get such a reasonable examiner. I failed my first test (1982) in a similar situation, but barely across the white line when car suddenly appeared. Examiner and me hit brakes at same time.
This video could not come at a better time, i have my driving lesson tomorrow and one of my biggest struggles is speed. Thank you for your content, keep up the good work 👍🏻
Just fyi, I got a minor for 'Progress - Appropriate Speed' and I was not going slow. In fact, as soon as I finished, the examiner quipped that I was Lewis Hamilton because I was going so fast during the test (but stayed within the legal limit) which he does not see often (I am an experienced driver). What I'm saying is that the testing criteria are for the most part standardised, but there is a somewhat large amount of discretion the examiners have. Also as you explained the definitions are not the same for everyone. I would say up to 15% of the mark is discretionary which can fail you even if you know how to drive. PS: you might ask why am I still watching these videos after I passed? well, YT recommends them and I like the content.
Your videos were really amazing! Thanks for your clear instructions and useful tips, I passed my driving test on the first try with only 5 minors in Hendon. Your expertise boosted my confidence, and I will recommend your videos to everyone preparing for their test, thank you 🎉
One story I had on my first test (I'm in Clacton very close to Colchester) I was almost failed for not getting up to speed fast enough on a national speed limit road (I actually failed for clipping the outer curb on a roundabout on the same road), on that road I think I was doing 40 which of course is not right and luckily within that failure I was able to correct this issue but in combination of clipping a curb out of nerves and the speed looking back I was not ready for that test, it's important for anyone waiting to take their test Todo it when your ready and more importantly when your instructor is ready, Thank you Richard for this video even for a driver who past their test month's ago now these still help to improve my own driving
There are people who should have failed their test, then maybe they would drive faster now. Many people regularly drive 40 mph on a single carriageway and 50 mph on a dual carriageway and sometimes you can't overtake.
Love your socks!! Your videos helped me pass my test 7 months ago! I was struggling with bay parking and I was watching your videos and it helped me understand bay parking more! 😊😊

On my pre test 10 years ago I had to drive the test route with my instructor, which took me down a road exactly like the road you went down. He told me that the examiners like to see their pupils use all of the gears at at certain part, honestly I crapped myself at the thought of it but now it's no problem. Tbh I am more confident that I'm doing stuff that I wouldn't do as a learner. Your videos are great btw, even people that have passed their test need help sometimes.
7:11 My instructor says I drive too slow if the road is clear but do well in slow areas and meeting traffic instances. I will try to speed up as I do 25 ish at 30 roads and I understand that’s too slow if on clear roads. I have my test next Tuesday at 2:32 pm. Can you give me any tips please? I would really appreciate it
I got a minor on my test for doing 30 in a 40. We emerged from a side road and I must have missed the sign. Examiner let me drive for a bit and then asked if I was aware it was a 40. I said thank you and brought my speed up. I definitely think there's something to be said for it's better to be too slow than too fast. I'd have much rather got that minor for 30 in a 40, than a major/serious for 40 in a 30!

Hi Richard, your videos are massively helpful. Ive got my test in a couple weeks, and I’ve got a bit of heavy foot in 20 zones (working on it) but this video is really helpful. Especially the lampost rule. Thank you 😊
Hi all. Videos were really really helpful. Had my test yesterday in Grantham and passed. God a very friendly Examiner who was really really down to earth. Used my own car and at first I was really nervous but she calmed me down by starting up a conversation. Had pull up on the left, Emergency stop and parking in a bay. Was all fun. Passed with only three faults. Tnks 💪💪💪
Everywhere local to me is 20 MPH, so I always set the speed limiter on my Toyota. However, I always wonder how accurate the speed limiter is. I have returned to driving after a 25 year break, so I'm really a new driver. Your videpos are amazingly helpful!
