As a juggler since 1976, I have done my fair share of "testing" various objects in stores, usually larger air-filled balls. I do a lot with ball spinning. One time in a dept. store near Boston, I spun a ball on my right index, then tossed it up while doing a pirouette, expecting to catch the ball back on my right index as usual. Instead, the ball went up, hit a suspended sign which unhooked at one end. The sign swung down guillotine-like, slicing the air and narrowly missing my head. No one was hurt. Now that wrapping paper is in bins at the front of my local supermarket, I am tempted to juggle three of those rolls with half flips. It looks pretty and perpetuates my reputation in town. Like the guy in the clip above, I can't help myself. Besides, 'tis the season, so why not?
What's even more impressive is that most toy pianos have just one and a bit octaves, and won't allow you to press more than two of the minuscule plastic keys at once...
Going from the meow meow piano at 1:34 straight into the 'theme' from Pixar's UP (1:42) surprised me the most. It's a wonderful piece of music that always gets me in the feels… even when played on two toy pianos in Target!
When I was a student, my neighbour in the flat where I lived was a penniless but brilliant music student who could not afford a proper instrument, so used a toy keyboard instead! The music was so utterly beautiful that people hearing it would stand completely enchanted in a trance outside the door to listen.
I was about 5 years old on a ferry trip with a 20 cent plastic sqeezebox toy. The entertainer was onstage playing this ritzy inlaid piano accordian. He called me up and asked to have a play? Sure He played 3 songs on that thing and the whole boat was singing along to it. My toy!!! He said a true musician can make music out of anything. Man I was so proud. My toy made so many people happy.
Back in the mid 80's, I remember my dad doing something similar in Wal-Mart. He used to let the demo play on one of those Casio keyboards and act like he was actually the one playing the music. Kids would walk by and look at him like he was this fantastic musician, standing close by and watching as he pretended to play while dancing. At the time, I was a bit embarassed by it, but now, it's just a fond memory I can laugh about. He's been gone for 25 years, but I still miss him every day.
I tried playing some classical organ and hymn tunes on toy keyboards at a store in Malaysia 10 years ago while my wife was viewing items in an adjacent department. No one took any notice, except for the security guard who briefly listened and then proceeded to lurk just within earshot until I had finished.
I love that, great choice of tune!! One of my favourite artists used a cat piano as part of a live concert - it was very funny. First time I found out they existed! 😂

That's not very old, at all. There is no way of owning oneself because of age. Age isn't relevant. It's hilarious when people under 40 talk like they're 60.
@YodatheHobbit That's not *quite* what I was saying. I was saying that despite us not being that old, these songs *feel* old because the people that would've heard these songs as kids now are at the age where they likely can have kids themselves. Perception of time is funky, but really neat
All of it was a laugh, but also would show kids that they could get skilled, even playing on so called "Toys". There was a "Pop group", in the 1980s called (Pianosaurus), that only played on toy instruments, they came from New York City, give them a listen.
You're very talented. When I was a teenager, I pulled several strings on talking dolls and almost got thrown out. Didn't have the same effect as your playing.
I like playing music as a hobby, but I've always felt too embarrassed to play the toy pianos at the stores. Some of them actually sound really nice though. It's really fun and entertaining to hear what songs musicians play on the toy keyboards whenever we go to the stores. I've also often had people ask me to tune the ukuleles so they could play them, and it's honestly really hard because if I tune up one string, the other goes out of tune! Haha. But once I get everything sorted out, I enjoy listening to everyone having a jam session with toy instruments. I wish I could hear more music like this around the stores more often. Also, a very random thought but while the traditional cat piano is funny, I'd love to hear what a "Mew" keyboard would sound like, featuring the cries of the Pokémon Mew. Notes in the 1st-3rd octaves could be Mewtwo, and any higher is Mew. Pokémon could open up some insane possibilities for toy keyboard sounds.
