Saying Goodbye to My Soccer Friends, 1973

In 1973 when my father was serving in the Peace Corps in Nairobi, Kenya, he took me, 11 years old, and my brother, 6, to the local park on Sundays to play soccer. As soon as my brother and I brought our soccer ball to the field, dozens of boys, ages 6-12, seemed to come out of nowhere. They were skin and bones. Most of them had nothing but tattered shorts and no shirts. A few smaller boys couldn’t tie their shoes and I’d spend much of the game tying their laces for them. The children’s energy and soccer skills were spectacular. They ran circles around my brother and me. After 2 hours when my father said it was time for us to go home, the children were so disappointed. They wanted to play forever. I’d wave goodbye at them in the backseat of my dad’s car and they’d wave back. I always think of those children. This song is dedicated to them.