To make complete beginners worry about constantly staying within 2mph of the speed limit is counterproductive and dangerous. There are so many things to worry about when driving, but the difference from the posted speed is never one of them. Your goal for speed is to stay safe by smoothly following the actual flow of traffic whenever possible. If you are in a queue of trucks and suddenly see the posted speed change from 50 to 35, is it your priority to slow down as soon as possible, or to match the speed and not cause an accident? Inappropriate speed is only a symptom, anyway. Stepping on the gas pedal of a slow driver is hardly going to make them better... The decision reduce the assessment someones ability requires to a checklist (and, even worse, to PUBLISH it), only demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how to test.
I would change “stop within the distance you can see to be clear” to “stop within half the distance you can see to be clear” reason being someone coming towards you would need the other half of the distance
I drove for many yrs in England before migrating to Canada (Ontario, to be specific). I've driven to New York a couple of times too. It's great to be reminded of driving standards in the UK, which are just incomparably higher than in North America. In Ontario (and I'm sure in other provinces too), you basically do as you wish, especially if you happen to be in front. I'm nor sure what they do for their tests, but it can't be very much because most of the familiar precautions in the UK (e.g., MSM, looking over your shoulder, not forcing others to take evasive action) are literally unknown here. You have to keep your eyes peeled (much more than in the UK) because someone is going to cut in without (and sometimes before) signalling. Oh, and you can drive or overtake in any lane, BTW. Moreover, people don't appreciate the basic courtesies that British drivers take for granted, such as not blocking people's entrances or "letting others in." They just don't seem to take road safety seriously here at all, and sometimes I can't help concluding that all you need to pass your test here are: aggression, impatience and recklessness. Which may explain why insurance for a modest car can be as high as CAD9000 per year for a new driver.
I still remember my first day behind the wheel, back in California aged 15 (almost 60 years ago) and after about 10 minutes in the school car park having to turn left into a relatively major road with a speed limit of 40mph [just checked on Google maps to confirm]. As soon as I'd completed the turn, my instructor told me I must get up to speed and not impede other vehicles by driving too slowly 🙂 I also remember my first day driving after returning to the UK in 1973; I bought a [cheap!] Ford Anglia and had to drive it back to my grandmother's house from Colchester to Copford - I knew the route as I'd ridden along it multiple times...but I hadn't noticed part of it went through a 'bus only' junction LOL - oops! - I was lucky and wasn't stopped and got back safely. I did pass my California driving test, my UK driving test, and my UK motorcycle test, all on the first attempt.
I did my test in 2002 in a Mini Cooper sport X reg, 2001. Near the start on a 30mph dual carriage way (street lamps at whatever distance), he peered over at the speedo, commented on how it always seems faster in a mini. Then just chatted about life with me. This mini did 60 in 2nd gear. A girl I used to know shifted gear from 3to 5th while accelerating. I’ve crashed too many cars to remember! Not into other people. Much
I like the content and consistency. I am doing driving and have been watching your videos Richard. Keep it very up . Ps... it helped my driving significantly.
I’ve got my driving test on the 26th of September and my driver instructor keeps saying I need to check my speed as sometimes it’s quite confusing knowing which road is 20 mph and which road is 30 mph so this is why I’m on here!!
I know examiners go by the speedo in Norway too, but I think they should consider the actual speed. Especially if the car is at the higher end of over-read. Then you are going significantly slower, and might cause annoyance provoking dangerous situations. I used to have a neighbor, insisting to drive indicated speed never faster than the speed limit, usually 5-10 km/h below or even slower. He refused to listen when people told him "but your car indikate almost 10% faster than your actual speed". That's what you get when there's rarely tickets for slow speed.
When you go round a roundabout you should be at a speed that feels comfortable, you should not be leaning the passengers significantly over to one side, or making it hard for other people to judge when to pull in by driving too fast. Try to keep with the flow of traffic.
Today I failed for driving too slow on narrow doubled-parked streets with speed bumps. I was doing 15 on a 20mph. Really unfair and it seems there’s a grey area in what’s safe.
