  • Wearing my Seiko SLA055, explain why boomers shouldn't stand on their front lawn and judge the younger generations in the context of The Fremen Mirage, the idea that toughness and softness are recurring cycles.

    My wife’s TX grandfather was a tank captain for Patton in WWII, battle of the bulge etc., however his entire tank batallion was actually a trained cavalry regiment, that were given just mere months to completely change to a tank battalion when it was clear we would become involved in the European trouble, from fighting horsemen to tank fighters. Amazing what our military is capable of when called upon to shed any weakness. He ended up having an army photographer in his tank for the duration, and the photos are amazing.

    The quote about "hard times create strong men" I believe it originates from the book 'The Fourth Turning', a book about generational theory.

    I thought I was a tough guy rugged and full of grit well I did not understand really that I was soft. I started buying watches and after a while I started doing endurance cycling so now not only am I weaker and get passed by older folks on their bikes I am also thinking about watches while all of that is happening. All hail the GOAT.

    Your buddy is correct. When I went to boot camp in 1998 we we were constantly told that everything was easier for us than when they went through in the “old corps”. We were part of some new corps corrupted by the “mothers of America” writing letters to congress to weaken our training. 😅I imagine this is still being said today.
    By the time the crucible occurs the recruits are already almost done with boot camp and conditioned to be successful at the event. Likely this is why the guy felt it was easier than what he had built up on his mind.

    Being on our own as kids for hours is what tought us responsibility of our acts and consequences: we had to explain, once back home, our bruises, the effects of our misdimeanors, or our torn clothes. We had to be responsible. Today, children are to be supervised by an adult at every moment of the day, regardless of the activity or the age. So, someone else carries the burden of responsibility for what's going on. Big effect on newer generations, I think.

    -While listening to a bunch of podcasts on the future of AI and humans I came to the realization that we won’t be able to rely on physical work (jobs) to keep us in shape. However we will likely have lots of free time to exercise and focus on fitness if one chooses to. And I think they will since physical decay will be ever present.

      I would’ve thought the physical jobs, the really physical ones, would be the last to go, if at all.

      @@JeffreyMcMahon “Get off my lawn!” That’s all. We call yards “gardens” in Ireland.
      This is a catchphrase from a regular skit done by a character on national radio back in the late 80s/early 90s. Just a bit of craic.

    You need soft and hard and everything in between in society. I remember hearing people in my age group (Millennial) talking crap about gen z same way gen x and boomers talked about millennials. People are tribal man.

    Is it that facing mortality thing? Recognising that the people now in charge, the youngsters, do things differently?
    People have forgotten how to be hungry. In this world of 24 hour entertainment and fast food. Why be bored or hungry?
    Throughout history people have looked forward to meal times because they were hungry - metaphorically bl00dy starving. Unless you're self controlled enough to be ravenous before dinner, no weight will be lost. Easy to write

    Very good observation and very true. But, the young man STILL had to be very strong AND very smart to be a modern Marine. You just can't be a slack jawed dullard off the street to be a Marine ( or any branch of the military.) Unfortunate end of this is Social Media dividing generations even more by using terms like boomer, gen Xer, etc, in derogatory manner. Flinging terms around like a monkey flinging poo. What we do know of things we can always depnd on are death, taxes, and change. But yet they remain the same, no matter the change.

    • @hibernopithecus7500
      @hibernopithecus7500 23 дня назад +1

      Agreed, but they rarely use “Gen-Xer”. If you’re older than Millennials, you’re a Boomer. I even heard a Zoomer refer to Eminem (all of 51) as a “grandpa geezer” a few weeks ago.