When I took my test last week nearly all the national speed limit roads had roadworks so only had a few short areas to build my speed. I only got to 45mph but then had to slow for roadworks. Examiner said the awful roadworks were impacting on the tests.
speed limit 30, dont drive at 25 constantly even sometimes I hit 30 but didnt want to pass 30 thats why i stayed at 25 and i failed. so minor thing but if you doing 3 times you will fail. i had 8 years driving experience, 1 year uk experience but here we are. even i ve put more and extra cautious and i ve being punished.
I'm sorry to hear that. The examiners in the UK do fail pupils if they don't make the most of the speed limit when safe throughout the test. If it's safe to do 30mph then you should.
I have a speed question for a van which I've not seen addressed anywhere. I know the van limits are lower for many classes of road. I was told that the limit for built-up areas was 30 (like cars). I don't know how that interacts with signed speed limits, though, if it's different to the case with cars. If I'm in a built up area and there's a 40 or 50 posted, can I go at that speed, like in a car? I thought that would be common sense, but I notice that for HGVs (which I'm not driving!) there's a limit of 40 for single lane roads outside built-up areas. Some of those are signed 50 and I suppose the HGV still have to go only 40 in them? This weird HGV limit has now confused me as to how I should be interpreting the rest of the chart for other vehicle types. So (other than cars, which I understand) in what circumstances/vehicles do you travel at: a. the limit given for the vehicle type EXCEPT where the sign gives an explicit speed vs; b. the LOWER of the vehicle limit and the signed speed?
Normally my speed is very well controlled but on my test yesterday I failed because I went too slowly in the town to reduce likelihood of errors then gunned it down a country road to make up for it. I still don't know why I did that, and it was completely out of character for me
Well, if you take your test in a BMW, Audi or white van remember the rules of the road don't apply to you, you are exempt so just drive like a lunatic.
The examiner wants to see that the candidate has control over the car, at all times, and also is aware of their surroundings, and other drivers. Drive too slowly, in a national speed limit area, and your likely to get penalised for inappropriate driving, Your supposed to keep up with traffic, not slow the traffic. Break the speed limit, by driving too quickly, and the candidate will not only fail their test, but also receive penalty points. Its straightforward, drive within the speed limit, but never above it
Can you use speed limiter in a driving test too? (My car has cruise but not limiter and cruise will only set if you apply it at 20+ making it useless for 20 zones)

My test in 7 days and I can’t wait to pass🙏
Good luck with your test!
@@ConquerDriving Thank you x
I always used to advise "drive to what you can see" on national speed limit country lanes. All down to "Information ".phase of "system driving ".
Absolutely, always be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
My brain is fried I just wanna pass my test
Everywhere local to me is 20 MPH, so I always set the speed limiter on my Toyota. However, I always wonder how accurate the speed limiter is. I have returned to driving after a 25 year break, so I'm really a new driver. Your videpos are amazingly helpful!
That bit about speedos and gps speedo has been bugging me for years! Finally, I have an answer!
Always a good video from you.
i always find driving in a 20 residential I end up going over easily. Not by much but I'm always amazed by how easy it is
To make complete beginners worry about constantly staying within 2mph of the speed limit is counterproductive and dangerous.
That's a very valid point. I try to do that anyway, but probably should explain that.
Your verygoodinstructor in colchester,I got all my answers in this video.thank u so much.
Moreover, people don't appreciate the basic courtesies that British drivers take for granted, such as not blocking people's entrances or "letting others in."
They just don't seem to take road safety seriously here at all, and sometimes I can't help concluding that all you need to pass your test here are: aggression, impatience and recklessness. Which may explain why insurance for a modest car can be as high as CAD9000 per year for a new driver.
I watched some driving tests in the US and it's basically like 10-15 mins.
Thanks for your video, helped me to pass my test yesterday 👍🥳
That's great news, thank you for watching and congratulations on passing!
"Give them enough room to fall off their bicycle" 😂 I know it wasn't meant to sound passive aggressive but it still made me lol
😂 It's the amount of space I tell my pupils to leave when overtaking a cyclist.
I still remember my first day behind the wheel, back in California aged 15 (almost 60 years ago) and after about 10 minutes in the school car park having to turn left into a relatively major road with a speed limit of 40mph [just checked on Google maps to confirm]. As soon as I'd completed the turn, my instructor told me I must get up to speed and not impede other vehicles by driving too slowly 🙂
I also remember my first day driving after returning to the UK in 1973; I bought a [cheap!] Ford Anglia and had to drive it back to my grandmother's house from Colchester to Copford - I knew the route as I'd ridden along it multiple times...but I hadn't noticed part of it went through a 'bus only' junction LOL - oops!
I just passed one hour ago with two minors! Thanks to your videos!!!
That's fantastic news! Congratulations on passing!
@@ConquerDriving thank you from all my heart! Will keep watching your videos as they are extremely useful for me!!!!

😂 I put it back before she noticed.
His demonstration shorts are Hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve got my driving test on the 26th of September and my driver instructor keeps saying I need to check my speed as sometimes it’s quite confusing knowing which road is 20 mph and which road is 30 mph so this is why I’m on here!!
You're the best teacher
Very comprehensive as usual.
Hi, this great lesson. Can you do how fast to drive on roundabouts as well, Please ?
When you go round a roundabout you should be at a speed that feels comfortable, you should not be leaning the passengers significantly over to one side, or making it hard for other people to judge when to pull in by driving too fast. Try to keep with the flow of traffic.
Today I failed for driving too slow on narrow doubled-parked streets with speed bumps. I was doing 15 on a 20mph. Really unfair and it seems there’s a grey area in what’s safe.
That 0-30 skit was hilarious, got me laughing out loud
When I took my test last week nearly all the national speed limit roads had roadworks so only had a few short areas to build my speed. I only got to 45mph but then had to slow for roadworks. Examiner said the awful roadworks were impacting on the tests.
This is SO useful !!!
This is just great content at this point not even here for tactical information 😂
12:50 purpose for the mirror on the left? (Non vehicle)
speed limit 30, dont drive at 25 constantly even sometimes I hit 30 but didnt want to pass 30 thats why i stayed at 25 and i failed. so minor thing but if you doing 3 times you will fail. i had 8 years driving experience, 1 year uk experience but here we are. even i ve put more and extra cautious and i ve being punished.
I'm sorry to hear that. The examiners in the UK do fail pupils if they don't make the most of the speed limit when safe throughout the test. If it's safe to do 30mph then you should.
Here in the US we aren't allowed to use the cruise control on the driving test.

That 0-30 was hilarious 🤣
Normally my speed is very well controlled but on my test yesterday I failed because I went too slowly in the town to reduce likelihood of errors then gunned it down a country road to make up for it. I still don't know why I did that, and it was completely out of character for me
Well, if you take your test in a BMW, Audi or white van remember the rules of the road don't apply to you, you are exempt so just drive like a lunatic.
🤣
The examiner wants to see that the candidate has control over the car, at all times, and also is aware of their surroundings, and other drivers.
Drive too slowly, in a national speed limit area, and your likely to get penalised for inappropriate driving,
Your supposed to keep up with traffic, not slow the traffic.
Break the speed limit, by driving too quickly, and the candidate will not only fail their test, but also receive penalty points.
Its straightforward, drive within the speed limit, but never above it
Excellent very informative thank you 🙏
Thank you so much
Very clear explanation
Superstars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
👍
19:13 got me dying richard🤣🤣🤣🤣😎
Can you use speed limiter in a driving test too?
(My car has cruise but not limiter and cruise will only set if you apply it at 20+ making it useless for 20 zones)
